To understand "Left Behind," one must understand a version of Christianity not widely practiced by many people outside certain pockets of the United States. In some American Evangelical churches, they preach of the coming Rapture, when all of the Christians on Earth -- including the dead ones -- will be bodily scooped up by God and transported into Heaven. The idea of a Rapture is taken from an interpretation from the Book of Thessalonians which didn't enter into the Christian lexicon until about the 1830s, making it a very recent development. When Evangelical churches began to become popular in the United States in the 1950s, a stripe of fundamentalist theology began embracing the Rapture as a prophecy that was almost immediately nigh.

Ever since HBO announced that they were adapting The Last of Us video game as a TV series, fans (myself included) have been eager to see both familiar parts of the story and what the series will change. With the Jan. 15 premiere date growing closer, the cast and creators recently attended Ccxp Brazil to give fans insight into the series and how watching it will hopefully enrich the gaming experience for them.
During a panel hosted by Hyper Omelete, series co-creator Craig Mazin first reassured fans, saying that their goal was to make a TV show “just as compelling and beautiful as the game” and that “everything that made you feel and love and cry is all here [in the series].” Mazin then went on to say “I have played The Last of Us about 12 times. I know how it ends. I love the journey. And we promise, there will be surprises along the way.

The charges against Hackenberger include one count each of causing an animal to be in distress by striking the animal with a whip handle; one charge of causing an animal to be in distress by repeatedly striking the animal.

It's last call for several horror films, including "The Silence of the Lambs" and the "The Omen" trilogy, which are leaving Netflix in December.

A night before Hollywood celebrates the best in film at the Academy Awards, the Golden Raspberry Awards dole out their own anti-Oscars to the year's worst movies and acting performances. Cameron Diaz and Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas were the big winners at the 35th annual Razzies, held last night at Los Angeles' Ricardo Montalban Theater, picking up the evening's most unwanted awards.
Former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron's overtly religious movie about putting the "Christ" back in "Christmas" was the Sam Smith of the Razzies; like Smith at the Grammys,...

Razzies Name Worst Movies of the Year: ‘Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas,’ ‘Transformers,’ ‘Sex Tape’
“Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas” was the biggest winner at Saturday night’s Golden Raspberry Awards, if you can call it “winning” to be named the worst film achievement of the year in four different categories. The faith-based film from the former “Growing Pains” child star “won” in the Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Cameron), Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Combo categories, with the last award going to Cameron “and his ego.” The awards meant that Razzie voters considered Cameron’s film a lesser achievement than “The Legend of Hercules,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Left Behind” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction,...

2014 was a great year for movies. It.s when we got Richard Linklater.s Oscar-headed Boyhood, such great indie fair as Only Lovers Left Alive and Whiplash, and powerful performances all around. But there were also a great deal of duds. The 2014 Razzie Nominations have been released, and with it comes a list of the worst movies from the past year. Can you guess which ones made the cut? Nominated for Worst Picture are: Kirk Cameron.s Saving Christmas Left Behind The Legend of Hercules Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Transformers 4: Age of Ex-stink-Tion (No, that.s not a typo.) This sounds pretty accurate. Tmnt and Transformers were pretty much neck and neck in the blockbuster genre. One grossly warped a beloved childhood franchise into a nightmarish-looking creature feature that cracked uncomfortable sexual jokes about Megan Fox. The other.well, we can.t get the image of Mark Wahlberg...

Transformers: Age of Extinction won the box office in 2014 (it was the fifth highest grossing film of the year), and now it's on its way to winning the Razzies: The fourth film in the Transformers series nabbed seven Razzie nominations this year, more than any other movie nominated. Winning Razzies isn't exactly a good thing, though, as the awards honor the worst in film. Transformers' co-nominees include Left Behind, The Legend of Hercules, and Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas. The Razzies are switching things up this year by adding a new category, the Razzie Redeemer Award, that rewards past Razzie...

For every year that is packed with awards season fodder and memorable movies that will go down in history, there is an equal number of films we wish we could erase from our memories.

I kid, I kid, but I’m also kind of serious. When someone mentions Tyler Perry, it’s only fair to think of him dressing up in old lady drag, bible thumping, and moralizing about how women shouldn’t open their legs for any good looking dude like they are a 24-hour Golden Corral. (Seriously, did you see Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor? Way to send a message to women that if they are not faithful, they’re going to get AIDS and everyone will hate them. Ugh!)
But here’s the thing: Ty Ty isn’t the owner of these kinds of movie tropes, so it’s about time we stop acting like it and recognize other movies that rely on these storytelling motifs. For example:

Hopefully you got all of your exercising in last month because October is determined to plant your ass in a theater seat for days on end. It’s our entry point into what we lovingly know as “Awards Season,” but there’s plenty here beyond prestige pics. The variety is commendable, from movies that have no business seeing a podium to slick future contenders to films too good for Oscar. Let’s look for the movies with the most potential to be great. We can even look for Ben Affleck’s missing wife while we’re at it. 10. Left Behind Opens October 3rd Nic Cage battling the Book of Revelation come to life? Yes, please. “What is this fucking music?” is the very first thing I wrote in my notebook while watching Left Behind. Two pages later, I wrote again, “No, seriously, what is this fucking music?” Indiscriminately scored to what appears to be the soundtrack from an '80s infomercial, and directed with all the nuance that suggests, the early scenes of Left Behind quickly cement its place in the Bad Movie Hall of Fame. But it’s the later scenes, when the plot becomes thoroughly unhinged, that the movie enters another plane altogether. Adapted from Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins’s best-selling evangelical novels about the end times, Left Behind is biblical in its silliness.Cage plays Rayford Steele, a semi-philandering airplane pilot who has been making eyes at the stewardesses (and one curvy blonde one in particular, played by Nicky Whelan) ever since his wife Irene (Lea Thompson) discovered Jesus and...

It's a battle of the R-rated thrillers at the box office this week, and though both Gone Girl and Annabelle are tracking similarly, it looks like David Fincher's literary adaptation may have an edge in both the short and long term. The Christian-themed action pic Left Behind also opens in under 2,000 theaters, and, as with most faith-based releases, its success or failure is somewhat of a wildcard. Industry tracking can never seem to get a solid handle on the Christian market. Here's how things might play out. 1. Gone Girl — $25 million David Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's whodunnit...

<< Continued from "Weekend Forecast"At the domestic box office, at least, Gone Girl will face stiff competition from Annabelle, which opens at 3,185 locations. The movie's biggest selling point is the fact that it's a prequel to 2013 horror sensation The Conjuring (it shows the origin story of that movie's creepy doll). That movie opened to $41.9 million last July, then held well on its way to a $137.4 million total. It has had a robust post-theatrical life as well, and currently has a strong 7.5 rating on IMDb (in comparison, Insidious and Sinister both have a 6.8 rating).Aside from highlighting the Conjuring connection ("Before The Conjuring, there was Annabelle"), marketing has attempted to highlight Annabelle's scares by showing audience reactions during the movie. While that's an effective strategy, it can't completely make up for the fact that Annabelle doesn't seem to have any moments on par with the clap game from The Conjuring.Annabelle...

“Please do not bring unbelievers to this movie,” the Anti-Christ is quoted as saying on the Facebook page for “Left Behind,” the Nicolas Cage thriller about the Biblical Rapture that opens nationwide Friday. It's hard to say at this point, but it appears Satan is going to get his wish. “Left Behind,” a remake of the 2001 film starring Kirk Cameron, is expected to draw a mainly Christian crowd this weekend when it rolls out in 1,785 theaters. An opening in the $10 million range would be heavenly, according to Mark Borde, distribution chief at Freestyle Releasing. Also read: ‘Gone Girl’ Advance Sales.

Growing Pains: Armstrong’s Re-hash of Christian Agenda Hardly Rapturous
The end of times is here again with Left Behind, heralded by the presence of Nicolas Cage as a faithless pilot, sputtering about in the continued Humpty Dumpty phase of his grimacing career. For those who don’t know, this is the first chapter in a series of books by Timothy Lahaye, the evangelical Christian author, and was initially made into a cheapie film back in 2000 starring scion of all things ‘common sensical,’ Kirk Cameron. Time and greater talents were unable to aid the material in any discernable sense, however. This latest attempt was helmed by Vic Armstrong (a stunt man whose last notable directorial feature was the 1993 Dolph Lundren film, Army of One), and it seems this type of ideological fantasy is unable to divorce itself from floundering in skimpy productions that compromise technical integrity in favor of its belabored,...

Gone Girl heralds the beginning of Oscar season, and hopefully proof adult dramas can still draw at the box office. The rumored budget here is $50 million, pretty efficient, and there's a lot of value for your money, almost 2.5 hours worth of creepiness. Factor in that sparkly 86 percent RottenTomatoes number and I think you've got a film that will draw. My closest comparison is Captain Phillips, another "serious" movie with a known leading man that came out in October. Thus, my $27 million call. However, if I've somehow underestimated the book audience (would they really clamor for this on opening weekendc) or the marketing efforts, well, then this could hit $40 million. I suppose I'm just betting that longish R-rated adult dramas will always be a slow burn at the box office. Annabelle is the next film on the board, another R-rated effort, this time of the horror variety. Could this do Carrie numbersc Sinisterc I say better.

“Left Behind,” a Rapture disaster movie opening Friday, has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer and production values that verge on parody. Intended for a broad audience, it's best appreciated by the most ardently faithful. Where HBO's post-departure series “The Leftovers” is moody and enigmatic, “Left Behind” is heavy-handed and overt. There is no mistaking the Christian messaging behind this remake of 2000's direct-to-dvd movie starring Kirk Cameron, based on Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins’ bestselling series: Biblical scriptures abound; characters warn about the need to be ready for the apocalypse. “God knows everything,” a persistent traveler tells journalist Buck.

From what's been revealed thus far, Left Behind appears to have two key qualities of a classic Nicolas Cage film: All the dialogue is either whispered or screamed, and everything in the movie is on fire. But in case that wasn't enough to attract audiences, the film's promotional campaign has enlisted the help of the prince of evil whose entire world is on fire—Satan. Opening this Friday, Oct. 3, Left Behind tells the story of the biblical Rapture, in which millions of people have disappeared. Remaining groups of survivors attempt to recover from the ensuing chaos, including a pilot played by Cage,...

There are few things for an entertainment journalist more weirdly exciting than getting a quote on a movie's marketing materials. The notification email brings with it a rush of weird emotions including but not limited to happiness, pride, nervousness and uncomfort at the weird ethical gray area between critic and marketing aide. Many of us have felt it before, and now, we can add a new brother-in-arms: Satan. The Prince of Darkness was officially given the thumbs up earlier this month, and now has a pull quote on the Left Behind poster. Check it out for yourself, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Created by God along with a whole bunch of angels, Satan originally lived in Heaven, but after a pretty serious falling out, he decided to move down to Hell with some of his buddies, whom he promptly renamed demons. Despite some issues with the weather, they all seem...

On October 3, "Left Behind" hits theaters because there is literally nothing Hollywood won't reboot at this point. The new version of this trek into The Rapture stars Nicolas Cage as the hapless hero trying to navigate a world gone mad, instead of Kirk Cameron. With all the "worthy" people teleported off planet by the millions, everyone else must muddle through seven years of tribulations until the final stand-off between God and Satan. So how does the Devil himself feel about this portrayal about the coming End Times? "Left Behind" went to the source himself for a pull quote. Seriously. Image Credit: Left Behind / Via BuzzFeed But that seems so short-sighted! There are hundreds of other deities and demigods who no doubt have feelings about this film. I went straight to source to soundbites from five of them, representing a swatch of intersectional faiths from around the globe (and beyond!) #1 - Obviously,...

No surprise here, The Equalizer came out to win this weekend earning an estimated $35 million. We know that Denzel Washington can carry most any movie, but a TV show that few people know that this movie was based on is pretty impressive. This is his Washington’s best box office debut since 2012’s Safe House.
The Maze Runner fell to second place this weekend, just beating out the other newcomer this weekend, The Boxtrolls. The Boxtrolls opened in third place with an estimated $17.2 million which is a nice opening for a stop motion movie. Sadly the genre is not a big earner but usually a winner with audience who watch the gems.
Next week: Annabelle, Gone Girl, Left Behind (2014)
Title Weekend Total 1. Neighbors $51,070,000 $51 2. Amazing Spider-Man 2 $37,200,000 $147.9 3. The Other Woman $9,250,000 $65.7 4. Heaven is for Real $7,000,000 $75.2 5. Captain America 2 $5,619,000 $224.9 6. Rio 2 $5,125,000 $113.1 7. Mom’s Night Out $4,200,000 $4.2 8. Legends of Oz $3,705,000 $3.7 9. Divergent $1,700,000 $145 10. Brick Mansions $1,480,000 $18.3

Christian comic book publisher Kingstone Media has stepped out of its comfort zone recently with their release of the graphic novel version of faith-based horror film The Remaining. Although the company has printed original stories before outside of its historical and Biblical accounts, the move pushes the proverbial envelope even further. Casey La Scala's vision of the Rapture differs from what we've ever seen before through the entertaining, yet relatively sanitized, Left Behind and Revelation Road movies.
It's a truly horrific vision of a world crumbling quickly in the aftermath of a supernatural event that ushers in seven years of terrible Tribulation and unleashes a dark presence bent on eliminating any glimmer of spiritual hope that arises out of the ashes of Armageddon. Writer Roland Mann and artist Kyle Hotz's handiwork perfectly accents and extends in illustrated form what we're served on the silver screen.

Well, that was anti-climactic.
After a week of waiting for Big Brother‘s highly anticipated Rewind twist to be revealed to the houseguests, Wednesday’s live broadcast featured a whole lot of filler content, yet no real results.
That’s right: No one was evicted, no one was crowned Head of Household (yet) and no one could understand most of what Caleb was saying throughout the hour. But there are still some highlights to discuss, so let’s have at it.

CBS is loving Stephen King and they decided to capture the whole end of the world market. Thus they ordered a pilot for Stephen King’s short story The Things They Left Behind. The story follows a pair of very different investigators who must help the dead wrap up their issues. Think of a hybrid of Ghost Whisper and Left Behind. Greg Berlanti and Seth Grahame-Smith are behind the pilot production. No word on when fans can expect to see it, except 2015 is a likely target if they do air it.
The show sounds like it could be an interesting one. At least it isn’t zombie based by the sounds of it. I am just not sure how CBS will like it since it really isn’t anything new to CBS. The show between former CBS shows and what they have CW, it seems like just a quick way to gain some attention.

Nintendo has officially announced the upcoming Dlc for Mario Kart 8, showing that even though they're somewhat new to the Dlc game, they're definitiely doing it right. On top of a plethora of new characters (from some of your favorite Nintendo franchises), a total of 16 new tracks are coming as well, equaling up to half of what the original game brought! Best of all, it's coming at a price point that's well worth it. Come inside for all the details.
To be entirely honest, I'm not big on Dlc. Unless it added something new to the story and gameplay (like Batman: Arkham City, or The Last of Us: Left Behind), I haven't cared. New maps or weapons aren't all that exciting to me, because the content in those feel so light, despite coming in at $15 a piece. So it's a pleasant surprise that Nintendo is giving fans nearly a full damn...
