Lee Chang-dong set Cannes ablaze in 2018 with the uneasily beautiful “Burning,” a loose Haruki Murakami adaptation about the folie à troix between an alienated delivery man (Ah-in Yoo), the wily young woman (Jong-seo Jun) he covets, and the handsome charisma machine who blows them apart. The South Korean director’s sixth film made history as Korea’s first to make the International Feature Oscar shortlist (it wasn’t nominated) but is perhaps best remembered for two scenes: the woman, Haemi (Jun), dancing topless for them to the tune of Miles Davis’ “Elevator to the Gallows” soundtrack, and for its abruptly violent ending involving murder and arson in the nude. Then, there’s a missing cat that may have never existed — pure Murakami.
“Burning” remains a new classic of the 2010s, an elusive portrait of loneliness and desire that never spills on its narrative secrets. It grossed an impressive $718,000 at the U.

Ereban: Shadow Legacy is further proof that 2024 is the year of the AA game, following on from other fun surprises like Helldivers 2 and Outcast: A New Beginning. This third person stealth platformer takes inspiration from titles like Splatoon and Prince of Persia, with a hint of Assassin’s Creed sprinkled in there for good measure.
Created by Baby Robot Games is a young indie studio from Spain, the game puts a unique spin on an amalgamation of borrowed genre tropes to create something fun and cool to look at. Considering this is the developer’s debut game, it is seriously impressive and could well make its way on to the most underrated games of 2024 list at the end of the year.

Children of the Sun is a pulpy fever dream developed by one man and published by Devolver Digital. If you took Suda 51’s Killer7, and combined it with Sniper Elite, SuperHot and Mandy, then you’d end up with something resembling René Rother’s Children of the Sun. It works beyond just being a dynamic piece of visual art too, containing some extremely satisfying gameplay that feels crunchy and tactile.
Children of the Sun is out now for PC.
Let’s just get the discussion of the game’s visuals out of the way first, because Children of the Sun is truly striking to look at. In terms of its presentation, it resembles a particularly nasty 70s grindhouse movie that has been thoroughly soaked in bleach. It is extremely stylish, at times reminding me a lot of the visual flair seen in El Paso, Elsewhere.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a productivity toolkit for gamified productivity sessions. It is an application aimed at individuals who want to enhance their productivity or who experience trouble focusing on work.
It offers various tools to make one’s work session more productive, such as LoFi beats with ambient sounds, work timers, To-Do lists, etc. These tools aren’t pathbreaking; most readers might have heard about them. However, the application’s Usp lies in allowing users to use all of these tools or just one of them. It made my work a lot more fun than it is otherwise.
Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has visuals that make it seem almost identical to the typical LoFi productivity videos broadcast on YouTube. However, it offers a lot more depth. But does it possess more substance and value than just coupling a LoFi playlist with a piece of paper?

Modern co-op games are often manifestations of a troubled mind. There are few instances where these games know exactly who they are (with a few broken bits), and at some point, devs and designers manage to fix it. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case with Ascendant Infinity, an online co-op title being developed by PlayFusion.
At its foundations, Ascendant Infinity is a competitive co-op title that mixes PvE elements with 3v3v3v3 gunplay. The developers have tried convincing players that the game has everything you’d need for an adrenaline-filled first-person shooter experience that doesn’t take itself seriously. Well, that’s unfortunate, because I hope the makers of this game take it seriously and fix its core problems.
At the time of writing, the Closed Beta version of the game is live between April 5 and 6.

The anxiety of something as adrenaline-inducing as Russian Roulette lies in its unpredictable circumstances. It’s almost ironic how a game of pure luck can grow increasingly thrilling even though nothing is truly in your control. Except, in the case of Buckshot Roulette, luck is merely an illusion. The game’s immaculate design and choice of themes fool you into believing you’re in control, yet gives you ample choice over how things go.
In my time playing through the indie table-top horror game that originally came from itch.io, I found myself at the edge of my seat, breaking my head over every possible ‘right’ decision I could take for my character. This may seem like a paradox because, at the start Buckshot Roulette, a shotgun and a couple of rounds in it decide my fate before I can make sense of why I’m even doing this to myself.

South Park: Snow Day follows on from The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole, although that is not immediately obvious at first glance. This is because a pretty drastic design change has been implemented this time around, taking things from the 2D realm into 3D. It also places a multiplayer co-op mentality first and foremost across all of the game’s core mechanics, which again seems like a strange departure.
Fortunately, despite these arguably unwelcome changes, there is still fun to be had here. The question is; are there enough of these fun moments to smooth over the drastic departures from past games for fans to get on board?
South Park: Snow Day releases on March 26th for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
When it was announced that the next South Park game would employ a 3D visual aesthetic, it had me scratching my head.

Much of the long-term success of the South Park series rests on the shoulders of its often crude humor and biting satire. That’s something that spilled over into the last two mainline South Park games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole. While they looked on the surface like South Park-skinned RPGs, both offered innovative gameplay alongside the satiric bite we’ve come to expect from South Park. Not so with South Park: Snow Day!, a repetitive 3D co-op beat ‘em up that brings nothing new to the genre.
It doesn’t help that Snow Day! seems aimed exclusively at franchise fans. Whereas The Stick of Truth re-introduced and built upon many of the fantasy alter-egos of the main cast introduced in episodes of South Park that parodied The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, Snow Day is mostly content to rehash familiar jokes tied to,...

Paramount+ opened the floodgates to purge content from its streaming platform last week when it removed Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game, Queens of the Universe, and Star Trek: Prodigy.
Deadline reported Monday that all five seasons of Inside Amy Schumer had been banished from the service, with no telling whether the show will return at another destination.
Also removed is Tell Me a Story, which was canceled after two seasons in 2020.
The anthology from Kevin Williamson had previously been leased to The CW to help shore up its schedule during the pandemic.
Blood & Treasure, which began its life as a CBS original before being placed on a multi-year hiatus to return on Paramount+ before being canceled, has also been removed.

Inside Amy Schumer returned to Paramount+ after six years for its fifth season – a season that Paramount was hoping could score an Emmy nomination to compete against the likes of SNL and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
However, Emmy voters hoping to take a last minute watch on Paramount+ before tonight’s voting deadline will have been disappointed after it was one of the latest titles to be scrapped from the streaming service.
Paramount+ has purged a phalanx of programming today including a number of original series, original movies and Nickelodeon content.

When Oscar-winning animation director Mark Andrews (“Brave”) called his old Pixar pal Alex Mandel about his latest gig, “Super Giant Robot Brothers,” Mandel was 6,700 miles away in New Zealand managing projects for visual effects house Weta Digital.
Mandel, whose other creative side happens to be classically trained composer, dove into Andrews’ new project and created more than three hours of music for the series now airing on Netflix.
“Super Giant Robot Brothers” is a 3D animated action-comedy from Reel FX about massive metal robots destined to save the world from invading kaiju – giant monsters from space – while trying to overcome their own sibling rivalry. Andrews, a drummer who used to jam with guitarist Mandel at Pixar events, suggested the musical style: synthwave.
Synthwave combines heavy metal with ’80s synthpop, adding ’90s production elements for a retro-meets-modern approach that reminded Andrews of the Japanese animated series he watched as a kid.

Hulu has released an official trailer for “The Girl From Plainville” — a limited series inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s “texting suicide” case.
Based on Jesse Barron’s Esquire article of the same name, “The Girl From Plainville” dives into Carter’s (Elle Fanning) relationship with Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan) and his following death, which led to her conviction of involuntary manslaughter.
“All he thought about was dying… I really just wanted to help him,” says Fanning’s Carter in the gripping trailer, which is full of unsettling text messages and moments both following and leading up to Roy’s death.
In addition to Fanning and Ryan, the series also stars Chloë Sevigny as Lynn Roy, Cara Buono as Gail Carter, Kai Lennox as David Carter and Norbert Leo Butz as Conrad Roy II.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Menahan Street Band, an all-star Brooklyn collective featuring members of Budos Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and Charles Bradley’s backing band, have announced their first album in nearly a decade.
The Exciting Sounds of Menahan Street Band, available to preorder now via Daptone Records ahead of its February 26th, 2021 release date, is preceded by the arrival of the album’s first single and opening track “Midnight Morning.” The laid-back track — like the Menahan Street Band’s output in general — seamlessly fuses elements of funk, R&b, hip-hop, and rock into an instrumental stew.

New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.
While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.
From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Steven Universe Future Episode 8 Review
Lapis has had the most compelling arc of Steven Universe’s cast. While Steven, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl have all gotten meaty storylines that have taken up much of the show’s lengthy run, Lapis’ story has managed to be the most compelling even with only a handful of episodes fully dedicated to it. Seeing her go from an abuse victim to confronting her abuser to learning to live with Peridot, Lapis has covered a lot of ground across the series with so little time.
I’ve written before about the exemplary treatment of Lapis and this episode, like ‘Snow Day’ did with Steven, brilliantly let’s us check in on how much she’s grown. Lapis...

Corey Davis, game director of “Rocket League,” added some insight to a Reddit thread Thursday, in which fans of the popular game were discussing the fall from 36,000 players on average in 2017 to 27,000 this year, according to data from Steamcharts.
While the original post that started the thread was about suggested changes the game should make to bring back players, Davis commented and offered perspective, encouraging fans to take a look at the bigger picture. Psyonix, the developer and publisher of “Rocket League,” aims to build the game as a 10-plus year franchise that players will continue to play for years to come, and Davis assures that “short-term trends on one platform or another don’t change that.”
Davis also noted that many long-term strong titles such as “Team Fortress 2” and “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” have had phases of reduced popularity, which he says is the “reality” of long-lived multiplayer games.
