While studio executives are busy resurrecting once-popular shows that had everything from a multi-season storyline to a not-so-successful finale, projects with fresh ideas are being shut down after one or two seasons.
Often, the end of a series comes as a surprise even to its creators, let alone its audience. This was the case with Not Dead Yet – despite the entertaining premise, ABC canceled the show after the second season. Although the show did not become a hit, it gathered a loyal fanbase that refused to believe that a third season of Not Dead Yet will never hit the screens.
Of course, this is not the first time in the history of ABC that outstanding projects have had too short a life. But the most unfair case of cancellation happened thirty years ago.

If you watched TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s, you will remember that most popular shows did not focus on a consistent plot. Each episode told its own arc and there was no need to know the characters’ backstory.
It was a pretty smart move: a person could jump into the show at any time. However, one series changed the way the TV projects were made – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Today, Fewer and Fewer Viewers Remember Buffy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon's cult series about a high school girl who leads a double life. During the day she studies and spends time with her friends Xander and Willow, and at night she goes out into the abandoned streets of the city and the cemetery to kill demons.
Today, only hardcore fans in their 30s seem to remember Buffy, despite the show’s cult status.

We are somehow now into the spring season, and while cinemas have been a tad dull, noteworthy new books have arrived at a frantic pace. Here are some that should be on your radar, and please note that our next column will include, among other treats, a lengthy rundown of recent noteworthy novels.
The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two by Tanya Lapointe with Stefanie Broos (Insight Editions)
Dune: Part One, the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, spawned a handful of painstakingly crafted, info-packed hardcover books. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two takes the same approach that made these earlier texts so satisfying. Tanya Lapointe was on set every day, and her accounts of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes are captivating. The designs of Geidi Prime are standouts and supplemented with quotes like the following, from production designer Patrice Vermette...

About 20 notebooks are socked away in producer-director-writer Edward Zwick’s office in no particular order, full of odd magazine clippings and notes. During the pandemic he rooted through them and rewatched his work, looking for the nuggets and details that would become his memoir “Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood.”
He chronicles a television career with longtime Bedford Falls partner Marshall Herskovitz — together they created “Thirtysomething,” “Once and Again,” and “My So-Called Life” — but much of the book tracks Zwick in the movie business, from Demi Moore and Rob Lowe in “About Last Night” in 1986, “Legends of the Fall” with Brad Pitt in 1994, “The Last Samurai” with Tom Cruise in 2003, “Blood DIamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2006, and his last outing with Cruise, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” in 2016.

Tokyo Vice is back from quite a lengthy hiatus. And despite the nearly two-year gap between seasons — one that saw a full rebrand for streamer Max — things pick up pretty much exactly where they left off.
Series executive producer and director Alan Poul, who helmed the first two episodes, suggests the handling of the pair will probably soften the blow for viewers. “The premiere is like episode nine of season one, a direct continuation,” Poul says of the two-part Feb. 8 premiere. “The second episode is really the start of the new storylines.”
Tokyo Vice has been a bizarre culmination of interests for Poul. The prolific TV producer (Tales of the City, My So-Called Life, Six Feet Under, The Eddy) and director (Big Love, Swingtown, The Newsroom) has been speaking Japanese since he spent time in the country as a teenage foreign exchange student. He doubled down in college, pursuing an...

The closest comp to Ed Zwick’s new memoir Hits, Flops And Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood is William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, where he posited a definitive piece of advice on the elusive formula for hit making: “Nobody knows anything.” Although he didn’t create the “if you want to send a message, try Western Union” line that has many authors, Zwick spent a career trying to defy that adage, in directing, writing and producing a long list of great and meaningful films and TV series topped by the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, to Glory, Blood Diamond, About Last Night, Defiance, The Last Samurai, The Siege, thirtysomething, My So Called Life and many others.
Comparing his book to Goldman sets a high bar. Like the scripter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid did, Zwick might fawn over great actors like Denzel Washington,...

Entering the world of Boy Swallows Universe is like stepping into a whirlwind of genres, emotions, and uniquely Australian storytelling. If you’ve found yourself captivated by the madness of this tale and are on the hunt for shows that echo its excitement, crime, and teenage drama, you’re in for a treat. With Jared Leto, the saying that “there is no great genius without a mixture of madness” is very accurate. He’s as talented as he is unorthodox, to say the least. He’s known for his complex persona and powerful performances. In fact, he constantly challenges himself and takes on a diverse range of roles in both film and television. Leto has been in movies and TV shows like My So-Called Life, Requiem for a Dream, and Suicide Squad. Needless to say, he’s a cocktail of talent. Between his charisma as frontman of a rock band and his method acting, here are some...

As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
Sometimes, fan enthusiasm results in these works getting revived in some incarnation or another, and, unfortunately, the results are often unsightly. But at least there's a reason for going back. The same isn't...

Hulu may have started out as the redheaded stepchild of the streamers back in Netflix’s heyday, but it has stuck around long enough to have firmly established itself as one of the old standbys. It follows, then, that Hulu would have a veritable fount of LGBTQ content ready to compete with the robust queer catalogues available to subscribers of Netflix, HBO, and other platforms.
A brief perusal of Hulu’s LGBTQ section doesn’t disappoint, but digging in deeper will give you the best chance at a genuinely memorable watch. Right now, the Disney-backed streamer is hosting popular queer television classics, like “The L Word,” “My So-Called Life,” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” alongside fresher fare, including “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and “Killing Eve.” Recent Hulu originals, such as “Love, Victor” and “Shrill,” deserve singling out, if only because you know they’re buzz-worthy and readily available on the service.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

A babymoon is supposed to be a relaxing pre-birth break, but it looks set to take on a very different meaning on You're Not Supposed to Be Here.
The Lifetime movie will debut on Saturday, November 4, at 8/7c, and the first trailer is insane.
Chrishell Stause stars opposite Diora Baird, with the pair playing a couple whose babymoon to a remote mountain town is anything but peaceful.
The movie came from a concept by Lauren Caster, who won The WrapWomen and Lifetime PitchFest for Emerging Female Filmmakers in 2021 as part of Lifetime's Broader Focus initiative that supports female creatives.
"When pregnant lesbian couple Zoe and Kennedy struggle with the stress of work and family life, Kennedy's boss offers them a cabin getaway in the woods," the logline teases.
"When they arrive at the beautiful cabin located in a remote mountain town, the locals aren't all overly welcoming," Lifetime adds.

As a TV viewer, there is nothing as frustrating as becoming invested in a new series, just to have it cancelled in its prime – or sometimes even before it has a chance to reach its full potential.
For decades, the Big Three networks relied on Nielsen ratings when determining which shows survived for another season, and which would receive the axe. With the rise of streaming services, and the addition of numerous networks beyond the original Big Three, there are many more shows competing for viewership, with those viewers also having the ability to choose when to watch. Although the dynamics of viewership have changed, the same two primary elements typically determine the survival of a series: ratings and production costs.

This year’s Emmy nominees will highlight a more diverse crop of actors, with Latino performers having a particularly strong showing.
Of course, much of that is thanks to Pedro Pascal, who has become the most-nominated Latino in a single year with three noms. He’s recognized for his work in “The Last of Us” as lead drama actor, “Saturday Night Live” as guest comedy actor and “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World” as the narrator. Pascal’s nomination for HBO’s dystopian video game adaptation makes him only the second Latino ever recognized in the drama category after Jimmy Smits’ four consecutive noms for “NYPD Blue” from 1996-1999. But there were some notable Latino stars who didn’t hear their names read — namely, Diego Luna, who was snubbed for Disney’s “Andor,” despite its best drama series nomination.

About a week before the finale, the Washington Post ran its own plea to keep the show on the air, with the headline, “A TV Show Worth Saving.” Writer Judy Mann shared her love of the show, which she said offered just as much to her as to her teen daughter. “It’s important that Angela make mistakes, that she’s allowed not to be a nice person,” [series creator Winnie] Holzman, who spoke to Mann for the piece, said. “I believe in the kind of storytelling where people aren’t always flawless,...

Nowadays, there are a lot of great start-to-finish LGBTQ TV shows, from reality shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to comedies like “The Other Two.” But just because a show isn’t always gay, doesn’t mean it’s never gay.
When gay characters started popping up on television sporadically in the ’70s and early ’80s, they were largely one-episode wonders, with their sexualities serving as plot fodder for the regular, straight cast members to grapple with. One of, if not the first, gay characters on television came in the fifth episode of Norman Lear’s “All in the Family,” which focused on main character Archie (Carroll O’Connor) learning that one of his former college friends is gay. Other sitcoms that followed “All in the Family” utilized similar one episode plots: a 1976 episode of “The Bob Newhart Show” saw the main character trying to curb prejudice in a therapy group when a member came out.

New voting methods will likely yield surprise Emmy nomination inclusions (and exclusions) this year. There could also be historic representation in several areas, with ethnicity, age and decades-old records shattered.
HBO is no stranger to setting Emmy records. The fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” currently holds multiple records, including the most overall nominations for a drama series at 161 across its eight seasons. The network is celebrating its 50th anniversary and a new Max branding — so naturally, it wants more. If the early projections are accurate and it lands four drama series noms — “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and last year’s winner, “Succession,” — HBO would tie the record for most series noms by a network in a single year, held by NBC since 1992.

For a long time, Teen Dramas were my guilty pleasure. I wasn’t into the standard stuff like 90210 or Party of Five. No, I either hated those shows, or I just never saw them. My favorites were shows like My So-Called Life or Freaks and Geeks. I think it was because, much like the characters on the show, I fell in love with them. Like soap opera fans, I became invested in the character’s relationships. But, unlike previous shows, The O.C. was one of those rare shows that gave you just enough drama that it didn’t go into full-blown melodrama.
Okay, that’s a lie. It gave you A Lot of melodrama at times. But for some strange reason, the show felt sincere. While many of these teen dramas at the time felt like they were writing episodes for ratings, the O.C. just felt like they were telling good stories.

Actor Claire Danes has managed to build a nice career for herself after starring in highly respected works like Homeland. Danes’ success was especially important seeing as how she seriously considered quitting the business a couple of years prior.
Claire Danes once took a break from acting for college Claire Danes | Matt Winkelmeyer/FilmMagic
Danes was already on the rise during the early to mid 90s. She began making a name for herself in small roles in television projects. In 1994, she had the opportunity to lead her own television drama with the series My So-Called Life. Although the show was canceled after one season, the cancellation didn’t stall Danes’ career.
But eventually, the actor star thought it might have been wise to take a break from acting. One of her motivations was to reacquaint herself with others around her age range who she could relate to more. To do this,...

With a prominent recurring part on “Game of Thrones” and now a starring role on “The Last of Us,” HBO darling Bella Ramsey, age 19, has already built a career that would be the envy of any actor. Having previously clinched a BAFTA Award for Netflix’s “The Worst Witch”, she is now quite a serious contender heading into the 2023 Best Drama Actress Emmy race. If the teen triumphs for “The Last of Us” at the 75th annual ceremony, which is scheduled to precede her 20th birthday by 12 days, she will set new precedents as both the youngest champion in her category’s history and the youngest person to ever win a lead acting Emmy for a continuing series.

The Golden Globe Awards slid to the second-lowest viewer total in their 28-year history on NBC with Tuesday’s ceremony.
The telecast averaged 6.25 million viewers, down 10 percent from 6.91 million for the last televised Globes ceremony in 2021. (Last year’s awards weren’t broadcast, as NBC opted not to air them due to controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.) The 2021 show was a remote production, with hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey emceeing in front of a mostly empty Beverly Hilton ballroom.
The all-time low for NBC came in the writers’ strike year of 2008, when the HFPA aired a televised press conference announcing the winners rather than the usual ceremony. That broadcast gathered about 6 million viewers.
Tuesday’s show delivered a 1.1 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49, down 28 percent from 1.52 two years ago. The demo rating is an all-time low for NBC. (Nielsen ratings numbers don’t...

Claire Danes has a lot to celebrate during her night at the Golden Globes on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The occasion marked her first public appearance since news broke on Jan. 9 that she and husband Hugh Dancy are expecting their third child. Danes, who's nominated at the ceremony for her role in FX's "Fleishman Is in Trouble," glowed in a sparkling white dress that showed her small baby bump as she posed on the carpet.
Danes and Dancy are parents to two children: Cyrus, 10, and Rowan, 4. The pair met back in 2006 on the set of the movie "Evening" and married three years later, in 2009. They live primarily in New York's West Village and are often spotted out and about with their family like average New Yorkers.
This year, Danes's Globes nomination marks the sixth time she's been nominated at the ceremony. She's won a staggering four times before: in 1995 for "My So-Called Life,...

Considering all 10 TV acting Golden Globe categories, the widest age range of the year involves the Best Comedy Actress nominees. 51 years separate reigning champ Jean Smart (71) of HBO Max’s “Hacks” from first-timer Jenna Ortega (20) of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” while the gaps in the other categories range from 27 to 47 years. Smart is looking to break her own record as the all-time oldest recipient of this lead award, but she faces a formidable challenge from Ortega, who could set a new precedent as the youngest winner in this category and second youngest performer to snag a TV Golden Globe of any kind.
Rounding out the 2023 Best Comedy Actress lineup are Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, and Kaley Cuoco, making for an average age of 38. Ortega, who would be the first TV acting Golden Globe winner born during the 21st century, is the second youngest contender in this category’s history, after 19-year-old Patty Duke.

A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.
Linney came up short in 2021’s drama actress race against “The Crown” star Emma Corrin, who has passed her role of Princess Diana on to current supporting nominee Elizabeth Debicki. Her other three former challengers...

Stepping into the shoes of two-time Golden Globe-winning director Steven Spielberg is a tough task, but it’s one that Gabriel Labelle has nonetheless adroitly accomplished. The rising star is now close to being recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association himself thanks to his performance in “The Fabelmans,” which Spielberg co-wrote and directed as a roman à clef based on his own childhood. At 20, Labelle is the youngest hopeful in this year’s Best Film Drama Actor Golden Globe race, and would indeed be the category’s youngest nominee ever.

“There was not a moment I forgot just how crazy it was what we were asking them to do,” remembers Clea DuVall about casting the stars of her Freevee series “High School.” She and fellow showrunner Laura Kittrell chose twins Railey Gilliland and Seazynn Gilliland to play fictionalized versions of the real-life musical duo Tegan and Sara Quin, even though neither had any acting experience. Kittrell adds that on the first day of shooting, all their doubts melted away. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

When "Gilmore Girls" first made its debut on the now-defunct WB network back in 2000, it would have been easy at first glance to lump the show together with The WB's roster of female-skewed dramas at the time, including the likes of "Dawson's Creek" and "Felicity." Yet those who tuned in discovered something far deeper and richer, a series that deftly blended comedy and drama in telling the story of single mom Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) raising her studious teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) in Connecticut's quirkiest town. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, her gift for hilariously authentic dialogue was ever-present in characters who spoke fast, quipped hard, and always had the perfect retort in conversations that played out like verbal tennis matches.
While the Lorelai-Rory relationship remained the show's heart, soul, and spine, as the show evolved "Gilmore Girls" also introduced an entertainingly eccentric cast of supporting characters who lived in Stars Hollow.

Long before she bagged back-to-back Best TV Drama Actress Golden Globes for “Homeland” in 2012 and 2013, Claire Danes initially conquered the same category as the 15-year-old star of “My So-Called Life.” Nearly three decades later, she still holds the Golden Globe record for youngest TV acting champ, with 1974 Best Film Supporting Actress recipient Linda Blair being the only younger acting winner overall. Although her TV record is almost guaranteed to remain intact by the end of this season, there may be a second place shake-up depending on whether voters warm to 20-year-old “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega.
Presently, Ortega ranks sixth in Gold Derby’s Best TV Comedy Actress Golden Globe predictions, behind such formidable opponents as Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). After graduating with a degree in Japanese language and literature from Yale University, Poul was working in New York as a Japanese cinema programmer in the mid-1980s when he was approached by maverick screenwriter and filmmaker Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Light Sleeper) with an offer to serve as an associate producer on the movie project that would become Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) — Schrader’s now classic, semi-experimental biopic about the iconoclastic Japanese author Yukio Mishima. Poul accepted the job and decamped with Schrader to Japan, earning his entree into the film business at Tokyo’s Toho Studios,...

Over the past seven years, Patricia Arquette has pulled off the impressive feat of scoring three Golden Globe wins in as many acting categories. After first being honored with the 2015 Best Film Supporting Actress prize for “Boyhood,” she received two television trophies for her work on the limited series “Escape at Dannemora” and “The Act”. Now, her dramatic performance on Apple TV+’s “Severance” could lead to her second supporting TV victory, which would make her only the fourth actress to ever achieve four Golden Globe wins in less than a decade.
Discounting non-competitive awards, the first woman to become a four-time acting Golden Globe champ in under 10 years was Helen Hunt. Her 1998 Best Film Actress win for “As Good As It Gets” was preceded by a trio of Best TV Comedy Actress triumphs for “Mad About You” (1994-1995; 1997). Her record of four victories across a four-year span was later matched by Sarah Jessica Parker,...

Waterside Studios has found its first project in the miniseries “The Last Wish of Sasha Cade.” Created by Jacqueline Pepall, currently at work on “Horrible Histories” for the BBC, it’s based on a novel by Cheyanne Young.
Headed by Jeff Norton, who will produce, Waterside Studios is a new creative content venture from Canada’s Corus Entertainment and part of the Nelvana Studios group. The company was launched following an overall deal with Norton’s IP company Dominion of Drama.
The bittersweet story – pitched at Mia Market and billed as “All the Bright Places” meets “The Fault in Our Stars” – sees a high school girl trying to come to terms with her best friend’s passing of cancer. But Sasha keeps on revealing her secrets, as Rocki starts to receive letters written before she died. Sasha, who was adopted, had a brother she never knew. Now, she is asking her friend to meet him.

If you’re someone of a certain (gay) persuasion, all I have to say about “High School” to pique your interest is that it’s a) a new coming-of-age drama about twin musicians Tegan and Sara Quin that’s b) based on Tegan and Sara’s own memoir, c) co-stars Cobie Smulders as their mother and d) was created in large part by no other than Clea DuVall, whose performance in “But I’m a Cheerleader” among many other credits has long made her the subject of many a queer awakening. Whether these points immediately intrigue you or not, though, you should also know that the show is also great. You don’t have to know who Tegan and Sara are to appreciate their story, which explores loneliness, connection and longing with such palpable empathy.
