With just hours remaining in 2014, I wanted to document for myself — and share with you — the films that I enjoyed the most this year. I have seen hundreds of titles — on the big screen and on screeners, at festivals and at multiplexes — among them all of the top Oscar contenders, up to and including every film on the documentary and foreign language film shortlists. In other words, I have done my best to be well-versed in what’s out there — but, needless to say, no list of this sort is anything but a subjective exercise for anyone.
It pains me that I do not have room to acknowledge, on the list itself, more of 2014’s extraordinary films (i.e. the 12-year project Boyhood, the acting showcases Birdman and The Imitation Game, the timely Selma and films both profound and moving, such as Citizenfour, Finding Vivian Maier and Leviathan,...

Margaret here with a look at the nominees for the 2014 NAACP Image Awards, as well as the winners of the African American Film Critics Association year-end prizes.
It continues to be a good season for Selma, which racked up eight Image Award nominations-- especially impressive when you consider that there are only seven categories. (Six of its nominations are for acting.) Period drama Belle and James Brown biopic Get On Up both received five nominations each, and the music industry romantic drama Beyond the Lights earned three.
The Aafca announced their awards, naming Selma best picture alongside nine other outstanding films. The Aafca Top Ten Films of 2014 are as follows in order of distinction:
Selma The Imitation Game The Theory Of Everything Birdman Belle Top Five Unbroken Dear White People Get On Up Black Or White

Sunday’s episode saw Music Director, Singer, Actor and Producer Himesh Reshammiya take charge of the mentoring seat for YoYo Honey Singh as he recovers from his illness.
Himesh is not a newbie to judging these kind of musical reality shows and one could tell that he felt very much at home being back in the judging seat. Having already appeared once on RAWstar, the contestants were very excited to have Himesh back as their mentor. We remind you all, that last time, Himesh had already said he will record songs with Akasa, Rituraaj and Darshan.
The theme of this episode was the phrase Black or White. Mentor Himesh explained to the contestants that certain situations in the music industry are either black or white, hit or flop. His judgement of their performances in the episode, would also reflect the same.
The first face off was between Mohan and Akasa.

We can put the web rumors to rest. There was buzz that this film was going to be Frozen 2, but it’s clearly not. Disney has slotted January 23 for the release of Lucasfilm’s new animated pic Strange Magic. Described as a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Strange Magic will be released via Touchstone Pictures. Helped by popular songs from the past six decades, it tells a story of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.
All-star voice cast includes Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph and Sam Palladio. Gary Rydstrom directs a story by George Lucas. Rydstrom also co-wrote the screenplay with David Berenbaum (Elf),and Irene Mecchi (Brave, The Lion King). Mark S. Miller is producing and Lucas is executive producing. Right now Strange Magic...

Maureen O’Hara, now 94, took time to fondly remember the Hollywood greats from her past such as John Wayne and John Ford. Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki said he was just happy to be in the same room as Maureen O’Hara. Masterful screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere gave a moving tribute to Hollywood’s “forgotten” writers. And Harry Belafonte, winner of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, galvanized the industry crowd by asking them to aim higher.
Yes, it was quite a night for the four honorees of the Sixth Annual Governors Awards of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Quite a night. And the Academy got this awards season off to a roaring start with this blessedly non-televised celebration of the greats in this business who may not have always been given their due. It has also become a night for major schmoozing and networking among Academy voters and the huge numbers of Oscar hopefuls.

Hollywood — The 6th annual Governors Awards were held in the Ray Dolby Ballroom in the middle of Hollywood Saturday night. Previously announced honorees Maureen O'Hara, Hayao Miyazaki, Jean-Claude Carrière and Harry Belafonte were of course on hand as the room teemed with familiar faces from this year's Oscar race. Jessica Chastain, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Linklater, Logan Lerman, Michael Keaton, Jennifer Aniston, Patricia Arquette, Jean-Marc Vallée, Tilda Swinton, Oscar Isaac and Eddie Redmayne were just a few of the circuit's fixtures working the room, as the show has become a perennial stop on the Oscar campaign trail. "A Most Violent Year" director J.C. Chandor could be spotted talking over his upcoming Deepwater Horizon project with "The Gambler" star Mark Wahlberg. Clint Eastwood made his first appearance of the season with "American Sniper" around the corner (and was of course besieged upon arrival, ever the popular one). "Selma" director Ava DuVernay and...

Here’s a bittersweet win for the 59-year-old Kevin Costner: The American Association of Retired Persons will pay tribute to the "Dances with Wolves" and "JFK" actor during their annual Movies for Grownups Awards. He’ll receive the organization’s Career Achievement Award at the noteworthy ceremony, taking place on Feb. 2, 2015 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Making this a slightly bigger deal than it seems, news comes in from Relativity Media that Costner’s Oscar-hopeful "Black or White" has a solid date before year’s end, bumping him into the awards contenders pool. Relativity made it clear when they picked up the Toronto Film Festival premiere that an awards push was in the cards, and now it’s official: "Black or White" will open in a limited engagement on Dec. 3, 2014. Exclusive: Kevin Costner has been chosen to receive Aarp’s Career Achievement Award, which will be presented as part of the organization’s annual Movies For Grownups Awards on February 2 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Costner also has officially joined the Oscar race this year with his powerful racial drama Black Or White, which Relativity Media picked up and will release for a one-week Oscar-qualifying run beginning December 3 ahead of its regular run in late January.
The Aarp honor, previously bestowed on the likes of Susan Sarandon, Robert Redford, Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone among others, is one of many Costner has been receiving of late (he got a similar honor at March’s CinemaCon gathering in Las Vegas) and certainly doesn’t hurt in raising the profile of his late entry into this year’s awards season. It’s white-knuckle time for the Napa Valley Film Festival’s organizers, filmmakers and fans, with a key venue and two hotels still fixing earthquake damage ahead of the Nov. 12 opening night. The post-quake craziness comes just as the four-year-old event is getting traction in Hollywood for its Oscar Season-adjacent timing, with companies setting encore screenings and star appearances, to tout awards contenders from earlier in the year.
The festival bills itself a mix of film, food and, of course, wine, with its own wine director pouring bottles from 150 of the region’s best-regarded vineyards. A recent Los Angeles event spotlighting the festival featured The Weinstein Co. President David Glasser, who said his company will use it to push awareness of several TWC awards contenders. Among those projects: The Imitation Game, with festival appearances scheduled for director Morten Tyldum and cast members for the biopic about martyred cryptography pioneer Alan Turing.

After a quiet bow at the Toronto International Film Festival, a distributor is finally coming to the rescue of writer-director Mike Binder's racially charged drama "Black and White." Excuse me, "Black or White," because someone owned the rights to the former and producers couldn't get it cleared. Sharing a title with a Michael Jackson track is easier, apparently. According to Deadline, Relativity is wrapping a deal to acquire domestic rights for the film, which stars Kevin Costner, Octavia Spencer, Gillian Jacobs, Anthony Mackie, and Jennifer Ehle. The story of a widower engaging in a custody battle over the mixed race granddaughter he helped raise, "Black or White" earned mixed reviews out of Tiff. Our own Gregory Ellwood wasn't a fan, noting that Binder's film "simply wants too much" and that Costner's alcoholic character doesn't play. One Direction, the boy band with at least two members who look like 10-year-old Jodie Foster, are back with a moody new ballad and video called "You And I." I assume it's about how sad they are to be lifting song titles from Lady Gaga. But honestly, watch this video. It's going for something. A feeling? I'm not sure, but it's weird and scary. Bizarre. And now, here are nine times it terrified me. 1. Niall's contemplation Oh, acting. I did not know acting would be making a cameo in this video. Niall kicks off this party by looking around in a sort-of-contemplative-but-mostly-dumbfounded way, and the camera pulls back to reveal he is dressed like Edie Sedgwick shopping at Zara. So in this game of Bravely Default, you may be wondering, “If there are a whopping 24 jobs in this game, how might one get more of them?” So I will answer the question you may or may not be wondering.
In the beginning of the game, you have one class; Freelancer. A Freelancer is the jack-of-all trades class. They can learn helpful dungeoneering skills, and are pretty good with whatever weapon you can give them. They learn stuff like Examine, giving you the ability to look at how much health an enemy has (even works on bosses), what element, if any, they are weak to, and what family they are in (might have miscellaneous effects). The other classes you get by killing most bosses. I will list the class, then the name of the boss, and what the class specializes in. This will be in the order they show up on the job menu.

Pokemaniacs, rejoice! If you’ve been hoping for a way to transfer your digital collection of Pokemon from earlier titles in the series to the more recent 3Ds duo of Pokemon X & Y, Nintendo finally has you covered in the form of Pokemon Bank, a downloadable app now available on the 3Ds eShop.
Making use of cloud storage technology, Pokemon Bank is free to download and use for its first month of release, but it’s worth noting that in order to maintain the app’s servers, Nintendo will start charging an annual fee of $4.99 for users on March 14. The app’s primary purpose is to serve as an additional storage facility for those with massive collections of digital critters, allowing up to 3,000 to be stored online for each user.
Perhaps more interesting is the companion app, Pokemon Transporter, available as a separate download from within Bank. Users with copies...

2Nd Update: The damage control tour by The Bachelor star Juan Pablo Galavis continues with another apology, this time to the gay community through GLAAD. He also will be meeting with Lgbt Latinos next week: I have heard from many gay Latinos today who are hurt because of what I said and I apologize. I know gay parents and I support them and their families. They are good parents and loving families. I am a father and I know the feel of being a father, why wouldn’t I want my gay friends to also be happy parents? I also want gay and lesbian youth to know that it is fine to be who you are. Gay or straight, Black or White, Latin or American, what matters here is to respect who we are. Update, 1 Pm: ABC, Warner Horizon and The Bachelor executive producers just issued a statement slamming Bachelor...

Updated: ABC and The Bachelor producers issued a statement Saturday to address star Juan Pablo Galavais’ comments about gay people. The network and production company Warner Horizon said in a joint statement, “Juan Pablo’s comments were careless, thoughtless and insensitive, and in no way reflect the views of the network, the show’s producers or studio.”
News broke earlier today that the first Latino Bachelor star told a reporter at an ABC party at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena that a Bachelor who is a gay man would be “more pervert in a sense. To me...

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

The former child actor's pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band is just the latest in his long line of musical endeavours. Here's a rundown of the finest moments
• Macaulay Culkin forms pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band
There's an old adage that "all actors secretly want to be rock stars, and all rock stars wish they could act". I say "an old adage", what I actually mean is I heard it once and wanted to reference it but couldn't find the quote. This is presumably how all aphorisms are born.
Regardless, examples of the transition are numerous: Russell Crowe has his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, for which you can create your own rhyming slang joke; Joe Pesci once recorded a rap track, which is every bit what you're imagining it's like; and Billy Bob Thornton has released at least four LPs specifically targeted at a demographic of vest and tobacco-spitting enthusiasts.

The CBS/CW/Showtime panels are wrapping up at the Television Critics Association press junket in Beverly Hills, and to celebrate their interesting bevy of new shows, we quizzed a bunch of the networks’ stars and asked them to name their favorite gay entertainers of all time. We caught Robin Williams (who stars in the new sitcom The Crazy Ones with Sarah Michelle Gellar), Tyra Banks (whose next season of America’s Next Top Model will feature eight competing male models), Arsenio Hall (whose new talk show debuts September 9), LL Cool J, Aisha Tyler, Toni Collette (of the new drama Hostages), and my beloved Julie Chen. Check out their gay idols of choice below.

Years ago I worked with Wayland Flowers and Madame. We did Laugh-In together, the second Laugh-In. Wayland himself was such a sweet guy, and Madame was the most vicious c*nt in the world.

Justin Timberlake's "Take Back the Night" music has the singer keeping to his black and whites but also copping a little Mj for your pleasure -- remember his "Black or White" video? How he took to dancing in the streets all over the world? Well, Timberlake only tries world domination in Chinatown -- and only in order to get bizzay -- but some themes are still there... The white tennies I'm feeling. The black bib shirt I am not feeling. Ugly concert footage intersperses the night footage of romping through the nabe. And there are very few Chinese people living in...

Before we begin, an urgent concern: Should we be thrilled or a little depressed that Christina Applegate ranks among the best Sytycd guest judges? Yeah, she’s not flawless — she’s a little cloying in her abject praise and teary-eyed awe — but the woman knows her vocabulary, connects individually with contestants, wears a Mexi-print top like your favorite aunt, remembers past routines without hesitation, and doesn’t mind being critical. Can’t say the same about Kenny Ortega, y’all. And he directed High School Musical 3 and Hocus Pocus, those true choreographed miracles.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There are too many damn contestants at this stage of the game. I can’t separate my Jades from my Jennas, my Mariahs from my Maleces. They’re all twirling, hard-smiling pageant droids to me right now, and you know what? It’s too damn hot out to remember everyone.

Wade Robson, who denied that Michael Jackson molested him during a 2005 trial, has now filed a posthumous claim against Jackson's estate.
Pics: Candid Celeb Sightings
In court documents obtained by Et, Robson requests money from the Michael Jackson Estate for alleged childhood molestation.
Robson developed a friendship with Jackson when he was five and even appeared in the music videos for Black or White, Jam and Heal the World. Now 30 years old, Robson is a well-respected choreographer who has appeared on So You Think You Can Dance and hosted the MTV show The Wade Robson Project in 2003.
In the papers, Robson's lawyer asks to file the childhood sexual abuse case under seal, which would prevent it from being made available to the public.
Howard Weitzman, attorney for the Michael Jackson Estate and its co-Executors, calls the claim "outrageous and pathetic" in a statement to Et.

Celebrity choreographer Wade Robson -- famed for his work with *Nsync, Britney Spears, and "So You Think You Can Dance" -- has filed legal documents against the Michael Jackson Estate for "childhood sexual abuse."
Robson, who appeared in Michael Jackson's "Dangerous: The Short Films" "Black Or White" video, is also known for his relationship with Britney Spears, which caused turmoil when she was dating Justin Timberlake.
According to TMZ, the now 30-year-old dancer met Jackson when he was five years old and they "develooped a friendship." Between the ages of 7 and 14, Robson had sleepovers with Jackson at his Neverland ranch and Jackson's homes in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
In 2005, Robson was a witness for the defense at Jackson's child molestation trial, and he denied that Jackson had ever touched him inappropriately. During the same trial, Jackson's housekeeper testified that she saw Jackson in the shower with Robson when Robson was 8 or 9 years old.

Growing up is tough. Fortunately, we do not realize how tough it is until we have made it through the tunnel to adulthood. If we knew how tough it was, we probably would not make it. Life is also about experiences. These experiences form us and the way we view things. All children hate to hear that they need perspective and experience in order to understand things, but the older we get the more true that statement becomes. There are certain things that we cannot grasp until we experience them. Lucky for us, television tries to help us out in understanding the pressures of youth. A show can take on meaning when we watch it as a child and then mean something totally different through an adult lens. What we think is outlandish while watching it at the age of 10 may seem totally understandable as we grow and face similar situations.

Football, you either love it or you hate it right? But when it comes to the Super Bowl everyone loves it. You don’t have to be a football fan to watch it or even enjoy it. Some people (apparently) watch it because they enjoy the commercials, others patiently wait until half time to watch the show. During this year’s Super Bowl, Twitter was full of jokes about there being a football game in the middle of a Beyonce concert. A feeling shared by a lot of people every single year, no matter who is performing. So here’s a list of the top 10 best concerts featured in the middle of a football game.

For almost a decade and a half, the gaming community has been obsessed with catching them all. Yes, those cute, trainable Pokemon, with their evolution cycles and amazing elemental combat abilities, have been around since 1998. Since then, we’ve received quite a few iterations of the now iconic formula, taking us to different digital regions where everyday people are obsessed with the wild, animal-like creatures, devoting tons of time and energy into training them.
This year, the venerable role-playing franchise is celebrating another milestone. For the first time ever, its lore is being expanded through the use of numbered sequels. 10. Zach Galifianakis in Fiona Apple's "Not About Love"
We still have hope that these two will find love if only to see how eccentric and outlandish their offspring could possibly be. Apparently they met while performing repeatedly at the same club in Los Angeles, which means that the opportunity for the great reality show "Zach and Fiona Act Brilliantly Weird Together" goes fulfilled only in our heads.
9. Macaulay Culkin in Michael Jackson's "Black or White"
We could have gone with George Wendt for this one, but in 1991, no one could touch Macaulay Culkin after "Home Alone." After the stereotypical "turn the music down" parental yell, Culkin does what every 12-year-old kid wanted to do at the time. He will later show up as a hip-hopper and look tougher than Michael Jackson. Too bad the song is kind of lame, though. Eh. There's always the morph scene.

Ready for a fight? Michael Jackson would've been 54 years old today, so instead of dwelling on bizarro distractions like Conrad Murray, Debbie Rowe, or the legendary La Toya, let's brawl about the one thing that will always matter about the King of Pop: the music. Time to rank his 54 best tunes, and that includes his Jackson 5/Jacksons stuff. It doesn't include his cameo vocal in Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," however.
Can I just say how difficult it is to pick Michael Jackson's 54 best songs? I could've focused more on his Jackson 5-era stuff, but I think it's only right to give Thriller and Off the Wall most of the attention. Without further ado, here are my picks for Michael Jackson's 54 greatest songs. Your job? School me with dissent.
54. "You Are Not Alone"
53. "Will You Be There"
52. "Speed Demon"
51. "Ben"
50. "Dangerous"
