Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.
The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.
Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.
We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.

Tony Bennett's first record, "Because of You" was released in 1952 and it instantly codified the entertainer as one of the music world's great crooners. In 1962, his 15th record, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was certified platinum by the RIAA, but that was after he had already established himself with Count Basie and his Orchestra and as a great fan of songwriter Harold Arlen. All told, he released 61 records in his decades-long career, not including his eight albums of collaborations and duets. He sang with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, and many others. Most recently, he released two collaborations with Lady Gaga in 2018 and 2021. Bennett passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96. He will be deeply missed.

“Pretty Baby,” a two-part documentary about the intense highs and lows of American icon Brooke Shields, brought the house down with its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.
The doc explores the appalling sexualization of Shields beginning at age 9, the top-tier modeling and acting career that followed, and the urgent conversations she inspires around what society expects of women.
Directed by Lana Wilson (Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana”), “Pretty Baby” confronts milestones in Shields’ life that, in a post #MeToo world, shocked the audience at Park City’s Eccles Theater. Pre-pubescent nude photoshoots, male talk show hosts asking if 12-year-old Shields enjoys being a sex symbol, the horrors of an alcoholic mom and manager and Shields’ notable public battles with the likes of Tom Cruise are all on the table.
“I’ve always made it an important part of my journey to be as honest as I could.

To say that Brooke Shields was objectified during her early years would be the understatement of the century. It is hard to fathom how any of it happened, or how anyone thought it was Ok, through a contemporary lens — nude modeling at ten years old, branded “the world’s youngest sex symbol” at 12, appearing naked in a major Hollywood motion picture at 15. That she was able to gain any semblance of normalcy, let alone graduate Princeton and become a powerful voice for mothers everywhere, is extraordinary.

Our past returns to haunt us, again and again, through documentary and documentary, until every woman mistreated by time is resurrected to have her say. It happened with Britney Spears, with Janet Jackson, with Billie Holiday and others. At the helm of this latest retrospective is Brooke Shields, in Lana Wilson’s new documentary, “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.”
Premiering at Sundance and coming to Hulu later this year, the latest film from the director of “Miss Americana” places Shields’s multi-hyphenate career — model and actress, yes, but writer and advocate too — on display for nearly two and a half hours, eager to prove she is much more than a tabloid talking point.
Wilson’s film is named for Louis Malle’s “Pretty Baby,” in which Shields starred as a 12-year-old prostitute in this historical drama written by Polly Platt. Malle’s film was the urtext through which Shields was often...

Brooke Shields agreed to participate in a doc about her life and career not because of what it would say about her, but for what it could say through her — namely, a discussion about the sexualization of young girls.
By now, the celebrity bio-doc is well-trod territory, but Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, which premieres Jan. 20 at the Sundance Film Festival, aspires to be more than a career retrospective. “I’m not interested in famous-person problems. What I am interested in is how fame can amplify and supercharge relatable problems,” says director Lana Wilson, who most recently directed the Taylor Swift Netflix doc Miss Americana. “[Brooke’s] life has been extreme and utterly unique, but her experience of being a woman in America is horrifyingly relatable.”

Nothing is a paradox because there cannot be nothing unless there's something. "Seinfeld" is a show about nothing. It's also a show about something -- something acerbic, something genuine, something original, and something timeless.
It doesn't matter if you watched "Seinfeld" on NBC during the '90s, via reruns on TBS in the '00s, on DVD or Blu-ray in the early '10s, or are streaming it for the first time today. No matter how you experience it, "Seinfeld" is gold. If, like me, you watched "Seinfeld" during all of those cycles, you know it's like Golden Boy: sure to come out crisp and vivid on every watch.
Like most shows, it took time for "Seinfeld" to find itself, and its tone evolved over time as it tried to stay ahead of the comedic curve set by contemporaries like "Fraiser," "Mad About You," and "Cheers." It's not easy...

Through facial expressions and body language, he helps Nick sort out his problems. His only two speaking lines in the show are “You are a huge baby” and “Drive.”
Johnson took to Instagram to honor Ahn, writing, “Rip. So much fun to work with. He gave so much with literally no lines. I loved when he was on set. I was always expecting to somehow work with him again. Condolences to his family/friends.”
“New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel also mourned the loss, commenting, “Noooooo” with a crying emoji.

Brooke Shields is trying her hand at a holiday-themed rom-com on Netflix, and we could not be more excited.
The TV veteran will co-star on A Castle for Christmas on the streamer, opposite Cary Elwes, and if the first trailer is any indication, the movie will be a lot of fun.
The Netflix original movie follows an American author, Sophie (Shields), who makes her way to Scotland, and immediately falls in love with a castle.
Unfortunately, the owner, a Scottish Duke named Myles (Elwes), does not want to sell to a foreigner. The duo butt heads as they try to come to some sort of resolution, but they "just may find more than they bargained for."
The movie was filmed on-location in Scotland, and you can see the awe-inspiring visuals peppered throughout the trailer.

Search Party continues to build its stacked Season 5 cast as Kathy Griffin joins the HBO Max dark comedy in a recurring role, Deadline has confirmed.
From creators Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers and Michael Showalter, Search Party stars Alia Shawkat, John Reynolds, John Early and Meredith Hagner. The first three seasons followed best friends Dory (Shawkat), Drew (Reynolds), Elliott (Early) and Portia (Hagner) through a messy private investigation, semi-accidental murder, absurd cover-up and sensational trial. In Season 4, Dory was held prisoner by her psychotic stalker (Cole Escola), forcing Drew, Elliott and Portia to again become a search party – but this time for Dory.
The Emmy-winning My Life on the D-List comedian will recur as Liquorice Montague, a conspiracy theorist who takes Clare McNulty’s Chantal under her wing as a codependent apprentice. Season 5 will see Dory enter a very public business partnership with charismatic tech billionaire Tunnel Quinn, played byJeff Goldblum.

Kathy Griffin has joined the cast of “Search Party” for its fifth season, Variety has learned exclusively.
Griffin will recur in the HBO Max comedy as Liquorice Montague, a conspiracy theorist who takes Chantal (Clare McNulty) under her wing as a “co-dependent apprentice.”
“Working with Kathy was a huge life moment for us. She brought so much warmth, humanity and professionalism to set, and delivered a performance that will delight the world,” showrunners Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers said in a joint statement.
The fourth season of “Search Party” ended with Dory’s (Alia Shawkat) friends thinking she died in a house fire after she was held prisoner in that house’s basement. However, in the final moments of the episode, she awoke on a medical gurney, gasping for air and saying she “saw everything.”

Kathy Griffin, who announced that she is battling lung cancer and needs to undergo surgery, is no stranger to controversy – personal, political and, often, viral. She once told Jesus to “suck it” during an Emmys acceptance speech – that kind of thing. As the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Zero F–ksville,” the comedian has gone through ups and downs upon ups and downs, and she’s stood her ground the whole time.

Brooke Shields just had a sweet prom moment with her daughter Rowan Francis Henchy. The teen, who Brooke shares with her husband, film producer Chris Henchy, asked her mom if she could wear the dress the actress wore to the 1998 Golden Globes, in which she was nominated for her starring role in Suddenly Susan. It was her second nomination for the role, and though she lost to Calista Flockhart for Ally McBeal, the dress was no less special to Rowan. Brooke shared a series of pics of her daughter getting ready to head off to prom in the red strapless number, along with the caption, "I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in...

Netflix has given a lot of titles more exposure in the last few years, with many overlooked movies receiving attention on the platform. This trend is now set to include the underrated 2016 Jake Gyllenhaal film Nocturnal Animals, which deals with the tangled relationships between an art gallery owner and a novel by her former husband Edward. Directed by Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals was well received on its release and will no doubt pick up some new fans when it hits Netflix next month.
Adapted from Austin Wright’s 1993 book Tony and Susan, the pic frequently blurs the lines between reality and the seeming-fiction of the novel, within which Amy Adams’ Susan Morrow begins to see parallels with her first marriage. Gyllenhaal plays both Edward and Tony, the lead character in the book, who goes through a traumatic series of events involving his family. Other cast members include the likes of Armie Hammer,...

Sharpen your knives, “Dexter” fans. Showtime has ordered a limited series revival of the beloved serial killer drama with Michael C. Hall set to return.

Ben Stiller has revealed that, despite outcry from fans calling for a brief scene featuring the current United States President to be cut from the film, he won’t be editing Donald Trump out of his 2001 comedy “Zoolander.” Stiller discussed the controversy on a recent episode of The Daily Beast’s podcast “The New Abnormal.”

Chicago – The trio of teenage sisters that are “Gold Frankincense & Myrrh” (Gfm) – Cj Sanders, Maggie “Rose” and Evie “Lulu” English – create their sound by blending the melodic pop-rock of Paramore with the power and aggressiveness of Slipknot. Gfm wants to use their music as a vehicle to illustrate that women and young people can create positive, uplifting music that can still rock.
The Jacksonville (Florida)-based band has never been shy about delving into the unknown, and relished the chance to be creative with the people who understand them the most … their dedicated fans. The result is their new single (click title), ”Susan”, a comedic departure from Gfm’s usual aggressive style.

Clyde Phillips is getting back in business with Showtime. The former Dexter and Nurse Jackie showrunner has signed a joint overall deal with the premium cable network and CBS Television Studios. Under the pact, Phillips will develop projects for both entities that can air on platforms within or outside the ViacomCBS umbrella.
This marks the first joint overall deal for siblings Showtime and CBS TV Studios, both overseen by David Nevins, which have increased their creative collaborations over the past couple of years. The pact will also likely provide fuel for the never-ending speculation about a potential Dexter follow-up at Showtime.
“Clyde is a world-class showrunner and filmmaker who brings intelligence, depth, maturity and style to both drama and comedy series,” said Gary Levine, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks. “Our many collaborations in the past have been deeply gratifying, and I am thrilled that we will be working together again.

Cruising the edge of sets like a shark in shallow water, still photographer Ron P. Jaffe has spent a career using his stealthiness to capture the perfect shot. Sharing tales from times past as he sits in the serenity of his Playa del Rey home, he describes taking pictures on many of the crime movies, comedies and dramatic television series made in Hollywood during the past 30 years.

Jaffe was raised in Montgomery, Ala., after World War II. As a schoolkid, his grades were average, but he enjoyed the high school darkroom and worked on yearbook photography. By any measure, Kathy Griffin’s comedy tour last year was a big hit. She traveled to 15 countries and played regal venues (such as the Sydney Opera House) as she dished about the devastating fallout from a 2017 photograph in which she posed with a gory mask that looked like Donald Trump’s decapitated head. The redemptive set was called, appropriately enough, “Laugh Your Head Off.” It raked in $4.4 million, and it earned her a rave review from The New York Times.
But when Griffin returned to her Bel Air home last October, she quickly realized that Hollywood wasn’t ready to forgive her. Even despite her touring success, every executive in town regarded her as an unemployable comic who’d crossed the line. She tried to shop around a comedy special, but Netflix and HBO passed.
