YouTube's original viral star, Lonelygirl15, returned to the Internet on Thursday after a nearly eight year absence. The reincarnation comes 10 years to the day after Lonelygirl15's first video, which gained her channel hundred and thousands of followers, making it one of YouTube's earliest viral sensations. The vlogs, which followed the life of a 16-year-old girl named Bree, were ordinary in nature. Bree would discuss her home life, complaining about homework and being home-schooled. She'd gush about her friend Daniel, and goof off in front of the camera. But Lonelygirl15's popularity soon took off. Her Myspace page was flooded with follower requests.

YouTube was a strange phenomenon at its start, as many didn’t know what to do with it. Aspiring filmmakers Miles Beckett and Mesh Flinders, however, slowly realized that it was an opportunity for a rather new kind of storytelling — one that lives again today.
In a recent interview with Vocativ, Beckett said, “I thought about how I didn’t know if any of the videos on YouTube were real or not — you kind of blur the lines of reality and fiction.” With that inspiration, the pair created a YouTube channel called “Lonelygirl15” on June 16, 2006, which utilized video blogging (“vlogging”) to tell the story of Bree Avery and her family’s strange cult society, known as the Order.
Thought to be one of if not the first of its kind, the series quickly shot off the ground, getting half a million views on a video for the first time only months after it started. When it all wrapped up, the videos had garnered over 60 million views. And 10 years to the date after the first episode, Bree is back.

Miles Beckett, Jenni Powell — a producer behind the Emmy-winning “The Lizzie Bennett Diaries” — and more have teamed up to bring viewers back to the world of “Lonelygirl15.” Powell said in an email announcing the show’s return that “the hope is to not only tie up storylines for fans of the original series but to bring the show to a whole new audience while utilizing technologies that weren’t available 10 years ago to create new storytelling experiences.”
The re-entry video brings up a lot of the lore of the show, diving deep into the strange, cult elements with both dialogue and video editing. And so it might be time to catch up with what was a cultural phenomenon 10 years ago — to prepare for what may be a new phenomenon today.

When it launched on June 16, 2006, Lonelygirl15 broke the digital mold. What seemed like a run-of-the-mill vlog created by a teenage everygirl named Bree turned out to be an intricately orchestrated fictional series -- with groundbreaking interactive features and sci-fi plot twists -- that was light years ahead of the curve in terms of showcasing YouTube’s potential as a platform for scripted content.
And now, on this -- the very day 10 years ago that Bree uploaded her first vlog -- some of the minds behind the series are readying a reprisal of sorts. Lonelygirl co-creator Miles Beckett and Jenni Powell, who was a die-hard fan before being hired as a production assistant on the show, tell Tubefilter that they are teaming to create new content within the Lonelygirl universe.
“There hasn’t been new Lonelygirl content since 2008,” says Beckett, who created the series alongside Greg Goodfried, who is currently an agent at UTA, and Mesh Flinders, an associate creative director at communications company Havas. “But there’s always been interest -- the channel still gets hundreds of thousands of views, it's constantly being referenced by other YouTubers, and we’ve had a lot of fans asking for more.”

The new SciFiRiot channel, run by Digiriot, has added a Streamy-winning director to its list of talent. The second season of Blake Calhoun's Continuum has been released for free on the recently minted science fiction hub, which has filled out a full weekly schedule of new shows. Continuum is Calhoun's most recent project, following up his Streamy winner, Pink. It stars LonelyGirl15's Melanie Merkosky as an intergalactic Jason Bourne of sorts who must spacewalk around her haunting, sterile ship looking for answers. After season one arrived in full back in early 2012, Calhoun released season two in April on pay-to-view platform Jts.tv. More than three months later, all nine episodes are now under SciFiRiot's control, and it has now released the first one. Continuum joins five other new shows on SciFiRiot; some, like Neubauer, a futuristic neo-noir, are classic, hard sci-fi. Others, such as Sci-Fine Dining, whimsically fuse together multiple genres (cooking,...

Josh Levin wrote this great review of Zombieland for Slate back in 2009. His thesis states that Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Emma Stone’s romp through the undead, Bill Murray’s mansion, and the Southwestern United States is so good because the action unspools less like a movie and more like a movie made by a gamer who’s obsessed with first-person shooters. Here’s an excerpt: Zombie cinema has already been sliced into such thin micro-genres— zombie pole dancers! zombie Nazis! — that auteurs of the undead should probably stop striving for originality. And yet Zombieland is something new, perhaps because it borrows from another medium. While the movie may not have been hatched inside a PlayStation, Zombieland reveals why every video-game movie ever made has been horrendous. Games, particularly the kind that get optioned by Hollywood, are supposed to be fun. Movies based on games, however, take themselves altogether too seriously,...

Yousef Abu-Taleb was no stranger to web series when he signed on for Bite Me, the hit zombie comedy whose second season is debuting here on FEARnet. There’s a secret to building a hit web series; to writing the perfect story or cultural commentary that people can’t help but share. It’s elusive and the people who accidentally stumble upon it grow fewer with each passing year. Today, the overnight viral sensations (like Shit Girls Say) tend to be intentional and cautiously developed over time (Sgs creator, Graydon Sheppard, built a 54,000 person twitter following before creating a corresponding online series). Still, idiotic, super-cute, and extreme videos keep landing in my Inbox. It may be because we humans have a difficult time turning away from spectacle. But more than that, those videos might possess the elements that web series producer and show runner, Tim Street (VP of Mobile Video at mDialog and creator of French Maid TV) frequently and publicly proclaims to be the key to engaging an audience: Activate two or more emotions at the same time.

Almost four years after Bree’s death on Lonelygirl15, the creators of one of the most engaging and popular original web series endemic to the YouTube generation are no longer producing video. Eqal co-founders Miles Beckett (CEO) and Greg Goodfried (President) have long since abandoned serialized dramas in favor of building online communities around already established household brand names and entertainment properties. They devoted a portion of the $5 million in Series A funding the company raised back in 2008 to accomplish those community-building efforts (the other part of the cash was used to develop a technology platform and finance some of Eqal's last web serials). Now, Eqal is raising more cash to build more online communities even better. Based on recent SEC filings, Techcrunch reports the media company is looking to raise $3.5 million (of which, it’s raised $649,994 so far). I caught up with Beckett over e-mail to try to get...

The first day at SXSW, the 4th floor. “What’s this line for?” I asked the woman standing next to me. “No idea,” she said. But it wasn’t a line for anything. The crowd was just there. And as I pushed my way through, it slowly started to dissipate. It was like one of those highway slowdowns, where the memory of congestion lingers after whatever caused it.
If you’re going to sponsor a festival, at least do something useful, like this rolling Samsung display of panel times, schedule changes and social media activity.
When you check into SXSW, you’re given three things: the catalog, your badge, and a punch card giving you one free Macallan single malt a day.

A Man crouches on a 3-foot-by-3-foot glass-top table in a dank basement near the Los Angeles River, just outside of downtown L.A. The man is a contortionist. He's wearing a skintight, hooded latex body condom, bone white, zipped up the back to the top of his head, with holes for his eyes and a zipper over his mouth.
He nonchalantly folds a leg behind his neck and scratches his head with his toes. Next to him is a gallon jar of snails, and on a table, a pile of salt has been cut into lines in the shape of a maze. With a razor blade, the contortionist scrapes the glass clean between the lines, then deposits a snail in the center.

Crackle doesn’t like minorities. Just kidding! April Fools’, ya know? But really, every day is April Fools’ Day in the new original web series True Colors. The new American Attorney General Eric Holder recently remarked that the United States is “a nation of cowards” when it comes to race relations. With some evocative language, Mr. Holder aimed to bring about an open and honest dialogue about race in this country. Now Crackle has stepped up to the plate. True Colors aims to extract funny by exposing the racism that’s just below the surface of American life, with covert spy cameras…but I’m not sure if, in its own comedic way, Crackle will spark the debate that Holder so desired, or if this simply reinforces his initial point. Are we facing our True Colors or just skirting the real issues? Filmed on location in Las Vegas at the...

When I met up with Eqal co-founders Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried last September, they mentioned their ambition to turn lonelygirl15 and its interconnected series of “social shows” into a ”Star Wars-type franchise.” I took that to mean developing and nurturing a mythology that’s replete with characters and images ripe for merchandising and beloved by a specific subculture but still accessible to the general public. Last week, Eqal announced a deal with Polish producers Agora and A2 Multimedia to create at new chapter in the LG15 universe, n1ckola. Eqal, the “social entertainment company” founded by Lonelygirl15 and KateModern creators Miles Becket and Greg Goodfried, is soliciting its fan base to help add a substantial body of work to the Lonelygirl canon. Dubbed LG15: The Show is Yours, the crowdsourcing contest asks viewers to create episode one or a “pilot presentation” of what will become an eight week spin-off series that incorporates and builds upon the mythology of the Breeniverse. Interested parties must present a treatment for the “social show” and the winner will be responsible for producing at least two videos per week, along with “additional content such as pictures, text blogs, and interactivity.” An Eqal producer may also be brought on board to make sure the series stays on schedule and consistent with pre-existing storylines. Here’s the pitch: Drew at Tubefilter wonders if this is a bad omen for the brand. Yes. It is. The...

A while back I wondered which of the inaugural lineup of Strike.TV web series will be the standout, and I think we have our answer. With the Angels, the dramatic web series from creator (and former lonelygirl15 writer) Mary Feuer, released its season finale today, wrapping up an ambitious 36 episode first season. And in that time, the series has picked up an healthy following known to debate some hefty issues, everything from faith to existentialism and Kierkegaard. Starring Jamie Tisdale as the young small town Arkansas ingenue Taffy, the With the Angels charts her arrival in Venice, California, thrusting her into an unfamiliar world surrounded by unfamiliar people. But through her we come to watch those strangers become friends—friends of our own even—closer and realer than what we've come to expect out in scripted entertainment. The unfamiliar becomes the familiar. With an ensemble cast including Carly Jones (Mallory in lonelygirl15), René Alvarado,...
