“I thought at least once, I should try a brand new play,” reveals Jessica Lange of her return to Broadway in “Mother Play.” The acclaimed actress won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Mary Tyrone in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” but she had only ever worked on the classics when it came to theater. So this new play by Paula Vogel provided the “perfect opportunity” to originate a role on stage and present audiences with something they had never seen. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Lange portrays Phyllis in the play, a woman based on Vogel’s own mother. We see Phyllis spend decades moving her children (played by Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jim Parsons) from one run down apartment to the next, struggling to offer them proper maternal care, and battling a drinking habit.

At A Down-home Eatery near his waterfront home on Florida’s west coast in 2017, Dickey Betts, stout and white-haired but still evoking his youthful intensity, was asked about his imposing reputation. “People are a little bit standoffish because they think if they say something wrong, I’ll be aggressive or something with them,” he told Rolling Stone, adding with his drawl, “But I’m not like that at all. Unless you start saying shit that’s really demeaning, and then I won’t hesitate to …” Betts didn’t finish the sentence,...

Exclusive: A little over a month after Season 3 of Resident Alien wrapped its run on Syfy, the future of the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama is up in the air. And there is some intrigue over where the series starring Alan Tudyk would continue should it get a fourth season.
I hear there are talks about Resident Alien moving from Syfy to NBCU cable sibling USA Network, which currently doesn’t have scripted originals besides Chucky, which it shares with Syfy. According to sources, a return to Syfy appears unlikely, so USA is Resident Alien‘s only feasible destination within NBCU, whose UCP division produces the adaptation of the comic book by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.
But a potential Season 4 pickup by USA would come with a major budget reduction, as much as $500,000 an episode, which will be challenging, I hear.

Two-time Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange will receive this year’s CineMerit Award at the Munich International Film Festival, honoring her “remarkable contributions to the world of cinema.”
In addition to her two Academy Awards — for best supporting actress in Tootsie in 1983 and best actress in Blue Sky in 1995 — Lange can point to a total of six Oscar nominations, three Emmy wins (from 10 nods), five Golden Globes (from 16 noms) and one Tony award.
Alongside her impressive film career, Lange has more recently become something of a muse for Ryan Murphy, appearing in multiple seasons of American Horror Story — she’s picked up five Emmy nominations and two wins for the FX drama — and has been dazzling as Joan Crawford alongside Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis in the FX/Hulu miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan.

Exclusive: Netflix’s new feature Boss Dan Lin has tapped former DreamWorks Animation and Coyote Vs. Acme producer Chris deFaria to consult for the streamer’s animation department, we hear on very good authority.
Lin and deFaria worked together on the mega success of The Lego Movie when the duo were at Warners. Essentially, what is being sorted at Netflix is how to eventize their animation movies more. The streamer, together with Annapurna, saved the Blue Sky axed Disney LGBTQ+ movie Nimona, a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger; the pic wound up getting an Oscar nomination for Animated Feature.
Animation reports into Lin. Karen Toliver serves as VP of Animated Film.

If you had approached me on the street and asked if I was a Jessica Lange fan, I would have answered with an emphatic “duh!” But since you clicked on this link, I'm coming to you through your screen to tell you this informatioin. Having originally met Lange in high school via the actress-heavy ordeal that is American Horror Story, watching her communicate an actual character amidst so much lurid, proudly threadbare plotting was revelatory to witness. Lange served Ryan Murphy’s baroque and sentimental grotesqueries with leonine force. Even as subsequent seasons leaned too heavily on her characters as pillars to be toppled, and it became all too easy to project Lange’s distaste towards her surroundings into her vainglorious Supreme and dissatisfied ringleader, she gives a hell of a good show, finding ways to keep herself amused and visibly gratified (or maybe relieved) to play off her talented co-stars.

Like Mark said in his Veronica Cartwright tribute, this 4/20 is an essential date for actressexuals... among others. After all, we celebrate the horror queen's 75th birthday and that of Jessica Lange as well. Initially, I thought about writing about the star's upcoming adaptation of O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, but that film seems trapped in some nebulous distribution limbo. By all accounts, production wrapped in late 2022 after a brief halt due to financing issues. Since then, there's been hardly any news, and Lange herself speculated it might not yet be finished in a Vulture interview. Let's hope we don't have another Blue Sky situation in our hands, though that farrago resulted in a Best Actress Oscar.
So, instead of dwelling on that mystery, why not remember The Film Experience's collective love for Jessica Lange? Going through the site, I came up with a selection of write-ups worth revisiting,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the presenters for the upcoming 96th Oscars on March 10.
While names like Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) were expected, as it’s custom for the most recent Best Actor winner to present Best Actress, and the most recent Best Actress winner to present Best Actor, the rest of the slate is almost all past Academy Award winners and arguably the biggest young star of the moment.

When Chris Wedge's animated film "Ice Age" first came out in 2002, it was considered novel and striking for many reasons. It was set in prehistoric times yet eschewed dinosaurs in favor of megafauna living in the Pleistocene Epoch. The three main characters were a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), a smilodon named Diego (Denis Leary), and a mammoth named Manfred aka Manny (Ray Romano), and they were engaged in a great migration to flee the oncoming Ice Age. The plot of their first movie apes John Ford's 1946 Western "3 Godfathers," as the three animals discover a human infant that they must keep safe and deliver back to the then-evolutionarily-novel homo sapiens living nearby.
The design of "Ice Age" was striking, aiming for broad, stylized characters that were markedly different from the friendly, big-eyed protagonists of Disney pictures. It certainly helped that the "Ice Age" movies featured a character named Scrat,...

Los Angeles, Feb 27 (Ians) ‘Barbie’ may have been out-awarded by ‘Oppenheimer’, but Ryan Gosling, according to ‘Variety’, ended months of speculation to say he will officially perform ‘I’m Just Ken’ live at the Oscars.
Sources tell ‘Variety’ that the actor will sing the Academy Award-nominated song from ‘Barbie’ during the 96th annual ceremony on March 10. The Academy declined to comment.
Whether he would agree to show off his singing chops on the Oscars stage has been a big question ever since both Gosling and the song picked up nominations in January.
In his ‘Variety’ cover story in early February, Gosling insisted the Academy hadn’t yet asked him to perform. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,” said Gosling, who is up for an acting Oscar for his work as Ken. “I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.

In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.

Stephen Amell’s TV wardrobe is taking a turn for the traditional: The Arrow and Heels actor has landed a starring role in Suits: L.A., the newest spinoff from the resurgent franchise.
The potential series — which was ordered to pilot at NBC earlier this month — centers on Amell’s Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York who is described as a “charismatic force of nature who puts his own needs above others,” per the official synopsis. “Ted joined forces 15 years ago with his old buddy, Stuart Lane, to build an L.A. law firm that specializes in criminal and entertainment law.

In front of a very enthusiastic audience of more than 600 fans, students and SAG-AFTRA members, actor Matt Bomer shared an unvarnished take on the heartache, hurdles and proudest moments he’s experienced in his 20-year film and television career.
Bomer appeared at the annual TV festival in Atlanta to accept The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award – presented to him by current Scad acting student Eric Ackerman – for his contributions to storytelling. Bomer was specifically honored for his amplification of Lgtbq+ stories and characters in projects such as HBO’s The Normal Heart, Netflix’s 2024 Oscar contender Maestro and Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, to name just a few.
The award was created in 2023 to acknowledge artists whose work, often without fanfare, reflects a commitment to telling stories previously marginalized by Hollywood. Recent honorees have included David Oyelowo, Niecy Nash and Eva Longoria.

An expansion of the Suits universe is now closer than ever.
NBC has given a pilot order to Suits: L.A. from Aaron Korsh, the creator and writer of the original series, which is set to begin production in late March in Vancouver. As Deadline revealed exclusively on Thursday, Victoria Mahoney will direct and executive produce the offshoot.
Suits: L.A. would not be a reboot or revival but more like a new chapter in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location.
According to the project’s logline, Suits: L.A. is centered on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.

Exclusive: Film and TV helmer Victoria Mahoney has been tapped to direct Suits: L.A., NBC’s proposed Suits offshoot, which has been heating up for a pilot order.
As Deadline reported exclusively in October, the project, from Suits creator Aaron Korsh, is not a revival or reboot of the popular USA Network series and, unlike the 2019 Pearson, the new legal procedural is not a spinoff either — it would be a Suits universe series in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location, Los Angeles.
Like Suits, which was set in New York and filmed in Toronto, Suits: L.A. also will film in Canada, with Vancouver standing in for Los Angeles. Production is slated to begin in March, I hear.
Korsh executive produces alongside David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein, who were EPs with him on the original series.

Of the 272 films that have earned lone acting Oscar nominations – meaning they were each recognized in one performance category and nowhere else – a whopping 101 (or 37.1%) accomplished the feat thanks to lead actresses. Whereas just 60 examples have occurred in the Best Actor category, the corresponding female one reached that benchmark in 1991 and is on track to double it less than two decades from now. Its triple digit total has now been intact for one full year, having directly resulted from the simultaneous nominations of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) and Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”).
Although an Oscar bid was generally expected to follow de Armas’s 2023 BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations, Riseborough very memorably came out of nowhere, having defied precedent by benefiting from an enthusiastic grassroots campaign. While most of the earlier lone Best Actress contenders belong in de Armas’s camp, many align with Riseborough in having pulled off major surprises.

Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.
Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.

Thanksgiving weekend featured an animation face-off between a titan of the industry, the 100-year-old Walt Disney Animation Studios, and a relative upstart, Netflix, which only started releasing its own animated features in 2019.
Disney’s holiday movie, “Wish,” was a musical extravaganza featuring the watercolor backgrounds of the studio’s past combined with cutting-edge CGI, while Netflix’s “Leo” was a more budget-conscious musical set in modern-day Florida.
It was a showdown of theatrical versus streaming, legacy studio versus blustery upstart, fairy tale versus contemporary storytelling. And the results were startling.
While “Wish” came in third at the box office with a disappointing $31.6 million, the Adam Sandler-starring “Leo” debuted to 34.6 million views (which is hours viewed divided by total runtime), according to Netflix, which in box office terms equaled a haul of around $500 million for its opening weekend, one insider with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. “Leo” has been...

Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.

A lucky 13 performers have won both Oscars for acting. That is one hell of an exclusive club that even the likes of four-time Best Actress champion Katharine Hepburn and triple Best Actor victor Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t manage to join. If you've ever wondered when a surprise isn't a surprise, look no further than the possibility of a new arm of the Suits franchise.
After a modestly successful run on USA Network that ended in 2019 after nine seasons and a less successful spinoff, Suits hit Netflix and became the biggest streaming success on record.
Deadline exclusively reports today that there is a very good chance the beloved Blue Sky program could be making a comeback -- of sorts.
According to Deadline, series creator Aaron Korsh, who in August took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to tell fans there was "no reboot or anything" in the works, does indeed have such a project in the works.
What's a little fib when there's the possibility of good programming on the way, right?

Exclusive: For the past four months, Suits has been the hottest series on television, breaking a slew of streaming viewership records. Now the franchise, which ended in September 2019 with the Suits series finale, is plotting a comeback.
Series creator Aaron Korsh is in development of a Suits offshoot for NBCUniversal, sources tell Deadline. Deals are still being negotiated, but I hear the project is expected to be fast-tracked with a serious commitment.
This is not a revival or reboot and, unlike the 2019 Pearson, the new legal procedural is not a spinoff either — it would be a Suits universe series in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location, sources said. I hear Los Angeles is a backdrop considered for the workplace drama.
Like is the case for most NBCUniversal development, a network or platform for the potential new series has not been determined yet.

With six Oscar nominations (with two wins), well over a dozen Golden Globe nods spanning 40+ years, three Primetime Emmys, and countless other accolades, Jessica Lange has had a fantastic career in Hollywood. But at 74, she thinks it may be time to hang it up – not because she’s older but partly due to comic book movies.
Speaking with The Telegraph, Jessica Lange said that she is concerned at how far creativity has fallen as a priority. And one of the key culprits is the sort of fare that Marvel, DC and more are pushing in theaters multiple times a year. “I’m not interested in these big comic-book franchise films. And one of the key culprits is the sort of fare that Marvel, DC and more are pushing in theaters multiple times a year. “I’m not interested in these big comic-book franchise films. I think that they’ve sacrificed this art that we’ve been involved in…for the sake of profit.” While Lange didn’t explicitly say that the MCU is to blame for her leaving the business, consider this thought: “I...

Suits just broke another Nielsen streaming record by extending its streak atop the weekly Top 10 to 12 straight weeks. Not too bad for a show that has been off the air for four years.
The last hit from USA Network’s Blue Sky golden era, the series starring Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams was popular in its day, making it to nine seasons and spawning a short-lived spinoff, Pearson. It transitioned to streaming and was available on Prime Video and Peacock for years until, in an unassuming, modestly priced ($200K-$400K an episode) second-cycle non-exclusive deal, Netflix this year took in the first eight seasons of the show, sharing them with Peacock.
What followed was nothing short of a lightning in the bottle. Suits has exploded in popularity and just surpassed Ozark for the most No. 1 overall finishes in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 ever.

Jessica Lange doesn’t think she’s going to work in filmmaking much longer after feeling that “creativity is secondary now to corporate profits.”
In a new interview with The Telegraph published Thursday, the Oscar-winning actress spoke about her love of photography, bouts of loneliness, never feeling comfortable with fame and why she thinks the industry is not what it used to be for performers.
The King Kong and Blue Sky star admitted that she feels “wonderful films by really great filmmakers, wonderful stories, great characters” are rare now. As a result, she is considering retiring soon from the performance industry, telling the U.K. outlet, “I think I’m going to start phasing out of filmmaking.”
When asked to clarify if she meant she’s “actually thinking of retiring,” the Tootsie actress responded, “I am.”
“I don’t think I’ll do this too much longer,” she continued. “Creativity...

Some longtime Twitter users are resisting Elon Musk‘s attempt to make X happen. According to a survey conducted by The Harris Poll and AdAge‘s research division, 69% of U.S. X users are still calling the platform by its old name and are still referring to its posts as “tweets.”
The Harris Poll and AdAge found that X users are mostly aware of the platform’s rebrand, even if they’re not on board with the change just yet. Of the 1,047 adults surveyed for the report, 79% were aware of the Twitter-to-x shake-up, but only 31% are committing to the new name themselves.
Several factors are making it difficult for X users to accept Musk’s rebrand. AdAge notes that the letter X, which represents closed applications, drug use, and unknown math variables, carries negative connotations.
Another issue is that X users aren’t sure what to call tweets anymore. Musk...

“A Haunting in Venice” began its domestic box office jaunt with $1.2 million in Thursday preview earnings. That’s slightly above the $1.1 million procured by “Death on the Nile” in February of 2022.
It’s understandably below the $1.6 million earned by “Murder on the Orient Express” in November of 2017. With strong reviews (77% and 6.6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes), including plenty of critics arguing that it’s the best of Kenneth Branagh’s three films as Hercule Poirot, the hope is an opening weekend closer to $20 million than $15 million.
The franchise started with a bang with “Murder on the Orient Express.” That offering starred a slew of big names like Johnny Depp (still an added value element), Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz and senior citizen-magnet Judi Dench. That it was based on one of Agatha Christie’s most famous books didn’t hurt. A $28 million debut led to a $103 million domestic and $353 million global cume on a $55 million budget.
