Emmanuelle Devos has had a special relationship with Arnaud Desplechin from her first film, La Vie Des Morts, with him as writer/director, on to La Sentinelle (a CinéSalon tribute to Caroline Champetier), My Sex Life... Or How I Got Into An Argument, Esther Kahn, Kings & Queen (Rois & Reine), and A Christmas Tale (Un Conte De Noël).
I met with Emmanuelle Devos at the French Institute Alliance Française (CinéSalon's Enigmatic Emmanuelle Devos) in New York for a conversation on Frédéric Mermoud's Moka, based on the novel by Tatiana de Rosnay in which she stars opposite Nathalie Baye with David Clavel, Olivier Chantreau, Diane Rouxel, and Samuel Labarthe.

Moka star Emmanuelle Devos at the start of our conversation at the French Institute Alliance Française, mentioned seeing Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon in Lillian Hellman's Little Foxes and Laurie Metcalf and Chris Cooper in Lucas Hnath's A Doll's House, Part 2 on Broadway. She has a long history with her first director, Arnaud Desplechin (My Sex Life... Or How I Got Into An Argument, Esther Kahn, A Christmas Tale, Kings & Queen), who also directed her son Raphaël Cohen in My Golden Days. Desplechin and Mathieu Amalric regular Grégoire Hetzel is Moka's co-composer. Emmanuelle and I had spoken at the Tribeca Film Festival with Jérôme Bonnell for his Le Temps De L'Aventure (Just A Sigh).

Those allergic to French film clichés should consider running in terror from My Golden Days. The hits are all there in director Arnaud Desplechin's latest, a pseudo-prequel to his even more comically cliché-titled My Sex Life... or How I Got Into An Argument. The chain-smoking? Oui. The young (male) protagonist, troubled, brilliant and sensitive? Absolument. Bouts of lovemaking, bed hopping and philosophising? Franchement, what did you expect? Now, to those who eat that stuff up, have I got news for you: My Golden Days is a wonderful, thoughtfully crafted work. As in My Sex Life, the film follows the exploits, and yes, sex life, of Mr. Paul Dedalus, played in part by a returning Matthieu Amalric. While Amalric was the anchor for the sprawling 1996...

Have you ever wondered what are the films that inspire the next generation of visionary filmmakers? As part of our monthly Ioncinephile profile, we ask the filmmaker (in this case, Norwegian filmmaker Eskil Vogt) to identify their all time top ten favorite films. Worth noting: this was a last minute request on my part, meaning the Scandi helmer did not have much time to reflect on film history in it’s totality — but Eskil was a great sport and kindly obliged. Vogt’s Blind receives its NYC release on September 4th via the Kim Stim folks and receives its VOD release via Fandor. Here is his top ten as of September 2nd, 2015.
Annie Hall – Woody Allen (1977)

Arnaud Desplechin's My Golden Days (Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse) is the "marvelously vivid origin story for the hopelessly romantic French academic played by Mathieu Amalric in 1996’s three-hour Gallic gabfest My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument," writes Variety's Justin Chang. All the reviews we've collected so far are positive with extra praise lavished on the leads, newcomers Quentin Dolmaire and Lou Roy-Lecollinet and the "inherently cinematic, the sun-crisped, agile cinematography of Irina Lubtchansky" (David Jenkins, Little White Lies). » - David Hudson...

Telluride - Actress Marion Cotillard didn't really explode onto the domestic film stage until "La Vie en Rose," but what a coming out it was. She managed to win an Oscar that few (ahem) saw coming and transformed that newfound respect and goodwill into a thriving Hollywood career, but it was hardly an overnight success story. Cotillard had already seen plenty of success in her native France before that 2007 explosion. She starred in Arnaud Desplechin's "My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument," Pierre Grimblat's "Lisa" and the "Taxi" action comedy trilogy -- earning plenty of recognition for...

Critics' Week has already begun celebrating its 50th anniversary by posting 50 video interviews with directors and actors who've seen their work debut in this section at Cannes. We're celebrating, too. In association with the 4+1 Film Festival, Mubi is presenting a retrospective of some of the greatest films first seen in Critics' Week over the past half-century. And even though the first 1000 views of each of the films will be free to you, the viewer, the rights holders will carry on receiving their duly earned revenue.
The retrospective encompasses over 100 titles in all, but please do keep in mind that rights issues can get complicated and not every film can be available in every country. That said, here's a quick overview of just some of the highlights:
Over in the Garage, a La Semaine Blogathon is already on the roll, starting with Kj Farrington's entry on Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know,...
