A new installment for Lionsgate’s $3.3B franchise has been greenlit, and once again it’s a prequel, set 40 years after the events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Considering the last installment, which lacked Jennifer Lawrence, failed to replicate the success of the original trilogy, it’ll be interesting to see if Lionsgate can set things right this time.
In order to ensure the new prequel avoids the shortcomings of the 2023 release, the studio should take notes on what made the first one special. The foremost aspect that the Lawrence-led film nailed was its protagonist, which turned out to be a great role model that kids and young adults can look up to. But it might not have been the case if it wasn’t for Lawrence, who refused to yield to the studio’s decisions regarding how Katniss should appear.

The Hunger Games’ franchise has just got an exciting update having officially greenlit a movie adaptation for Suzanne Collins’ upcoming book titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, but not everyone in the fandom seems to be that happy about it.
So far there haven’t been so many details revealed either about the book or the film, yet it was made clear that the new installment would take its readers (and then viewers) back to the times of the 50th Hunger Games where Katniss Everdeen’s future mentor Haymitch Abernathy became the first female victor from District 12.
Previously, Haymitch has in fact been quite a frequent choice for getting his own movie when it came to fans’ discussions about whose story from the original trilogy they would love to hear next, though, now that the character is surely getting his own film, some fans found such a choice not the best option possible.

Sunrise on the Reaping Title Meaning Sheds Light on the Hunger Games' Beginnings - Main Image
The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins recently confirmed that there's another prequel story coming our way. But what fans don't get is the meaning behind the Sunrise on the Reaping title for Haymitch Abernathy's story.
Well, this article explores exactly that, while waiting for the fifth novel in the series to release in 2025.
Since The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes refers to how Lucy Gray Baird united the people through her song, contrasting Cornelius Snow's (and the Capitol's) snake-like tendencies of betrayal, how does Sunrise on the Reaping connect with Haymitch?

The project is generating plenty of hype with its first-look images and the talented cast attached to it. As you will most likely know, The Hunger Games novel series by Suzanne Collins is a pillar of modern young adult fiction and one of the most important franchises of our time. It started off as a trilogy of novels – The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010) – which was later adapted into a well-received and lucrative film series. In 2020, Collins wrote The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and we reported just yesterday that a new prequel novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, would be published on March 18, 2025. And while we have discussed a possible adaptation, we did not expect any official announcement anytime soon, seeing how the book is not even out yet.
But, just a day later, it was officially confirmed that a movie adaptation of the yet-unreleased novel Sunrise on the Reaping would be made and that it is scheduled for a November 20, 2026, theatrical release date.

The Hunger Games Gets New Prequel Set 40 Years After The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - Main Image
Franchise author Suzanne Collins plans to release another prequel for The Hunger Games, this time, set 40 years after the events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Learn more about its slated release date and story below!
Suzanne Collins' New Hunger Games Novel Slated For 2025 Release
The recent prequel Hunger Games story earned $337 million at the box office, despite the film only costing $100 million total.
Still, it could never compare to the original film franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen (Catching Fire had the highest-grossing with $865 million).
However, considering the Panem is a much larger place to explore, it comes as no surprise that Suzanne Collins is penning another prequel Hunger Games book.

Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer will reportedly join Michelle Yeoh in Prime Video’s upcoming spin-off TV series, Blade Runner 2099.

A new report suggests that Prime Video’s expensive-sounding TV series has now cast its lead: Hunter Schafer, perhaps best known for her role as Jules Vaughn in the hit show, Euphoria. Her other work includes The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, and a role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming Kinds Of Kindness.

We’ll make a return to Panem in 2026 as Lionsgate announces a new Hunger Games film. More on the story below.
Last year’s The Hunger Games: Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes was a welcome return to the world of Panem and introduced us to a much younger Coriolanus Snow, far before he became the villain we saw in the original four films.
The film grossed over $330 million at the global box office against a budget of $100m, making it successful enough for Lionsgate to consider a sequel – and one has just materialised.
It was announced yesterday that author Suzanne Collins is due to release a new Hunger Games book, titled Sunrise On The Reaping, in 2025, and Lionsgate announced a film adaptation would follow in 2026.
The book will take place 40 years after the events of Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes and will feature the Second Quarter Quell.

A recent rumor claimed that Jordan Peele met with Marvel Studios about potentially taking the helm of an upcoming movie, and we may now know which project he was speaking to Kevin Feige and co. about.
Though it took some convincing (and a few quid from his patrons), Jeff Sneider revealed the name of the film during the latest episode of The Hot Mic, and, as many speculated, it was indeed the long-awaited X-Men reboot.
Unfortunately, it sounds like things didn't work out.
Sneider heard that he took the meeting a few weeks ago, and isn't actually sure if he was being eyed to director or write. Since then, we got word that the movie has enlisted a writer in the form of Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes; 2016's Assassin’s Creed movie).
This doesn't mean Peele won't return to the project down the line...

Earlier today, the news broke that author Suzanne Collins is writing a new Hunger Games novel titled Sunrise on the Reaping. It will arrive in bookstores on March 18, 2025, and features a story which takes place 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
"With 'Sunrise on the Reaping,' I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,'" Collins explained. "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."
Fans of the hit franchise wasted no time speculating that this book is likely setting the stage for another movie and, unsurprisingly, Lionsgate has confirmed plans (via SFFGazette.com) for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on...

There is a new Hunger Games movie in the works, and this time it will be a prequel about Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 tribute and champion played by Woody Harrelson in the original cycle of films in the 2010s. The news came simultaneously Thursday with the announcement of the book upon which the film will be based: Suzanne Collins’ forthcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
According to the press release, the new Young Adult novel and film will follow the events of the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell, when Haymitch became an unwilling tribute as a teenager. Presumably the experiences he endured both in the arena and the Capitol will turn him into the bitter middle-aged drunkard who Katniss Everdeen meets and redeems over the course of the original The Hunger Games story, which is set 24 years after the events of Sunrise on the Reaping.

Greetings to District 13 – it’s been a big day for Hunger Games news. First came the information that author Suzanne Collins has penned a new book in her dystopian murder-fest series, entitled Sunrise On The Reaping, arriving in March 2025. And then, swiftly after, came the other update fans had been hoping for: a film adaptation is on the way, officially titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping. Yes, it’s time to head back into the arena, delving into a set of Games that has long been ripe for exploring.
Both Collins’ book and the film adaptation will be set in the realm of the 50th Hunger Games – 24 years before Katniss Everdeen became a tribute, and 40 years after Lucy Gray Baird competed in the 10th Hunger Games in The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes. "The Hunger Games" are far from over. Not only has it been confirmed that author Suzanne Collins is continuing the franchise with a brand new prequel novel, but Lionsgate has also announced that the forthcoming book will be turned into a movie. Titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," the book is due to hit shelves in 2025, with the movie dated for 2026. Most crucially, this new story will fill in the history of a character fans have wanted to know more about for a long time. Namely, Haymitch Abernathy.
According to a press release, the book will hit shelves on March 18, 2025. Lionsgate wasted precisely zero time in getting the rights to the film locked up. Francis Lawrence, who has directed every entry in the franchise save for the original, is in talks to return for this latest installment. That makes every bit of sense given the success of last year's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes...

Bright and early this morning, the AP reported that Suzanne Collins was at work on a new “Hunger Games” novel, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” And sure enough, Lionsgate is already at work on turning that book into another new “Hunger Games” movie. The film adaptation already has a theatrical-release date.
The big-screen version of “Sunrise on the Reaping” will be released by Lionsgate on November 20, 2026, after Collins’ book publishes from Scholastic on March 18, 2025.
And the whole crew is back to shepherd this new “Hunger Games” movie, including franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her partner Brad Simpson for their Color Force banner. Francis Lawrence, who has directed each film since “Catching Fire,” is in talks to return to this one as well. No cast has been announced.

The Hunger Games novel series by Suzanne Collins is a pillar of modern young adult fiction and one of the most important franchises of our time. It started off as a trilogy of novels – The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010) – which was later adapted into a well-received and lucrative film series. In 2020, Collins wrote The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel novel that was also recently adapted into a movie, and we have just received confirmation that Sunrise on the Reaping, another prequel novel, will officially be published on March 18, 2025, expanding the fictional universe of The Hunger Games.
The novel has been kept under wraps for some time, but this piece of news is certainly exciting as we now know that Collins has not given up on the franchise, which means that more works might appear in the future, which would be great!

A new Hunger Games novel by author Suzanne Collins will be published on March 18, 2025, publisher Scholastic announced today. Sunrise on the Reaping will be the fifth in the dystopian book series.
The new book will be set 24 years before the original Hunger Games novel and 40 years after the most recent installment The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
While Collins pointed to such influences as Greek mythology and Roman gladiators for her earlier entries in the series, she said the new one owes a nod to Enlightenment philosopher David Hume.
“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’ The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. Author Suzanne Collins is returning to the world of Panem.
Collins and her publisher Scholastic on Thursday announced that a new installment in the Hunger Games series will be released next year.
The new book — the fifth in the series — will be called Sunrise on the Reaping, and is set for release March 18, 2025.
Later on Thursday, Lionsgate announced that a new film is in the works based on the novel; The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be the sixth movie in the franchise.
Sunrise will take place 24 years before the events of the first novel The Hunger Games, “starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” per Scholastic. Those Games are noteworthy given that the victor was Haymitch Abernathy, the only winner from District 12 prior to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s dual win 24 years later. Haymitch,...

Suzanne Collins has announced that a new “Hunger Games” novel, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will be released next year.
According to the Associated Press, the fifth novel in Collins’ bestselling series — which has been turned into a successful movie franchise — is also a prequel to the original trilogy, taking place 40 years after the events of the most recent tale, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the film adaptation of which released last year. “Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to release on March 18, 2025.
“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,’” Collins told the AP. “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.

Tom Blyth, the breakout star of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is all set to lead another popular IP. He is confirmed to be the lead in the film adaptation of Watch Dogs, the hit video game from Ubisoft. New Regency will produce the film helmed by French director Mathieu Turi. Blyth will star opposite Talk to Me fame Sophie Wilde.

The film adaptation comes after years of being in development hell. Rumors of a film adaptation began in 2013, and it went into development in 2014. Interestingly, the positive update on the film comes at a time when fans largely believe that Ubisoft is done with the franchise.

Up until now, Jordan Peele has only worked on his own original projects, largely avoiding major franchises. However, he was attached to helm Warner Bros.' live-action Akira movie at one point, and while things didn't work out, the fact that he was in contention does suggest that he would be willing to board a big studio blockbuster under the right circumstances.
Could a particular Marvel Studios property have caught Peele's interest?
According to Jeff Sneider in the latest edition of his newsletter, Peele has met with the studio about potentially taking the helm of an upcoming MCU movie. Sneider doesn't name the project, but did indicate that he knew what it was with the following X post.
If I get 100 news subs by morning I’ll tell all of you what Marvel movie Peele met on tmrw night. I work for You, don’t you get that? I try...

Seems like Prime Video is in its The Hunger Games era, as the streaming has recently added all the flicks that the franchise has so far.
Several days ago four of The Hunger Games movies arrived on Prime Video, becoming some kind of a gift to longtime fans that now have another reason to binge-watch it all again, but the collection got even bigger after The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes also made its way to the streaming.
What Is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes About?
Released back in 2023, the movie comes as a prequel to the original trilogy, following the earlier years of future President of Panem Coriolanus Snow when he involuntarily becomes an essential part of the relentless game of survival. Despite being fired as X-Men '97 showrunner (the details are still sketchy) shortly before the series premiered on Disney+, Beau DeMayo has remained active on social media, sharing intriguing insights into the development of the animated revival show and revealing some of his key influences.
DeMayo has previously explained how the iconic "Superman takes flight" sequence from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel inspired a similar moment from episode 6 featuring Storm regaining her powers, and has now revealed that a different scene may have "subconsciously influenced" Rogue attacking the villainous Bastion in the recent season finale.
This was yet another standout moment for Rogue, who unleashed the full extent of her power while channelling the pain and rage she felt after losing Gambit in the Genosha massacre
I was likely subconsciously influenced by this when writing the #xmen97 finale beat of Rogue punching Bastion. That’s not Superman hammering Zod.

The trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film has arrived. The filmmaker has already followed up his Poor Things run with Kinds of Kindness, which reunites him with the Academy Award-winning star of his last film, Emma Stone, as well as her Poor Things co-star, Willem Dafoe. The new trailer from Searchlight Pictures displays the chaotic nature of the film, with all the clips feeling non-sequitur. And with Sweet Dreams providing the soundtrack for the trailer, it certainly hammers home the dream-like feeling of this abstract movie.
When director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone make a feature film together, Academy Award nominations follow. Their 2018 collaboration The Favourite was nominated in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design, Cinematography, and Editing categories, with supporting actresses Stone and Rachel Weisz also earning nominations and lead actress Olivia Colman taking home an Oscar for her performance. As George Miller’s oil and blood-fuelled Furiosa hits the screens, we ponder what makes a great prequel.
Mild spoilers for The First Omen.
There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.
George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.
Prequels are an easy sell for studios, but a hard sell for audiences. For studios, they’re an easy way...

This weekend, the box office looked more like a Wasteland than the fruitful Green Place of Many Mothers.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” underperformed in its box office debut with $25.6 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Instead of ruling the box office as expected, it’s in a shockingly close race for first place with Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie,” which collected $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the four days. Neither could salvage the holiday weekend, which is the worst it’s been in nearly three decades.
It wasn’t just domestic audiences that failed to show up for “Furiosa.” The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its worldwide tally to $58.9 million. At long last, it seems the MCU is getting closer to its mutation. We’re only two months away from Deadpool & Wolverine, which in its own way will bring something of an evolutionary leap to Marvel’s cinematic DNA. The world is still raving about the stellar first season of animated show X-Men ’97. And now, there are signs that we’re getting closer to the thing fans have been really waiting for: a proper MCU X-Men movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a writer has been hired to write such a thing – and the person tasked with that almighty responsibility is Michael Lesslie.
Given the amount of secrecy around Marvel’s X-Men plans, it’s unknown what brief Lesslie has been given – but he’s currently putting pen to paper on bringing Xavier’s team to the big screen. Lesslie previously served as lead writer on Park Chan-wook...

X-Men '97 was a big hit with critics right from the start, but the Disney+ revival series has now become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project - live-action or animated, big or small screen - in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With more reviews now counted for last Wednesday's season finale, X-Men '97 has reached a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This takes it past Marvel's previous top-rated Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel (98%), and movie, Black Panther (96%), to become the most positively-reviewed MCU project of all time on the popular aggregator site.
The series wasn't only a critical favourite, as Deadline reports that May 15th's cameo-filled finale, "Tolerance is Extinction, Part 3," amassed a whopping 3.5 million views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform, making it the most-viewed full-length animated series finale since Season 1 of What If…?.

We might finally be getting a new X-Men film as Michael Lesslie has been tapped to write a new film for Marvel.
It looks like the X-Men have come to stay in the MCU. After the disappointing Dark Phoenix, the X-Men have been laying low until we got quick teases in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels before Deadpool & Wolverine re-introduces everyone’s favourite grumpy mutant proper.
Deadline now reports that Marvel is planning a proper X-Men movie and Michael Lesslie is in negotiations to pen the script. Lesslie wrote last year’s Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, proving he can adapt someone else’s material. Lesslie has also penned the script for the new Now You See Me sequel which will be filming later this year.
The film is officially in development, but it’s still early days and there is no news...
