Beer?

I thought Mayberry was in a dry county. When Andy offered Howard a beer at the lodge meeting, that took me aback.

I can't understand Howard's mother being so manipulative and so obsessed with her son. It's time for Howard to cut those apron strings!

I will agree that this show just wasn't the same after Barney Fife was gone. (Even though that character was so obnoxious and annoying.) But there are so many good actors in this show, that portray their characters to their best. Even at its 'lesser' quality, this is still one of the best shows to watch with family

Ugly Manipulative Woman

Howard is a shy, pleasant fellow. He's good at his job and while a bit boring has more going for him than many townspeople. Floyd, for instance, is a busybody and a gossip. So when the lodge becomes available, it would be a great move out of his comfort zone to be "one of the guys." His mother is one of the most offensive characters I've seen on this show. She is totally mean spirited, enough to start a lie about Howard.

Classic Mabel Albertson

Straight man Howard Sprague (Jack Dodson) & Mabel Albertson make up a unique comedy team. HS is dry, and doesn't create a lot of humor. But, he can be funny if put in the right situation. Having a overbearing puppet master mother is needed to perk things up. And Mabel Albertson take the ball and run with it. Both her TAGS appearances so far have been brilliant. My favorite scene here is when she slams the big book in disgust of Andy prodding Howard to join the lodge. Mayberry has the squarest lodge. Root beer, suits and ties, and imbecile Goober as keeper of the door. Funny to hear Andy call Jud (Burt Mustin) by his real first name. A 10* episode with Mabel Albertson. 3* without her.

PATHETIC MOTHER!

Howard's mom is pathetic! She is the most manipulative mother ever! Her extreme need to control Howard clearly shows she needs serious help. I don't care for this character at all. Some of the other characters in this show can be irritating at times, but this one is irritating every time!
