Nearly 20 years after directing his debut feature, Southie, veteran actor John Shea (Agent X, An Invisible Sign) steps behind the camera again. Once more focusing on the insidious influence of Boston's criminal underworld, Shea assembles many of the requisite elements of a contemporary crime drama, but orchestrates them so chaotically that audiences may be put off by the film's unwelcome onslaught of stale genre techniques.
Shea knows well enough to lead off with an action sequence, as Boston police detective James Doyle (Eric Dane) responds to a 911 call reporting a hostage situation. Along with his partner (and girlfriend) Maggie...

There’s nothing quite like a multi-layered, deeply clever film title to get the creative juices going, to pump the blood, to send Hollywood into a tizzy. And then there are other titles. Deadline Henderson reports that David Ellison’s Skydance Productions “has made a preemptive acquisition of [comedy pitch] Bad In Bed.” I’m not entirely sure what a “preemptive acquisition” means, but I think it’s safe to assume it’s another spat of weird wordplay from Finke (were they trying to block someone else from getting at it? Isn’t that big business in a nutshell? Why am I still fixated on this?), so we’ll move on. The script for the film will be penned by Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis, the screenwriting duo who previously wrote The Wedding Planner and An Invisible Sign (better known as “that Jessica Alba math film that no one saw”). The pitch is described as ”a racy high concept...

Remember when the notion of “independent film” meant nothing more than a film funded without the backing of a major studio? That time no longer exists. With each independent film that found massive mainstream popularity, the idea of “independent film” as a genre and not just a financial model began to grow. Now, there is a certain set of qualities that define the quintessential indie film. If it’s a drama, it’s lighthearted until it reaches its hidden, darker core with some metaphor about identity or socioeconomics floating around. For comedies, the characters have to be quirky and possess certain affectations that could only come from the mind of a writer who thinks it would be cool, but knows deep down that it just wouldn’t fly in real life (practically or culturally). An Invisible Sign is what happens when the concept of independent film as a genre evolves...

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...

When I reported the latest MPAA ratings two weeks ago I noted Universal intended to appeal the R-rating it's upcoming thriller Dream House earned with the reason citing "for some violence." It was then reported last week that Universal lost that appeal and the R-rating would remain. Well, it appears director Jim Sheridan went in and did a little snipping as an edited version of the film has now received its sought for PG-13, but the reason is curious: "For violence, terror, some sexuality and brief strong language."
I can't help but wonder how editing a film that simply had "some violence" turns it into a film with a lighter rating but added "terror, some sexuality and brief strong language". Can you explain that to me?
That said, here are the new MPAA ratings from Bulletin No: 2180.
Attack The Block Rated R For creature violence, drug content and pervasive language.

Mpi will release the 2010 independent drama-romance An Invisible Sign starring Jessica Alba (Little Fockers) on Blu-ray and DVD on September 20 for the list prices of $29.98 and $24.98.
Jessica Alba crunches her numbers in An Invisible Sign.
The movie finds Alba portraying Mona Gray, a 20-year-old loner who, as a young girl, gives up everything important to her in life, except mathematics, as part of a “deal with the universe” to help restore her mathematician father (John Shea, TV’s Gossip Girl ) to health. Now a math teacher who does her best to help her students contend with their own personal crises, Mona meets a handsome young science teacher (Chris Messina, Greenberg) and has her first experience with love.

Emma Roberts, Chris Messina and Ari Graynor have joined the cast of Celeste and Jesse Forever. They are set to star alongside Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg in the romantic dramedy, according to Variety. The indie is directed by Lee Toland Krieger (The Vicious Kind) based on a script by Jones and Will McCormack.
The film follows "a young divorcing couple (Jones and Samberg) who try to maintain their long-standing friendship while living together and pursuing other relationships.Roberts will play a starlet who, when her career sags, helps the protagonist come out of her shell by hiring her to revamp her image." Messina stars as a financial analyst who helps Celeste get over Jesse, while Graynor stars as Celeste's best friend from college who's uncomfortable with her unusual arrangement.
I think Roberts was the best part of Scream 4, so I am excited to see her in this film.

"Better living through chemistry" was the slogan of the DuPont Corporation from 1935 to 1982. "Better living through mathematics" could be the tag line for Marilyn Agrelo's film, "An Invisible Sign," an adaptation of the favorably-reviewed novel by Aimee Bender. The novel and movie are both too far on the twee/precious side to be readily accepted by even some art-house audiences; twee and precious meaning dainty, delicate, cute, quaint, affected. The pace is slow, the dialogue is banal, and the performers like figures from the fairy tale that opens the film. The fairy tale, which is told by dad (John Shea) to his small, precocious daughter Mona Gray (Bailee Madison), involves a king whose territory is not large enough to accommodate the population. Each family is ordered to choose one member to be killed, but one family member successfully petitioned: "If we cut one limb from each of us, those...

Marvel is once again trying to repeat the success of Iron Man by releasing Thor in the first week of May (although it has already been playing in other parts of the world). Other wide releases include romantic comedy Something Borrowed starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson, plus another comedy called Jumping the Broom. In limited release we have The Beaver starring Mel Gibson, Roland Joffé's There Be Dragons, and Hobo with a Shotgun finally gets unleashed on U.S. audiences. Summary: A somewhat unintentionally disturbing portrait of a young woman who finds comfort in math and numbers.
An Invisible Sign is kind of disturbing. It's not that it means to be, nor should be. The quirky drama released by IFC films stars Jessica Alba in an attempt for a more dramatic role for the impossibly attractive engenue. It is not that Jessica Alba cannot act- she can. The fault in An Invisible Sign is an overall confusion of tone. Is it a love story? A coming of age story? A family drama? It can never decide which is the utmost reason of why it becomes disturbing.

IFC Films just released a trailer for An Invisible Sign, the drama directed by Marilyn Agrelo, and based on the book by Aimee Bender. The film stars Jessica Alba, J.K. Simmons, Chris Messina, Sophie Nyweide and Bailee Madison. Here is the plot synopsis:
Young Mona idolizes her father, a brilliant mathematician. When he suddenly demonstrates signs of mental illness, Mona begins to obsess about numbers, using them to interpret an unpredictable and threatening world. Now an adult (Jessica Alba), Mona’s old superstitions and compulsive behaviors continue to flourish, but a new job as an elementary school math teacher (a position she both relishes and dreads), may force her out of her protective shell. With imagination and humor, as well as a special sensitivity to the realities of mental illness, An Invisible Sign carries a magic all its own.

It’s scary how hot Jessica Alba’s Vogue Italia photos are, albeit in a high-school-goth-circa-1996 sort of way. This the kind of wardrobe and dye job we’d dream about in the sixth grade, when Marilyn Manson was cool but we were too intimated to go into Hot Topic alone. “My own style is probably a mixture of high and low. I’m definitely into sort of layering and I like mystery so I don’t put it all out there,” the star of the upcoming An Invisible Sign told the magazine. “I play dress up for a living — for photo shoots and for working and movies or whatnot — I sort of wear more revealing things that show my body. But in life I like things that have a little bit more mystery. I like things that are elegant and chic, but then a little rock-and-roll.” If by “rock-and-roll,...

After last appearing on the big screen at the end of 2010 in a not so sparkling role in Little Fockers, Jessica Alba is now back playing the lead in new movie An Invisible Sign, the story of a math teacher obsessed with numbers and a new trailer has just arrived courtesy of The Playlist.
Looking refreshingly geeky with ponytails and no make-up on, Jessica plays Mona, a woman with a weird fixation with numbers developed as a child after her beloved mathematician father started showing signs of mental illness. Now grown up and unemployed, Mona is evicted, but receives a call from her ex elementary school principal who offers her a job as the new math teacher. At work, she proves herself to be quite an unconventional educator, and also falls for a colleague, battles her compulsive obsession and ends up pushing herself out of her comfort zone and into a new world.

Look, I get it. Jessica Alba appears to be shooting for a career reboot. She's trying to wash away the taste of Honey (I'm so sorry about that), buy herself some credibility. To her credit, she's been surprisingly out of the paparazzi limelight of late -- or at lease, out of it in my eyes. Perhaps Courtney would know better than I. The point is, she's trying to become a Very Serious Actress, indicated by roles in films such as The Killer Inside Me and now, An Invisible Sign.
In which she plays a mathematical prodigy. Jessica, honey (crap, I did it again), that might be a little too much, too soon, you know?
Anyway, here's the trailer for An Invisible Sign, one of those adorably quirky love stories about misfits trying to find their place in the world. Here's the full synopsis:

Jessica Alba’s luscious hair and pouty lips have landed her numerous eye-candy roles and magazine covers. Now the oft glamorous actress looks to take on new terrain by donning a frumpy frock and limp pigtails to play an emotionally stunted math whiz in the upcoming drama The Invisible Sign. Based on the book An Invisible Sign of My Own by Aimee Bender, the film marks the narrative debut of Marilyn Agrelo, the documentarian behind Mad Hot Ballroom, and features J.K Simmons and Chris Messina.
Below we have the trailer which features some awkward but adorable ingénue, an aggressive but affable suitor, and a pint-sized paramour getting to second base. Check it out:

Just how similar is the upcoming An Invisible Sign to the 2005 film Proof? Let’s count the ways. Both revolve around a sad, dowdy math genius played by a beautiful, A-List actress (Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow, respectively). Both of those geniuses start to neglect numbers when their fathers get ill, then are taught how to embrace life again by a studly male academic (Chris Messina and Jake Gyllenhaal, respectively). Oh, and both movies also appear to take place in a perpetual autumn. Did I miss anything?

Could a film be trying any harder to be quirky and charming?

Jessica Alba once tried to play a brilliant scientist (“Fantastic Four”) and the results were not exactly, uh, good. Here, her character’s also pretty good at math, but maybe it’s the direction by Marilyn Agrelo or the script, but she looks much more comfortable in the role. In any case, “An Invisible Sign” looks like one of those potential turning points for Alba in terms of movie career. God knows she could use it after burning a ton of bridges recently by badmouthing her past directors. It’s definitely a major step out of her comfort zone, which probably explains why it’s not getting a whole lot of attention and is already on VOD and scheduled to open in select theaters May 6, 2011 from IFC Films. Ok, so even though she was awarded a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress, we'll give Jessica Alba some credit here. While the quality control was off, we can't think of any other actress last year whose resume was as varied as Alba's that had "Valentine's Day," "The Killer Inside Me," "Machete" and "Little Fockers" on it. At least she's mixing it up. But there are some roles she might have to leave untouched. Such as playing a math teacher. Bringing an end to the weekend with a retail excursion, Jessica Alba stepped out with Honor Marie for a Sunday afternoon (September 26) shopping trip to Barneys New York in Beverly Hills.

Back home in the States, Jessica Alba was spotted out and about with husband Cash Warren and daughter Honor Marie in Beverly Hills on Sunday (August 1).
Looking cute in a casual ensemble topped off with a fedora hat, the "Into the Blue" babe happily strolled alongside her family en route to grab up lunch at a local eatery.
The sighting comes just after Miss Alba returned home to California following a lengthy summer stay in Paris, France.
The break from work duties is welcome, as Jess will soon be getting into promotional mode with her movie "Machete" hitting theaters on September 3rd followed by the release of "An Invisible Sign" later in the year.

What do docs The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and Mad Hat Ballroom have in common? Both films received their world premiere in Park City, but not at Redford's festival but the other main street venue the hosts Slamdance. If I'm on target with my predictions, we'll be seeing the filmmakers of these docs, Seth Gordon (as a producer) and Marilyn Agrelo in Park City once again, but with Sundance credentials. - What do docs The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and Mad Hat Ballroom have in common? Jk Simmons and Chris Messina (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) have joined Jessica Alba in the cast of An Invisible Sign Of My Own. Marilyn Agrelo's "Amelie"-style indie follows the transformation of a sheltered, math-obsessed teacher when a new science teacher arrives at her school. And yeah Simmons is pretty great but let's be honest with each other here, the only possibly conclusion to this article is well hello there Jessica, I almost didn't see you in that bikini!

Marilyn Agrelo's indie project An Invisible Sign of My Own has gained two more great actors: J.K. Simmons and Chris Messina. The two will star alongside of Jessica Alba in a "whimsical fable" that follows the transformation of a sheltered, math-obsessed teacher when a new science teacher arrives at her school. I'm guessing that Alba will be play the math teacher and Messina potentially the science teacher. It's described as an Amelie-style film, for those looking for something interesting to grasp onto with this project. The screenplay was written by writing duo Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (of The Wedding Planner) and is an adaptation of Aimee Bender's book of the same name. I guess this should be interesting? I'm not the biggest fan of Jessica Alba, but I think she really needs some strong indie roles in order to improve her acting. Hopefully this is a movie...
