Exclusive: MindRiot Entertainment, the transatlantic indie behind Danielle Deadwyler’s Parallel, and the upcoming OceanGate pic Salvaged is moving into production on Trash Talk, a docuseries about NBA Hall-Of-Famer Gary Payton.
Filmmaker Scott Waugh will direct the series. Cameras are set to officially begin rolling Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee, where Payton will make an appearance at the Ama Supercross Championship.
Specific details on the series and its focus are currently under wraps, but MindRiot COO Randa Minkarah told Deadline that audiences “will get to see Payton aka “The Glove” — whose legendary athletic grit and tongue was showcased on Netflix’s The Last Dance – talk trash while on horseback with rodeo cowboys, fly fishing with producer John Dietsch (A River Runs Through It), and maybe even go head to head selling cookies with a bad-ass troupe of kids.”

The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Brad Pitt celebrated his second Oscar win thanks to his stuntman role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Although he’d previously won a Best Picture victory for producing “12 Years a Slave” (2013), the Best Supporting Actor trophy was his first for acting, despite three previous nominations (plus an additional two in Picture).
He could easily have become just another pretty Hollywood face – a flash in the pan romantic lead or action star. However Pitt studied acting and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the industry’s most versatile and most well-recognized actors, as well as one of the most influential as the owner of a successful award-winning production company.
Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield, Mo, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities in high school, and went on to college with a major in journalism.

"Alien" is a watershed horror and science-fiction film; many have tried to recapture its foreboding magic but director Ridley Scott is confident no one can beat his classic.
The film follows the seven-person crew of the space mining vessel Nostromo; in the 22nd century, space travel is the job of regular working Joes. They pick up a distress signal and, in investigating, pick up an eighth passenger: the titular beast, a phallic and half-cybernetic horror spawned from a human (specifically John Hurt's Kane) but utterly devoid of humanity. The alien blends into the leaky, industrial hull of the Nostromo, and as it picks off the crew one by one, their goal shifts from destroying it to escaping it.
Next year marks the 45th birthday of "Alien," but it still holds up no matter its age. However, in the decades since its release, more than half the cast has passed on.

Robert Redford has had a highly successful 50-year career as an actor dating back to early appearances on television (most famously as “Death” in an episode of The Twilight Zone”), then successfully on Broadway and finally as one of the biggest movie stars of all time.
His acting career has included two outstanding films with Paul Newman, Oscar Best Picture nominee “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and Best Picture champ “The Sting.” He has explored politics with “The Candidate” and “All the President’s Men.” And he starred in Best Picture winner “Out of Africa” with Meryl Streep among his many roles. All of these movies and more are now featured in our photo gallery of his 15 best films (view above).

Given that the Sundance Kid — aka Robert Redford — has been acting since he was 21, racking up 78 credits in film and on TV along the way (according to IMDb), no one can say he hasn’t paid his dues and then some. That Redford received just one acting Oscar nomination for his con man in 1972’s “The Sting” seems, well, a little stingy. However, the Academy voters have a habit of shunning so-called “pretty boys” – just look at what Leonardo DiCaprio suffered through in “The Revenant” to deserve winning the gold on his fifth try.
However, what this Electric Cowboy did Not say is that he is quitting directing. In fact, Redford has impressed Oscar most when he goes behind the camera and calls the shots – even if a few of his movies possess dubious reputations. Tour our photo gallery above for a ranking of all nine of his film-making efforts,...

Combat veterans, famously, don’t tend to talk much, if at all, about their experiences of war. At least not to civilians, and maybe not even to their closest relatives. Knowing this, those of us who aren’t veterans tend to have ideas about the things they aren’t discussing. Things like violence and fear and the chaos and insanity of battle. That’s surely a part of it, but in a way it’s also the heightened cinematic version, the one we’ve all gotten from war movies. What it leaves out are the torn-up emotions of soldiers, the lifelong imprint left upon them not just by the cataclysm of war but by their relationship with their fellow soldiers — the loyalty and love, the complex code of liberation and guilt at having survived.

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been a major contributor to the film industry with several notable movies to his name. But Gordon-Levitt believed the industry he was a part of wouldn’t be around much longer thanks to significant changes within its culture.

Perhaps one of his most popular roles was as Tommy Solomon in the hit comedy program 3rd Rock From the Sun. Joseph Gordon-Levitt first learned about Sundance Film Festival while he was making his big screen debut in 1992’s “A River Runs Through It.” That’s where the film’s director (and Sundance’s founder) Robert Redford gave him a T-shirt emblazoned with the festival’s moniker. But it wasn’t until he was a bit older that he fully understood the rebel spirit that has made Sundance a destination for indie auteurs and artists for decades.
“As a 14-year old, I started watching ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ ‘Sex Lies and Video Tape,’ ‘Swingers,’ ‘Sling Blade,’ ‘Big Night’ and all these movies that were coming through Sundance,” Gordon-Levitt remembers. “That was my thing in my adolescence. That was what I dreamed of doing.”
But getting up the mountain proved difficult. At that time, Gordon-Levitt was best known for his work in “3rd Rock From the Sun,” a broad comedy about a group of alien explorers.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt started acting professionally when most millennials were still learning basic math. At the tender age of 7, Gordon-Levitt began appearing in popular television shows like "Family Ties," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Quantum Leap," which eventually led to roles in the critically acclaimed movie, "A River Runs Through It," and one of my childhood favorites, "Angels in the Outfield." His most notable performance came in 1996 when he landed the part of Tommy Solomon, an alien teenager in the popular series "3rd Rock from the Sun."
A steady gig on a popular sitcom might be enough for some actors, but Gordon-Levitt had loftier goals for his career. He told Vanity Fair in 2020 that he always wanted to act in "serious movies" that would premiere at independent film festivals and end up in art house theaters, but he was a young, attractive, up-and-coming actor during what /Film's Chris Evangelista calls "The Era Of Cool Shakespeare,...

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.

With a new month upon us, that means Netflix is saying farewell to some favorite films in their library for the time being. And this month, there’s an unusual amount of good movies leaving Netflix. If you’re wondering what to watch before it’s gone, we’ve got a handy guide.
Fans of period dramas and family films, in particular, may find themselves with a lot to catch up on before it leaves Netflix. In the former category, films like “Howard’s End,” “Lawless,” “A River Runs Through It,” “Bright Star,” and “Braveheart” are all expiring in March.
But the Kids and Family section is taking a particularly big hit this month. Animated departures include “Kung Fu Panda,” “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2,” “Happy Feet Two,” a handful of “Pokemon!” movies and series, and meme culture favorite “Bee Movie.” There are also several live-action family classics leaving Netflix in March as well,...

The 29th edition of the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, one of the world’s leading events dedicated to cinematography, returned to fully live status Saturday amid tributes to the power of the image and an homage to the life and work of cinematographer Philippe Rousselot.
The Dp for “A River Runs Through It” and “Dangerous Liaisons” commended his fellow cinematographers for work that transcends culture, border and languages.
Welcoming an audience made up of many of the most celebrated DPs working today, fest director Marek Zydowicz offered historical context at the Jordanki cultural center in the Gothic Polish city of Torun.
Pointing out that “after plagues come a renaissance in art,” he shared with the audience an image of the Beautiful Madonna of Torun, a revolutionary work of sculpture created amid the current of artistic expression that followed the plague of the 1300s.

With its list of new releases for November 2021, Netflix will attempt to bravely step into a post-Squid Game world. Helping it in that mission is a diverse array of original series and films.
On the TV side of things, it’s a good month to be animated with both Big Mouth and F is for Family premiering their fifth seasons (on Nov. 5 and Nov. 25 respectively). It’s the live-action version of an animated classic, however, that might be Netflix’s crown jewel this month. Cowboy Bebop premieres on Nov. 19 and based on the first trailer, it will maintain the spirit of the beloved anime. And speaking of big hits, Tiger King 2 is set to arrive on Nov. 17.

Tom Skerritt is the very definition of a veteran actor. Mash, Alien, Steel Magnolias, Top Gun, A River Runs Through It, and countless other supporting credits in films and television grace his esteemed resume, plus an Emmy for Picket Fences. But never a lead role in a feature film! Until now. East Of The Mountains just might be 88-year-old Tom Skerritt’s best work on the screen. It’s an assured, vulnerable, simple yet extremely powerful performance, utilizing, as he describes in this episode, his “less is more” approach to acting. He talks about what he learned mentoring with Robert Altman and […]

Crimson Gold (Jafar Panahi)
Following his early days of being an assistant for Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi’s career soon blossomed, leading to a few collaborations between the two monumental figures of Iranian cinemas––one of which, Crimson Gold, is now available on The Criterion Channel. The masterful 2003 character study, scripted by Kiarostami after he told the tenets of the story to Panahi while sitting in traffic, stars unprofessional actor Hossain Emadeddin in his sole performance. Following a pizza delivery driver who witnesses the sharp class divide and political terror playing out in his society, Kiarostami and Panahi brilliantly preview the brutal ending from the start as the pieces then cogently and subtly fall into place as to why a man would...

Few performers manage to maintain a high profile in the public eye and are as coveted by filmmakers as Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Having started as a child actor in hit films like “A River Runs Through It” and “Angels in the Outfield,” Gordon-Levitt came into adulthood while starring in the iconic sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun” and the fan-favorite rom-com “10 Things I Hate About You.” It was in the 2000s where his star rose into the stratosphere, turning in widely acclaimed work in films such as “Mysterious Skin,” “Inception,” and his frequent collaborations with Rian Johnson, including the lead roles in “Brick” and “Looper.” This is all without mentioning his Golden Globe-nominated performances in “(500) Days of Summer” and “50/50,” or his directorial debut firestorm, “Don Jon,” which Gordon-Levitt also wrote and starred in, or the fact that Gordon-Levitt is as talented a musician and singer as he is a performer and filmmaker.

Reservoir Docs has announced its new project, a feature-length documentary about Oscar-winning cinematographer Philippe Rousselot called “A Look Through His Lens.” The independent international sales company will finance and launch worldwide sales for the film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“A Look Through His Lens” will cover Rousselot’s life, career and cinematography techniques, which he cultivated as a director of photography for both film and digital formats. Furthermore, it will dive into the impact of his contribution to the Cinema du Look movement and how his use of image and color captivated directors worldwide. In a statement, the filmmakers said their “goal is to create a narrative that is archival and educational in nature that can be accessed for generations to come.” It’s part of Reservoir Doc’s mission to specialize in documentaries about cinema and look at how cinema is a strong reflection of our society.

“It’s such a wide spectrum of emotion that goes through the story,” explains composer Mark Isham of “The Nevers.” Indeed, the HBO drama crosses the boundaries of many genres to tell a science fiction laced epic within its Victorian era setting. The acclaimed composer wanted to hint at elements of sorrow, danger, and magic in his score, to reflect a show that carries a “general sense of mysteriousness.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Viewers don’t have to wait long before becoming immersed in Isham’s sonic landscape. The pilot episode begins with an extended wordless montage where the major characters of “The Nevers” are introduced. “It took me a little while just to get over the sheer terror of a challenge like that,” Isham admits. Luckily that fear gave way to a realization: “this is a composer’s dream,” he says. “I don’t have any competition,...

The music branch has been notorious for high-profile disqualifications and ineligibilities in the last few years. Last week, the BAFTA Awards website released a draft of what films are eligible for the upcoming show, set to take place on April 11, with nominations being announced on March 9. The list notes a film’s eligibility during the newly revamped round one voting period, which began on Jan. 12 and will conclude on Jan. 26.

Despite amassing more than 70 credits, this year’s recipient of the Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Award, Philippe Rousselot, shows no signs of stopping. As he tells Variety from his house in Brittany, he just can’t.
“Once you have piled up enough films, the decision is made. They needed to give this award to someone and I am very glad to accommodate,” he jokes. “Other people want us to retire, but it’s never a personal decision among DPs. We never stop working. We can’t get enough of it!”
Counting a BAFTA and two Césars among his many accolades, Rousselot was also nominated for an Academy Award three times, winning for Robert Redford’s “A River Runs Through It” in 1992.
“I was at the Oscar ceremony when ‘Hope and Glory’ was nominated. Of course we didn’t win. I asked John Boorman: ‘What is the importance of this award?...

Emmy-winning composer Mark Isham infused a pop sensibility into his score for the Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere,” which stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Composing the score with Florence + the Machine’s Isabella Summers, the pair blended their individual backgrounds to create something fresh. “There’s a lot of intricate string writing which is part of my background but there’s a very pop sensibility to the whole thing at the same time which she brought to it and then of course just fabulous drums and percussion,” Isham says in an exclusive new webchat with Gold Derby. “A great song, a great pop moment, is a very simple idea.” Watch the video interview above.

Robert Redford celebrated his milestone 80th birthday on Thursday. TheWrap honors the great actor by looking back at 15 of his most memorable movies.
Redford has played just about every character, from a Western outlaw to a talented American skier.
“Barefoot in the Park”
One of Redford’s earlier films before he hit the peak of stardom, it’s an old fashioned romantic comedy about two newlyweds who are the complete opposite of each other.
“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”
Redford plays the Sundance Kid, an outlaw, in this critically acclaimed Western.
The film won 4 Academy Awards and is ranked as the 50th greatest American film by the American Film Institute.
“Downhill Racer”
Redford plays an overly confident skier who is incapable of understanding or being involved in anything but himself.
Roger Ebert called it “the best movie ever made about sports — without really being about sports at all.”

That could change this year as he’s already won a Golden Globe for his stuntman role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He’s now nominated for the seventh time at the Academy Awards, this time as Best Supporting Actor. It’s his fourth as an actor along with three for producing and “Cool World” (1992). These two flopped so badly they could have derailed his career; however, he proved he could handle meatier roles with “A River Runs Through It” (1992) and could hold his own with blockbuster powerhouses like Tom Cruise in “An Interview with a Vampire” (1994), and Pitt gradually became of the most critically and commercially successful actors of his generation.

He could easily have become just another pretty Hollywood face – a flash in the pan romantic lead or action star. However, Brad Pitt studied acting and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the industry’s most versatile and most well-recognized actors, as well as one of the most influential as the owner of a successful award-winning production company.
Pitt celebrates his 56th birthday on December 18, 2019. Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield, Mo, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities in high school, and went on to college with a major in journalism. However, restlessness and a love of movies spurred him to move to Los Angeles.

When it comes to the Sundance Film Festival, Redford stepped down and left the Sundance organization in 1993 because he feared “that his political enemies would accuse him of using the institution as a mechanism for promoting his political agenda in the culture.” As U.S. president, Redford stayed committed to the arts by hiring acclaimed photographer Andres Serrano “to rebuild the National Endowment for the Arts following decades of reduction and...
