Some exciting Star Wars news this morning as The Mandalorian & Grogu has cast its first major supporting role.
As per The InSneider newsletter (and confirmed by multiple trades), 3x Academy Award-nominee Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of Disney and Lucasfilm's next Star Wars film, which is expected to begin production at the tailend of this year.
The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau (Iron Man; Iron Man 2; The Lion King) will helm and produce the upcoming feature, with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni also serving as producers.
Weaver will join a cast headlined by series leading man Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones; The Last of Us; Wonder Woman 1984), who is expected to reprise his role as Din Djarin for the film. My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.
He started out as a clapper boy in the late 1950s, and worked on dozens of distinguished films over the next five decades, as camera assistant, operator and as director of photography leading specialist units. A few titles give a flavour: Battle of Britain (1969); Catch 22 (1970); the television series The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-74), on which he was camera operator for all 52 episodes; three Bond movies in the 1970s; A Bridge Too Far (1977); Krull (1983); A Passage to India (1984); The Jewel of the Nile (1985); King Kong Lives (1986); Gorillas in the Mist (1988); and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009).

Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.
Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.
Peter Debruge (Variety) observed: “Foster proves a...

"Alien" is a watershed horror and science-fiction film; many have tried to recapture its foreboding magic but director Ridley Scott is confident no one can beat his classic.
The film follows the seven-person crew of the space mining vessel Nostromo; in the 22nd century, space travel is the job of regular working Joes. They pick up a distress signal and, in investigating, pick up an eighth passenger: the titular beast, a phallic and half-cybernetic horror spawned from a human (specifically John Hurt's Kane) but utterly devoid of humanity. The alien blends into the leaky, industrial hull of the Nostromo, and as it picks off the crew one by one, their goal shifts from destroying it to escaping it.
Next year marks the 45th birthday of "Alien," but it still holds up no matter its age. However, in the decades since its release, more than half the cast has passed on.

Among the wreckage of an old burnt out car, a blood-soaked mattress is lamentably gotten rid of in Gareth Malone’s hauntingly touching dramatic short Fly-Tipping. Malone, who made the film as part of his Filmmaking Ma at the University of the West of Scotland, quietly immerses the audience in his characters’ struggles with minimal dialogue as he allows the grey scapes and tones of the film to speak for themselves. As Fly-Tipping progresses it’s hard not to battle with intense feelings of empathy, dislike, pity and anger for both of its protagonists but the focus is immovably drawn to Margo, played by Sky Sinclair, who Malone realised was the heart of his film early on in development. Malone wrote the film as a way of exploring his own debates on parenthood and that struggle shines through the emotional tumult depicted within. As Fly-Tipping sets out on the start of its festival journey,...

Colman Domingo is having a moment. The veteran actor has been nominated for two Tonys in his career, but lately it’s his on-screen work that has brought him the most attention. He won his first Emmy in 2022 for guesting on “Euphoria.” He received numerous plaudits for his role in the independent film “Zola.” And he has had additional film credits including Oscar winners “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Next he could become the 13th performer ever nominated for two Oscars in the same year.
As of this writing, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Domingo ranks fourth in our odds for Best Actor for playing the unsung civil rights hero Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” And he places fifth in our odds for Best Supporting Actor for playing Mister in the upcoming musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” But we...

Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!
Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror and drama. Let’s take a look back at 16 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Weaver made her film debut with a walk-on role as Woody Allen‘s girlfriend in “Annie Hall” (1977). Her breakthrough came just two years later for Ridley Scott‘s landmark sci-fi thriller “Alien” (1979). As Ripley, the lone survivor aboard a spacecraft besieged by a snarling, ferocious extra-terrestrial, Weaver broke down barriers for female action stars and helped launch a franchise that led to three sequels: James Cameron‘s “Aliens” (1986), David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Alien: Resurrection” (1997).
“Aliens” brought Weaver her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress, a rarity for the genre. Not to be typecast, she found further success in a variety of roles that didn’t require donning a space helmet.

Rerecording mixer Andy Nelson extended his Oscar nominations tally to 24 with a pair of noms Tuesday for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This extends his record for the most noms in the sound category. Until Tuesday, he also was tied with Randy Newman for the third-most noms among living persons, with 22 noms. He now holds that distinction with 24 .

In order to avoid splitting votes and allow for the possibility of netting two acting nominations this year, Searchlight Pictures will campaign Andrew Garfield’s performance as televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” for supporting actor consideration, based on an invite that was sent to BAFTA voters for an upcoming virtual screening of the film.
Following the biopic’s bow at the Toronto International Film Festival and modest box office receipts, its Oscar prospects have been seemingly on the fringe, but the film, directed by Michael Showalter, could make a roaring comeback during the season. Garfield’s co-star Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife Tammy Faye, will angle for lead actress, and could become a central piece of a competitive race that includes Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”).

Oscars voters have always loved seeing actors whose startling physical transformations come after countless hours in the makeup chair.
After Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Charlize Theron (“Monster”) won Oscars for their impressively-altered looks, Jessica Chastain could be on a similar path for her role as the media-loving televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in Michael Showalter’s “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Following a world bow at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Searchlight Pictures dramedy, echoing previous Oscar embraces such as “I, Tonya,” could make Chastain a contender for her third nomination, and could bring in a few other notices if campaigned correctly.
Chastain’s previous Oscar noms came in supporting actress for “The Help” (2011) and actress for “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012). She also serves as one of the producers for the film, along with Kelly Carmichael, Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane. While “Tammy Faye” could...

Even though she is on the cusp of turning 80, Lesley Stahl is still climbing mountains.
Thirty years ago, the “60 Minutes” correspondent “huffed and puffed for two months to get myself in training” for what she has said was “one of the best days of my life,” a visit with the famous Rwanda mountain primates that were the basis of the 1988 film “Gorillas in the Mist.” Her stamina work at that time didn’t do much for her, she recalls in an interview. “I almost died climbing to find them.” Despite her work, “what I failed to take into account was the altitude. It just did me in. Luckily, there was a porter or a guide who held my hand and basically made sure I didn’t quit or die.”
Stahl recently attempted the feat again for the CBS newsmagazine and managed to find the gorillas and get down the slopes.

Bradley Cooper quickly racked up eight Oscar nominations over the course of just seven years, but he hasn’t won yet. However, this year he has two chances for acting prizes: Best Actor for Guillermo Del Toro‘s “Nightmare Alley” and Best Supporting Actor for an as yet untitled Paul Thomas Anderson film. Those happen to be our top two Oscar contenders for Best Picture according to our early odds. So could he end up with two nominations? And if so, could he win one or both of them?

“Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” star Sacha Baron Cohen made history at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first actor to win twice for playing the same character in an original film and its sequel.
Cohen took home the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for the “Borat” sequel. He previously won in the same category in 2007 for the first “Borat” film. In addition to Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Cohen also accepted the Golden Globe award for Best Musical or Comedy, which “Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” won earlier in the ceremony.

Long live the queen, but not Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes record. The three-time champ suffered her first loss(es) on Sunday night, losing Best TV Drama Actress to Emma Corrin, her co-star on “The Crown,” and Best Film Supporting Actress to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritanian.”
Colman had entered the night with a perfect 3-for-3 record, having garnered Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Night Manager” in 2017, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown” last year.
Most didn’t expect Colman to maintain her flawless record. She was in second place in the TV drama actress odds, behind Corrin, and in third in the film supporting actress odds, trailing Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), while Foster was in fourth.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be singular in a lot of ways, from its live-virtual hybrid to the fact that virtually all of its movie awards will go to films that premiered on VOD or streaming services. In virtually every category, the movie that wins will be the lowest-grossing movie ever to win in that category. You can thank the Covid-inspired theater closings for that.
Here are some other records that might be broken Sunday night:
• If “Nomadland” or “Promising Young Woman” wins Best Motion Picture – Drama, it would be the first movie directed by a woman to win in the category, and the second to win in either of the best-picture categories.
• If Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”) or Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) wins best director, it’ll be the second time that award has gone to a woman, after Streisand for “Yentl.

Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Wednesday morning by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson, and history could be made when the awards are eventually handed out later this month. Anya Taylor-Joy,Olivia Colman and Sacha Baron Cohen are poised to potentially join an elite group of performers who’ve won two acting awards in the same year.
After Taylor-Joy broke out as the lead in Netflix’s limited series adaptation of “The Queen’s Gambit,” a Best Movie/Limited Series Actress nomination for the young actress seemed like a foregone conclusion. She’s up against Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”), Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”) and Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”).

Eclectic director of documentaries and feature films, from Seven Up! to James Bond
Michael Apted, who has died aged 79, was a director who moved with ease between socially conscious documentaries and feature films with a special focus on female achievement.
In the latter camp was Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), for which Sissy Spacek won the best actress Oscar for playing the country and western singer Loretta Lynn, and Gorillas in the Mist (1988), starring Sigourney Weaver as the murdered conservationist Dian Fossey. He also enjoyed commercial success with the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999) and the Cs Lewis adaptation The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

Michael Apted was 22 when he joined the crew of “Seven Up!,” a British made-for-television documentary that profiled 14 children from different class backgrounds. That made him 15 years senior to his subjects, with whom he maintained contact, establishing an almost familial connection that spanned more than half a century.
Apted did not direct the original 1964 documentary, as is commonly thought, nor was that initial installment such an important landmark in the field of nonfiction filmmaking. The breakthrough came in Apted’s decision to continue the project with an hour-long follow-up TV movie seven years later, “7 Plus Seven” — and again every seven years after that — revisiting as many of the children as would agree to participate as they grew up, found their ways in life, fell in love, married, divorced and so on.
As conceived, the “Up” series had a decidedly sociological bent, focusing on the British class system and to what degree...

When the 2020 Oscar nominations were announced, Scarlett Johansson attracted attention by earning two for acting. With inclusions in both the Best Actress (“Marriage Story”) and Best Supporting Actress (“Jojo Rabbit”) categories, she was the first actor in 12 years who had a chance at winning two acting Academy Awards on the same night. She ultimately lost both bids, but the feat placed her in the rare company of only 11 others who have achieved it since the supporting categories were introduced at the Oscars in 1937.
Here is a screen-time based analysis of all of them, from earliest to most recent. We note the names and screen time of key rival nominees and the winners in each race as well.

He reprised his role as Pius Xiii this year for a second season titled “The New Pope,” with John Malkovich joining the cast in the new title role as John Paul III. The Oscars don’t always get it right, and that’s why they have the Honorary Award. Countless actors and actresses have contributed greatly to the cinematic medium, but not every impact is deemed “Oscar-worthy.” Until the Academy at large begins embracing all genres and performance, the prize is given to reward a career that has had an influence in film.
The honor was created for achievements not covered by existing competitive categories and has been used for a few “course corrections” or significant milestones worth celebrating. In the past, the special award has been bestowed on artists such as Jackie Chan, Steve Martin, Gena Rowlands, Donald Sutherland and most recently David Lynch, Wes Studi and Lina Wertmüller, (“Seven Beauties”), the first female directing nominee.
There’s no limit to the number of awards that can be handed out each year, and giving suggestions can be tricky. Below are my...

Olivia Colman has a perfect record at the Golden Globes, going 3-0, and she can improve on that tally in a huge way in February. The Oscar winner is the favorite in two races, which would make her the fifth performer to snag two Globes in one night.
Colman is comfortably out front in our Best TV Drama Actress odds for “The Crown” at 10/3. As the defending champ, she’d be the first person to go back to back in the category since Claire Danes did it in 2012 and ’13 for “Homeland.” Colman would also join a short list of multiple winners in the category — only three other people have won twice, while Danes has prevailed three times, and Angela Lansbury holds the record with four.

Barça Studios and Sony Music Latin Iberia are teaming to produce “Talent Explorers,” an animated series which marks the third title from Barça Studios, the burgeoning film-tv content arm of F.C. Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs.
The series – which sees Max, a 15 year-old boy, Roc, big bear with a heart of gold, and Lynds, a tech-savvy pink kitten, travel the world, scouting for the next generation of soccer stars, – marks the third title at Barça Studios, after first team player doc series “Matchday,” just released by Netflix in Latin America.

Last month, Scarlett Johansson became just the 12th performer to garner two acting Oscar nominations in one year — Best Actress for “Marriage Story” and Best Supporting Actress for “Jojo Rabbit” — but her double losses on Sunday now make her the fifth double nominee to go home empty-handed.
Johansson, who was defeated in lead by Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) and in supporting by her “Marriage Story” lawyer Laura Dern, joins Sigourney Weaver (1988’s “Gorillas in the Mist” and “Working Girl”), Emma Thompson (1993’s “The Remains of the Day” and “In the Name of the Father”), Julianne Moore (2002’s “Far From Heaven” and “The Hours”) and Cate Blanchett (2007’s “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and “I’m Not There”) as double losers.

Scarlett Johansson is a double Oscar nominee for her performances in “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and chances are she’s not going to win both, especially since none of the previous 11 double nominees have done so. But you would love it if Oscar voters said “I do” to her in Best Actress for “Marriage Story.”
In a recent poll, 39 percent of our readers would like Johansson to take home the gold for the Noah Baumbach divorce drama. Scarlett Johansson shed her “never Oscar-nominated” tag in tremendous fashion, becoming the 12th actor to garner double bids after landing in Best Actress for “Marriage Story” and Best Supporting Actress in “Jojo Rabbit.” And if you had your druthers, which performance would you award her for?
Ok, let’s get this out of the way first: No, she is not favored to win either category. Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) and Johansson’s “Marriage Story” lawyer Laura Dern have been steamrolling through the season in the lead and supporting races, respectively, and it doesn’t feel like there will be an upset in the offing in such a short season. Johansson is currently in second place in our odds in both categories.
But ScarJo stans can still dream. None of the previous 11 double nominees have won both categories, so that’s the least likely scenario. Seven of them took home one, the...
