Raven Banner Entertainment has launched sales at the Cannes Film Festival’s market on the reboot of Roger Corman’s cult sword and sorcery film series, “Deathstalker,” which is currently shooting in Canada.
Daniel Bernhardt stars as the titular character in this reimagined instalment, directed by Steven Kostanski. Bernhardt plays a barbarian cursed by a magical talisman, leading him into conflict with a malevolent wizard and monstrous assassins.
The original “Deathstalker” films, produced by Corman in the 1980s, followed the success of John Milius’ “Conan the Barbarian.” Kostanski’s reboot focuses on the fantasy setting, utilizing creature suits, prosthetic FX make-up and stop-motion animation from his Action Pants FX shop, which recently completed work on upcoming horror-comedy “Frankie Freako,” which is also being sold by Raven Banner at Cannes.

All eyes at this year’s Cannes Film Festival will be on the hotly anticipated premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic Megalopolis. Laurence Fishburne is part of the ensemble cast and is no stranger to debuting a pricey, high-profile project at Cannes.
In 2003, Fishburne hit the Croisette for the Wachowskis’ action sequel The Matrix Reloaded, in which he reprised his role as Morpheus after originating the character in the 1999 sci-fi smash. Also in attendance was Fishburne’s then-wife Gina Torres, who played Cas in the sequels.
After The Matrix introduced viewers to Neo (Keanu Reeves), a computer hacker who discovers that humans have been enslaved in a simulation engineered by AI machines, Reloaded catches up six months later with Neo’s journey alongside Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus as they battle the Machine Army. THR’s review was lukewarm but noted that Fishburne “handles well the transition to...

The 2024 summer box office season kicked off with a whimper over the weekend. Universal's "The Fall Guy," which boasts a cast led by Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") and Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer"), debuted to a very disappointing $28.5 million domestically. That was, essentially, on par with 2021's "Free Guy," a movie that opened under far worse circumstances as the pandemic was a much larger factor at that time. It's a grim number for a $130 million blockbuster with an A-list cast. So much so that it now ranks as the worst summer season kick-off movie in decades.
No movie from 2004 on has opened lower than $29 million on the first weekend of May. For the last 15 years, we've had a big Marvel movie in theaters to help kick things off with a bang. Last year we had "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" opening to $118.4 million. It even held quite well and posted a $60.5 million second weekend,...

In horror, bodies are usually split into parts, not the movies themselves.
Lots of slasher icons are revived for sequel upon sequel over the years but very few franchises — in any genre — have released a trilogy of movies within one year. Lionsgate’s “The Strangers” is breaking down the door in an ambitious, three-chapter strategy to give horror fans a never-before-seen horror “odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time “The Strangers” has come sneaking into theaters. The original 2008 film, inspired by real-life break-ins and the Charles Manson murders, starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a not-so-happy couple who get an unwelcome knock at their door in the middle of the night. They turn away a creepy woman asking “Is Tamara home?” but are soon plagued by masked, knife-wielding home invaders. The movie became a sleeper hit, making $82 million off a $9 million budget, and 10 years it later spawned a sequel,...

Epic war-time survival tale “The Guns of Muschu” has already assembled a weighty cast ahead of a production start in the first quarter of 2025.
The film is an adaptation of the non-fiction book “The Guns of Muschu,” written by Don Dennis, with an adapted screenplay by Tom Broadhurst and Jack Brislee (“Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan”). The narrative brings to life a pivotal chapter of Australian war history with gritty authenticity, recounting the high body count Operation Copper, a mission during WWII when Australian and New Zealand troops were sent into the jungles of Papua New Guinea.
The objective of the mission was to investigate the Japanese defenses on Muschu Island, capture a Japanese officer for interrogation and discover the location of two naval guns on the island that were protecting a harbor. Eight commandos were landed as part of the operation, but only one survived.

The best things come in threes, especially stories. In Western nations, we like a three-act structure in which we set a status quo, watch our heroes fall, and then see them return to greatness. Some of these stories cannot be held within a single movie. For those epics, those monumental narratives, the movie trilogy was born. Trilogies represent some of the best that cinema has to offer, movies that changed the culture and the art form. The trilogy might vary in quality from film to film, but together these three films tell a story that cannot be ignored.
Before we get too far, let’s lay out our criteria. The trilogies chosen here are those intended to be a trilogy, either from the outset or by the end of the third film. Thus we’re including things such as the Toy Story and Indiana Jones trilogies, even though those continued on with further entries.

Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.
“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.
So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.
“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

Oliver Stone is more than just a filmmaker. The man enlisted in the United States Army during the time of the Vietnam War and when he returned, he decided to tell the harrowing stories of war through the art of filmmaking. His 1986 film Platoon starring was one such film, but it could’ve ended up looking a bit different if actors like Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner had agreed to be a part of it.
A still from Platoon (1986)
So why did they turn down a film that would go on to become critically acclaimed, do great at the box office, and receive not one, but four Academy Awards? Well, given the fact that the film was based on the Vietnam War and Oliver Stone’s firsthand experience with it, the topic might have been a bit too much for the actors.

The writer and director, best known for his work on titles like The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Netflix’s Daredevil series, will both direct the film and pen its screenplay. Warner Bros. is going back to the Matrix.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

The Matrix cast and crew revolutionized movies 25 years ago with a mesmerizing story and cutting-edge technology. Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix became a surprise hit in 1999 and launched a franchise that extended to movies, comics, and video games.
Keanu Reeves gave a career-defining performance as Neo, paving the way for his status as a bonafide action star and fan-favorite actor. His supporting cast in The Matrix included Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. Together, they delivered a movie that influenced a generation of filmmaking and holds up 25 years later. The Matrix may have been a surprise then, but now it’s no wonder the cast remains active in movies and TV.

Rare Picture of Leonardo DiCaprio and Monica Bellucci Before His Titanic Fame Will Make You Feel Old
With Leonardo DiCaprio approaching 50 and Monica Bellucci approaching 60, it’ll be almost three decades since dating rumors between the two ignited, thanks to one photo. It remains unconfirmed if they were ever romantically inclined towards each other as nothing apart from that pic suggested that being the case, which has once again gone viral since finding its way to the internet.
1995 was a major year for DiCaprio, as it was only four years since the actor made his debut, which witnessed him garnering major exposure with The Basketball Diaries and The Quick and the Dead. ’95 was also the same year when he would cross paths with the Italian sensation Monica Bellucci.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Might Prove To Bring Marvel Out Of Its Financial Slump (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Deadpool & Wolverine dropped its first teaser last Sunday, and it is here with a lot of hope and promise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ryan Reynolds again reprises his role as the Merc with a Mouth, and Hugh Jackman comes out of retirement to play everyone’s favorite mutant, Logan. The prequels have a few records to their name, and this one might successfully bring the Marvel fans back to the theatres and mint in good cash.

The Wachowskis' 1999 cyber-thriller "The Matrix" took the world by surprise. Although cyber-thrillers and V.R.-inflected sci-fi films were de rigueur throughout the '90s, the Wachowskis' unique blend of black-trench coat cool, overloaded action, and trippy pop existentialism shook the zeitgeist in unprecedented ways. The premise was powerful: in the distant future, humanity will be enslaved by intelligent machines and bodily stuffed into goopy cocoons. The electrical impulses in human brains are used by the Machines as a power supply, and every human being has a needle plugged into their skulls. In order to keep those impulses pulsing, the Machines have created an elaborate virtual reality for its living batteries, an electric realm called the Matrix. The Matrix is what you or I might call "the real world."
The notion that our perceived lives are merely an illusion is quite ancient, and even the sci-fi spin on that philosophy...

The 2018 film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, was a boldly stylistic and striking foray into the flagging superhero genre, and featured a wild multi-dimensional story that brought multiple Spider-People (and a Spider-Pig) together from various threads in Marvel Comics canon. The main character was Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), although audiences also met a few versions of the original Spider-Man Peter Parker as well. Critics and audiences loved "Into the Spider-Verse," and the film would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The 2023 sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" resembled "The Matrix Reloaded" in many ways. It was twice as visually dazzling, and it was more narratively ambitious ... and it was only half of a movie. For being so much bigger, "Across" is ultimately the lesser movie. We'll have to wait to see if "Across the Spider-Verse" is good after we see "Beyond the Spider-Verse,...

The long-awaited "Beetlejuice" sequel is finally coming out later this year, and Warner Bros. has just allowed the hype train to leave the station. The unfortunate circumstances surrounding Alec Baldwin’s Western, Rust, hadn’t deterred the production from continuing. After the immensely tragic events of the accidental killing of the movie’s former Director of Photography, Halyna Hutchins, filming would inevitably come to a halt in the wake of an investigation. The production resumed filming 18 months after a messy legal process since the star, Alec Baldwin, had discharged a faulty prop gun that had become legitimately loaded. Deadline has now revealed an exclusive first look at the film with newly released images.
According to Deadline, “Rust is based on a story developed by [writer/director] Joel Souza and Baldwin: A 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, is taken on a violent, harrowing journey to old Mexico by his long-estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Deadpool 3: Here’s How Much The Previous Films In The Ryan Reynolds-Led Franchise Made ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Deadpool 3 is still a few months away from its release, but social media is bustling with pictures from the film’s set and several rumors about the plot. Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as the Merc with a Mouth, and it will bring back everyone’s favorite Wolverine actor, Hugh Jackman, as the clawed mutant. The film has already generated a buzz online and might help get the MCU out of its misery of box office duds, especially after The Marvels.
The first two films in this franchise did well at the box office and created a few records. In addition to giving the audience one of the best superhero movie franchises, the films also saved Ryan’s career. The Canadian actor is absolutely perfect for the role.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

This article contains spoilers for "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes."
"The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" takes the "Star Wars" approach in following a massively successful series of movies by going back in time and telling the story of the villain. Except, where Darth Vader was a fascinating and prominent threat in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, Coriolanus Snow wasn't exactly a force to be reckoned with in the "Hunger Games" series (nor a cool and layered character that begged to have their backstory revealed).
Yet, somehow, the "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" film adaptation manages to be an exciting return to this PG-13 battle royale, complete with a plot that's almost unpredictable. It's not that it does something vastly different and fresh, but because it stays so close to retelling the original story, it makes what comes after more impactful and inevitable.

Chess is ruthless: you’ve got to be prepared to kill people – Nigel Short
That quote opens the new Aussie thriller Kane, the camera focusing on Abe playing a game. In voiceover Abe’s driver, Benny tells us a few things. Abe is an old-school gangster, all about loyalty and honour. He also has dissociative identity disorder more commonly known as multiple personalities, and as he’ll mention shortly, he’s off his meds. He also tells us that Abe’s opponent is Frankie, a former member of his outfit who is now his rival for control of the city’s underworld. A rivalry that has turned bloody
From here writer/director Blair Moore (Canadian Psycho) lets Benny tell the story of the past twenty-four hours in flashback as he’s being interrogated by the police,...

There’s a soaring ambition but only a modest intent in Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s sober debut The Kitchen, a visually impressive depiction of things to come that simmers with all manner of protest but never hits boiling point. On the one hand, it’s a shame, ending on a quiet moment of understanding just as all hell is about to break loose. But on the other, it’s refreshing to see two young filmmakers trying to hone their storytelling skills rather than pour everything into a spectacular calling card. If Attack the Block hadn’t been so slavish in trying to siphon inspiration from much better cult movies to become a cult movie in its own right, it might have looked like this: a genuine vision of a nightmarish, dystopian future that will ring alarm bells for any city-dweller familiar with the depressing effects of gentrification.
