- Mel Tennant: [Eddie's riding Big Spender] How about a trot?
- Eddie Burton: [nervous] No, I don't think he wants to.
- Eddie Burton: [Jake sold Big Spender, the next day someone is picking him up] You don't waste any time do you?
- Jake Cotter: I'm sorry.
- Eddie Burton: [bitter smile] Hey, I don't own Big Spender.
- Jake Cotter: No, but he's still your horse.
- Eddie Burton: He's my friend. He's my best friend.
- Eddie Burton: Working with animals... they're dependant on you, like children. You have to clean them, feed them. Taking care of them, it made me feel like something, like someone. Until now I don't think I ever did.
- Mel Tennant: Maybe there's something at the track. I'll ask around.
- Eddie Burton: Thanks. I'm glad you're on Big Spender.
- Mel Tennant: Someone gives you a second chance to prove yourself, you take it.
- Mel Tennant: [to Eddie] Hey, you're back. Big Spender really missed you.
- Jake Cotter: Good, now you can muck out his stalls when you work with him.
- Will Burton: Are you coming home soon?
- Eddie Burton: They like me so much they want me to stay a bit longer.
- Jake Cotter: He doesn't know he's scaring you, he just knows you're scaring him. Don't let him know you're afraid.
- Jake Cotter: How do I do that?
- Jake Cotter: Sing to him?
- Eddie Burton: Sing?
- Mel Tennant: He didn't win in the money so they sent him out to pasture.
- Eddie Burton: Story of my life.
- Mel Tennant: [after she lost on Big Spender] This was my fault I rode him badly...
- Steve Caldwell: [interrupts] You can't keep making excuses for him.
- Grandma: [to Will] Tell daddy good-bye. Kiss him.
- Eddie Burton: He doesn't have to if he doesn't want to.
- Grandma: Yes, he does.
- Eddie Burton: [tp Big Spender] Look, I'm trying to help you here.
- [the horse doesn't eat]
- Eddie Burton: You wanna die? Fine.
- [Eddie sits down]
- Eddie Burton: I know life sucks, but you can't give up. Even when it looks like its not going to get any better.
- Eddie Burton: Are you really a jockey?
- Mel Tennant: Yeah.
- Eddie Burton: You don't look like a jockey.
- Mel Tennant: Yeah, well you don't look like a convict.
- Jake Cotter: [about a job for Eddie] It doesn't pay very much to start with.
- Eddie Burton: I can't exactly be choosey. The jobs I know how to do that pay well aren't exactly legal.
