Directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Finding Vivian Maier documents Maloof’s journey to discover more about Vivian Maier after purchasing a box of her negatives in 2007. He began the search a few years later, after he realized the negatives consisted of some of the best undeveloped street photography of the 20th century. After some searching, it was revealed that Maier was a career-nanny who had died in 2009.
Since the documentary is in serious contention for a best documentary feature Oscar, we thought we’d check to see how many other photography-related films have managed to resonate with the Academy’s documentary branch and land a nomination in the same category. We found six.
The Naked Eye (1956)
Directed by two-time Oscar winner Louis Clyde Stoumen, this documentary celebrates photography through history by looking at pioneers in the field, such as Margaret Bourke-White. Though he covers works by multiple photographers,...

The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival to an enthusiastic audience and critical acclaim and was instantly acquired by Tribeca Films for the U.S. rights. Tribeca Film has acquired U.S. rights to the Matthew Cooke-directed documentary “How to Make Money Selling Drugs,” which had its world premiere Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The New York-based distributor plans a day-and-date theatrical and VOD release in 2013. “Drugs” uses pop culture as a lens through which to investigate the lives of people on both sides of the “war on drugs.” 50 Cent, producer David Simon, Arianna Huffington, Woody Harrelson, Eminem, Rick Ross and Susan Sarandon are among those interviewed for the film, along with Drug Enforcement personnel and the U.S. Drug Czar. Bert Marcus of Bert Marcus Productions and Adrian Grenier, who created the 2010 doc “Teenage Paparazzo,” produced “Drugs.” “This is a work that resonates with truth, anger and insight by an extremely talented filmmaker,” said Tribeca Enterprises chief creative officer Geoff Gilmore. “From politics...

After working on both the Oscar-nominated Deliver Us From Evil and Adrian Grenier‘s Teenage Paparazzo, Matthew Cooke is set to premiere his directorial documentary debut, How to Make Money Selling Drugs this fall. At first glance, it seems like another take on topics Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner explored in their excellent book Freakonimics. But this one has an added dose of celebrity.
Rappers Eminem, 50 Cent and Rick Ross discuss their upbringing that dealt with the drug trade, while The Wire creator David Simon talks about the economics of the industry. There’s also DEA agents talking about the other side of the dangerous business. And for some reason Woody Harrelson and Susan Sarandon also show up in the feature. Cut together like an informercial regarding the title, we’ve got the promising first trailer, which gives us an inside look at this $400 billion industry. Check it out below,...

Building a name for himself as a cinematographer (All Tomorrow's Parties, Teenage Paparazzo) and documentary filmmaker in the New York City film scene, Jason Banker dropped his first feature, Toad Road, into the J.A.de Sève Cinema at Fantasia. A fictional story using hybrid documentary elements to tell a creep-filled horror tale centered around a Pennsylvania urban legend about a forest path leading to an abandoned mental asylum (long since burned into the ground) that causes strange hallucinations and intense sensory experiences, not unlike a Timothy Leary psychedelic trip. Banker was enthused with the reception to his very tiny and unconventional horror film, but was an endearing mix of excitement and nervousness during our conversation; as if the raw experience and highly personal relationships involved in making the film were...

You know, the one-sheet for director Jason Banker’s upcoming horror/thriller thingy “Toad Road” was actually engaging enough to catch my attention. It’s nothing overwhelmingly original or mind-shatteringly amazing, mind you, but it does its job effectively. However, the more I read about the flick itself, the less excited I am about the project. Name checking both Gus Van Sant and Larry Clark in a press release should be enough to warrant an investigation by the Pretentious Police, but, honestly, I kind of dig the trailer for the flick, too. Here’s hoping it’s more Clark than Van Sant. The last thing anyone wants is another “Gerry”. Yeesh. One title starting to build a bit of buzz ahead of its July 26th premiere at Fantasia is Jason Banker's is-it-horror, is-it-drama feature Toad Road. Previously known primarily for his documentary work (Dp on Teenage Paparazzo and Walk Away Renee and director of My Name is Faith, amongst other), this is Banker's dramatic directorial debut. A few words on the film from Simon Laperrière and the Fantasia site: The impressive second full-length feature by the talented Jason Banker, the unclassifiable Toad Road is at a crossroads of sorts. On the one hand, it's an intimate meditation on lost youth that evokes the films of Gus Van Sant. Depicted with disconcerting realism, Banker's narrative paints a nuanced portrait of a nihilistic generation, and with the...

Vincent Chase is used to looking to the left and seeing his brother Drama staring at himself in the shop windows, looking to the left and seeing his manager-friend Eric on the phone, making a deal, and jumping in the car with Turtle ready at the wheel.
Adrian Grenier has played Vince for eight happy seasons of Entourage
But no longer. The final episode of Entourage has wrapped, so after eight glorious seasons, the actors - Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara - not to mention their irrepressible agent Ari Gold (aka Jeremy Piven) - must prepare to go their separate ways. Will they cope any better than their on-screen counterparts?
Below Grenier, who plays the heart-throb at the centre of the action, reflects on the final season and how Vince, and he, must finally learn to go it alone...
So are you completely wrapped on the whole thing?...

I first fell in love with Adrian Grenier in 1999 when he played Chase Hammond, Melissa Joan Hart’s love interest in Drive Me Crazy. How can a lady resist that perfectly coiffed hair, chiseled features and piercing eyes? In 2004, he won America over with his role as the handsome movie star Vincent Chase on HBO’s Entourage. The show’s success has allowed Grenier to work as he sees fit, selectively choosing roles and dedicating his time to projects of passion. Teenage Paparazzo is Grenier’s exploration of the way in which celebrity infiltrates all aspects and all ages of society.
While Grenier may be the filmmaker here, he is also the celebrity who acts as the catalyst for the story. When 13-year-old aspiring photographer Austin Visschedyk takes his first paparazzi picture of Adrian Grenier, a spark is ignited, launching him into the world of celebrity tabloid photos and glamour.

Overall, a pretty solid week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray led by Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which finally hits stores amidst a minor controversy [1]. Other major titles include Disney's CG-animated film Tangled, All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, and Doug Liman's political thriller Fair Game starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. There's also a handful of decent non-fiction releases include IMAX: Hubble, Ondi Timoner's Cool It, and Adrian Grenier's fascinating yet flawed Teenage Paparazzo, plus in the TV department we have Season 4 of Mad Men and the first season of HBO's Treme from The Wire creator David Simon. If that's not enough, catch up on some classics in high-def like The Ten Commandments, Teen Wolf and the Scream trilogy. Check out the full list of new releases after the jump. [A big thanks, as always, to Joshua Chaplinsky for the following review.]Teenage Paparazzo releases on DVD in the U.S. Tuesday, March 29th.If the perceived douchiness of Adrian Grenier is preventing you from seeing this film, let me assuage your fears- Teenage Paparazzo is very, very good. Sure, it's familiar territory for the star, but this isn't some superficial vanity project or an episode of Entourage come to life. It is an in-depth look at the symbiotic relationship between celebrities and the public, as well as an assured directorial debut. It all begins with Grenier being flash-blasted by 14 year-old Austin Visschedyk in a conveniently documented night on the town. Considering recent "documentaries" like Exit Through The Giftshop and Catfish, it's hard not to be skeptical...

Asked what they'd like be when they grow up, and given -- among other choices -- CEO of a company, United States Senator, or one of many other prestigious positions in the employment world, 42 percent of all junior high students polled responded that they'd rather be a celebrity's assistant. Not a celebrity: A celebrity's assistant.
That's messed up, people, but it's also the state of our culture today. Nothing, it seems, is more prized than fame, yet many of those who have it absolutely loathe the downside, which is having rabid, ill-mannered, don't-give-a-shit paparazzi trailing their every move.
That's what "Entourage's" Adrian Grenier explores in his documentary Teenage Paparazzo. There are a lot of surprising revelations in the doc, but perhaps none as surprising as this:...

Entourage star Adrian Grenier has admitted that he shocked actress Brooke Shields by working with a paparazzi crew that was pursuing her. While shadowing a group of photographers for his new documentary Teenage Paparazzo, Grenier said that he somehow found himself snapping pictures of Shields, who is married to Entourage's executive producer Chris Henchy. "She had no idea I would be there... I had no idea I would be there," he told PopEater. He continued: "When you are getting accosted like that, it's hard to see very much. It's like a dream at times even in normal circumstances. To see me amongst them must have (more)...

Adrian Grenier, the person, has a bit more depth than Vince, the character, he plays on 'Entourage.'
Take Grenier's new project, 'Teenage Paparazzo,' which debuts at Mon., Sept, 27 at 9Pm Et on HBO. The documentary chronicles the life of a 14-year old paparazzo named Austin who stalks celebs in the middle of the night in Los Angeles.
But Grenier -- who wrote, directed and stars in 'Teenage Paparazzo' -- broadens the scope of his doc to make it a multi-layered look at celebrity in our fame-obsessed world. He becomes a paparazzo himself and and interviews high-wattage stars Alec Baldwin, Paris Hilton, Matt Damon, Lindsay Lohan about their experiences, plus talks to big-idea thinkers like Noam Chomsky and Jake Halpern about fans' "relationships" with celebs. It's that pseudo relationship that's fueling today's paparazzi frenzy, according to Grenier's documentary.

I recently got involved in the making of a documentary about celebrity culture called Teenage Paparazzo. It was directed by Adrian Grenier, the star of Entourage on HBO. Adrian is also featured in the movie, which shows in a very personal way what it has been like for him, becoming famous playing someone famous. Teenage Paparazzo was a special entry at Sundance last winter and will be shown on HBO tomorrow, Monday, September 27, 9pm Eastern Time. The story revolves around Adrian's relationship with Austin Visschedyk, the teenage paparazzo he met on a rope line. The movie tracks the boy's involvement in that world and goes on to explore the nature of our society's fascination with celebrity. It includes interviews with other celebrities (Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Whoopi Goldberg) and some...

After years of being captured by cameras, Entourage star Adrian Grenier turns his lenses back on the photographers in the documentary Teenage Paparazzo.
The film follows 14-year-old paparazzo Austin Visschedyk, who Grenier uses as his ticket into a circle that's closed off to outsiders. "He was a perfect way to infiltrate the paparazzi because he wasn't jaded and was open to the change," Grenier tells TVGuide.com. But he also makes it clear the documentary isn't about exploiting the paparazzi to paint them in a negative light. "I was really looking to find a constructive understanding of who they are," he says.
The 34-year-old talks about why his friends weren't originally on board for the project, how the experience changed his perception of his own fame, and what he hopes people will take away from the film. Plus: What does he think about an Entourage movie?

The loathed-and-beloved pilot fish of celebrity culture, paparazzi are front of brain lately: Entourage star Adrian Grenier's doc Teenage Paparazzi is coming to cable, and the film about Ron "Brando Broke My Jaw" Galella, Smash His Camera, hits DVD next month. Which is to say it's annoying, thoughtless, transparently full of crap and morally confused.

Adrian Grenier became a celebrity by playing one on 'Entourage,' and in a new documentary he gets on the other side of the camera to explore just how the paparazzi exploit celebrities, and vice-versa. Adrian's window into La's tabloid culture is a child paparazzo named Austin Visschedyk, just 13 years old and fetching up to $2,000 per Kim Kardashian photo when 'Teenage Paparazzo' begins. As Austin gets caught up in filming the movie, his own celebrity grows and the media attention stokes his appetite for fame. Academics, photographers and celebrities including Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan and Rosie O'Donnell weigh in, and Adrian stages a photo-op with his friend Paris Hilton to see how it will be reported in the press. HBO held two premieres on the same night for its two different programs. On Tuesday, September 21 night Nyu Skirball Center was filled with the stars and producers of TV s "Bored to Death" while The Pacific Design Center Silverscreen Theater was crowded with the faces from documentary "Teenage Paparazzo".
At "Bored to Death" premiere, the stars were celebrating the imminent season 2 that begins airing this Sunday, September 26 as well as the release of season 1 DVD on September 21. Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson represented the main cast, accompanied by creator Jonathan Ames and HBO co-president Eric Kessler.
Season 2 is opened with "Escape From the Dungeon" and by episode 2 nudity will happen. "I think I'm the first creator of a TV show to do full-frontal nudity," Ames told NY Times at the premiere. "Fortunately it was very meager, because I'm so small."

"Entourage" star Adrian Grenier dropped by the Ktla News Morning Show on Tuesday (Sept. 22) and Zap2it caught up with him after the interview. Grenier is promoting his latest project, a documentary film called "Teenage Paparazzo" airing Monday, Sept. 27 on HBO.
No stranger to paparazzi, Grenier was shocked to see a young boy holding his own (and his camera) among veterans more than twice his age. So shocked by the sight of it, he decided to produce a documentary pointed at the paparazzi through his and the teenaged photog's eyes.
"It's sort of this glitch in the system where something you just take for granted and you accept on some level," Grenier tells Zap2it. "Then suddenly you see this little kid and it's gone too far it seems... I had to ask more questions and figure out what is really going on."

Entourage star Adrian Grenier has a newfound respect for the paparazzi - after befriending a teenage snapper and filming his life chasing celebrities for a new documentary.
The actor was inspired to make Teenage Paparazzo after encountering 14-year-old Austin Visschedyk during a night out - and he decided to turn the tables on the teen by making his life the subject of his documentary.
Grenier insists getting to know Visschedyk gave him a better understanding of the people behind the cameras.
He tells the Sydney Morning Herald, "What I recognised was that standing out there in the street, looking at the paparazzi, my instinct is to judge them and reject them. But then I saw that I didn't really understand them as human beings and I didn't understand what was driving what they did...
"I believe that gossip is fundamental to the human condition. We need to project ideas, and we use other people to embody those ideas. They help us to shape who we are and what we choose to reject or imitate."
Grenier also recruited A-list pals including Paris Hilton, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon and Lindsay Lohan to appear onscreen to discuss Hollywood snappers - and has no regrets about using his connections for the project.
He adds, "It's a luxury I have, an advantage and by golly it's my right to exploit it."...
