Robert De Niro has been working in Hollywood for almost six decades now, with eight Oscar nominations to his name and two wins. His most noted collaboration has been with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he has done 10 films, including their latest partnership on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was released October 20 through Apple Original Films. In celebration of the western crime epic, let’s take a look back at De Niro’s eight Oscar nominations in 45 years; seven for acting and one for producing.
His first Oscar nomination and victory came on the heels of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime film “The Godfather” with the equally successful second installment “The Godfather Part II” (1974), in which De Niro plays a young Vito Corleone, played by Oscar winner Marlon Brando in the first movie. Just like Brando, De Niro triumphed at the 1975 Oscars for the character, albeit in the...

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.

A winner of Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, Jeremy Irons has been delivering top-notch performances for four decades now, and as he has been turning his sights back to television in recent years. I suspect that we are in store for many more great performances to come.
Irons is one-for-one at the Academy Awards, winning for his only nomination in Barbet Schroeder‘s “Reversal of Fortune” as suspected murderer Claus von Bülow, considered by many to be one of the definitive performances of the ’90s. It also brought Irons his first Golden Globe Award. Irons is also perfect at the Tony Awards, winning the Best Actor award for Tom Stoppard‘s 1984 production of “The Real Thing”. And he was won three of the five Emmy Awards for which he has been nominated, both as an actor and as a narrator (especially with that voice).

Saltburn, the second film written and directed by Emerald Fennell — three years after Promising Young Woman, for which she won the best original screenplay Oscar — had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Palm Theatre on Thursday evening. And the picture, which Amazon plans to put into limited theatrical release on Nov. 24, and then open wide on Dec. 1, certainly left people talking.
A pitch-black comedy packed with sex, violence and music, like Fennell’s first film, Saltburn, which is set in the first decade of this century, chronicles the efforts of one young Oxford student (Barry Keoghan, an Oscar nominee earlier this year for The Banshees of Inisherin) to ingratiate himself into the life of another (Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi). The latter invites the former to spend time with his extremely wealthy family — including his mother (Rosamund Pike), father (Richard E. Grant) and sister (Alison Oliver) — at their mansion,...

Surprise! Legendary director Barbet Schroeder, in Locarno to introduce his latest doc “Ricardo and Painting,” was greeted with a Special Tribute Award before the screening.
“Is this for the film?” Shroeder, a modest man, asked on stage. “No,” said Locarno festival director Giona Nazzaro. “It’s for being Barbet Schroeder.”
Despite focusing on harsher subjects in his previous documentaries, “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait,” “Terror’s Advocate” or “The Venerable W.,” this time Schroeder decided to follow painter Ricardo Cavallo.
“I have already done my ‘Trilogy of Evil.’ I could continue: the world is full of bad people. But then there was this friend of mine, who I thought was such a good person,” he tells Variety.
Cavallo, convinced that “true life exists in creation,” could teach anyone how to change their way of seeing, claims Schroeder, sacrificing everything for his art.

“There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:

Ed Pressman was cool. And he had taste. He didn’t care what other people thought of a given project. If he thought it was cool, that was enough. He kept his own counsel; he was quiet. But if he wanted something, he let you know. He was not one to take no for an answer.
This helps to explain how he came to produce some 80 films over the decades. And he had not slowed down in recent years. When Ed and his son Sam came to IndieWire’s Cannes party two years ago, Ed found a quiet corner and worked his phone. Pressman died January 17 of respiratory failure, at age 79.

Brendan Fraser has been the Best Actor Oscar frontrunner the entire season for his performance in “The Whale” and remains the odds-on favorite to win. On the surface, this doesn’t seem surprising — it’s a baity, transformative turn — but anyone following this closely knows that his chances took a hit when “The Whale” was snubbed in Best Picture. If Fraser does take home the gold, he’ll be one of the few and far between Best Actor champs for a non-Best Picture nominee and the first in 13 years.

In the 125 years since the first play based on the life of 17th century author Cyrano de Bergerac premiered, the classic underdog tale’s eternal relevance has been proven time and time again. Its simple love triangle premise has served as the basis for many stage and screen adaptations, two of which captured the attention of Oscar voters. José Ferrer and Gérard Depardieu both earned academy recognition for their portrayals of de Bergerac, and now Peter Dinklage is gunning for a Best Actor bid for starring in the new film “Cyrano.” If he succeeds, the character will become one of only a handful in Oscars history to have inspired three nominations.
Dinklage, who bagged four Emmys during his eight-season tenure on “Game of Thrones,” first played de Bergerac during the Off-Broadway run of the stage musical from which his film derives. His potential Oscar nomination would come 71 years after Ferrer’s,...

Abrego made the announcement of Pizzi’s appointment on Wednesday. She was most recently president of entertainment and development at Bunim-Murray. The move comes as part of a reorganization following the announcement in November that Bunim-Murray would be part of Abrego’s oversight.
“Julie brings a wealth of unscripted production experience to her new role and has been a part of the Bunim/Murray family for more than 20 years, making her the ideal candidate to lead the studio into the next decade,” Abrego said. “Bunim-Murray is one...

The 63rd Academy Awards took place on March 25, 1991. For the first time in 60 years, a western took home the big prize, a first-time director beat out a veteran, the acting awards were split among four different films and an 80s pop idol caused a sensation. For the second consecutive year, Billy Crystal hosted the event, opening the night by riding in on a horse, which was most likely a plug for his upcoming film “City Slickers,” but also seemed to foreshadow the theme for the evening.
“Dances with Wolves” became the first western since “Cimarron” 60 years earlier to win Best Picture. Kevin Costner‘s epic adventure came into the night with the most nominations at 12, and walked away with the most statues at seven. Costner holds the very rare distinction of landing both a Best Director and a Best Actor nomination for the same film, while his win in the...

When he came onboard as artistic director at the Deauville American Film Festival in 1995, Bruno Barde went about retooling the event.
He started by introducing the official competition — to showcase new voices in American independent cinema before a predominantly French jury — and thought to make his vision for the festival clear with an unmistakable visual.
“I saw us as a French perspective on American cinema,” Barde says. “So it’s no accident that the poster [that year] featured a bridge linking Deauville to New York.”
In planning this year’s poster, which features a pensive Kirk Douglas in profile, the festival chief wanted to convey a similar set of intentions.
“When Kirk passed away [in February], I knew we had to honor him. We put him on the poster, with that look towards the future, because he was a man who always looked to the future, who was also a kind of bridge.

At first glance, the Emmys are giving a lot of love to young performers including Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”). But looks can be deceiving because there are several Emmy veterans in their 70s, 80s and even 90s nipping at these whippersnappers’ heels in the quest for the gold statute.
Cicely Tyson is the oldest acting Emmy nominee at 95. She’s nominated for the fifth time for guest role in a drama series as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and is also being inducted into the academy Hall of Fame. Tyson, a Tony (“A Trip to Bountiful”) and honorary Oscar-winner, has been nominated for the Emmy 16 times, winning three: for lead in a drama and actress of the year for CBS’ 1974 “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and supporting actress in a miniseries or...

Exclusive: The Telluride Film Festival was expected to start next week on September 3 and play, as usual, all through the Labor Day weekend. Sadly, the coronavirus pandemic curtailed those plans and the festival was forced to cancel this year’s edition. However, Telluride did put out the schedule of films that had been selected, and on September 11 will host a “drive-in” screening at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena of the new Fox Searchlight film, Nomadland starring Frances McDormand directed by Chloe Zhao. And they actively hope that some of the other films on their list find an audience, and in some cases even distribution in order to find that audience.
I caught one of those films, the fascinating new documentary Dear Mr. Brody, which was to have had its world premiere at Telluride and was planning to use that showcase to entice buyers. Cinetic is selling it and is just...

“I like my sleep,” admits Jeremy Irons about whether he plans to participate in the Emmys next month, which will for the first time be a live virtual ceremony across countless locations worldwide. While the actor is thrilled to be nominated for an Emmy, he says its unlikely he’ll be able to be on camera in the middle of the night where he lives in Ireland. “It goes out at three o’clock in the morning my time, so I shan’t be up for it, I shall probably leave some sort of message and wait and see when I wake up!”
“But ‘Watchmen’ got 26 nominations, which is amazing. Had I not got one, I would’ve been a bit peeved,” he laughs. This is Irons’ fifth career Emmy nomination, this time for HBO’s “Watchmen,” which leads all programs at the Emmys this year with a whopping 26 nominations.

Rachel Weisz will star in a TV series re-imagining of Dead Ringers, director David Cronenberg’s classic 1988 film, according to The Wrap.
Amazon Studios and Annapurna TV are backing the project, which Weisz will also be an executive producer on, along with Normal People lead writer Alice Birch. The series will mark the Oscar-winning actress’ first role for TV.
In the original film, Jeremy Irons played successful twin gynecologists named Elliot and Beverly Mantle, who share some of their patients sexually without the women knowing which man is which. But when Beverly becomes emotionally attached to an actress (Genevieve Bujold), the co-dependent twins descend into depression, sexual depravity and drug addiction with harrowing results.
The new version, described as a gender-swapped “modern take” on the material, will feature Weisz as the identical Mantle sisters, who “share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

Icarus Films will be bringing Barbara Schroeder’s documentary “The Venerable W.” to DVD on May 19th.
Synopsis
Evil comes in many forms. In Myanmar, it manifests in the casual racism and Islamophobia of influential, charismatic Burmese Buddhist monk Ashin Wirathu. Through interviews with international journalists and community leaders who protest against Wirathu’s views, shocking amateur footage of the persecution of the Rohingya, and through powerful storytelling, acclaimed director Barbet Schroeder slowly, but inexorably, builds his case. Perhaps most damning of all are the interviews with the man himself; couching his nationalist fervor in life-affirming rhetoric.
Critics’ Comments

—New York Times

Has there ever been a Power character more slippery than Rashad Tate? In light of the way things play out in this week’s episode, I’d argue that the answer is no: Dude slides out of so many potentially career-ending/throw-you-in-jail situations, I’m starting to think he’s composed entirely of Teflon rubbed in butter.
If you want the quick take-away from the hour, it’s this: Tate didn’t kill Ghost, but he came a lot closer than anyone else has so far. And while his involvement should’ve landed him in prison, it had the opposite...

British actor and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons is to serve as the president of the International Jury at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival this year.
The festival takes place between February 20 and March 1 in the German capital, with Irons and his jury judging the festival’s competition lineup and handing out Golden and Silver Bears. He replaces Juliette Binoche, who performed the same role last year.
Irons, who first attended Berlinale in 2011 with his film Margin Call, said: “It is with feelings of great pleasure and not inconsiderable honor that I take on the role of president of the International Jury for the Berlinale 2020, a festival that I have admired for so long and that I have always enjoyed attending.”
Berlinale artistic director Carlo Chatrian added: “His talent and the choices he has taken both as an artist and as a citizen make me feel proud to welcome him as...

For Jeremy Irons, playing Adrian Veidt in HBO’s “Watchmen” is a perfect fit considering his fondness for characters with an enigmatic air. In the series, we see Adrian isolated at a manor with clone servants as his only companion, many decades after his fateful decision to transport a giant creature to New York in an attempt to get the world’s nations to stop fighting with each other and face this existential threat together. Even as someone who had no previous attachment to the “Watchmen” graphic novel, which served as inspiration for the HBO drama, Irons was spellbound reading the scripts. “It gives me extra life playing these strange characters,” Irons says in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “It was a great attraction when I read most of my script to discover how bizarre, how covered, how witty, how urbane this man was.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Irons above.

Jeremy Irons, currently appearing in HBO’s “Watchmen” and an Oscar winner with “Reversal of Fortune,” is to star in and produce biopic “Frankel,” which WaZabi Films will be selling at next week’s Afm.
Irons plays horse trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who fought years of failure and illness to make Frankel the greatest champion racehorse of all time, unbeaten in all 14 starts, and bowing out with an emotional victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse.
Irons produces the film, which is expected to go into production in the spring, alongside Andrew Berg and John Sachs of Eclipse Films. It is written by Jim Piddock and directed by Ron Scalpello.
WaZabi will handle worldwide sales on the film, and will co-sell the U.S. with CAA. WaZabi co-presidents Anick Poirier and Lorne Price said they “immediately connected with the determination and resilience of the story.
