Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep became very familiar with each other after their work on Devil Wears Prada. After collaborating, Streep shared her true feelings about her co-star’s acting abilities. And they were words that stuck with Blunt for a long time.

Blunt and Streep first worked alongside each other in the film The Devil Wears Prada. Blunt was cast as Streep’s assistant in the feature, and she admitted to being very nervous about the film. Matt Damon made his Hollywood debut in 1997, as Will Hunting in the Oscar-winning movie Good Will Hunting. Since then, he has made appearances in many other movies, including the hit action franchise, Bourne. After five movies, one of which Damon missed out on, the series took a break. But now, it looks like things are back in gear.

According to Matt Damon, director Edward Berger of All Quiet on the Western Front has an idea for the next instalment of the Bourne franchise after fans thought we had come to an end with Jason Bourne in 2016. But given Damon is currently 53 years old, it would be quite the task for the actor to reprise the role of the spy. And we already know he is not doing at least one thing in the move if it ever happens.

Matt Damon has scored some of the best action roles throughout his career, with one of the most prominent ones being that of the iconic spy Jason Bourne in his blockbuster film series. But as much as he earned a critical commendation for that one role, there was a time when even the first film from the saga almost didn’t get made.

The reason behind this was the creative differences between the mastermind Doug Liman, who helmed the masterpiece The Bourne Identity, and the production studio Universal Pictures. In fact, had it not been for Damon acting as a mediator between the two, this unarguably most difficult movie of all the films from the series just may have never been brought into existence!

Matt Damon would somewhat reunite with his Good Will Hunting and Ocean’s series co-star Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer. However, they would not share a scene together in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic. The two are set to star in an action-comedy-heist movie that brings them back to their native Boston in The Instigators. The heist film is co-written by Affleck, but will be directed by the Road House remake‘s Doug Liman. Affleck says, “The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” He also stated that he’s always “wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”
Entertainment Weekly has the first look at The Instigators, which features images with the co-leads and their co-star Hong Chau, who recently worked with Damon in the critically and audience-panned Downsizing. The best things come in threes, especially stories. In Western nations, we like a three-act structure in which we set a status quo, watch our heroes fall, and then see them return to greatness. Some of these stories cannot be held within a single movie. For those epics, those monumental narratives, the movie trilogy was born. Trilogies represent some of the best that cinema has to offer, movies that changed the culture and the art form. The trilogy might vary in quality from film to film, but together these three films tell a story that cannot be ignored.
Before we get too far, let’s lay out our criteria. The trilogies chosen here are those intended to be a trilogy, either from the outset or by the end of the third film. Thus we’re including things such as the Toy Story and Indiana Jones trilogies, even though those continued on with further entries.

Lola better get some new sneakers.
Sony Pictures Classics has announced it will re-release Tom Tykwer’s 1999 German action classic Run Lola Run, in a new 4K restored version, in U.S. cinemas this summer, timed to the 25th anniversary of the movie’s original domestic bow.
Franka Potente stars as the titular athletic Lola in the film, racing to find 100,000 deutsche marks in time to rescue her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) who is in deep with a local gangster. Every choice Lola makes, big or small, changes her ultimate fate. The film is told three times, with three separate endings, an approach that recalls video game aesthetics. Herbert Knaup, Joachim Król and Nina Petri co-star.
Run Lola Run was a sensation when it was first released and grossed more than $7 million in the United States and Canada for SPC, becoming one of the highest-grossing non-English-language films ever at that time.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” Matt Damon playing the skilled and troubled Jason Bourne? Seemed like a perfect fit when he got the role in 2002’s The Bourne Identity. He’d smashed it in Good Will Hunting and Saving Private Ryan. Ocean’s Eleven showed he could handle action as part of a crew. Strangely, though, the one guy who couldn’t picture Damon as Bourne was himself. As random and arbitrary as Netflix's Top 10 can appear, it starts to become more predictable upon closer inspection. Like the media rental stores of ancient times (which were essentially the streaming services of their epoch), new Netflix originals inevitably rank high before dwindling off in the same way that Blockbusters would initially stock their shelves with roughly 10,000 copies of the latest tentpole. Along those same lines, viewers frequently play catchup right before a show returns by marathoning its previous season(s), which is how a cult Syfy comedy series like "Resident Alien" ends up charting seemingly out of the blue.
Then there are the under-the-radar titles that find their way onto Netflix only to be discovered anew by its users, much like a customer perusing the aisles of their local video rental shop and stumbling upon some previously ignored movie featuring one of their favorite actors. So it is...

Road House is currently streaming on Prime Video, but the film’s director, Doug Liman, wishes audiences were watching it in theaters. According to the acclaimed filmmaker, Amazon is “giving audiences the shaft” by not hosting the film on the silver screen, and he feels as if he’s lost a public battle for the project’s worth. In a video posted by Casey Neistat, the notable YouTube sensation gets Liman’s uncensored version of the story and chronicles the director’s trip to the Road House premiere, which, adding insult to injury, takes place in a packed theater.
When Neistat and Liman meet in the room where the sound for Road House was mixed, it becomes apparent that Liman designed the film for theaters. Different studio spaces represent different mixing environments. If a movie will stream in living rooms, sound engineers mix the audio in a smaller space to replicate living room environments.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

“One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.” Those words, uttered by Patrick Swayze’s James Dalton in 1989’s Road House, are the rules to defending a roadhouse, and watching Doug Liman’s remake, you may find yourself wishing that someone had told the filmmakers that a little bit of number three goes a long way, because this nihilistic retooling of Rowdy Herrington’s cult classic is anything but.

Jake Gyllenhaal fills Patrick Swayze’s shoes in a brashly entertaining romp featuring a knockout debut from the UFC champ
It would be easy to dismiss a new Road House – the shoes left by a gritty, sweaty Patrick Swayze in the pulpy 1989 action film are hard ones to fill; sequels and remakes tend to tip the fine balance of good-bad that defined so many films from that period into straight-up bad. Plus, the Road House remake from The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman is (controversially) bypassing theaters and headed straight to streaming via Amazon Prime Video – by now, given the deluge of disposable content, a dubious distinction for quality.
The straight-to-streaming release plan, however intentional, is indeed a bummer, as Liman’s rowdy, campy remake both looks and sounds more expensive and textured than what we’ve come to expect from digital releases. This Ultimate Fighting Championship-inflected Road House,...

Exclusive: After declaring in a Deadline guest column that he would boycott the SXSW Opening Night debut of Road House, director Doug Liman has changed his mind, and is in the Paramount Theatre right at this moment. I’m told that Liman won’t take the stage to introduce the movie, he’ll just be in the crowd watching. It’s a tradition for him, slipping into theaters and watching how his movies play.
Liman made the difficult decision to stay away because he felt that Amazon MGM signed him to a deal that called for a theatrical release of Road House, but instead switched and is launching the film directly on the Amazon Prime streaming service, beginning March 21. Director Doug Liman has always understood the power of a leading man maximized to his fullest potential. He saw the action hero beneath Matt Damon's baby fat with "The Bourne Identity" and the untapped comedic possibilities of an unshackled Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow." Now, with "Road House," his remake of the 1989 action classic of the same name, exquisite use is made of Jake Gyllenhaal, who is ferocious and ferociously funny, allowing menace and humor to lurk beneath the actor's disconcertingly chiseled frame. Gyllenhaal is an actor with boyish good looks, but eyes capable of portraying an infinite black hole of moral degradation. His take on Dalton, a desperate ex-UFC fighter who finds himself yanked into action to defend a bar from crooks in Key West, Florida, is Mr. Rogers biding his time until he turns into the Hulk. It's a hell of a performance from one hell of an actor.

Cillian Murphy has done commendable work in portraying the titular role in Oppenheimer. It was almost 10 years ago when Warner Bros. Pictures released Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi thriller from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) that starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Edge of Tomorrow was acclaimed at the time of its release as a more intelligent than usual, character-driven and kinetic sci-fi action movie. Yet the studio, producers, and director ended up fighting over the movie’s title before it was even released, a classic Hollywood marketing conundrum that may have hurt the film’s chances.

Amazon Prime Video is releasing a remake of the '80s classic "Road House" this year, one that will star Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role (stepping in for the late Patrick Swayze). Director Doug Liman's new take on the film will be changing things up in several ways. For one, Gyllenhaal's version of Dalton will be an ex-UFC fighter. Whether or not he does any throat-ripping remains to be seen. But it sounds like the filmmakers really upped the ante in the action department as well. How so? By implementing, er, very fancy, high-tech pillow fights.

The spice must flow, and take over most theaters. While Denis Villeneuve’s gargantuan-sized blockbuster will suck up much of the oxygen when it comes to discussions around March’s releases, there’s plenty more to uncover. From adventurous festival favorites to micro-sized productions to a would-be blockbuster relegated to streaming, here are my picks for what to see next month.

Much like “Road House” philosopher-turned-bouncer James Dalton, Jake Gyllenhaal considers all sides to an argument.
Gyllenhaal is ready for the debut of Doug Liman’s remake of the 1989 bruiser fave, but there has been a degree of controversy about the forthcoming thriller. Liman, whose previous work includes “Go,” “The Bourne Identity” and “American Made,” has gone to war with Amazon for not releasing his “Road House” in theaters. He penned an open letter recently, and in it, Liman wrote he’d be boycotting the movie’s premiere at Austin’s SXSW festival. “Amazon is hurting way more than just me and my film. If I don’t speak up about Amazon, who will?” he wrote.
In his note, Liman laid out that he signed with MGM with the anticipation of making a theatrically released film. Amazon later bought MGM and, despite Liman’s report that the movie is testing through the roof,...

Jake Gyllenhaal has weighed in on Doug Liman’s decision to boycott the premiere of their upcoming remake of the 1989 action movie Road House.
Liman is refusing to attend the film’s March 8 world premiere at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival next month because the film’s studio, Amazon MGM Studios, is releasing Road House on Prime Video without a run in theaters. Gyllenhaal stars in the film as Elwood Dalton, a bouncer who takes a job in a rowdy Florida bar.
In an interview with Total Film, Gyllenhaal was diplomatic about the situation, saying, “I adore Doug’s tenacity, and I think he is advocating for filmmakers, and film in the cinema, and theatrical releases. But, I mean, Amazon was always clear that it was streaming. I just want as many people to see it as possible. And I think we’re living in a world that...

I never thought I would say it, but I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Road House reboot. With less than a month to go until the release of Road House, Total Film has dropped a few images featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor in the midst of one hell of a battle. Check them out below!
As seen in the trailer, Road House will feature some fantastic fights, and Gyllenhaal told Total Film that director Doug Liman wanted to do them in a way never before seen. “[Director Doug Liman] always does action in a different way, and he came to me and said, ‘I want to do fights in a way that has never been done before,’” Gyllenhaal said. “He became pretty much obsessed with how the punches would land, and the kicks would land. Matt Damon’s resume can boast of some of the most critically and commercially successful films in the history of Hollywood, which makes him one of the most accomplished movie stars in the world. Joining him on that list is none other than his best friend and prolific actor Ben Affleck, who together with Damon, won their first Oscar award.
Matt Damon in a still from The Bourne Identity
Ever since then, both stars have been seen several times sharing the screen and continuing to soar high in the industry. But in the past, Damon could’ve easily been part of one of the most critically acclaimed films that his friend was in and even directed, titled The Town. The reason why he rejected the role was because he didn’t like the script, while Affleck claimed that it was because he was too expensive for the project’s budget.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. The Road House remake looks badass. I was among those who were wary of director Doug Liman remaking the Patrick Swayze action classic, especially when I heard Jake Gyllenhaal would be leading the cast. Gyllenhaal is a great actor, but would he be good as Dalton the bouncer? And what about the hair??? Could he ever compare to the late Crazy Swayze? But, over the last few months, the buzz has been building that this Road House remake is terrific. It’s apparently one of the highest-testing movies in Amazon-MGM history, and the trailer rocked the internet when it came out about a month ago. Against all odds, it looks like Liman and Gyllenhaal have made a slam-bang action flick that updates and pays homage to the original film without being derivative. So why isn’t it going to theaters?...

Things behind the scenes of the Jake Gyllenhaal-led Road House remake have been quite rocky as director Doug Liman is less than thrilled about Amazon’s decision to drop it on their streaming service. Liman, known for acclaimed gems such as Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity, stressed the movie is made for the big screen experience, even claiming it might be one of his best works to date.
However, the 37-year-old podcaster Brian Davis, aka True Geordie, known for delving into Mma-based matters, isn’t too thrilled about Liman’s upcoming remake of the 1989 classic.

While Jake Gyllenhaal is no stranger to playing menacing characters, Davis said he isn’t believable in the role of Elwood Dalton, claiming he was “more believable as a gay cowboy”, referring to Brokeback Mountain.

Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne films have been some of the best in the spy genre. The first three films The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum have proved that other excellent spy stories other than James Bond can also be done with a certain level of groundedness and grit compared to Bond.

The upcoming Road House remake looks to be one of Amazon’s biggest movies of the year, but according to Variety, there has been some major drama brewing behind the scenes for several years, all to do with whether to release the movie theatrically or on streaming.
Road House will debut on Prime Video next month, but the lack of a theatrical release has caused some acrimony. When director Doug Liman first signed on to direct the movie, Michael de Luca and Pam Abdy were in charge of MGM at the time, and the intention was that Road House would be developed for the big screen, but that all changed when Amazon acquired MGM for a cool $8.5 billion. De Luca and Abdy left for Warner Bros., but Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke took charge of Road House and was set to give it the green light… but there was one important choice to be made.

When news broke last November that Universal Pictures was developing a sixth Bourne movie with “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger, fans were left wondering if Matt Damon would be returning to his iconic action franchise. The Bourne series, which includes four films headlined by Damon and one by Jeremy Renner, has earned $1.6 billion worldwide. Damon’s last outing was 2016’s “Jason Bourne.”
Damon made a recent appearance on “The Late Show” and stopped short of confirming he’ll star in the new Bourne movie when the topic was brought up by host Stephen Colbert. However, the actor showered incoming Bourne director Edward Berger with praise and sounded hopeful about appearing in the film. Berger had a career breakthrough in 2022 with his Netflix adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which earned nine Oscar nominations, including best picture, and won for international feature and three more prizes.

Although director Doug Liman strongly believed that his remake of the 1989 action classic Road House (watch it Here) deserved a theatrical run, the film is set to be a streaming only release and will be available to watch on Prime Video as of March 21st in more than 240 territories worldwide. The world has changed a lot since 1989, but that does not mean action movies should. At the end of the day, there is something quintessentially appealing about the lone individual standing tall against the many, and the underdog who is ready to do what is right, one bicep curl at a time. For a generation of specific barfly moviegoers, Road House (1989) is an undisputed classic that is probably playing tonight in a dive somewhere out there. In that cult favorite, Patrick Swayze’s tough guy bouncer (or “cooler”) James Dalton travels from New York City to Missouri in order to bring big city values to the sticks.
Yet in this year’s upcoming Road House remake, it is Jake Gyllenhaal’s washed up UFC fighter Elwood Dalton who travels to rural America in order to protect it from the most hideous villain of all in the 21st century: luxury developers.

Jake Gyllenhaal suffers no fools in the first trailer for “Road House.”
The forthcoming remake of the 1989 cult classic finds Gyllenhaal starring as a former Mma fighter whose new life has him defending the honor of a Florida dive bar and its patrons from a wicked real estate baron.
Directed by Doug Liman, “Road House” will have its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival before hitting Amazon Prime Video on March 21. That the film will bypass movie theaters entirely before debuting on the streaming service has become a source of contention between Amazon and Liman. In a piece published Wednesday by Deadline, Liman wrote that he felt betrayed by Amazon, which acquired the rights to “Road House” after the company bought MGM. Liman wrote that he made “Road House” with an eye toward theatrical release, similar to how MGM films like “Creed III” first went to theaters before a streaming bow.

Until this year, "Road House" was one of a handful of '80s action classics that hadn't gotten the reboot treatment, but a new movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal is about to change that. "Road House" 2.0 hits Prime Video in March, but fans can get a taste of the new movie's action now thanks to its just-released first trailer. Can Gyllenhaal match Patrick Swayze's sense of swagger, or will he blaze his own trail as a different version of the cool and collected bouncer who made the original an unlikely hit?
It's hard to tell from this initial two and a half minute first look whether or not this reboot will justify its own existence, but at first blush, the movie certainly seems to have a lot going for it. "The Bourne Identity" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" director Doug Liman is behind the camera here for the first time...

The original Road House movie starring Patrick Swayze is a classic, so I’ll admit to being more than a little skeptical of the upcoming remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Well, Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for the new Road House movie and damn if it hasn’t won me over completely.
You’ve got Jake Gyllenhaal slapping the shit out of everyone, a colourful Florida location filled with alligators, hard-hitting action you can actually follow, and Conor McGregor chewing the scenery in his first film role; I love it.

Jake Gyllenhaal‘s new movie Road House is scheduled to debut on Amazon’s Prime Video on March 21 and the film is set to have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, but don’t expect to see director Doug Liman there.

The upcoming Road House remake is set to premiere at the upcoming SXSW film festival, but director Doug Liman won’t be attending. This isn’t down to any scheduling issue or because he’s busy with another project, but a purposeful choice to protest Amazon not giving Road House a theatrical release.
In a guest column for Deadline, Doug Liman explained why he won’t be attending the Road House premiere, despite considering it to be one of his best movies.
“When Road House opens the SXSW film festival, I won’t be attending. The movie is fantastic, maybe my best, and I’m sure it will bring the house down and possibly have the audience dancing in their seats during the end credits. But I will not be there,” Liman said. “My plan had been to silently protest Amazon’s decision to stream a movie so clearly made for the big screen.

Editors note: From his breakout in Swingers to The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, American Made and his upcoming film with Tom Cruise they plan to shoot in outer space, Doug Liman’s films have a kinetic energy. As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. In this age of high-budgets and higher-expectations, reboots and remakes are among the only types of movies that major studios like to make these days.
So whether you’re feeling cynical about this year’s offerings or optimistic about the second swings filmmakers are taking, here are the biggest reboots and remakes coming in 2024.

The Bourne Supremacy is the second film in the Jason Bourne series, which is based on the novels of the same name by Robert Ludlum. It is the sequel to the first film, called The Bourne Identity, and digs more into the backstory of the highly skilled former CIA assassin suffering from amnesia. The whole series is notable for its realistic and gritty action sequences — particularly the hand-to-hand combat and car chases. Unlike many other action films of its time, The Bourne Supremacy pioneered close-quarters combat and practical effects. While the direction of Paul Greengrass is worth mentioning, the...
