The last film to be produced by ITC.
Cameron Diaz was billed as having a leading role in this film, even though she only appears for a few minutes in the opening scene. Many subsequent home video releases have gone on to feature her prominently in the cover.
James Spader also worked with Eric Stoltz on the previous year's 2 Days in the Valley (1996), and with Deborah Kara Unger on Crash (1996). Ironically, Crash has Spader and Unger playing a married couple, as is the case in Keys to Tulsa.
In an interview with James Spader and Eric Stoltz , Stoltz claimed that Spader was the reason he got cast in 2 Days in the Valley (1996), and that he in turn was the reason Spader got cast in Keys to Tulsa. In the interview, Spader said, "Eric just returned the favor with a movie we shot six months after '2 Days' called 'Keys to Tulsa.' He read the script and convinced the producer that I'd be great as a drug dealer."
Filmed in Texas, despite being set in Oklahoma.
