Due to a complex series of anthropological mishaps, the Wayans Brothers are a huge deal in Brazil. Around these parts, White Chicks is considered a national treasure by a lot of people, so it stands to reason that Brazilian audiences would continue to accompany the Wayans’ comedic output long after North America had stopped taking them seriously as comedic titans.
This is the only reason why I originally watched Michael Tiddes and Marlon Wayans’ 2013 horror spoof A Haunted House – appropriately known as “Paranormal Inactivity” in South America – despite having abandoned this kind of movie shortly after the excellent Scary Movie 3. However, to my complete and utter amazement, I found myself mostly enjoying this unhinged parody of Found Footage films almost as much as the iconic spoofs that spear-headed the genre during the 2000s. Similar to Airplane!, the Naked Gun film series was famous for its outrageous parody, ridiculous set-ups, and on-screen sight gags.

Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson are leading the cast of the brand new The Naked Gun movie, that’s arriving in 2025. More here.
Filming is getting underway imminently on the long, long in gestation new take on The Naked Gun. It’s been through several iterations this, as we charted here, but Paramount is now pressing ahead, with a summer 2025 release planned.
We already knew that Liam Neeson was taking on the role of Frank Drebin Jr, the son of the character made famous by the late Leslie Nielsen. We also know that Akiva Schaffer, he of the magnificent Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
Now? Well, the headline of the article has taken all the suspense out of this. Still, Pamela Anderson has joined the ensemble, in a thus-far unnamed role. It’s fairly safe to assume she’s taking a female lead role in the movie, going where the...

Pamela Anderson is dressing up for Naked Gun.
The actor has signed on to star opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled remake of Naked Gun, based on the crime spoof comedies that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Akiva Schaffer is directing the comedy, which has a script by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer. The trio were behind the popular and Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The original movie, written and directed by Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker and based on their television series Police Squad! that lasted only six episodes, spoofed the tropes of police shows and films that had ingrained themselves into audience’s minds over the decades. It centered on an inept and clueless detective named Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, who still somehow managed to solve the crime and save the day.

Over ten years since the forgettable Scary Movie 5, we’re now getting Scary Movie 6, which is arriving in 2025. More here.
Infamously taking the original title intended for the first Scream film, the spoof Scary Movie arrived in cinemas all the way back in the summer of 2000, and promptly outgrossed the film that it was basically taking the piss out of. Along with its first sequel, that arrived a year later, it was directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, and the modestly-costed films returned sizeable profits.
Not that they were much cop after the first film. David Zucker took over for Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, in 2003 and 2006 respectively, and both in truth veer on the ‘best forgotten’ side. It took seven more years before we got Scary Movie 5, with Malcolm D Lee this time directing, and the quality of that film seemed to have driven the franchise into the ground for good.

Eleven years have gone by since the release of a new entry in the Scary Movie horror parody series – but the franchise isn’t going to remain dormant for much longer. Deadline reports that the Miramax label at Paramount, which is now operating under new boss Jonathan Glickman, has given the greenlight to a new Scary Movie sequel, with the plan being to get the film into theatres sometime in 2025. If any writers or a director are attached to the project, they weren’t named in this announcement.
Directed by In Living Color creator Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by a bunch of people, the first Scary Movie was released by Dimension Films back in 2000. Scary Movie 2 was released in 2001, and the Wayans remained at the head of the creative team for that one. Chris Pratt is presently a household name with his experience in renowned franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. The role of Peter Quill was a turning point in his career. The MCU character needed him to go through an intense workout and diet routine which was key in elevating him to international stardom.
Chris Pratt in Parks and Recreation
Before associating his name with the big franchises and animation flicks, Chris Pratt was known for playing Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation. Pratt made an insane physical transformation to change himself from an adorable overweight to a charming MCU superhero. Interestingly, the actor’s ex-wife, Anna Faris reacted very weirdly to his transformation.
How did Anna Faris feel about Chris Pratt’s MCU transformation?

Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.

Craig Mazin has a fascinating career trajectory. It's doubtful that someone would consider the writer of "Scary Movie 3," "Scary Movie 4," "Superhero Movie," or the Harland Williams sci-fi film "RocketMan" as one of the greatest voices working in genre entertainment, but that's exactly who he is. Years after his run with spoof and parody films, folks were puzzled when it was announced that HBO was releasing a serious, historical tragedy television miniseries about the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, created and written by Craig Mazin.
"Wait, the 'Scary Movie 3' guy?!" plenty exclaimed. Yes, the very same person who wrote a script that blended elements of "The Ring," "Signs," and "8 Mile" into a single horror parody film was entrusted with telling the story of one of the world's most devastating catastrophes.
The result was "Chernobyl," and the five-part series received 19 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards, winning for Outstanding Limited Series,...

Airplane! director David Zucker recently reiterated a joke he’s told frequently through the years.
“When we do screenings of Airplane! we get the question if we could do Airplane! today,” said Zucker. “The first thing I could think of was, ‘Sure, just without the jokes.’ “
In a video posted this week by Dennis Prager’s Prager U, the director of comedy classics such as The Kentucky Fried Movie, Top Secret! and the Naked Gun films got more specific about the current state of Hollywood.
“My current writing partner Pat Proft and I wrote a parody of James Bond and Mission: Impossible,” related Zucker. “One female executive said, ‘This joke is getting pretty risqué here.’ It was a mild joke about the lead female character. Because she had come up through the police department and through the FBI…she needed a breast reduction to fit into the kevlar vest.”

Filmmaker David Zucker was one of the biggest names in comedy in the 1980s thanks to the success of classic comedies like “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun” franchise, but he no longer believes either film could be made by Hollywood in 2022. Well they could, “just without the jokes.” In a new interview (via Mediaite), Zucker said Hollywood is “destroying comedy” by being overly sensitive.
“We could be as offensive as we liked,” Zucker said about his directing career, which also included helming “Scary Movie 3” and “Scary Movie 4.” “We went where the laughs were. We never thought that we were offending anyone, but if we were offending people we knew we were on the right track. As time went on, it got to be the ’90s and the 2000s and it did change… We never worried about any of this stuff with the ‘Naked Gun’ or ‘Scary Movie’ films.

When you look at the world of big screen parodies, there's truly nothing like what David Zucker and company were doing back in their heyday. I grew up in the era where Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer were in the business of pumping out absolute dreck year after year, confusing half-baked references as comedy. I'd gotten my first real taste with "Scary Movie 3," which still holds a special place in my heart, but once I'd become acquainted with Zucker's previous work, I knew what I had been missing out on all this time.
The humor in "Airplane!" involves very specific references, but the key to its longevity was taking an absurd series of events, and taking them very seriously. With that comes the comedy emergence of "Forbidden Planet" actor Leslie Nielsen, who had primarily played more dramatic characters prior to this role. It's no wonder his comedy career soared...

The film written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum centers on Frida (Ackie), a young and clever Los Angeles cocktail waitress who has her eyes set on the prize: philanthropist and tech mogul Slater King (Tatum). When she skillfully maneuvers her way into King’s inner circle and ultimately an intimate gathering on his private island, she is ready for a journey of a lifetime. Despite the epic setting, beautiful people, ever-flowing champagne and late-night dance parties, Frida can sense that there’s more to this island than meets the eye. Something she can’t quite put her finger on. Something terrifying. Rex will play Slater’s chef, trainer and oldest friend, Cody.

“Best Oral three years in a row,” Mikey Saber brags yet again to a disinterested stranger. As if the thirtysomething, out-of-work porn star’s unprompted self-aggrandizement isn’t tasteless enough, consider that his trophies are for receiving the oral and he thinks they’re well-deserved. It would be easier for the people of Texas City to shoo him away if he wasn’t brandishing the most disarming puppy dog demeanor a person could possess. But that’s what makes Mikey such a rich, complicated character: he’s a livewire of charm and disgrace, a manipulator that’s mastered the art of falling upward, an unforgettable installment in the canon of cinematic grifters. Like most of them, he’s utterly unconscionable. Simon Rex, on the other hand, is quite the opposite.

Like the previous “Real World Homecoming” season (“New York”), they will reflect on how the series transformed their lives and potentially squash old conflicts.
The Los Angeles season of “The Real World” premiered on MTV in summer 1993, originally under the name “The Real World: California,” and was a thematic departure from the show’s “New York” season, which launched the franchise in 1992. It’s icky, it’s uncomfortable, but “Red Rocket” is also daring and funny, resulting in co-writer and director Sean Baker’s best outing as a filmmaker yet. If audiences and award voters can get past the more risqué elements, the A24 feature could have a fighting chance in a still wide-open awards season.
The film’s success begins and ends with actor Simon Rex, who dives headfirst into a career-defining performance. Rex’s story is well known in media, as he got his start appearing in solo scenes in porno movies before becoming a model and MTV DJ. After dipping into TV with stints in “Felicity” and as a scene-stealing white rapper in “Scary Movie 3,” he’s mostly flown under-the-radar in Hollywood. That seems like it’s all about to change.

Marlon Wayans marked this month’s 20th anniversary of “Scary Movie” with a new Variety interview in which he touches upon the”evil” nature of Harvey and Bob Weinstein. The spoof comedy was produced and distributed by Dimension Films, the genre arm of the Weinstein brothers’ Miramax Films, and it was a huge win for the studio after it grossed more than $157 million domestically on a $19 million budget. Marlon Wayans co-wrote the script and starred in the film with his brother, Shawn. The duo’s older brother, Keenon Ivory Wayans, handled directing duties.
The success of “Scary Movie” launched a lucrative franchise for the Weinstein-owned Dimension that included four sequels and nearly $1 billion in grosses at the worldwide box office. All three Wayans brothers would return for the 2001 sequel “Scary Movie 2,” another financial success with $141 million on a $45 million budget, but they were shut out of their own franchise starting with “Scary Movie 3.

It was only a matter of time before the most powerful brothers in Hollywood got into business together. In the late ’90s, “Scary Movie,” a comedy that satirized slasher-killer movies, brought three of the Wayans brothers — Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory — to the doorstep of Dimension Films, the boutique horror studio run by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
According to Marlon, making “Scary Movie” with the Weinsteins for a summer 2000 release was indeed a frightening experience. And not just because he was abruptly fired from making the third movie in the franchise, “Scary Movie 3,” on a holiday.
“[The Weinstein’s are] not the best or the kindest people to be in business with,” Marlon Wayans tells Variety. “They’re very much an evil regime, I guess. They do what they want to do how they do it — and it can be rude and quite disrespectful. We couldn’t come to terms on the deal.

HBO Max launched on May 27th and has been off to a pretty good start with well over 10,000 hours worth of content on the service from day one. If you’re a horror fan, you may be excited to hear that a fairly decent portion of those 10,000 hours include some of the biggest and most popular horror films of all time. So, if you haven’t subscribed yet, now might just be the time to do so.
Do you like Steven Spielberg and massive sharks eating people? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that you can catch the entire Jaws franchise – which spans four films – on HBO Max right away. If you haven’t ever seen them, now’s a great opportunity to take a trip back in time to catch up on what was arguably the very first blockbuster movie series.

Even horror maestro Eli Roth can’t escape the box office pull of a good, old-fashioned video game film adaptation. The filmmaker, best known for directing slashers like “Hostel” and “The Green Inferno,” is now turning his attention to another fan-friendly genre: extremely popular video games. Roth will next direct a big screen adaptation of “Borderlands,” the first-person shooter game that hinges on daring adventure scenarios that take place on the planet Pandora (no relation to “Avatar”). It’s Roth’s latest move beyond horror films, as the filmmaker last directed the unexpectedly family-friendly fantasy film “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” in 2018.
“Borderlands” is one of the world’s most successful video game franchises, with more than 57 million units sold worldwide, including over 22 million units of “Borderlands 2.” The most recent installment, “Borderlands 3,” was released in September 2019, and has already sold nearly 8 million units worldwide and was honored...

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment in Disney’s swashbuckling franchise, became the lowest-earning entry in the series since the original when it was released in 2017, which was perhaps a sign that audiences weren’t as interested in the adventures of Jack Sparrow as they had been for the last decade and a half. However, a box office haul of almost $800m showed that the brand was still capable of turning a profit.
Since Disney now seemingly dominates every corner of popular culture, and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has grossed over $4.5bn at the box office to date, there was little chance that the crew of the Black Pearl would ever really disappear from our screens. In fact, a reboot has been discussed for a while now, which may or may not feature Johnny Depp, but seemed to be in a state...

After “Chernobyl,” Craig Mazin expanded his creative partnerships, which required him to move offices in Old Town Pasadena to accommodate a growing staff. In addition to only being “essentially 13 minutes from my house,” Mazin says he likes that pocket of town because of the older architecture that often includes exposed brick. “It’s funky, and I don’t know how to write in a normal space,” he says. Not only does he work on scripts in the space, but he also tapes the “Scriptnotes” podcast there. “Things don’t really inspire me. I get inspired by ideas or people or puzzles,” he says.

“Venom” and “A Star Is Born” both opened over $40 million, and that’s a first for any October weekend. Only 20 films have opened to that much in October, nine of which were horror films.
Now “Venom” has the top October opening ever at $80 million. (Prior record holder was “Scary Movie 3” in 2003 at $73 million adjusted.) That means February, April, and October 2018 each set new records with Marvel movies. The total weekend gross will come in a little under $175 million, the strongest in at least a decade.
Sony has been the home of “Spider-Man” among Marvel releases, along with “Ghost Rider.” A reasonable comparison is Disney’s “Doctor Strange” in early November 2016 (a normally better date), which opened around $90 million. Of course, $80 million is great any time, particularly outside of summer.
What makes “Venom” more impressive is, unlike many Marvel films, it was poorly reviewed with a truly bad Metacritic score...

Full credit where “It” is due: Currently standing at $266 million through its third weekend, “It” is a stunning success and boosted a domestic box office in serious crisis. A reasonable estimate, if somewhat conservative, is a domestic gross around $325 million.
All this, from a September horror film made for $35 million? That’s a stunning performance. And it’s by far the best-performing Stephen King adaptation. But it’s far from the top horror movie in history.
At $325 million, here’s where “It” will stand in adjusted totals:
Horror films The Exorcist (1973) – $983 million The Sixth Sense (1999) – $512 million House of Wax (1953) – $449 million Psycho (1960) – $379 million Signs (2002) – $345 million It (2017) – $325 million (projected)
“House of Wax” was by far the biggest 3D hit in that technique’s first wave. “The Exorcist” is the ninth biggest-grossing of the post-silent era and a social phenomenon in its time. M. Night Shyamalan’s films both had high-end casts and...

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.
Liam Neeson- Neeson has had a long career, and the early part of it was in dramatic roles. An intense dramatic actor, he apeared in films like The Dead Pool, Dark Man, Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Miserables. His career rebirth came after playing Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars-Episode one: The Phantom Menace. After that, he got more offers for actions parts and recreated himself as an action hero in films like Gangs of NY, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, the A-Team, Unknown, the Grey, Taken 2,...

From Blonde And Blonder and You Stupid Man, through to Edmond: we go through the recent straight-to-dvd films of Denise Richards...
So far in this series of pieces that look at the straight-to-dvd or VOD movies of some of our favourite actors who have fallen on hard times, we’ve only looked at men (to date: Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Travolta). That’s because, mostly, actresses find themselves almost completely out of the game once they hit 30ish – an unnecessary full stop that a lot of us would like to see removed in the future.
Denise Richards, sadly, is no different. After marrying a man she found herself in an abusive relationship with, her career climb stumbled and she was forced back down into TV roles, where she’s currently still putting in the hours.
Richards had a sparkling, American Dream-like start in life.

Some things are better left unsaid ...and unwatched.
When it comes to Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's infamous sex tape, David Hasselhoff refuses to lay eyes on it.
"No. No!" the actor, 63, said on Sirius Xm's Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy when asked if he's seen the video. "Because I knew her. It was like watching my freaking sister. No I couldn't. Did you watch it?"
Jenny McCarthy, who starred alongside Anderson in Scary Movie 3, had a different opinion.
"I knew her. I loved it!," McCarthy, 43, admitted. "But I'm crazy David."

*This review is meant to be entertaining. So, drop the red pen, and let me do me. Paul Reubens requested that we not give away much of the plot, and I will honor that request so everyone can go watch the movie with no prior knowledge. Having said that, let's get to it!*
I grew up on Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens). I had the doll that oddly resembled the Steve Urkel doll, and watched the television show every chance I got. The excitement upon hearing a new adventure was on the horizon was intense. Pee-Wee’s is long overdue for another feature film and thank goodness Netflix came to the rescue. And, to hear that Judd Apatow was attached was certainly a nice cherry on top. We may not be in the days of Superbad anymore, but Apatow has contributed a great deal to comedy in the last decade.

'The Martian' with Matt Damon: Box office record? 'The Martian' fights 'Gravity' for October box office record; actual winner, however, is an Earthbound comedy Released by 20th Century Fox, Ridley Scott's extremely well-received The Martian, starring Matt Damon in the title role as a U.S. astronaut fighting for his life after being left behind all alone on Mars, opened with an estimated $18 million on Friday, Sept. 30, '15, at 3,831 North American theaters, about two thirds of which in 3D. Bear in mind that the Friday estimate includes $2.5 million from Thursday evening and midnight screenings. Directed by eventual Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón, Warner Bros.' Gravity, another extremely well-received space movie about a pioneering American fearlessly kicking death's ass while stranded in a – literally – alien realm, collected $17.48 million over the same weekend back in 2013. Sandra Bullock starred as the lost-in-space astronaut and middle-American Mom struggling to...

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.
The list of movies coming to HBO in January 2020 are surprisingly action-packed as well. John Wick...

Ja Rule could've had it all. The rapper appeared in the first Fast and Furious film in a bit part that earned him a cool $15,000, 2 Fast 2 Furious director John Singleton told Grantland. However, when approached to appear in a starring role in the sequel, Ja Rule turned it down. "I just felt it wasn't the best move for me as far as what I want to do in Hollywood right now," he told MTV at the time, in September 2002. "I'm really trying to do this acting thing very seriously. And, you know, sometimes every move is not the right move.
