Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Lex Luthor is one of the most celebrated villains of all time. Superman’s arch-nemesis is a genius, billionaire, and one of the most power-hungry characters in the comic-book world. The legendary character was portrayed to perfection by actor Clancy Brown in the Tim Daly starring animated show Superman: The Animated Series.
Bruce Timm’s follow-up to his Batman: The Animated Series was a Superman for a new generation as it became an influential piece of media for many other adaptations. It saw a much more vulnerable Superman, who did not smile or perpetually be optimistic like he was in the comics. However, Superman would have been completely different as Brown reportedly first auditioned for the role of Clark Kent in the show.

Is this the Krusty Krab? No, this is the sound of a brand new "SpongeBob SquarePants" being announced. Paramount and Nickelodeon (like every other studio) are in the business of milking their popular franchises for all the nostalgia they're worth, and there is arguably no bigger Nickelodeon character than SpongeBob SquarePants.
Since the moment it premiered back in 1999, the animated comedy series created by Stephen Hillenburg has been the biggest show in the network's history. In fact, the character recently inspired a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, almost 30 years and 300 episodes later, there's as big a chance of "SpongeBob" going away and stopping as there is a chance the titular sponge stops working at the Krusty Krab.
There have been three "SpongeBob" movies, with the original "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" serving as a sort of series finale according to Hillenburg. Following his departure from the show, two new films were released,...

Annie and César-winning and Oscar nominated animation specialist filmmaker Mark Osborne delivered an inspirational masterclass to a rapt crowd of animators and students at the International Film Festival of India, Goa on Tuesday.
Osborne began with a presentation on the process behind the 2015 film “The Little Prince,” based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved 1943 novella, and then shared his views on how budding animators could approach their craft.
“Figure out what’s important to you, find out what’s meaningful to you and try to tap into it, because if it’s meaningful to you, and it’s honest, it’s going to be meaningful to an audience, you’re going to find your audience. And if you’re going to be honest, and not just tell a story that’s copying another story or trying to do something like someone else, it’s that honesty that creates fresh takes on things and fresh approaches,...

A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. Patrick Star is about to become the star of his own show.
A “SpongeBob Squarepants” spinoff series centered around SpongeBob’s pink friend is in the works at Nickelodeon, Variety has confirmed with sources. “The Patrick Star Show” will see Bill Fagerbakke continue to voice the character.
The series will be a deep dive on Patrick and his family, as the friendly starfish hosts a talk show. Precisely which other “SpongeBob” actors will be reprising their characters for this new series is unclear, however, sources say it will introduce several new characters voiced by new actors to the “SpongeBob” underwater universe.
A representative for Nickelodeon declined to comment.
This marks the second “SpongeBob” spinoff to float its way to Nickelodeon, following in the spongesteps of “Kamp Koral,” a CG-animated prequel series which was greenlit over a year ago. That series, which is set to premiere on CBS All Access next year,...

“The Patrick Star Show,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” animated spinoff starring SpongeBob’s best friend, Patrick, is in the works at Nickelodeon.
On the new series, the pink starfish will continued to be voiced by the character’s longtime “SpongeBob” voice actor Bill Fagerbakke, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
Reps for Nickelodeon declined to comment Monday.
The project is not the only upcoming “SpongeBob” offshoot series, joining the previously announced prequel “Kamp Koral.” That show — which recently moved from Nickelodeon to CBS All Access, where it will debut next year as part of the rebranded service — will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

Three months after HBO Max launched with the full set of eight core “Harry Potter” movies, the octet of titles about the Boy Who Lived will be rolling off the WarnerMedia service in August.
Fans of Harry Potter’s Wizarding World have a little over five weeks left to binge on the eight films based on J.K. Rowling’s novels on HBO Max, with the titles expiring on Aug. 25, WarnerMedia announced Monday.
Rowling has recently become embroiled in a firestorm of criticism over her comments regarding transgender identity. A source familiar with the status of the Harry Potter films on HBO Max told Variety that the removal of the movies from streaming service stems from standard licensing terms that are unrelated to the controversy.
At the same time, HBO Max in August also will be adding films including the slate of DC’s Batman movies — including the 1989 “Batman,” “Batman & Robin,...

Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 classic, is the latest summer movie to vacate its release date as theaters remain closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The anticipated follow-up was scheduled to debut June 24 and will now release Dec. 23, 2020.
As part of the release shake-up, Paramount has also moved “A Quiet Place Part II” — which the studio postponed last month — to Sept. 4, 2020. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” an animated adventure based on the absorbent underwater fry cook, was originally slated to hit theaters on May 22 and will now bow July 31, 2020. Meanwhile sci-fi fantasy film “The Tomorrow War,” previously scheduled for Dec. 25, 2020, is now undated.
Those films join a growing list of tentpoles that were pulled from release because of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closure of multiplexes. Sony recently delayed most of its summer slate, including “Morbius” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Paramount gave an early look at its “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” tv spot that will debut ahead of the Super Bowl. Since even pre-game commercials are expensive, the new clip gives SpongeBob just 26 seconds to describe everything that happens in his new film.

In the animated movie, out in theaters May 22, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star venture out of Bikini Bottom and head to the Lost City of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to save SpongeBob’s trustee snail Gary.

Nickelodeon’s hit “SpongeBob Square-Pants” moved out of its own adolescence earlier this year when the animated series turned 20 in May. But the celebration of the modern classic about under-the-sea adventures is continuing well into next year as a “love letter” to the show’s creator, says Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon executive vice president of animation production and development.
“Time flies,” says Naito. “I remember meeting Stephen Hillenburg in 1998 when we were both getting coffee at a coffee machine when he was just starting.”
Hillenburg, who was a marine biology teacher before stepping into the world of animation, created “SpongeBob” based on some of his own experience seeing children’s awe at sponges and starfish. The series became Nickelodeon’s first original Saturday morning cartoon, debuting in May 1999. Hillenburg unfortunately passed away from complications from Als in November 2018 at age 57, before getting to see his beloved series hit this milestone — festivities...

The accompanying panel will include Nickelodeon and SpongeBob vets including co-executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, producer Jennie Monica and writer Kaz Prapuolenis.
The special is a mix of traditional 2D animated and live action scenes, on a par with 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” and even features a cameo from one of the film’s live action superstars.

The underwater exploits of SpongeBob’s summer camp childhood exploits will be the focus of a new Nickelodeon prequel series.
SpongeBob SquarePants has plenty of projects – a year-long birthday bash, a special featuring the voice cast in live-action form, another movie and even prospective spinoff shows – on his franchise backlog during the porous Pollyannaish pineapple-dweller’s 20th anniversary. However, Nickelodeon has another entry to offer, a prequel series set to focus on a 10-year-old version of the character during a stay at summer sleepaway camp.
Tentatively titled Kamp Koral, Nickelodeon has officially greenlit the young-Sponge-Bob prequel series for a 13-episode run, reports Deadline. Unlike the mothership show, the prequel will manifest as a CGI-concocted series, though will remain 2D. According to the description, the prequel will focus on SpongeBob’s stay at “the craziest camp in the kelp forest,” Kamp Koral, where he’ll spend the summer “building underwater campfires,...

Nickelodeon has ordered a prequel series to its longrunning cartoon, “SpongeBob SquarePants” that will follow a young Spongebob during sleepaway camp.
The series, titled “Kamp Koral” will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. “SpongeBob SquarePants” Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller will co-executive produce the prequel.
Oh, and it won’t be a 2-dimensional cartoon like the flagship “SpongeBob,” but instead computer-generated animation. This won’t be the first time “SpongeBob” gets the 3-D treatment. The 2015 movie “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” was also CG-animated.

Exclusive: Nickelodeon has given a 13-episode series order to Kamp Koral (working title), a spinoff of the network’s signature series SpongeBob SquarePants. While the mothership is a classic 2D cartoon, the offshoot will be a CG-animated series, which serves as a prequel to SpongeBob. It introduces 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp.
Earlier this year, Nickelodeon, under new president Brian Robbins, announced it is developing for the first time ever spinoff projects for SpongeBob SquarePants characters. Kamp Koral marks the first such project to get a green light. It is slated to begin production in June at Nickelodeon’s facilities in Burbank.

Holy crap! Has SpongeBob Squarepants really been around for 20 years!? That’s just crazy to me, it seems just like yesterday when it first premiered!
To celebrate, Nickelodeon will have an hour-long 20th anniversary special called “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout.” It will be a live-action and animated special that will feature Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) playing live-action versions of their animated characters. The special also features guest stars David Hasselhoff, Kel Mitchell (All That), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans) and Daniella Perkins (Knight Squad).
That sounds like a lot of fun and today we have our first look at the special thanks to a couple of photos that have been released. Hasselhoff had this to say in a statement:

As part of SpongeBob's 20th birthday celebration, fans will meet the live-action version of the show's iconic characters.
From the show’s inception, SpongeBob SquarePants has been a beloved and highly-rated children’s animated program. It’s longevity–it turns 20 this year–only proves how much of a cultural force the characters of SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and the rest of the creatures in Bikini Bottom are. Some, in fact, may be getting their own spinoffs.
For the first time, as part of Nickelodeon's year-long celebration of SpongeBob, the voices behind the iconic characters will show their real faces on the long-running program. Nickelodeon unveiled a first look of a new hour-long special titled “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” which includes live-action scenes where the voice cast plays the human counterparts of their animated characters.
The network released first look photos of the gang.

Nickelodeon is bringing you more stories from under the sea. The children’s cable network is planning its first-ever series of spinoffs from the long-running, popular animated program “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
Possible ideas for the breakout installments include standalone stories for side characters like Sandy Cheeks and Plankton. No further details are available at this time, including a projected date for when the spinoffs would hit the small screen.
Created by the late animator and marine biology teacher, Stephen Hillenburg, “SpongeBob” premiered on Nickelodeon in July 1999. The cartoon’s massive popularity has led to two feature films, 2004’s “The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie” and its 2015 sequel, as well as a Broadway musical.

As a novella featuring adult themes like loneliness, despair, friendship, love, and loss, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s seminal book, “The Little Prince” — the most-read and most-translated book in the French language — is likely something you read when you were younger, though it’s not quite a children’s book. While Stanley Donen made a 1974 live-action family fantasy musical, that version is far from an all-time classic. But Paramount Pictures France, and Paramount Vantage in the U.S., hope to change the story's reputation in cinema with their new animated version. Directed by Mark Osborne ("Kung Fu Panda," "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"), this new iteration of the classic tale, about a little precocious girl who discovers the story of “The Little Prince,” a tale about pilot who crashes in the desert and meets a little boy from a distant planet, looks squarely aimed at kids and families (forget those notions of introspection and French.

We can't wait for Netflix's November 20th debut of "Marvel's Jessica Jones" starring Krysten Ritter as a superhero who becomes a private detective. The noirish series, which received a great reception at New York Comic Con, costars Carrie-Anne Moss and former Dr. Who David Tennant.
Other Netflix originals premiering in November: "River," starring Stellan Skarsgård as a detective haunted by visions of his murdered colleague; the Aziz Ansari comedy series "Master of None;" and "W/Bob and David," which re-teams Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.
As for movies, you might have missed Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" (2012), which first paired "Ex Machina's" Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson. Also new, Nicolas Cage's "The Runner" and documentaries "Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad and Me," "Call Me Lucky" and "Do I Sound Gay?"
Here's the entire list of what's new on Netflix in November.

The first teaser trailer for Jon Favreau and Disney's live-action Jungle Book remake arrived yesterday and swiftly blew everyone away.
Who thought, after Cinderella and Maleficent, another film inspired by an animated classic could look this good? The voice cast supporting newcomer Neel Sethi as Mowgli, probably. We haven't seen Lupita Nyong'o or Giancarlo Esposito's wolves Raksha and Akela yet, but check out who was revealed in the first trailer below:
Character: Baloo
Actor: Bill Murray
Rudyard Kipling, who wrote the original novels the film is based on, called Baloo "the sleepy brown bear". You can see why they cast comedy giant Bill Murray, then, a man whose ability to be very funny and very laid back has made him a household name. Top tip: you're probably best off not mentioning his Garfield movies next time you see him. Sure, he played a similarly chilled-out animal - only instead...

In the run-up to Back to the Future's 30th anniversary on July 3, Digital Spy presents a week of special features celebrating the time-travel classic.
Great Scott! Has it really been 30 years? Back to the Future celebrates a landmark anniversary this week, so to mark the occasion we take a look back at the film to find out what the cast were doing then and where they are now.
We get all misty-eyed and nostalgic about Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and their Bttf cast-mates below!
Michael J Fox
A huge teen idol thanks to his role in sitcom Family Ties, Fox initially wasn't able to play Marty McFly due to a scheduling conflict with his TV show. The part of Marty went to Eric Stoltz, he was fired five weeks into filming, then Fox jumped on board as a last-minute replacement. The schedule was gruelling (10am-6pm on Family Ties,...

You will see few less sane blockbuster movies than SpongeBob Squarepants' sequel...
Back in 2011, lots of people were surprised by Rango, a surreal pastiche of Chinatown through the lens of the Western genre which put Paramount's animation division on the map. Just in case you haven't seen it and we haven't stressed this enough in the last four years, then you really ought to check it out.
For those of us waiting for something as good or better from the studio, its latest effort, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water may leave you wanting. Then again, if you're a fan of the series on which it's based, it's perfectly in keeping with the surrealism we've come to expect.
Counter to what the marketing would have you believe, it's not a CG/live action hybrid, or at least not until the last 20 minutes of the film. The rest is rendered...

Will Smith and Margot Robbie’s romantic caper film Focus easily topped the North American box office this weekend, although with a milder debut than expected. The heist flick opened with an estimated $19.1 million, which is solid for a film about con artists, but pretty tepid for Will Smith’s standards. In the last 10 years, only one film with the Fresh Prince headlining has opened worse: 2008’s Seven Pounds ($14.9 million). Despite an appealing marketing campaign, a lack of competition, IMAX theaters and the presence of co-star Margot Robbie, Focus couldn’t even top the opening for Smith’s much-derided 2013 bomb After Earth ($27.5 million).
The estimated $19.1 million take is equal to the opening for directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s 2011’s romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. It was also around the same mark as adult-oriented thrillers from the first quarter of the year, such as Limitless ($18.9 million) and The Adjustment Bureau ($21.2 million). Still,...

After a record-breaking berth last weekend due to Valentine’s Day and much upfront demand, Fifty Shades of Grey plummeted down to reality, but still finished in first place with an estimated $23.2 million. That is a 73% drop from its opening last weekend, which broke a record for the month of February. With mixed word-of-mouth and the lack of a romance-themed holiday boosting ticket sales, a large drop was expected. However, even when compared to female-skewing adaptations of popular books, it was steep. In comparison, the most a Twilight film fell in its sophomore weekend was 70%, while The Fault in Our Stars fell 69% last June. Valentine’s Day, which opened in the same frame five years ago, dropped 70% in its second weekend.
Even with the treacherous drop-off, Fifty Shades of Grey has earned $130.1 million in its first ten days, and is currently 2015’s biggest earner. (American Sniper is, technically, a 2014 release...

6th Update, Monday Actuals, 3:20 Pm: Paramount’s SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out Of Water came in with $635K less than its weekend estimate reported yesterday of $56M. Still, it’s a great gross for this time of year, especially when there aren’t a lot of kids out of school. Per Rentrak, only 1% of all K-12 and college students were off this Friday. That figure moves to 17% this Friday, and then 15% for the February 20-22 frame.
As reported this morning, Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s Jupiter Ascending dropped ducats and is now filing $18.37M while Universal/Legendary’s Seventh Son is a $100K better with a $7.2M actual. They’re in for a hammering this coming weekend as two R-rated mass-appeal pics hit the sked: Universal’s long-awaited E.L. James bestselling adaptation Fifty Shades Of Grey at an estimated 3,600 theaters and 20th Century Fox’s Kingsman: The Secret Service on...

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water finally unseated Clint Eastwood's runaway hit American Sniper at the weekend box office, while a pair of high-priced fantasies flopped.
Paramount Pictures' SpongeBob Movie earned $56 million in North America, a huge debut for the animated Nickelodeon big-screen transfer, according to estimates Sunday. That finally pushed American Sniper off the top spot after a three-week reign. The Navy Seal drama took in $24.2 million in its fourth week of wide release.
The Wachowskis' lavish science-fiction adventure Jupiter Ascending opened with just $19 million, a meager amount for a $175 million production. Warner Bros. delayed the release of the movie, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, from last summer.
Universal's Seventh Son, a supernatural thriller set in medieval times, debuted with a scant $7.1 million. The film, produced by Legendary Pictures and starring Jeff Bridges, cost nearly $100 million to make.
