Chicago – The painting “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer” was created by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, and was considered Austria’s greatest artwork. The remarkable journey of the painting, stolen from its original Jewish family by the Nazis during World War II, is the basis for the new film, “Woman in Gold,” directed by Simon Curtis.
“Woman in Gold” is based on the true story of Maria Altmann (portrayed in the film by Helen Mirren), a Viennese immigrant in the United States who fought the Austrian government for rightful claim to her family’s paintings in the 1990s, including the famous gold leaf portrait of her Aunt Adele. Altmann brings in an American lawyer named Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to act as her lawyer, and their years of litigation to make this art restitution was one of the most high profile of these cases. The film includes flashbacks of the family in Vienna during those war years,...

Theatre lovers, rejoice! Emma Stone will make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret at Studio 54 in New York City tonight. (Yes, the same theater where Shia Labeouf got arrested earlier this year.) In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stone said she “can’t believe this is actually happening.” We can; Stone is one of many A-list movie stars to take their acting talents to the Great White Way. However, how will she fair?
From a list of mega-stars that made the Broadway jump before her, it’s anyone’s game. Reviews of celebrities on Broadway have ranged from stellar (surprisingly, Ashlee Simpson makes this category for her turn as Roxie Hart in Chicago) to downright dreadful (let’s not talk about Christie Brinkley’s portrayal of the same role).

The last time Bradley Cooper was on Broadway, in 2006’s Three Days of Rain, the news was all about his co-star Julia Roberts, who made the play an instant sellout despite mixed reviews. But Cooper has since broken through as a major Hollywood name, and the results are evident in the opening-weekend box office of The Elephant Man. The 1977 Bernard Pomerance play, a passion project that Cooper has pursued since his graduate days at the Actors Studio Drama School, played its first previews at the Booth Theatre over the weekend. The play, co-starring Patricia Clarkson and Alessandro Nivola, made

Bradley Cooper took a bow alongside his costars for the first preview curtain call for Broadway’s The Elephant Man at the Booth Theatre on Friday.
Bradley Cooper In 'The Elephant Man'
In The Elephant Man, Cooper plays the main character John, based off of the late 19th century sideshow performer Joseph Merrick, who suffered from severe deformities. Instead of donning prosthetics or makeup, Cooper transforms into the part by contorting his clean-shaven face and using breathing techniques.
“For me, it just starts with the breath and then it sort of just happens,” the actor said during a Today show appearance.
Landing the lead in The Elephant Man has been something of a career-long dream for the 39-year-old actor. David Lynch’s 1980 film, starring John Hurt inspired Cooper to become an actor.

Yes, they can. Both of them. And that includes James Franco. When big stars make their Broadway debuts, especially those big stars who don't have much of a theater pedigree, the first question has to be: “So, can they act? On stage?” Since the disappointment of Julia Roberts’ Broadway debut (“Three Days of Rain,” 2006, preceded even more infamously by Madonna's 1988 debut, in “Speed-the-Plow”), movie stars have acquitted themselves quite well on old Broadway. Bradley Cooper is returning to the stage! The 39-year-old Oscar-nominated American Hustle star will reprise the titular role in The Elephant Man on Broadway this fall, EW reports. Cooper's return to the play will mark his first time on Broadway since 2006 when he costarred with Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd in Three Days of Rain. Cooper is set to play John Merrick, The Elephant Man's main character, a man with a deformed body but an unbroken spirit. The character famously says the line, "I am not an animal!" to reassert his humanity to those who would only judge him by his appearance. Cooper previously played the same role in a 2012 production at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Patricia...

Bradley Cooper will star as The Elephant Man in a Broadway revival of the play.
The American Hustle actor, who last week received his second Oscar nomination in as many years, will return to the New York stage after eight years. He last starred in 2006′s Three Days of Rain with Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Cooper will play the deformed Elephant Man (aka John Merrick) without makeup or prosthetics. He will imply the character's deformity through physicality.

Los Angeles, March 4: Oscar winning actress Julia Roberts compares acting on stage to giving birth to a child, but at the same time she admits one can't stay away from it.
The 44-year-old, who made her Broadway debut in 2006 with "Three Days of Rain" and is planning to return to the stage, says performing live isn't easy.
"Stage acting is like childbirth, you don't know until you've done it, but you get a little bit away from it and you go, 'Of course I want to do that again'," showbizspy.com quoted Roberts as saying.
"You get sucked back into doing theatre because it's really thrilling and does challenge you.

"Stage acting is like childbirth, you don't know until you've done it, but you get a little bit away from it and you go, 'Of course I want to do that again'," showbizspy.com quoted Roberts as saying.

Washington, Mar 3: Julia Roberts has said that acting on stage is like childbirth because it is easy to forget the bad parts of the experience.
The 'Mirror Mirror' star, who made her Broadway debut in 2006 with 'Three Days of Rain', plans to return to theatre.
"It's like childbirth, you don't know until you've done it but you get a little bit away from it and you go, 'Of course I want to do that again'. You get sucked back into doing theatre because it's really thrilling and does challenge you as an actor in really unique ways," Contactmusic quoted her as telling Vanity Fair magazine.
"You know, I love the medium of film, I love that environment but it's just different.
"I really enjoyed doing 'Three Days.

Us actor whose success as the scruffy TV detective Columbo was complemented by a wide range of stage and screen roles
Show-business history records that the American actor Peter Falk, who has died aged 83, made his stage debut the year before he left high school, presciently cast as a detective. Despite the 17-year-old's fleeting success, he had no thoughts of pursuing acting as a career – if only because tough kids from the Bronx considered it an unsuitable job for a man. Just 24 years later, Falk made his first television appearance as the scruffy detective, Columbo, not only becoming the highest paid actor on television – commanding $500,000 an episode during the 1970s – but also the most famous.
Inevitably the lieutenant dedicated to unravelling the villainy of the wealthy and glamorous dominated his career, although – unlike some actors – he escaped the straitjacket, or in his case shabby raincoat, of typecasting. In addition to stage work,...

Subject: Colin Firth, 50-year old English actor
Date of Assessment: March 30, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Underrated, mainstream
Negative Buzzwords: Stiff, posh, bore
The Case: The good news, as accurately declared by Colin Firth in his recent (Best Actor) Oscar acceptance speech, is that his career really has just peaked. The bad news, however, is that in the event of a career peak, a downward slide might be inevitable. In the best case scenario, it is entirely possible Firth could parlay his Oscar win into more exposure for the sorts of roles that he's played before and for which he hasn't yet received proper recognition.
Most of us know Firth as the quintessential Englishman and for good reason. He's quite notorious for his straight-out-of-the-novel portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the six-episode miniseries Pride and Prejudice, in which he performed the classic Regency version of a one-man wet t-shirt contest. Indeed, there's something strange...

Obsessed with Film met up with Limitless star Bradley Cooper a couple of weeks back to talk performance enhancing drugs, attaining perfection and the perils of drinking human blood. Ed Whitfield popped a chat pill and in an illuminating discussion found out that Cooper’s character wasn’t planning to steal the moon but his alter ego may be stalking Robert De Niro.
Now read on… (we talk extensively about major plot points in Limitless, so beware of spoilers)…
Bradley Cooper used to be a nobody, just like you and I, well, I. Then he took a drug called “exposure” and suddenly he was a star, bright eyed, being paid more money than he ever expected to see in his life and filling our minds with beautiful memories from movies like The Hangover and The A-Team.

Julia Roberts poked fun at her pal Paul Rudd's lack of Irish ancestry on Thursday, February 24 as she presented the actor with an award from the U.S.-Irish Alliance. The "I Love You, Man" star was named as the recipient of the organization's 2011 Honorary Irishman title and he was feted at the Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film event in Los Angeles.
Roberts made a surprise appearance at the prize giving to pay tribute to Rudd, her co-star in a 2006 Broadway production of "Three Days of Rain", and she made the audience chuckle by joking about the actor's heritage.
Pointing out that Rudd was actually born to Jewish immigrants from England, she told the crowd, "This is so crazy, really, Paul Rudd - Paul McRudd - is Jewish, not Irish! Maybe I can become Irish. My middle name is Fiona, which is a step closer to...

Paul Rudd was joined by his wife, Julie Yaeger, on the green carpet before the Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film gala in La. The comedian, who wasn't born in Ireland and isn't Irish, was presented with the "Honorary Irishman" award by Julia Roberts. Paul and Julia, who often supports her friends in the business, became close when starring in Three Days of Rain on Broadway in 2006. Paul took the stage to accept the honor, saying, "I am so grateful, I am honored, I am humbled . . . And I'm Irish." It was another star-studded event hosted by the Us-Ireland Alliance, after last year's brought out Tom Cruise to salute his pal J.J. Abrams. Mad Men's Jon Hamm was in the audience to support Paul, as was new dad Orlando Bloom. Jon kept the party rounds going by also hitting a Grey Goose bash with Leonardo DiCaprio. View Slideshow...

After notching up impressive performances on stage and on TV, Lyndsey Marshal is hitting the big time – thanks to Clint Eastwood
When Lyndsey Marshal told her mum she was going to be in a play about climate change at the National theatre, she wasn't impressed. "She said, 'Oh God, I can't think of anything more boring,'" Marshal says. "I knew what she meant. There's nothing worse than people working all day, and then coming to the theatre to watch that."
From this week, however, that's exactly what large numbers of people will be doing, if all goes according to plan for Greenland. Four writers – Moira Buffini, Penelope Skinner, Matt Charman and Jack Thorne – have spent six months researching issues thrown up by climate change. The result is a series of interconnected stories for a cast of 15: Thorne's concerns a man who has been counting guillemots in Alaska since the 1970s; Charman's story,...

Colin Firth suffers from "appalling" stage fright. The actor in "The King's Speech", who stars as King George VI, a famous stutterer in the Top Hooper-directed project, reveals the last time he starred in the Donmar Warehouse Theatre in "Three Days of Rain" he locked himself in the toilet to get over his nerves.
"Yes I do suffer from those fears and I had appalling stage fright the last time I went on stage," Colin told Bang Showbiz when discussing the similarities between him and the former British monarch. "We'd only had two weeks rehearsal, hadn't had a proper dress rehearsal, we were at the Donmar, there were no prompters, and I had to open with a two page monologue."
"I locked myself in the toilet before the performance. I wasn't planning to stay there, I just thought, take a deep breath and remember your first line, and I couldn't.

The London theatre world's brightest stars will gather this Sunday for the 2010 Olivier awards – the West End's version of the Oscars. Here are our top tips
Unlike its glitzier cousin across the pond, the Oliviers, held at the Grosvenor House hotel, have never attracted much interest at the bookies. In fact, I'm not sure you could bet on them if you wanted to. Still, in the spirit of fun, here's my shot at some betting punditry on the nominations.
First up, the sure things. My banker is Mark Rylance in the best actor category for his turn in Jerusalem. He's a shoo-in for the award, which is a shame for the others in a strong category (Jude Law, Samuel West and James Earl Jones among others), but it should result in an entertaining awards speech from the famously eccentric performer.
Rachel Weisz is almost as much of a dead cert...

Director Garry Marshall cast Topher Grace opposite Anne Hathaway in new movie "Valentine's Day" after the actress confessed to a teenage crush on the "That '70s Show" star. The "Pretty Woman" 's filmmaker landed a star-studded line-up for his latest release, including Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper.
Marshall admits onscreen chemistry between the actors was key to the casting, but he was sure Hathaway would hit it off with Grace immediately - because she's harbored feelings for the former TV star for years. He says, "Julia Roberts... Bradley Cooper, she did a play ('Three Days of Rain') on Broadway with him, 98 performances, they must have gotten along! We matched up."
