Sometimes horror filmmakers go far from merely scaring the audience by shocking images and loud sounds and turn their films into pure art. These visuals are often beyond the imaginable limits as they both please the eye and creep you out even more.
Here are 7 horrors, picked by Reddit due to their outstanding visual part.
1. The Cell (2000)
Indeed, this sci-fi horror “was a visual feast”, as voiced by Redditor @Matthew-_-Black. The story of a comatose serial killer put in an experimental virtual reality treatment in order to locate his last victim is here enhanced by sleek futuristic design elements.
2. Mandy (2018)
Nicolas Cage’s flick about an enraged man on his journey towards bloody revenge is full of spectacular depictions of a nightmarish cult life and their supernatural and psychedelic experience. It’s highly praised for its unique red-colored visual style.
3. Suspiria (1977)
“It's so vivid and colorful,” admits @BrokeFartFountain about Dario Argento's cultish film.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a movie musical where the words “mammoplasty, vaginoplasty, rhinoplasty” play out in song. Nor have you lived until you’ve seen that same movie musical in which Selena Gomez says the words “My pussy still hurts when I think of you.” And you’ve never seen a movie musical at all about transness that takes as bold of swings as Jacques Audiard‘s “Emilia Pérez,” which is stylistically unforgettable while missing the crucial element that makes any movie musical work: Actually good, memorable songs.

Puppet Combo are once again taking it old-school in more ways than one. Originally released in 2019 on itch.io, the developer has announced that their PS2 Survival Horror-inspired title The Glass Staircase will be headed to Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch on May 24.
Described as “a short-form old-school psychological horror game”, The Glass Staircase takes place in 1922, inside a dilapidated estate converted into an orphanage. Four girls attempt to survive long enough to complete their chores and find a new home. As these things go, unknowable horrors have punctuated the history of the house, and they’re about to learn about them the hard way.
Rather than focusing on grotesque slasher horror, The Glass Staircase is a surreal and atmospheric game, inspired by PS2 survival horror titles like Silent Hill 2 and the GameCube classic Eternal Darkness. Of course, you have to toss in those classic 80s Italian horror movies such as The Beyond,...

The year of 2022 was quite fruitful for horror features, as we saw such genre’s gems, as Barbarian, The Menu, Smile and Scream. However, they all didn’t make enough noise to be everywhere on the Net not only at the time, but over the course of these 2 years too.
There is one movie which obviously managed to do so, given the enormous amount of memes, viral videos and Halloween costumes inspired by it. It’d be surprising to hear that it appears to be a sequel, but it definitely overhyped the original movie.
Its plot focuses on the life of a mentally ill young woman forced to live with her abusive parents and her husband at the farm. She can’t stand this way of life and lusts for the glamorous life of a chorus girl or a film star, but her dreams don't seem to come true.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino knows how to make a goddamn movie. That was clear to fans of his earlier works, like the sumptuous "I Am Love," more than a decade ago. It was clear to most other people about five years ago when the bold one-two punch of "Call Me By Your Name" and "Suspiria" made moviegoers sit up and pay attention. And it's more clear than ever now, with the release of the director's latest (and reportedly biggest-budgeted) effort, the endlessly thrilling Zendaya-led sports drama "Challengers." Film after film, Guadagnino manages to tap into some hidden corners of our hearts by telling stories that are evocative and colorful, musical and sensual, messy and true.
Though Guadagnino has gained more attention in recent years, the filmmaker has actually been working since the '90s and has by now made eight narrative (or meta-narrative) features, a TV show, and several documentaries and shorts.

Being recognized as one of the most talented young actresses of the 21st century, Mia Goth presents horror as her trademark genre. Starting from A Cure for Wellness (2016), the actress has been proving that she impeccably fits in the genre, continuing the fruitful trend of her career with the incredibly successful 2022 slashers X and Pearl.
However, there is a lesser-known 2023 horror movie, where Goth fully reveals her potential as the genre’s queen. Despite its sophisticated nature, it definitely appears to be a must-watch for all fans of the actress and for the most curious cinephiles.
Set in an isolated island resort, it focuses on the married couple, the writer in a creative crisis and his unhappy wife, coming there on a vacation. They meet Goth’s mysterious Gabi, who starts to show them the other side of the resort alongside her husband.

Up-and-coming tennis star Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) has it all in the palm of her hand — talent, success, and future opportunities. Meanwhile, Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor) are a duo who share a bond beyond their rackets, with the meeker Art being shaped into manhood by the boisterous Patrick. When Tashi’s career stops in its tracks, it’s a duel for attention between the boys, forming an uneasy yet seductive triad.
Oh Luca Guadagnino, you’ve done it again. The acclaimed director has already painted incredibly broad strokes with his somehow cohesive back catalogue, from sexy cannibals in Bones and All to a coven of ravenous witches in Suspiria. Luca Guadagnino isn’t exactly known for mainstream box office success, with credits on his resume like Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria and Bones and All. However, you take a young rising star like Zendaya and create a sexy love triangle around her in a sports setting, then as the late great Carl Weathers would say, “Baby, you got a stew going!” Guadagnino’s sports romance drama, Challengers, would open to $1.9 million at the box office in Thursday night previews.
According to Variety, while the R-rated film isn’t going to bust any blocks, as romance dramas rarely do, but the Amazon MGM movie is expected to win the weekend with an estimated $12 million to $15 million gross. Yorke’s Confidenza score was produced by previous collaborator Sam Petts-Davies. Consisting of 12 tracks, the album was recorded with the London Contemporary Orchestra alongside a jazz ensemble that included Robert Stillman and Yorke’s bandmate in The Smile, Tom Skinner. It’s only fitting that on the day the score drops for Challengers, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke’s first score since Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria would arrive. The month of April seemingly sailed by with far too many moderate releases, and the month ends this weekend with more of the same. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino returns with the sexy tennis drama “Challengers,” starring the powerhouse trio of Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”) and Mike Faist (“West Side Story”) as superstar tennis players who fall into a competitive love triangle. This is Zendaya’s first movie after “Dune: Part Two,” and it will be a real test for her as a box office star, since sports dramas can be hit or miss. “Challengers” really is riding on her popularity to avoid the pitfalls of the genre.

While some may contest whether his new film – Challengers – is, in fact, director Luca Guadagnino’s best film, it is undeniable that this is, simply put, a great film.
In Challengers stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy named Tashi Duncan who, after a brutal injury ends her career, turns to coaching and while serving as such for her husband – Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), himself a tennis champion, though currently besought by a losing streak – orchestrates a final confrontation between Art and his former friend and rival for Tashi’s affections, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). As the two old friends face each other in the most important match of their lives, their troubled relationship plays out as flashbacks between sets.

As the two old friends face each other in the most important match of their lives, their troubled relationship plays out as flashbacks between sets.

"I am a film director, and I work with a visual language, with a visual medium. And I try to make virtue of the use of this visual medium. And I try to make sure what I do speaks the language of cinema." –Luca Guadagnino. His latest film Challengers (final trailer here) is finally landing in theaters for everyone to enjoy this week. In celebration of this release, the UK movie magazine Little White Lies and video editor Luís Azevedo have created a supercut highlighting "The Colors Of Luca Guadagnino." It's a quick video at just 2-1/2 minutes featuring shots from almost all of his films, showing how he works his way through hot and cold colors depending on the mood. No matter what, his film always have vivid colors. Guadagnino's exceptional filmography includes: The Protagonists (1999), Melissa P. (2005), I Am Love (2009), A Bigger Splash (2015), Call Me By Your Name (2017), Suspiria...

Amazon MGM Studios has released the final trailer for Challengers, starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court.
Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick—his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
As their pasts and present collide and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself what it will cost to win. In addition to the trailer, you can also watch a featurette on the film’s music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers is rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, and graphic nudity. The drama will open in theaters on Friday, April 26, 2024.
Guadagnino directed the movie from a script by Justin Kuritzkes.

“If I were you, I’d run away/Get out while you still can,” Thom Yorke sings on his new song “Knife Edge.” “‘Cause this to me is life or death/And all I think about.” The pensive song, which ambles along slowly with piano and sparse strings, comes off the soundtrack to Confidenza, a new film by director Daniele Luchetti (My Brilliant Friend).
The music video for the tune shows footage from the movie, which is based on author Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same title about a doomed couple.

Thom Yorke, frontman of Radiohead and The Smile, has composed the original score for Daniele Luchetti’s new film Confidenza.
Confidenza marks Yorke’s second film score, following his contributions to Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria. As a preview of his latest effort, Yorke has shared the visual for “Knife Edge” and its B-side, “Prize Giving.” Check out both songs below.
Spanning a total of 12 tracks, Yorke’s score for Confidenza will recorded with the London Contemporary Orchestra alongside a jazz ensemble which included Robert Stillman and Yorke’s bandmate in The Smile, Tom Skinner. It will be released digitally this Friday, April 26th via Xl Recordings, with a physical release following on July 12th.
Confidenza is an adaptation of Domenico Starnone’s 2019 novel of the same name. Starring Elio Germano, Vittoria Puccini, and Isabella Ferrari, the Italian drama centers around an affair between a teacher named Pietro and his former student Teresa.

The 1970s– an era of “unrest and mistrust, fear and violence,” says the opening minutes of Colin and Cameron Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil, accurately reflecting the viewpoint of the burgeoning moral panic of the time. Fear mongering-ish as that sounds, after a decade of Christianity in crisis mode– including a 1966 Times cover asking, “Is God Dead?”– and the “Satanic” cult murders by the Manson Family in 1969, the ’70s were a time of peak (at least until then) obsession with all things occult, planting the seeds and ultimately leading to what would be known as the full-blown Satanic Panic in the decade to follow. The devil was believed to be real, and he was to be feared, expelled, and/or worshiped– in real life and reflected in dozens and dozens of horror films and countless categories of other media within that era.

Available now from Fantagraphics, Tender is a compelling body horror graphic novel from Beth Hetland that you won't be able to put down. Drawing from her own personal experiences and inspired by a wide range of horror classics, Beth Hetland has crafted something really special in Tender and we have a preview you can read right now! Beth also took part in a Q&a, where we talk about the origins of the graphic novel, horror influences, and more!
What inspired the story of Tender and how did you end up teaming with Fantagraphic for your graphic novel debut?
The idea came from several places, not just one major inspiration. Some of it is pulled from my own anxieties and some of it is in response to events happening to people close to me. I get a lot of atmospheric inspiration from horror movies or eerie locations that creep me out.

Out this week in theaters is Radio Silence’s Abigail, a heist-turned-bloodbath when kidnappers realize the child ballerina they’ve snatched isn’t quite human. That the petite vampire is a ballerina feels apt. After all, the deceptive art form has a reputation for dainty elegance that belies the sheer grueling dedication of its performers, both physically and mentally.
Ballet requires a high level of dedication to practice and performance and frequently spills over into body horror through broken toenails, stress fractures, and overuse injuries. In other words, ballet is often a mix of pain and beauty, which means it pairs well with horror.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ballerinas in horror.
These horror movies feature at least one ballerina tormented by her art form, highlighting the stark, beguiling contrast between beauty and horror. Here’s where you can stream them now.

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger. Wearing cheap shorts that resemble boxers, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) battles Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), clad in head-to-toe Uniqlo, while the glamorous Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya) watches tensely from the stands. Flashbacks, first from a few days prior, and then way back to 13 years ago, slowly fill in the gaps on how these two former best friends ended up in such a position: playing against one another in a mid-tier tennis challenger comically sponsored by a tire brand.
Even as Challengers zips back and forth in time with boundless energy, the narrative, to Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes’ credit, is never hard to follow. Sometimes the foreknowledge afforded by time jumps end up sacrificing drama, but in Challengers this sacrifice makes space for us to feel the burden of these broken relationships.

One needn't do a very deep internet search to find news outlets doing some adolescent tittering about the threesome scene in Luca Guadagnino's new love-triangle sports drama "Challengers." I am disappointed to report that the scene in question is not a threesome, but a brief three-way make-out session that lasts maybe 90 seconds. It's no more salacious than one might see at the average screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Anyone who has watched "Y tu Mamá También" or "The Dreamers" has already enjoyed more sexual intensity.
The brief makeout, however, more or less cements long-standing romantic and sexual chemistry for the three involved. "Challengers" is about struggling through your 20s, using the echoes of your adolescence to form lasting bonds that, with enough time, ferment into resentment. Each of the male leads will, at some point, say a version of the line "He's not really in love with you,...

Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winning actress who has been a favorite of both the art house crowd and the multiplexes, consistently taking on challenging roles in both indie fare and box office hits. Let’s take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1960 in London, England, Swinton got her start working with experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, making her movie debut in the director’s “Caravaggio” (1986). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in his film “Edward II” (1991), kicking off a decades-long romance between the actress and awards groups. She also showed her willingness to push herself in offbeat projects with daring auteurs, an edict that would lead to collaborations with Luca Guadanigno, Jim Jarmusch, Bong Joon Ho, Sally Potter, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

From Goblin's signature theme for "Suspiria" to the viral success of Richard Carter's "Talk To Me" track "Le Monde," the right song at the right time can be the making of a great horror movie. "We can try a billion songs," says Matt Bettinelli-Olpin — co-director with Tyler Gillett of upcoming ballerina vampire movie "Abigail" — but when they hit on the perfect track, "We go, 'Oh f**k, that's the song. That's great. It hits all the notes."
Sometimes the right song isn't out there yet, and the movie calls for a new one to be written from scratch. When the directing duo needed an old-timey "Hide and Seek" tune with a Vincent Price-esque narrator for their 2019 horror-comedy "Ready or Not," they couldn't find one — so they asked "Southbound" composers Louis Castle and James Bairian (known collectively as The Gifted) to write something original. This 70s-set prelude to the classic satanic horror has flair but struggles with the weight and familiarity of what came before
We didn’t need a prequel to landmark 1976 horror The Omen but we’d have been foolish not to expect one. The major genre films of that era – Halloween, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, Suspiria – have all seen a new round of remakes, reboots and remixes in the last few years – some tolerable, most not – and so another Damien chapter is as inevitable as the rise of Damien himself.
It’s not the first time anyone has tried either. After the series sputtered out in 1991 with the cheapo gender-swapped TV movie Omen IV: The Awakening, the films went the way of most horror during that decade and it took until 2006, a time of anything-goes, mostly gutter-level remakes, for the sixes to align once again. It was a...

"I loved making this film. It's a rollercoaster... and you feel that." MGM Studios has revealed a featurette for Challengers, the latest film from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. It's finally landing in theaters this month! Following a long delay from last year. After a losing streak, the wife and coach of a Grand Slam champion signs him up for a Challenger event where he will face off against her former lover – and his former competitor. The full cast includes Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist as the trio caught up in this lovers' quarrel, plus A.J. Lister and Jake Jensen. The two official trailers for this have been mostly good, this featurette adds a bit more context to Tashi, Zendaya's character, though there isn't much footage as it's less than 60 seconds long. We'll add more featurettes below for Challengers as they're unveiled. Looking forward to finally seeing this in a few weeks.

As Benjamin Franklin famously wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
The horror genre offers a controlled environment in which viewers can reflect on their own morality, whether it be via catharsis or escapism, but a personal loss can complicate one’s relationship with horror. Even the most hardened of fans may struggle to find comfort in the genre after experiencing the death of a loved one.
45 years ago today, Phantasm helped viewers confront death head-on while subtly exploring the grief that accompanies it. In the film, 13-year-old Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) convinces his older brother-turned-guardian Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their affable neighborhood ice cream man, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), to investigate a mysterious mortician dubbed The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).

This article contains spoilers for "Immaculate."
From the late 1960s to the 1970s, religious horror cinema reigned. Free of the censorious Hays Code, Hollywood could be transgressive again. Americans were generally more Christian 50 years ago than they are today, so scary movies where the horror literally comes from the Devil? Those struck right at the heart of the public.
"Immaculate" is the new convent-set horror film directed by Michael Mohan and starring Sydney Sweeney as the Messiah-bearing Sister Cecilia. It's also a throwback to those mid-20th-century religious horror movies. Yes, "Immaculate" takes narrative beats Dario Argento's witchy giallo "Suspiria" too (though with much earthier lighting) — an innocent American girl flies to Europe and discovers a sinister plot at the communal house she stays in and must narrowly run/fight her way out. As for what that conspiracy is though? "Immaculate" takes more after 1968's "Rosemary's Baby." Mohan thinks so,...

The Euphoria breakout goes all-in with a fun, nasty slab of nunsploitation that also acts as commentary on female bodily autonomy
Some movie stars disappear behind their roles. Not Sydney Sweeney. The Euphoria and Anyone But You actor is the kind of familiar presence whose pop cultural imprint is so large that it threatens to trample over her characters. It doesn’t help that Sweeney rarely if ever switches up her distinct millennial drawl or the endearingly self-conscious way she carries herself, which practically breaks the illusion and invites the conflation between her own public persona and the people she plays.
For some movies, that could be detrimental. But Immaculate, a fun and nasty little throwback to Rosemary’s Baby and giallo films like Suspiria, is all the better for it. Sweeney, who somehow avoided a scream queen role for so long, plays dress-up as a virginal young nun. Her...

Her...

In director Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, evil lies not in the efforts of Satan and his demons but solely within the hearts of the men running a convent in the Italian countryside and, to a lesser degree, the women who answer directly to them. In the opening scene, we witness a terrified young nun (Simona Tabasco) desperately trying to escape the convent, only to be hunted down and restrained by a creepy quartet of red-masked nuns. From this point on, it’s abundantly clear that something is off at Our Lady of Sorrows, even if it takes a young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who’s freshly arrived at the convent, quite a while to figure out that serious trouble is brewing in this little corner of paradise.
While Cecilia arrives in Italy as a doe-eyed innocent, even she’s all too aware of the Catholic Church’s recent scandals,...

Lisa Gray, a budding art restorer who travels to the small Italian village of Sambuci just outside Rome to bring a medieval painting back to its former glory for a wealthy and titled client. Little does she know she is placing her life in danger from an evil curse and a monster born of myth and brutal pain.
I have been a fan of Federico Zampaglione’s genre work since I saw his film Shadow in 2009. Then came the original cut of Tulpa back at Frighfest 2012. It’s safe to say I was one of the Only people who reviewed that screening and that cut positively (and then went on to review the recut just as glowingly) and saw what Zampaglione was trying to achieve.

A horror movie set in an Italian convent with a title like Immaculate communicates all there is to know about the plot. A young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), travels to her new post in the remote countryside, only to discover she’s miraculously pregnant soon after taking her vows. Director Michael Mohan and screenwriter Andrew Lobel pack in the Italian horror influences, with Suspiria largely presiding over this religious horror entry and blasphemous imagery in spades. But the film’s breakneck plotting, inert jump scare overreliance, and familiar tropes undermine a fierce performance by its lead.
Despite the stunning, labyrinthine, and ornate halls of the sprawling convent, the cast of characters in Immaculate is rather small. The sweet fish-out-of-water Sister Cecilia instantly bonds with Father Sal (Álvaro Morte) and the feisty Sister Gwen (Benedetta Porcaroli) yet draws angry stares from Sister Mary (Simona Tabasco). Toss in a few eccentric or stern Church elders,...

Elegant tutus and pink tights. Perfectly taut buns and laced pointe shoes. Beautiful princesses in search of the love of a prince and dying of broken hearts. Grace and poise. This is the world of ballet as most people know it. But ballet has also been used as a critical element in a few select horror films over the years, such as Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Jordan Peele’s Us, and even Radio Silence’s upcoming vampire thriller Abigail. This raises the question: what is there to fear about dances of Sugar Plum Fairies and Little Swans. And nowhere is the world of ballet explored with a deeper or more horrific lens than in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan...

The first time I interviewed Valgur it was in their Mexico City living room, surrounded by piles of broken synthesizers. It was 2019 and the band’s debut album Zapandú was gaining underground buzz for its unusual collage of electronic sounds and esoteric motifs, which included eerie vampire aesthetics and dreamy Zapotec poetry. But underneath their otherworldly creations, universally human questions of religion, family, and indigenous identity have always reigned supreme.

Challengers, the Luca Guadagnino-directed, Zendaya-starring drama about a trio of tennis players enmeshed in a love triangle, is back with a new trailer and release date after the film was postponed last year due to the Hollywood strikes.
The latest preview doesn’t stray that far from the one that dropped back in June 2023, serving more of a reminder that, yes, Challengers is coming out. The movie follows former tennis star Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) — whose career is cut short by a leg injury — alongside her pro husband Art...
