Joseph Quinn’s popularity increased following his scene-stealing role as Eddie in Stranger Things season 4. Before that, the actor had small roles in films like Overlord, and Hoard. He played Arthur Havisham in the BBC series Dickensian and Leonard Bast in Howards End. He is currently one of the rising stars whom people are excited about.
Joseph Quinn’s breakout role was in Stranger Things as Eddie Munson
Quinn landed his biggest role as he has been tapped in to play Johnny Storm/ Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. In the current climate where the discourse around superhero movie fatigue has become notoriously popular, Quinn promised that his Fantastic Four film will be a unique Marvel film that will change that perception.

Joseph Quinn became a worldwide star overnight when he featured as Eddie Munson in the fourth season of Stranger Things. The British actor had been a part of shows such as Game of Thrones and BBC’s Howards End before he was cast as the Metallica-loving oddball in the Netflix series. He will be seen in A Quiet Place: Day One next.
Quinn was also cast as Johnny Storm a.k.a The Human Torch in the MCU’s upcoming The Fantastic Four. He would be sharing screen space with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. While the gang would be making their MCU debut, the role of Johnny Storm has been depicted twice before, with the first being portrayed by Chris Evans.

The official logline of the new series states, “When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbor Sarah Tucker (Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson). Emma Thompson is the two-time Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate who has left her indelible mark as an actress and a writer for more than 30 years. Let’s take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 15, 1959, in Paddington, London, England, Thompson broke through with American audiences thanks to her Oscar-winning lead turn in the sumptuous Merchant-Ivory production “Howards End” (1992). She reunited with the filmmakers – along with her costar Anthony Hopkins – for “The Remains of the Day” (1993), which brought her a second Best Actress bid. That same year, she competed in the supporting category for “In the Name of the Father,” pulling off the rare feat of snagging two acting nominations in the same year. She returned to the Oscar race both as a performer and as a writer for the Jane Austin adaptation “Sense and Sensibility” (1995), for which she earned a Best Actress nomination...

Last year, Frasier Crane returned to TV screens in the "Frasier" revival series. While it struggled to capture the magic of the original series, "Frasier" 2023 certainly had some high points. The festive season finale was one of the better Christmas episodes, and the show handled the passing of Martin Crane actor John Mahoney beautifully. Then there were the guest stars, which included actress Peri Gilpin, who played Frasier's producer on the original sitcom, and Bebe Neuwirth, who played Lilith Sternin on both "Frasier" and "Cheers."
Lilith debuted in the 1986 "Cheers" episode "Second Time Around," becoming a series regular and eventually starting a relationship with Kelsey Grammer's Frasier before the pair got married. By the end of the series they had broken up, and when "Frasier" debuted in 1993 the titular doctor had moved to Seattle while Lilith stayed in Boston with her and her ex-husband's son, Freddy. The films in contention for the 2024 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our odds currently indicate that “American Fiction” (7/2) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “Oppenheimer” (18/5), “Barbie” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Zone of Interest” (9/2).
This marks only the 14th instance in 96 years of all five Best Adapted Screenplay-nominated films also being in the running for Best Picture. Prior to the last time in 2017 – the year “Moonlight” achieved dual victories – this had happened only twice during the 21st century (2011; 2013) and once during the latter half of the 20th (1965). The bulk of cases occurred almost annually from 1934 to 1943, with the only inapplicable year being 1937.
Respective “The Zone of Interest” and “Oppenheimer” writers Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan are simultaneously nominated for Best Director, while Nolan is also set to face off against “American Fiction” scripter Cord Jefferson in the Best Picture race.

Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Peter Rice will produce. A24 will handle the global release of the film. As with any Garland project, details behind what the film is about are being shrouded in secrecy.

December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)
While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?
The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Malachi Kirby, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall star in the film.
Though the opening screening happens on Jan. 5, the festival really kicks off the night before with the Film Awards, a starry ceremony that will shine a spotlight on Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things star Emma Stone, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy,...

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. There’s often been unfair snobbery about the films of Merchant Ivory, the production banner founded in 1961 by producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory, which gives Stephen Soucy’s entertaining documentary study its title. The British costume drama was widely considered a wheezing genre — fusty, middlebrow and too calcified in its literary sources to acquire much cinematic vitality — when A Room with a View came along in 1986 and became a global art-house crossover hit. At their best, notably in Howards End and Remains of the Day, Merchant Ivory’s films stand the test of time as influential works that removed the starch from the stodgy period piece.
Contemporaries reductively dismissed their output as “Laura Ashley filmmaking,” referencing the design firm known for its pretty Romantic Victorian inspirations. But Merchant Ivory did more than anyone from the mid-1980s to the early ‘90s to popularize and legitimize the thematically and emotionally rich costume drama.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from “A Hundred Years Ago,” the eighth episode of Season 2 of “And Just Like That,” now streaming on Max.
I was as skeptical as anyone when it became clear that Aidan was returning to “And Just Like That.”
The “Sex and the City” character, Carrie’s other great love and one who, in his status as an obvious second choice to Big, wasn’t really so great, seemed to have run out of dramatic possibility a while ago. His appearance in “Sex and the City 2,” with a credibility-straining chance meeting in Abu Dhabi, seemed only to be happening to cast into relief what worked, and what didn’t, in Carrie’s marriage. Aidan’s own qualities as anything other than not-Big didn’t meaningfully enter the story.

It’s 10 a.m. in Sydney, where Hayley Atwell is preparing to walk the red carpet as the “Mission: Impossible” crew’s newest member, joining producer and star Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie’s ensemble of battle-hardened actors.
“This is a pure cinematic experience. It’s unadulterated entertainment, and of a huge scale,” Atwell says to Variety about “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which finally hit theaters on July 12 following a two-year delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Flashy events like the Australia premiere (which featured a fireworks spectacle in honor of Cruise’s 61st birthday on July 3) mark the end of a four-year odyssey that pushed Atwell’s limits physically — leaving her hanging inside a train car that’s gone from horizontal to vertical, gripping anything nailed to the floor/wall/ceiling lest she fall to her death (or at least the safety rigging below) — and...

The effect of The Simpsons on pop culture can’t be overstated. In the early nineties, the show tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in a way few others had before. Indeed, no other cartoon show could reasonably emulate it- but Hollywood couldn’t help but try. Capitol Critters, Family Dog, and Fish Police were just a few of the shows that tried to be “the new Simpsons.” Still, the only one that really came close was ABC’s The Critic, starring the voice of Jon Lovitz as Jay Sherman, perhaps the world’s least-loved film critic and the subject of this Gone But Not Forgotten episode.
Unlike other wannabe animated hits, The Critic could boast a legit connection to The Simpsons, with it also being a production of James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films. At the same time, creators Al Jean and Mike Reiss had been showrunners on The Simpsons during...

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

Director James Ivory became an art house favorite thanks to a series of lofty literary adaptations produced by his partner Ismail Merchant. He shows no signs of slowing down in his twilight years. In fact, he recently become the oldest Oscar winner in history for penning the script to “Call Me by Your Name” (2017).
Although the majority of his work takes place overseas, Ivory was born in Berkeley, CA, in 1928. After cutting his teeth as a documentarian, he kicked off a professional and romantic relationship with Merchant, and together they formed the production company Merchant Ivory. Together, with screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala serving as the third member of their team, they produced a series of acclaimed films based on the works of E. M. Forster, Henry James, Kazuo Ishiguro and other seemingly unadaptable sources.

The cast of Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel continues to grow more star-studded, with Connie Nielsen and Joseph Quinn in talks to join Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan and Denzel Washington in the film.
The Paramount movie follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office. The film starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vows revenge against Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Nielsen played Maximus’ lover Lucilla, a role which she’ll reprise in the yet-to-be-titled sequel.
Since Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator,” the sequel is focused Lucilla’s son Lucius, played by Academy Award nominee Mescal. His fellow 2023 Academy Award nominee Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta, with Quinn set to join the project as Emperor Caracalla. With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.
Including the opening and closing series, Amazon’s “Greek Salad” and Netflix’s “Transatlantic,” nearly all the global streamers have titles in the lineup, from Apple TV+’s “Drops of God” and Paramount+’s “Fleeting Lies.” The lineup also features some A-List international writing talents, such as the U.K.’s Jack Thorne and Israel’s Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen, whose “The Virtues” and “No Man’s Land” rank among the most memorable of recent Series Mania competition titles, and closing the festival, out of competition, “Unorthodox’s” Anna Wenger.”Fleeting Lies” also represents one of the first series from Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo label in Madrid,...

When writer-director Sarah Polley won her well-deserved Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards last night, her speech started with a clever callout. "I want to thank the Academy for not being mortally offended by the words 'women' and 'talking' put so close together like that!" she said, before speaking about the themes of democratic womanhood in Miriam Toews' novel. While the reference to "Women Talking" could easily apply to a half-dozen different areas of improvement the Oscars still has to work on when it comes to supporting women, it also gets to the truth of Polley's category: in over 90 years, Polley is only the 10th woman to receive the trophy. This is also the first time in Oscar history that it's gone to a woman two years in a row.

Sarah Polley’s Oscar win gives Best Adapted Screenplay back-to-back female champs for the first time
“Women Talking”? More like women (are) winning. Sarah Polley took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar on Sunday, making her one of the category’s few female winners and giving the category back-to-back female champs for the first time.
With Polley’s victory, Best Adapted Screenplay has now gone to women nine times — and twice to the same person, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who triumphed for 1986’s “A Room with a View” and 1992’s “Howards End.” Polley joins Jhabvala as one of four women who’ve won as solo writers. The others are Emma Thompson (1995’s “Sense and Sensibility”) and last year’s winner, Sian Heder (“Coda”).
The category’s other female winners prevailed as part of writing teams. Sarah Y. Mason was the first woman to win adapted screenplay for co-writing 1933’s “Little Women” with her husband Victor Heerman. Claudine West shared her award for 1942’s “Mrs. Miniver” with George Froeschel,...

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” Our current odds show “Elvis” (10/3) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (37/10), “Babylon” (9/2), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2), and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is her 12th and could result in her fourth win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), and “Cruella” (2022). She would be only the fifth costumer to achieve as many victories, after Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Milena Canonero, and Colleen Atwood. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011).

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Glass Onion,” “Living,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “Women Talking.” Our odds currently indicate that “Women Talking” (10/3) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (37/10), “Glass Onion” (9/2), “Top Gun: Maverick” (9/2), and “Living” (9/2).
“Glass Onion” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” which are, respectively, the first sequels to 2019’s “Knives Out” and 1986’s “Top Gun,” are the first pair of continuation films ever nominated against each other in this category. Included among the seven sequels that have contended here before are winners “The Godfather Part II” (1975) and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and nominees “Before Sunset” (2005), “Toy Story 3” (2011), “Before Midnight” (2014), “Logan” (2018), and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (2021).
Of the 11 individual writers in this year’s lineup, only Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”) has competed for this particular award before.

Winning an Oscar is not easy and Emma Thompson is opening up about campaigning to win an Academy Award and how it made her “seriously ill.”
“Both times I had to do the Oscars, I got seriously ill,” Thompson said in an interview with Radio Times. “I found the pressure and glare of it too much. It’s astonishing. And then afterwards, you want to lie down in a dark room. You think, ‘Please don’t ask me any questions or make me talk about myself.’ I quickly developed a sort of allergy to that part of the job.”
Thompson has been nominated for the Academy Awards five times. She has earned two Oscars, the first one in 1993 for Howards End and her second one in 1996 for Sense and Sensibility.

Entertainment One has debuted the first trailer and poster for ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry,’ in cinemas in the UK and Ireland from April 28th 2023.
Based on the bestselling book of the same name by award-winning author Rachel Joyce, who also wrote the screenplay, the film is directed by BAFTA winner Hettie Macdonald.
The film tells the story of a man who leaves his seaside town in South Devon to deliver a message to an old friend. Harold Fry was never meant to be a hero. He’s an unremarkable man who has failed at all the important things: being a husband, a father and a friend. Now, well into his 60s, he is content to fade quietly into the background of life. But when Harold learns his friend Queenie is dying, he is moved to act. He leaves home, walking to the post box to send her a...

“I really, really am completely thrilled that we have been noticed,” remarks Jenny Beavan about her Oscar nomination for the costume design for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” The film, a delightful tale in which a working-class London widow (Leslie Manville) pursues her dream of owning a House of Dior haute couture dress, proved a unique challenge for the costumer, who had to furnish the designer gowns “on a modest budget, in covid, in a city I didn’t know with a crew I never met before, in Hungarian.” As a result, she expresses how she feels “incredibly proud” of the work and is thrilled to share this acknowledgement with her crew. It’s been a rocky road for “Women Talking,” having underperformed or been overlooked completely at various precursors, but it managed to earn two Oscar nominations: Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sarah Polley. The latter category has long been predicted to be the one that the drama could win and it is currently out in front with 16/5 odds. If Polley does pull through, she’ll join a short list of not just female winners in the category but an even shorter list of female writers who’ve won individually.
As is the case with most non-gendered categories, female champs are rather infrequent in Best Adapted Screenplay. In the 94-year history of the Oscars, the award has gone to women just eight times — and twice to the same person, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who prevailed for 1986’s “A Room with a View” and 1992’s “Howards End.” Jhabvala is one of...

Some well-established actors and a composer achieved unusual Oscar feats, while a young and upcoming actress had a surprising win. Enjoy our flashback 30 years to the Academy Awards ceremony of 1993.
Hosting for the fourth consecutive year, Billy Crystal began the 65th Academy Awards ceremony by entering astride a gigantic Oscar statue pulled by . . . the Best Supporting Actor winner from the year before, Jack Palance, who had memorably shown off his impressive push-up abilities during his acceptance speech.
Five diverse but memorable films made it into the top category of the night, and none swept; in fact, at the end of the event, 11 movies had won one award each. One of the biggest box office draws of 1992 earned a Best Picture nomination; however, “A Few Good Men” failed to claim any of its four bids. Five diverse but memorable films made it into the top category of the night, and none swept; in fact, at the end of the event, 11 movies had won one award each. One of the biggest box office draws of 1992 earned a Best Picture nomination; however, “A Few Good Men” failed to claim any of its four bids. Variety has selected its list of 10 Brits to Watch for 2023, an honor the publication has been bestowing since 2013 on artists across all entertainment media. Past honorees include Harry Styles, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jodie Turner-Smith.
The honorees will be profiled in the Feb. 8 issue of Variety and feted at the seventh annual Newport Beach Film Festival U.K. Honors, to be held at the Londoner Hotel in London.
“With film and television production roaring in the U.K., the royals constantly garnering international chatter and the search for a new James Bond heating up, there’s another fact of U.K. entertainment life that shouldn’t be overlooked: the U.K. new-creatives well is fairly overflowing,” said Steven Gaydos, Variety‘s senior VP of global content and executive editor. “Always a dynamic source of exciting fresh voices, one look at Variety’s 2023 10 Brits to Watch proves that Britannia remains a vital center of artistic regeneration.

At the virtual Sundance Film Festival in January and then again in June, Emma Thompson made the press rounds for her leading role in Searchlight Pictures’ “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” As usual, Thompson completely charmed her way through promoting her winning little indie picture, even with the expected media scrutiny of how “brave” she was to take on her role. (Male actors are rarely referred to as such when they play sixtysomething men who like sex.)
The performance, in which she portrays a sharp-minded but body-insecure widow who hires a sensitive, confident male escort (Daryl McCormack) on a quest for many kinds of fulfillment, earned Thompson some of the best reviews of a long and storied career that has often prompted journalists to use phrases like “a long and storied career.” She’s that good, that often. And yet, as 2023 approaches and voters cast their ballots, Thompson went...

Months after getting killed by demon bats in the Upside Down, Joseph Quinn is looking to fight some more monsters. The “Stranger Things” actor is in talks to star in the upcoming “A Quiet Place” spinoff film, IndieWire has confirmed.
Titled “A Quiet Place: Day One,” the film follows a different set of characters than those seen in the first two installments, with Oscar winner and “Black Panther” star Lupita Nyong’o confirmed to play the film’s lead character. Michael Sarnoski, who made his feature film debut with the acclaimed Nicolas Cage culinary drama “Pig” last year, is set to direct. The film’s premise is based on an idea developed by John Krasinski, who helmed the first two installments.
The first two “Quiet Place” films were released in 2018 and 2021. The films starred Krasinski and his real-life wife Emily Blunt as the heads of a family struggling to survive in...

A couple weeks ago, it was announced that Lupita Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for her performance in 12 Years a Slave, delivered a memorable villain performance in the Jordan Peele horror movie Us, and can be seen in this month’s blockbuster release Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was in final negotiations to star in the A Quiet Place spin-off A Quiet Place: Day One. Now Deadline reports that Joseph Quinn, who recently earned a huge fan following through his performance as Eddie Munson in the most recent season of Stranger Things, is in negotiations to take a leading role in A Quiet Place: Day One alongside Nyong’o.
Paramount has the film scheduled for a March 8, 2024 theatrical release.
Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) was attached to write and direct A Quiet Place: Day One for a while, but when he dropped out he was replaced by Pig director Michael Sarnoski.

Exclusive: Following his star-making role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, Joseph Quinn has found his next big project as he is in negotiations to for a leading role opposite Lupita Nyong’o, who is starring, in Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One. The spinoff will be directed and written by Pig helmer Michael Sarnoski.
Not much more is known about this project other than it not being a threequel but rather a spinoff, based on an idea from John Krasinski, who directed and starred in the first two films. The hope is this film will help set up a potential Quiet Place universe that the studio can build on for years to come. It also is known that, while not out of the question, Emily Blunt and Krasinski likely won’t reprise their roles in this installment. The film is set to bow on March 8, 2024.

Emma Thompson revealed that she was “utterly blind” to her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh’s affairs with actresses like Helena Bonham Carter.
“I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set,” she told The New Yorker. “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”
Thompson and Branagh first met on the set of the series Fortunes of War, and they were married from 1989 to 1995. In 1994, Branagh began a relationship with Bonham Carter while they filmed the Frankenstein movie together.

To make matters even messier, Bonham Carter and Thompson had previously worked together in 1992 on their film, Howards End.
Branagh’s relationships with other women and the end of their marriage understandably took a huge toll on Thompson’s mental health after the fact.

English novelist E.M. Forster never married, and why would he? The author of “Maurice” and “Howards End” was gay, reportedly maintaining relations with a much-younger police officer over the span of four decades. That man did marry, and history has it that his wife knew their secret. In “My Policeman,” this unconventional arrangement lends itself quite nicely to one of those slightly stuffy yet respectable period pieces of the kind that Ismail Merchant and James Ivory have made of Forster’s novels, jumping back and forth in time between the sexy stuff and the maudlin way it resolves itself so many years later.
It all starts with a special delivery to a dreary seaside cottage: An invalid arrives at the house of retired policeman Tom (Linus Roache) and his schoolteacher wife Marion (Gina McKee). It was her idea to take in the unpleasant and largely uncooperative Patrick Hazelwood, whose presence clearly annoys her husband.
