Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. These are films of culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog,...

We salute the film work of one of Britain's very best, and most versatile, film actors: Mr Eddie Marsan...
Eddie Marsan isn't just one of the best British actors working today – he's also one of the busiest, appearing in all kinds of supporting roles in major movies, while also appearing on TV a lot, on both sides of the Atlantic. He was fantastic as the latter lead in BBC One's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell last year and he's also a regular on Showtime's Ray Donovan as Ray's brother Terry, an ex-boxer suffering from Parkinson's disease.
On the big screen though, it's Marsan's versatility that really makes him so watchable. He's had attention grabbing turns in minor roles in blockbusters like Hancock, Mission: Impossible III and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films, but he's also at home amongst a big ensemble in more serious fare like Spielberg...

Daniel Radcliffe is beloved by millions, smart, unassuming, humble, verbose, and clear-headed about his fame. Fans will be relieved to know that he narrowly escaped being trampled by zebras and eaten by lions on the set of "Victor Frankenstein," in which he plays Igor, the hapless right-hand man to Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley's classic novel. The movie is a prequel of sorts. It is not about the monster, birthed from the reassembled parts of human corpses, but rather about the early relationship that develops between Frankenstein and his deformed assistant, not to mention a young trapeze artist played by "Downton Abbey" star Jessica Brown Findlay. Way back in 2014, I toured the set of the film at London's Shepperton Studios; during my visit they were shooting an early scene that at the circus, before Frankenstein takes Igor under his wing and removes his hump in a gruesome on-screen procedure (okay,...

A blockbuster movie that also has something to say? The devil you say! Daniel Radcliffe, who co-stars in the upcoming "Victor Frankenstein" with James McAvoy, says the movie penned by Max Landis has some substance between the stitching. “I like the fact that it’s a studio movie with these big sets and sequences, but there’s also a cool intellectual debate going on. Our innate fear of technology and the fear of people who push it beyond where we’re comfortable with it going… feels like a nice combination,” the actor told Nylon. Read More: Review: 'I Frankenstein,' Starring Aaron Eckhart, Yvonne Strahovski & Bill Nighy In this clip from the film directed by Paul McGuigan (“Wicker Park,” "Gangster No. 1"), McAvoy's Victor Frankenstein almost freakishly enthuses about the possibilities of technology to make man immortal. This isn't your grandad's Frankenstein, this is Victor Frankenstein, with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe making a monster come to life to the sound of The Doors in the new trailer for the rebooted horror classic.
McAvoy takes a break from playing the younger Professor X in the ongoing X-Men series, joining forces with fellow franchise veteran Radcliffe to play Victor and Igor respectively.
As you'll have seen from the trailer above, this is a glossy, slick take on Mary Shelley's immortal tale, though of course they can't resist a good "It's Alive!". Fingers crossed for a decent "Yes, master..." from the former Boy Who Lived once the film hits cinemas later this year.
Plus, there's more gigantic lever pulling than you've seen in the past decade. That's how science happens, kids.

Sons of Anarchy’s season 7 premiere will be remembered for the brutality of the final scene, but as is so often the case with this show, there was also beauty in it. Exec producer Paris Barclay, who directed the episode, called into “News & Notes” on EW Radio (SiriusXM 105) and shared how the idea for a rainy night in Charming—a rare occurrence—came about. He always reads Kurt Sutter’s scripts slowly, so he can try to visualize what he’s created.
“Even though it wasn’t in the script, I just imagined it was raining for some unknown reason.

Cannes -- Andrew Hulme is not a name that many film fans know, but you've more than likely seen his work. As an editor, he's worked on "The American," "Red Riding: 1974," 'Control," "Gangster No. 1," and "Lucky Number Slevin," among others, and he's also served as a second unit director on a few films. His directorial debut, "Snow In Paradise," made its appearance at Cannes today in the same timeslot that Ryan Gosling's "Lost River" played yesterday. It bummed me out to see that there were maybe a third as many people waiting to get into this one, and that was before I saw the movie. Afterwards, I'm doubly sorry, because it's a self-assured and sincere piece of work. Based loosely on the true life story of Martin Askew, this movie feels like a direct refutation of the romanticized myth of London's criminal underworld. How many films have you...

The strangest thing about Pusher, the English-language remake of the cult ’90s Danish film, is that it looks more like a Nicolas Winding Refn movie than the original did – curious, given the fact that Refn directed the original, and not this one. Refn’s film, the first in a trilogy, kicked off a career that has steadily grown and which reached a new level with last year’s excellent Drive. It followed a week in the life of a Copenhagen-based drug dealer who suddenly finds himself in heavy debt to his supplier after a deal goes wrong.
The remake transports the material to London, and in so doing leaves behind the grittiness sometimes associated with Danish cinema and replaces it with the British equivalent. If that sounds worryingly like the darkness of the original has been replaced by Guy Ritchie-style cops-and-gangsters, worry not; this is...

The zombie extras in hit new TV drama The Walking Dead have been barred from the set's catering table at lunchtime - because their graphic make-up and deformities put others off their food.
Reports suggest there are two sittings at the craft table - one for the squeamish and one for those who don't mind eating with the undead.
Actor Andrew Lincoln, who leads the cast, tells BlogTalkRadio.com, "We tend to keep the people who are extremely disfigured away from the main craft services. It's wild when you see someone smoking a cigarette and then the smoke comes out of their neck due to the latex. It's just not your normal day job."
But Lincoln's full of praise for the actors who make up the zombie army on the show: "The guys who play these zombies are the most committed people I've ever met. They have to get into make-up at something like four in the morning with four hours of make-up and then they're constantly in the sweltering heat in Atlanta, and they're being touched up during the day. It's brutal.

With Comic-Con so close on the horizon, we'll see a bevy of comic book/sci-fi/horror news exploding next week. In the mean time, there's still plenty of good stuff to gawk at, plenty of bad to balk at and weird stuff to keep you on your toes. The comic book movies in particular are starting to churn the hype machine, as we wait the official word from San Diego.
The Good
• Digital Spy posted the first look photos from BBC's new Sherlock Holmes project have surfaced, featuring two very solid actors in Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson, respectively. The idea of putting them in a contemporary setting is iffy at first, but the talent involved gets rid of the worries pretty quickly. Dr. Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are showrunners, with Gangster No. 1 director Paul McGuigan and frequent Dr. Who director Euros Lyn helming.

We now have confirmation on who will play two of the lead roles in AMC's upcoming TV adaptation of The Walking Dead comics, which is being written, directed and produced by Frank Darabont. They're not necessarily the most recognizable names, but series creator Robert Kirkman seems pretty pleased with the choices -- especially Andrew Lincoln, the man who will play small-town cop Rick Grimes: "Wow, what an amazing find this guy is... Writing Rick Grimes month after month in the comic series, I had no idea he was an actual living breathing human being, and yet here he is. I couldn't be more thrilled with how this show is coming together." There were rumours that Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) would land the lead role, but this turned out not to be the case. Lincoln is a British actor who has starred in Gangster No. 1 and Love Actually, as...

English actor Andrew Lincoln has won the lead role in AMC's The Walking Dead, playing police officer Rick Grimes in the show.
Lincoln began his acting career in 1994 in Drop the Dead Donkey. He went on to roles in Gangster No. 1, Love Actually, Scenes of a Sexual Nature and most recently the TV series Strike Back. Lincoln joins the previously announced Jon Bernthal (The Pacific) who will play Shane, Rick's fellow police officer and best friend from before the zombie apocalypse.
"Andrew Lincoln, wow -- what an amazing find this guy is," said Robert Kirkman, the comic book's creator. "Writing Rick Grimes month after month in the comic series, I had no idea he was an actual living breathing human being, and yet here he is. It's a good week for Stephen Fry. He was part of Craig Ferguson's successful 'experiment' to do an episode of The Late Late Show with no audience, for one. Highly recommend watching that, as their nearly hour-long chat was a great bit of television. And Fry's film Hallelujiah!, about the composer George Frideric Handel and his enduring work Messiah, first announced in 2008, has been given some development funding by the UK Film Council. So it should be moving forward. Fry is co-writing that one with Nick Adams, and was originally announced as director. I hope that remains the case. Finally, the writer/actor/director is working with comic book writer Grant Morrison and film director Paul McGuigan (Gangster No. 1, Push) on a TV show that McGuigan calls "Twin Peaks meets Brigadoon." Wait, what? Why does that sound so fantastic? There's not a lot of detail on the show,...

(Paul Bettany in Gangster No. 1, above.)
[I did this interview with Paul Bettany in 2002 and it originally appeared in Venice Magazine, This was one of the earlier long-form interviews he did in the States. Other than as the "Naked Guy" in A Knight's Tale and the imaginary roommate in A Beautiful Mind, he was unknown to the American public at the time. But Gangster No. 1, while not a perfect film (largely due to the difficulty in believing that Bettany grew into Malcolm McDowell as an older man), showcased an actor in Bettany who had screen presence and intensity that was impossible to look away from.
Bettany is currently starring in the film Legion, set to open this month. Here's a look back at the period in his life when he was just about to become famous.]

The Silent Scream. As delivered by Paul Bettany in his new film Gangster No. 1, it's one of the most bone-chilling moments you'll see on screen this year, or any other year, for that matter. And there isn't a CGI effect in sight. Bettany simply closes his eyes, kicks back his head, and unleashes a blood-curdling scream as the sound drops out completely. This amazingly effective moment is designed to symbolize the unrelenting evil which lurks within Bettany's character, known only as Young Gangster, as he...

British actor Paul Bettany has the dashing looks and commanding presence of a leading man, but his filmography bolsters the case that he's not a creature of vanity or easy paychecks. Whether comparing his drunken Chaucer in "A Knight's Tale" to his ruthless thug in "Gangster No. 1," or his hypocritical do-gooder in Lars von Trier's arthouse masterpiece "Dogville" to his self-flagellating albino monk in a splashy blockbuster like "The Da Vinci Code," Bettany continually proves himself an intelligent and versatile performer who's passionate about new career challenges.
In director Jean-Marc Vallée's luxurious new biopic "The Young Victoria," Bettany co-stars as Lord Melbourne, a Prime Minister who became the 18-year-old, freshly ascended Queen Victoria's self-serving political tutor. Set in 1837, the film portraitizes Victoria (Emily Blunt) as we haven't seen her: a progressive-minded, spirited beauty in the early days of her reign and her courtship with Prince Albert...

Paul Bettany, who recently blew my mind in the incredible Gangster No. 1, is in negotiations to star in Priest, a horror Western that Michael De Luca and Stars Road Entertainment's Josh Donen are producing for Screen Gems for release on August 13, 2010. The move will reunite Bettany with director Scott Stewart, for whom he just finished starring in Legion, an upcoming Screen Gems supernatural thriller. An adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, Priest is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest (Bettany) who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Cory Goodman (The Brood) wrote the screenplay. "I knew the moment I saw Stewart's first cut of 'Legion' that Bettany was Priest and so I mentioned it to him immediately," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said.

Paul Bettany has left CAA to sign with Endeavor.
The British actor first sprang to the attention of U.S. audiences with his comic (and naked) role as Geoffrey Chaucer in Brian Helgeland's "A Knight's Tale" in 2001. High-profile parts in "A Beautiful Mind," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Wimbledon," "Firewall" and "The Da Vinci Code" followed, along with such indie films as "Gangster No. 1," "The Heart of Me" and "Dogville."
His recent films include "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Inkheart."
Bettany next will be seen in "The Young Victoria," the thriller "Legion" and the drama "Creation," in which he'll play Charles Darwin opposite his wife, Jennifer Connelly.
Bettany is managed by Affirmative Entertainment and repped in the U.K. by the Independent Talent Group.

It's rare that two movies get released with the same title (or pretty close) in the same calendar year, but 2009 has two "Push" pictures on the schedule and you can chalk it up to their studios not being members of the tightly controlling MPAA. The first "Push" stars Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Djimon Hounsou and Camilla Belle and is a surprisingly entertaining and stylish thriller from director Paul McGuigan who made some noise with his debut "Gangster No. 1" and more recently with the Ashton Kutcher mystery "Lucky Number Slevin." Filmed on location in Hong Kong, this "Push" finds two...

It is with a tinge of horror that we at Back Stage learn Eddie Marsan is driving himself to our interview in Los Angeles. Our concern is in part because the actor is English and in part because he plays the pathologically tense, deeply miserable, apparently psychotic driving instructor in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky. When Marsan arrives here safely, we are relieved to learn he is a sensibly happy man. And as he shares his story with us, he articulately reveals how he has made his own luck by driving his career forward, thank you very much. It's not that he hasn’t been noticeable to hawk-eyed observers long before this film's October release in the U.S. This year alone he appeared as the cozy but slightly self-absorbed father in Paul Weiland's Sixty-Six, then had a world-class shoving contest with Will Smith in Hancock. But something about Marsan's...

You'd think that being married to Madonna, Guy Ritchie would have picked up on the value of occasionally reinventing oneself. But no, he keeps making the same movie, the same ultra-cool exercises in British gangster violence and stylish criminal shenanigans, and RockNRolla is the latest entry. Then again, the one time he did try something different, the result was Swept Away, so maybe he's wise to stay in his comfort zone.
At any rate, RockNRolla inspires strong feelings of "meh" in me. It's not nearly as clever, funny, or stylish as Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, though the accents are a lot less indecipherable this time around, so that's nice. It's also not as good as Gangster No. 1 or Sexy Beast or many of the other gritty British gangster capers that have come around in the last several years. It feels like a rerun -- which isn't necessarily a bad thing,...
