The title song is "To ostatnia niedziela" written in 1935 by Jerzy Petersburski with Polish lyrics by Zenon Fredwald. In 1936 the first Russian version was recorded by Klavdiya Shulzhenko. That same year, Aleksandr Tsfasman recorded his version with new Russian lyrics by Iosif Albeck who wrote the opening line: "Utomlyonnoe solntse... " Burnt by the Sun is a loose English translation of the song title, alluding to Soviet dictatorship hoisting Stalin to the sun.

The main hero, Kotov, was sentenced to death in the end of the prequel, Burnt by the Sun (1994), but he escapes from death and is fighting in the front-lines in WWII. His adversary, Mitya, had a failed suicide attempt by cutting his veins in the end of the prequel, but he survived.
Nikita Mikhalkov announced this film, Utomlyonnye solntsem 2 (2010), as early as in 1994, when
he received awards for the first episode, Burnt by the Sun (1994) and spoke about the sequel.
Portrayal of Stalin's evil personality caused attacks by hard line Stalinist groups against the film and its director Nikita Mikhalkov.
