Ray Chan, the art director and production designer for Marvel Studios who contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy, three Avengers movies, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine and more, has died. He was 56.
Chan died Tuesday near his home in Wales, his family announced. No cause of death was divulged.
“Ray truly was one of the best, in so many ways,” they said. “He had an exuberance for life, which was tragically cut short and will be sorely missed. He loved his career and lived a rich and wonderful life, and his memory will live on through all those he knew and the films he helped make happen.”
Chan served as supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016) and the Avengers films Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

Before Ryan Reynolds sliced his way into box office lore with Deadpool’s razor-sharp wit, another beloved actor was only a claw’s length away from making R-rated comic book history. Yes, Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold intended to immortalize The Wolverine as the first mature audience-oriented spectacle in the X-Men universe.
Consider this: it is 2013, and the cinematic world is enthralled by PG-13, effects-laden marvels like The Avengers, whose paint is still drying on its vibrant canvas.
Even though Fox steered the ship towards safer waters, could anyone have predicted how Mangold’s unrealized vision would paradoxically give The Wolverine a cutting edge that allowed it to cut through the din of its competitors?

Tom Cruise, a name that alone evokes images of Hollywood glamor, charisma, blockbuster films, and piercing looks. The Mission Impossible actor is a bonafide star with acting chops to support his stardom, but his pretty face is what makes him immensely attractive. His female fans would often move to the edge of their seats as they get lost in his looks, and it would be a lie if you say, you do not adore his signature grin.

However, despite being the face of Hollywood for so many years and having so many great qualities, it turns out the actor is practically undatable. As rumor breaks out following the news of his possible breakup with Elsina Khayrova, how he has set a list of absurd conditions that will make anyone nuts.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

The Tourist Stars Johnny Depp & Angelina Jolie ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; Facebook )
The Tourist brought together an interesting pair of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie together. The romantic thriller was released in 2010 and received mixed response from the critics. However, the film earned at least 278 million dollars at the worldwide box office and received three Golden Globe nominations. The Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck directorial is a remake of the 2005 French film, Anthony Zimmer.
In the film, Angelina Jolie plays Elise Clifton-Ward, who helps her lover, Alexander Pearce, escape from the French and Scottish officers. The duo come up with a clever way to trick these officers who are following Elise to find Alexander’s whereabouts. Both Johnny and Angelina look stunning together on screen. But did you know Depp and Jolie weren’t the first choice for the film? Yes, you read it right.

A recent study on the Hollywood industry proved that the percentage of women representation in the top box office earners has been decreasing. The study claimed that female roles have decreased considerably in 2023 when compared to 2022 and it is quite a notable figure. Although there have been no major reasons stated, the industry will surely work on the deficit of female representation.
Along with the deficit of female representation in the industry, Hollywood has also suffered a major blow in its box office collection over the years. 2022 saw a total of over $10 billion in overall revenue but 2023 could only collect a bit over $8 billion, with their difference being almost $2 billion. Now it is a major blunder as it potentially points towards a lack of content from Hollywood.

Emotions and politics fly fast and hard in Siddharth Anand's mega-budget Hindi-language “Fighter”, a new attempt at making the next big cinematic universe after his stints in Yash Raj Films' Spy Universe, “War” and “Pathaan”. While “Pathaan” heralded the return of Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan, “War” saw him refine his partnership with the similarly beloved Hrithik Roshan, giving him another super-hunk super-spy role after “Bang Bang!”, a remake of the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz action rom-com “Knight & Day”. The shadow of Tom Cruise looms over Anand's work with increasing prominence nowadays; “Pathaan” recruited “Top Gun: Maverick”‘s stunt coordinator Casey O'Neill as its second unit and action director, and now, Anand's very own production company Marflix Pictures utilises Roshan's lucrative leading man status into India's very own “Top Gun” (complete with a villain modelled off Cruise's hair and outfit in “Mission: Impossible II”). Gal Gadot isn't a stranger to big franchises. She made her feature debut with "Fast & Furious," joining the property by playing a fan-favorite character who got one of the series' best death scenes — sort of. She also delivered the single best line in the entire Kenneth Branagh Hercule Poirot franchise with her role in "Death on the Nile" (even if the movie wasn't a big hit), and starred in the underrated action comedy "Knight and Day," which features a fantastic Tom Cruise performance.
It was Gadot's role in the DC Universe, mostly in the first "Wonder Woman," that made her a star (a role she got after reading scenes from a Tarantino movie during her audition). "Wonder Woman" also offered a glimpse at a bright future for the DC Universe that has yet to materialize -- and even if it does, it will do so without Gadot's Diana of Themyscira.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Hard to believe, but we’ve not taken a trip into “rom-com” land in 2023. Really? Has this staple been dormant for several months, but with those warmer Spring temps, well, where do most hearts venture? Oh, and since we’re getting nearer to Summer this one’s a hybrid as it’s really a “rom-com-spy-thriller”.This isn’t rare as we’ve seen this played out for at least 30 years, going back to Arnold and new Oscar darling Jamie Lee in True Lies (which inspired a recent CBS TV series). And in the last dozen or so years we’ve had the big “spy reveals” in Knight And Day (Tom Cruise) and Killer (Ashton Kutcher), not to mention the double reveal in Mr. And Mrs. Smith (Bradgilina begins). Well, this new one has a bit of a twist in that the undercover agent is a lady. Plus it also takes...

What does the Indiana Jones franchise have to do with Star Wars? Well, from a pure story point of view, absolutely nothing, unless those crystal skulls were sent from Coruscant. But from a business point of view, they are both Lucasfilm properties, so if the ExCel Center in London is already packed full of movie-loving dorks and their lightsabers at Star Wars Celebration, maybe throw a bone to the few who brought an Indy whip, too.
To that end, the first full trailer of James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is here, on the internet, after making its debut at the London pep rally. This is the fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, the first not directed by Steven Spielberg. Filmmaker Siddharth Anand is the toast of India. His “Pathaan” is currently the biggest Indian hit film of the year.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the Yash Raj Films spy action thriller ended a box office drought for the Hindi-language Bollywood industry, which had a lean 2022, and marked a comeback for Khan, not seen as a leading man since 2018’s “Zero.”
“There was a lot of curiosity to see Shah Rukh Khan back after his hiatus – he took a break from media, from appearances, he just became inaccessible to the world, there suddenly was a thirst that he created for him – today, audiences are used to stars being out there in social media and events and everywhere,” Anand told Variety.
“He created that enigmatic quality, that mystery around him, which a star should have and then did a film that is in a very popular genre.

Tom Cruise has had a fascinating career full of highs and lows. Arguably the biggest movie star working today, Cruise has collaborated with some of the biggest auteurs in Hollywood and always finds new ways to put his life on the line for our entertainment. And yet, Cruise has also made more than his fair share of odd films and played his fair share of weird characters. Do we even get Tom Cruise in "Top Gun: Maverick" without Tom Cruise in "The Mummy" or Tom Cruise in "Rock of Ages," stumbling and finding himself with something to prove? While movies like "Tropic Thunder" are usually the first to come to mind when discussing Tom Cruise's weirder and more comedic roles, there is another movie from those years that isn't talked about that often, but very much deserves the spotlight: 2010's "Knight and Day."

By the time Paul Dano made his directorial debut on the 2018 film “Wildlife,” he had already worked with legendary filmmakers such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Bong Joon Ho, and Steve McQueen. But when reflecting on the acting experiences that shaped his directing style, one movie comes to mind for him: “Knight and Day.”
Dano starred alongside Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in James Mangold’s 2010 action comedy about a runaway spy who befriends a classic car restorer while on the lam. And in a new interview with GQ, he explained that watching Cruise’s meticulous approach to doing stunts for that film was an educational experience for him. Cruise’s ability to consider how every aspect of the production would be affected by his work shaped the way that Dano approached directing “Wildlife.”

Exclusive: Operation: Kickboxer — a new series based on the Kickboxer action films — is in the works from executive producers Todd Garner (Mortal Kombat) and Dimitri Logothetis (Jiu Jitsu).
Gary Scott Thompson (The Fast and the Furious) will serve as showrunner, with Gary Marenzi’s Marenzi & Associates overseeing global co-production and distribution duties. The show will be financed by Indo Pacific Rim President Gary Wood, who financed the last three films from Logothetis’ company and served as exec producer.
Kickboxer is a seven-film martial arts franchise, three installments of which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. The 1989 original directed by Mark Disalle and David Worth introduced viewers to Kurt Sloane (Van Damme), who must learn the ancient kickboxing art of Muay Thai in order to avenge his brother. Before Cameron Diaz was “Back in Action,” the actress got her start transporting drugs across international borders. And no, this is not the plot of her next action film.
Diaz revealed during the “Second Life” podcast (via Yahoo! Entertainment) that she “didn’t work a day” as a model in Paris but, rather, found an alternative profession.
“I was there a full year, and I didn’t work one day. I couldn’t book a job to save my life,” Diaz explained. “I got like one job, but really I think I was like a mule carrying drugs to Morocco — I swear to God.”
The “Knight and Day” and “Charlie’s Angels” action star continued, “It was before Tsa or anything like that. It was like early ’90s. They gave me a suitcase that was locked that had my ‘costumes’ in it — quote, unquote.”

Cameron Diaz is stepping back into the world of acting.
The onetime Charlies Angels star, who stepped back from Hollywood in 2014, will star in the forthcoming action-comedy Back in Action.
Talk about an appropriate title, huh?
The flick is in the works at Netflix, and it will reunite her with her Any Given Sunday and Annie co-star, Jamie Foxx.
Foxx broke the news of Cameron's big return, sharing a conversation between the pair in which Diaz struggled to find the right words to reveal her comeback.
"I don’t know how to do this, you know?” she says in the clip, featuring someone who retired from a profession only to take on another job.
Yes, we're talking about Tom Brady, you guys!
“I was talking to Jamie, and he said you needed a few tips on how to un-retire,” Brady says, adding, “I’m relatively successful at un-retiring.”

No two ways about it: April’s a great month for the Criterion Channel, which (among other things; more in a second) adds two recent favorites. We’re thrilled at the SVOD premiere of Hamaguchi’s entrancing Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, our #3 of 2021, and Bruno Dumont’s lacerating France, featuring Léa Seydoux’s finest performance yet.
Ethan Hawke’s Adventures in Moviegoing runs the gamut from Eagle Pennell’s Last Night at the Alamo to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while a 14-film John Ford retro (mostly) skips westerns altogether. Six years before his death in 1996, “Rent” composer Jonathan Larson began performing a solo semi-autobiographical musical “Tick, Tick…Boom!” about a young struggling composer named Jon who fears that he has made the wrong career choice. After his death, Larson’s show was expanded into a three-person piece by David Auburn that ran in London, off-Broadway, and as a national tour. Now it is an acclaimed new Netflix movie directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who appeared in a Encores production of the musical in 2014) and starring Andrew Garfield.
The composer bio movie genre has long been a favorite of Hollywood, especially during its Golden Age. But these bio-pics played fast and loose with the facts. The Production Code prevented these films from exploring the fact that Cole Porter and Lorenz Hart were gay. And some of these composers and/or their families were still alive and wanted a certain image presented on the big screen.

From the late 1940s — and taking in “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” “El Cid,” “A Fistful of Dollars” and “Doctor Zhivago” — Spain has welcomed some of the biggest movies and series in history.
As it battles to become one of Europe’s foremost production hubs, its service sector has grown with the Mediapro Studio and Secuoya Studios recently launching international shoot service divisions. Following, profiles of five of Spain’s top service players.
Babieka
For over 50 years, Babieka has helped handle big budget international shoots in Spain. Ridley Scott’s “Exodus,” Terry George’s “The Promise” and Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section” figure amongst its recent titles. Babieka also produces (Netflix film “The Paramedic”) and co-produces. “Top international productions are in our DNA. These prove an amazing training ground for our cast and crew that we benefit from in our own productions,” says CEO Denis Pedregosa.

Exclusive: Warner Bros has landed What’s Going On, a biopic of iconic soul singer Marvin Gaye that Allen Hughes will direct, and produce with Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Andrew Lazar. The studio acquired a script by poet-playwright Marcus Gardley (he wrote the musical The Color Purple for WB) and the singer’s estate and Motown are part of the deal so there will be rights to use all of Gaye’s signature songs. This finally will bring to the screen the singer’s story, after many previous attempts by different filmmakers stalled or fell short of the rights needed.
“This is so personal for me,” Hughes told Deadline. “When I made my first film with my brother, we were fortunate to get “What’s Going On” into the trailer for Menace 2 Society, and it was a game changer in elevating the marketing of that film. Every film of...

Despite being active since 2013, Michihito Fujii has only managed to become more widely known in 2019, when two of his movies, “Night and Day” and “The Journalist” garnered much attention, both in Japan and internationally. “A Family” follows in the same footsteps of the two, both stylistically and contextually, with the second aspect focusing on an effort to present themes that are usually depicted in genre fashion, with realism. This time he deals with the world of yakuza, and particularly the concept of family within these organizations, which, supposedly, is one of the main values of the underworld.
“A Family” is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival
The story coves two decades in the life of Kenji Yamamoto, starting in 1999, when he has just lost his yakuza father, becoming an orphan, something that has turned him into an insolent punk, who seems to fear and respect of nothing, and is always...
