Oscar nominees Kodi Smit-McPhee and Djimon Hounsou are set to star in claustrophobic thriller “The Zealot.”
The two-hander, being introduced to buyers in Cannes by WestEnd Films, comes from director Vadim Perelman working from a screenplay by Bennett Fisher, and touches on themes involving privilege, paranoia, and the assumptions we make about one another.
“The Zealot” follows Hassan, a Somali-American airport shuttle driver in Minneapolis, who is struggling to make ends meet. When Lloyd, a stranded twentysomething at the airport, offers to pay Hassan to take him overland to Chicago, it seems worth the risk. But as the realization grows that his passenger is not what he seems, Hassan finds he is trapped in a terrifying ride which he can’t escape from, knowing that to save himself might put countless others in danger.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s turn in Bullet Train has led to theories he’s going to play Bond next. But do actors who play Bond-like characters go on to actually play 007? We take a look.
At the time of writing, at least, there’s much speculation about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his connection to the James Bond franchise. In March, a British newspaper with a big red masthead spread the rumour that the actor is secretly being lined up to play 007, taking over from Daniel Craig.
It’s a rumour so persistent that Taylor-Johnson has started to get a bit cross when ‘The Bond Question’ is brought up in interviews. When asked by an Associated Press reporter about the whole matter, Taylor-Johnson looked down at his feet, as though trying to repress some terrifying wellspring of anger, before abruptly marching off with a chirpy, “Alright, have a good one!”

The Avenue has landed North American rights to the action comedy “Old Guy,” starring Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu and Cooper Hoffman.
Simon West directed the film, while “The Last Son” scribe Greg Johnson penned the script.
The film follows aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Waltz), who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of club manager Anata (Liu), Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back in the field — but it’s only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg (Hoffman), a prodigy assassin with an attitude. The mismatched pair is asked to eliminate top members of a competing crime syndicate and, in the process, uncover their employer’s true motive: removing the old guard in a full takeover. However, The Company didn’t anticipate that Danny’s experience, coupled with Wihlbord’s brilliance, could enable them...

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

In the world of movies and TV shows, there are countless adaptations that have been made from popular novels and biographical works. But these forms of entertainment have also been inspired by and adapted from some of the biggest video games, which don't get nearly as much attention as they should. In 2023, HBO's acclaimed series "The Last of Us," based on the Sony action-adventure game franchise of the same name, broke viewership records and became the most-watched show in the history of the streaming platform in Europe and Latin America, per the Associated Press.
Along with television series, video-game-to-movie adaptations have also grown in popularity among audiences, with the star-studded "The Super Mario Bros." movie, adapted from the beloved game franchise by Nintendo, being the second-highest grossing film of 2023 so far, as reported by Insider. One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander is finally ready to share her thoughts about Lara Croft’s future and the disappointment of watching plans for another chance to play the character go up in smoke. MGM sold the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon Prime Video last summer, effectively killing Vikander’s chance to star in a sequel to her 2018 reboot. Rather than make a sequel to Roar Uthaug’s film, Prime Video is teaming up with writer and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge for a TV series. Amazon wants to turn Tomb Raider into an expansive franchise. While plans for the television reboot remain a mystery, Vikander is not involved.
Speaking with Variety, Vikander told the outlet she’s grateful for the chance to have played such an iconic character and would not rule out returning if asked.

West directs and produces the feature, which was written by Greg Johnson (The Son) and recently wrapped in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where it was filmed on location, with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Highland Film Group is co-financing the action comedy and handling worldwide rights.
Old Guy follows aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Waltz), who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of club manager Anata (Liu), Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back into the field, but only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg (Hoffman), a prodigy assassin with an attitude.

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we look back at the birth of a new Bond in the opening moments of 2006's "Casino Royale.")
It may be hard for some to remember now, especially in light of the downright schmaltzy ending the character received in "No Time To Die," but Daniel Craig's James Bond wasn't always given the red carpet treatment as if he were the homecoming hero for the ages. In the early 2000s, the rough-cut blonde was largely an unproven talent who was mostly familiar to audiences for a bit role in Steven Spielberg's "Munich," his leading turn in Matthew Vaughn's "Layer Cake," and an appearance in 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." Without the benefit of an established history to his name, diehards and general audiences alike...

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez is not only “a boss” onscreen while portraying Sofia in “Loot” but offscreen as well.
In a new interview with Variety, the actress explains why the Apple TV+ comedy series doesn’t reveal whether her character is trans or cis.
Rodriguez, who is a proud member of the trans community, notes that the decision to exclude the detail from the series, which she stars in alongside Maya Rudolph, was something she “did” discuss with the series creators.

Ken Jeong is known for taking big swings with his guesses on “The Masked Singer,” and this week is no different. But at least this time, he has some moral support from Oscar the Grouch.
Yes, Wednesday night’s episode brings quite a few guests to the show, including Oscar and his Sesame Street neighbors. That’s because he, Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and the gang all perform on the show too..
Competing on “The Masked Singer” this week is the reigning champ Squirrel — who Ken swore last week is Margot Robbie — along with new challengers Jackalope and Fairy. And Ken is already certain that Fairy is Angelina Jolie.
You can watch TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek of the episode in the video above.

German powerhouse Zdf Studios and U.K.-based Factual Fiction are reteaming for “#DorianGray,” an updated social media spin on Oscar Wilde’s classic, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”
In Wilde’s original, first published as a novella in 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, the self-besotted Dorian Gray sells his soul in exchange for eternal youth, a picture painted of him recording the decay of his soul as in outward appearance he remains physically forever young.
Currently being written by Maiya John, a young London-based screenwriter, the contemporary reimagining is described by Zdf Studios as “a suspenseful ride through the life of a teenager as they construct their identity.”
While navigating sex, and gender, mental health and consent, through tweets and #instagram and Tik Tok videos, Dorian Gray, as in Wilde’s central concept, projects an image of who he’d like to be, rather than who he really is.

Back in 1993, Hollywood had the shot of a lifetime. A shot at an opportunity to change the movie industry forever. They had all the ingredients: the rights to the highest-selling Nintendo video game and an untapped market greedy for more content. But they missed. The arrow didn’t even hit the board.

"Tomb Raider" is getting another remake by none other than "Fleabag" writer and actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will work behind the camera as both a scriptwriter and executive producer. Unlike its predecessors, the upcoming project from the "No Time to Die" actor will not be a movie (which fans have been used to over the years), but rather a series on Amazon. Originally based on the popular video-game franchise of the same name, "Tomb Raider" reached new heights and gained widespread popularity in 2001 after Angelina Jolie took on the role of protagonist Lara Croft in "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."
Since the success of the video game and first film, the Tomb Raider franchise has inspired many adaptations, including a sequel with Jolie, an updated solo film featuring Alicia Vikander, and several video games. Updated: Amazon Studios has tapped Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write a TV series as part of a potential Tomb Raider universe that would span television, film and games. According to sources, the TV series is in the works from the prolific Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve and writer on No Time To Die and Solo: A Star Wars Story, and she also could be involved in the potential movie. Dmitri Johnson from dj2, who had secured the rights to the IP, is overseeing the development of the franchise and producing.

Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is reportedly attached to write a new Tomb Raider TV series for Amazon.
Last summer, MGM reportedly missed the window to greenlight a Tomb Raider sequel, meaning the franchise was up for grabs.
The Hollywood Reporter now cites sources saying Waller-Bridge is writing and executive producing the latest iteration of Lara Croft as part of her overall deal with Amazon.
Waller-Bridge does not plan to star in the series, THR reports. The Independent has contacted Amazon Studios for comment.
The franchise is based on a video game series, which follows the pistol-wielding archaeologist-cum-adventurer Croft as she searches for lost artefacts.
It has previously spawned two film adaptations, first led by Angelina Jolie in 2001 and Alicia Vikander in 2018.
Vikander’s Tomb Raider was poorly received by critics and earned a lacklustre 275m (£228m) at the global box office, which is estimated to be roughly the figure the film needed to break even.

After starring in the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” it looks like Phoebe Waller-Bridge has developed a taste for treasure hunting. The Emmy-winning “Fleabag” creator is reportedly developing a TV series adaptation of the popular “Tomb Raider” video game series for Amazon, The Hollywood Reporter reported January 27.
The project comes as part of Waller-Bridge’s overall deal with Amazon, which she renewed earlier this month. The renewal also came with the news that she was adapting the book “Sign Here” by Claudia Lux into a series. Waller-Bridge will write the in-development project but reportedly won’t star as gun-toting adventurer Lara Croft. She executive produces with Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, former Amazon heads of comedy and drama and overall deals who launched their own studio but have an overall deal with Prime Video.
Amazon declined to comment on the news to IndieWire.

Aubrey Plaza is glad that Emily the Criminal was also not Emily the Gunslinger.
The “Emily the Criminal” star revealed that her favorite “really cool, kind of weird thing about the film” is that her titular character, despite committing crimes, does not use guns.
“I was kind of proud of that, because I don’t think you need guns,” Plaza said during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” earlier this week. “Most thrillers introduce guns, like, immediately…We don’t need guns in every movie.”
The “The White Lotus” Season 2 star continued, “I don’t think it’s like – it’s an unconscious thing, I think, for the audience to watch that movie and not even realize, like, ‘Oh, there’s no guns.’ But I think it actually makes it more, kind of, anxiety-inducing, because you’re like, ‘How is she going to take these guys down without a weapon like that?...

The history of video game cinema is littered with fascinating what-ifs when it comes to the movies that were never made. George A. Romero's "Resident Evil" and Gore Verbinski's "Bioshock" are the stuff of legend, while David O. Russell's vision for "Uncharted" — which was put into development back when Russell's name wasn't mud — was certainly a far cry from the final version of the film. If nothing else, it would have featured a whole lot less parkour.
Not as well-remembered but perhaps just as notable is Sam Raimi's "The Last of Us," a film that would've seen the "Evil Dead" and "Spider-Man" helmer try his hand at bringing directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann's touchstone post-apocalyptic survival horror video game to life on the big screen. Screen Gems and Raimi's Ghost House Pictures boarded the movie in March 2014, less than a year after the...

With the upcoming release of Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," there's no better time to discuss Daniel Craig's acting career. He was so magnetic in "Knives Out" that fans all but demanded a sequel -- leading Netflix to greenlight two Knives Out films for 400 million. Even before he (arguably) became the 21st century's preeminent James Bond, Craig had several impressive performances. Despite taking on the daunting role of 007, he escaped typecasting by continuously working with great material, directors, and castmates.
Craig's work -- especially post-"Casino Royale" -- generally falls into two categories: stoic and livewire. Over the years, he's played complicated heroes, despicable villains, and the occasional comic relief role. He's also been kicking around longer than you may think. Do you remember him as an evil German solider in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" or as Master Kane alongside a young Kate Winslet...

Harry Potter star Leslie Phillips has died aged 98.
The actor – best known for lending his voice to the Sorting Hat in the Jk Rowling franchise – died on Monday (7 November).
Phillips had been struggling with illness for some time and previously survived two strokes. After suffering a life-threatening stroke in 2015, he had been recovering at home in recent years.
In a statement, his wife Zara Carr, 63, remembered her husband as a “national treasure”.

Rodrigo Santoro – Hector in “Westworld,” Xerxes in “300”– leans forward in his chair during a Zoom interview almost touching the screen, such is his excitement. “It’s absolutely extraordinary, the accomplishment. What they did, what this man did. The mission seemed completely impossible.”
Santoro is talking about Ferdinand Magellan, whom he plays in Prime Video’s “Boundless,” directed by Simon West, also starring Alvaro Morte, the Professor in “Money Heist,” and Zdf Studios and Rtve’s banner title at this year’s Mipcom.
West calls the series his “passion project.” For anybody interested in the Age of Discovery, Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world, completed by Basque Juan Sebastián Elcano, is the voyage of voyages, the greatest feat in maritime history, writes historian Laurence Bergreen.
“Boundless” (“Sin limites”) is first and foremost, West insists, entertainment, here epic unflagging, historic adventure for the whole family. Rejected by Portugal’s Manuel 1, Magellan...

In 1995, Paul W.S. Anderson broke Hollywood's video game adaptation curse with "Mortal Kombat," which was a shining example of a video-game-based blockbuster that could spawn into a long-standing franchise. Riding high on the fresh success of "Mortal Kombat," Anderson decided to tackle yet another major game franchise that had a history of failed movie adaptations. Capcom's survival horror game series, "Resident Evil," offered ample material for a potentially riveting action-horror adaptation. Anderson, who was a fan of the game franchise, saw this potential and decided to add his own spin to the premise. The result was 2002's "Resident Evil," which birthed a six-installment franchise so far removed from the games that it developed a distinct identity of its own.
Despite the franchise's flaws, Anderson's "Resident Evil" films offer a unique survival horror/kinetic action experience. The films follow the amnesiac Alice (Milla Jovovich), a covert operative who battles the...

Aubrey Plaza isn’t a comedy star. Or an action star. Or a sarcastic sidekick. She’s simply, and forever will be, an artistic chameleon. But that’s redundant, isn’t it?
The actress spoke with “Emily the Criminal” co-star Theo Rossi during a SAG-AFTRA Foundation screening and Q&a moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn. Plaza, who has made headlines for drawing comparisons to “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” for her role in the credit card scam drama, addressed being typecast early in her career, especially coming off of hit sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” (Watch the panel in full below.)
“I don’t mind being typecast because I feel like I was so lucky to be on ‘Parks and Recreation,’ and that was one of my first really big jobs, and I am so heavily associated with that character,” Plaza said of famously playing scene-stealing sarcastic secretary April Ludgate. “I think...

Edgar Wright, casting agent?
After the “Shaun of the Dead” director mistook Aubrey Plaza’s recent MovieMaker magazine cover as a promo for “Tomb Raider” 3.0, Plaza herself has responded to the fan casting rumors.
“Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it,” Plaza told Newsweek. “It was so funny when he texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it.”
She continued, “I love action movies, and I don’t discriminate against big movies or small movies. I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That’s an iconic character. She’s the original badass.

Aubrey Plaza: certified action star and now, the next Lara Croft?
The “Emily the Criminal” actress-producer apparently was so convincing in the Sundance action-drama that pal and fellow filmmaker Edgar Wright thought she was cast in the newest “Tomb Raider” film. Plaza’s cover story for MovieMaker magazine and stern-faced, tank top-clad look is what led Wright to reach out.
“My friend Edgar Wright actually saw that and texted me and said, ‘Oh my god, you’re the new Lara Croft? You’re the new Tomb Raider?’ That’s the character in ‘Tomb Raider.’ And I was like, ‘No, Edgar. That’s my movie, ‘Emily the Criminal,'” Plaza shared during “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.”
Plaza added, “And he genuinely thought I was cast as the new ‘Tomb Raider.’ And then I looked it up and they actually are casting this role right now. And I was like,...
