Hot off his HBO success, David E. Kelley is turning to another streamer for his latest dramatic saga. The writer and executive producer behind "Big Little Lies" and "The Undoing" is keeping the murder theme going with "The Lincoln Lawyer," a legal thriller with a premise you might just recognize. The series shares a name with Matthew McConaughey's 2011 film, both of which adapt Michael Connelly's series of novels about the criminal defense attorney, Mickey Haller.

Everyone has heard of the original film, which was released in 2011 and starred McConaughey as Mick Haller. Now, crime novelist Connelly’s second book in the series, “The Brass Verdict,” gets the Hollywood treatment thanks to creator and executive producer David E. Kelley. The Netflix series picks up after the death of Mickey’s former law partner, leaving him to take over the firm and dive into a high-profile murder trial. The series premieres May 13. Watch the trailer below.
An iconoclastic idealist, Mickey (Garcia-Rulfo) practices law out of the back of his Lincoln town car, driving throughout Los Angeles. Yet his new case reveals a conspiracy that goes deeper than he could have imagined.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is taking on a complex case in the first trailer for Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer.”
The TV series adaptation of the books by superstar crime fiction author Michael Connelly follow Garcia-Rulfo as lawyer Mickey Haller, who runs his practice out of a vintage Lincoln Town Car (hence the title).
In the trailer, which you can watch above, Garcia-Rulfo’s Haller has inherited the practice of another hot shot Los Angeles lawyer, including a high profile murder case. While it seems as though his career is only growing, his relationship with his family is getting rocky.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a legal drama without some mysterious happenings along the way, which usually end up with someone dead.
The logline for the series reads:

“Welcome to his office,” reads the tagline for the new Netflix series, The Lincoln Lawyer, premiering on Friday, May 13. Based on The Brass Verdict, the second book in The Lincoln Lawyer series by Michael Connelly, and created by David E. Kelley, the series follows Mickey Haller, who, as we see in the new trailer above, does his best thinking on the road, hence his nickname. Netflix “One thing I know: success is all about momentum,” he says. “In court, before you can win, you gotta believe you can win.” And if that’s not the case? “Then you better fake it ’til you make it.” The trailer not only offers a look at Mickey as a lawyer as well as the danger he’ll be in — someone’s following him — it also shows his personal life. His family worries about him, and while he wants them back, Maggie (Neve ...

Michelle Pfeiffer will never work with Emmy-winning writer, producer, and showrunner David E. Kelley. Why? Because it’s best for their real-life marriage.
“Big Little Lies” writer Kelley has frequently collaborated with Nicole Kidman on “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “The Undoing.” The mega producer also is behind Netflix’s “Anatomy of a Scandal” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” series, plus the upcoming HBO Max limited series “Love and Death.”
“Nobody writes, honestly, better for women than he does,” Pfeiffer said during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” April 7. “It’s unbelievable. And yet, I value our relationship more than a good part.”
The “First Lady” star has been married to Kelley since 1993 after their blind date at a bowling alley. But their shared passion for filmmaking is a double-edged sword.

Los Angeles On-Location Filming Continues To Rebound; FilmLA Says Second Quarter Was Best Since 2019
On-location filming in Los Angeles continued its rebound in the second quarter of 2021 after reaching pre-pandemic levels in each of the last two quarters, according to FilmLA, the city and county film permit office. This year’s second quarter – April through June – was the best quarter since late-2019.
On-location filming in the second quarter of 2021, which totaled 9,791 shoot days, also exceeded the pre-Covid four-year average of second quarters by 5.8%. During last year’s second quarter, which marked the first full quarter of the Covid-19 shutdown, on-location filming in Los Angeles totaled only 194 shoot days – a record low. Due to the industry’s pandemic lockdown, production was suspended in Los Angeles County between mid-March through mid-June 2020.
“By almost any available measure, the second quarter was good for filming in Los Angeles,” said FilmLA president Paul Audley, who noted, however, that “with local Covid-19 cases rising, it’s not clear whether that will be sustainable.

The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

Michael Connelly knows a thing or two about justice and murder. The writer/creator has been writing about those very things for decades and is showing no signs of slowing down. ABC has made decisions on three of its five outstanding drama pilots, passing on Triage, Dark Horse and the Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation. Meanwhile, Epic and Promised Land, whose final cuts are still being locked in, remain in consideration for midseason. They come from ABC Signature, has options on the casts until September I hear.
Dark Horse, which was not produced, and National Parks Investigation will be shopped by their lead studios, Universal Television and A+E Studios, respectively. Triage, from 20th Century TV, also may be shopped.
Second-cycle medical drama pilot Triage had a rollercoaster ride. The project, told in three different time frames, did not fare well with the first cut, did significantly better with the second cut, which had promising testing results, then cooled off during screenings but had enough of a momentum to be kept in contention back in May.
