Have you ever dreamed about being a better version of yourself? With her second film, Coralie Fargeat not only addresses this question but takes aim at ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry with a riotous, dreamlike horror-thriller that ends in a delirious symphony of blood, guts and otherwise undefinable viscera. Imagine David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive fused in a telepod with David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, add the unbelievably dynamic pairing of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, process it through the ultra-vivid color palette that is Fargeat’s hyper-saturated imagination, sprinkle a bit of J.G. Ballard on top, and you have the perfect breakout genre movie of the year.
If you had “Demi Moore to make a hagsploitation body horror splatter movie” on your 2024 bingo card, you stand to make a fortune, but, come on, it’s not very likely; there’s been nothing in her filmography so far...

Not only was it a faithful adaptation of the Playstation video game series, but it also won over casual viewers as a must-see event. Now, everyone is eagerly anticipating the return of the series for Season 2.

“The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” “Bluey,” “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” are among this year’s additional nominees as the Peabody Awards’ board of jurors revealed 27 nods for its arts, children’s/youth, entertainment, and interactive & immersive categories. The Peabody Board of Jurors released the rest of the 2024 Peabody Awards nominees today and the results were somewhat surprising. Comprising the Arts, Children’s/Youth, Entertainment, Interactive, and Immersive categories, the list of honorees included anticipated programs such as “The Last of Us,” “The Bear” and “Bluey.” What was something of a shock was a snub of the critically acclaimed and awards favorite, “Beef.”

On the Children/Youth front, “Bluey” was joined by fellow Disney+ series “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” and “Summer Camp Island.

‘AHS: Delicate’ concludes with one of ‘American Horror Story’s’ most disappointing finales that makes up its own rules, hammers in rote themes, and then turns to dust.
“When are they going to let us tell our own stories?”
A pregnancy brings genetic material together until it culminates into a person and American Horror Story: Delicate also tells a story where its success is dependent upon the season’s ability to tie all of its ideas together into a satisfying finale. Pregnancy stories are all about the ending and one’s enjoyment of “The Auteur” really comes down to what you want out of an American Horror Story finale. Anyone who’s watched the series has been burnt by past finales that are underbaked or overwrought. There are also only so many places that a season finale that begins with Anna in labor can go. Spoilers for "Moon" follow.
Most post-apocalyptic science fiction tales focus on ravaged planets, the despair and hope in re-building human colonies, or the advent of new horrors in an already bleak universe. Duncan Jones' directorial debut, "Moon," zooms in on one man — rather, the various versions of a man long dead — while capturing the acute sense of isolation he feels during a three-year-long solitary stint on the far side of the moon. This man, Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), is on the verge of breaking free from this lonely, monotonous routine, which is when a rover accident completely destabilizes his concept of self, including the emotion-fueled memories he thought were exclusively his.
When a newly activated Sam clone ventures outside and brings the unconscious Sam inside the facility, the two are immediately mired in conflict about who the "real" Sam is. After all, both men have the same memories about their wife,...

With just ten days to go until the Cannes Film Festival lineup is unveiled, one title heavily tipped to premiere is David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt. While U.S. distribution has yet to be confirmed, French distributor Pyramide Films has now unveiled a September 25, 2024 release date alongside news that it will be the director’s longest film yet.
Clocking in at 119 minutes, it’s just a hair longer than Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch, which both ran 115 minutes. The distributor also confirms returning collaborators cinematographer Douglas Koch and editor Christopher Donaldson, who shot and edited Crimes of the Future, respectively, and the Canadian director’s longtime composer Howard Shore.
Here’s a new synopsis as well: “Karsh, 50, is a renowned businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents a revolutionary and controversial system, GraveTech, which allows the living...

Making a place for himself among critically acclaimed directors like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve has turned himself into an extraordinary icon following his take on Dune. While previously the novels were considered “unadaptable” following David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed attempts, Villeneuve proved his capabilities with his sequels.

Apart from Dune, Denis Villeneuve also has other acclaimed projects like Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and more under his belt. But much like most filmmakers, even Villeneuve’s proficiency comes from his appreciation for cinematic brilliance. Naming a few of his favorite films of all time during an interview with BBC Radio 1, the filmmaker held one movie in high regard that he even paid homage to in Dune.

Rachel Weisz will portray not one but two corrupt doctors in a new interpretation of a 1980s medical thriller, "Dead Ringers." Weisz will star as identical twin physicians in an adaptation of David Cronenberg's movie of the same name, and on Feb. 28, Prime Video released the first teaser, which makes it clear the series promises to be as bloody and disturbing as the original.
The first "Dead Ringers," which came out in 1988, starred Jeremy Irons as identical twin gynecologists who often seduce their patients. When one of the brothers falls in love with a patient, though, it leads to a rift between the twins that ultimately has deadly consequences. The story was loosely inspired by the true story of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, two identical twin gynecologists who lost their licenses and were later found dead of barbiturate overdoses in one of their Manhattan apartments.

"So what do you think would happen?" Paramount has revealed a first look teaser for a streaming version of Fatal Attraction, out to watch at the end of April. Described as a "fresh take" on the 1987 erotic thriller film of the same name that starred Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. “In the film, Alex is the villain of the story, and Dan is the hero and there is no gray area,” Caplan states. "Now, audiences have changed so much, we are no longer primed to believe in this villainous woman story. She's clearly mentally ill and that's not something that is really touched upon at all in the movie." This new version is a "deep-dive" reimagining of the classic 80's thriller, exploring the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes toward strong women, personality disorders and coercive control. Kevin Hart is back with a thirst for fame in the official trailer for “Die Hart 2: Die Harter,” which the Roku Channel dropped today.

Although we recently got our first look at the upcoming David Cronenberg remake "Dead Ringers," we hadn't actually gotten to see any of the bizarre action to come on Prime Video. Luckily, that has now changed, because the streamer has released its first, albeit very brief look at the limited series. Don't expect to spot any major plot details with this 40-second teaser, but you will spot two very different Rachel Weiszs in bloody lab coats. You may think you know why if you saw the 1988 David Cronenberg original starring Jeremy Irons, but will that be the case with this new take? Who knows! Regardless, this teaser has us sold.
What we do know is that Prime Video's take on "Dead Ringers" looks appropriately moody and downright creepy. Come on, if you are adapting a Cronenberg work, you need to embrace the weirdness that is so synonymous with his stories.

I’m not sure if the world is ready for double the Rachel Weisz. Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for Dead Ringers, a new psychological thriller series that puts a modern spin on David Cronenberg’s original movie.
Rachel Weisz plays the dual roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, “twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront.” The Dead Ringers teaser trailer doesn’t give us much beyond thirty seconds of Rachel Weisz times two, but really, that’s all I need.

The original film's synopsis is pretty much the same: twin gynecologists (originally played by Jeremy Irons) take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman. This time, Rachel Weisz stars in both lead roles, as Elliot and Beverly Mantle. The series cast also includes Michael Chernus as Tom, Poppy Liu as Greta, plus Britne Oldford, Jeremy Shamos, Jennifer Ehle, and Emily Meade. There's...

David Cronenberg's work can never truly be replicated, but that doesn't mean it can't be modernized. One of his movies best primed for re-interpretation is "Dead Ringers," his 1988 psychological thriller starring Jeremy Irons in dual gynecologist roles. The film has frequently been considered one of the best Canadian films of all time, landing on the Toronto International Film Festival's decennial curated Top 10 list. While certainly a great movie, it can be argued that some of its themes may be better explored with a few changes.
Thankfully, "Dead Ringers" is about to get a new lease on life thanks to Prime Video. The streamer has released new details about its series adaptation of the film, directed by such big names as Karyn Kusama and Sean Durkin. While this adaptation has been in the works for a few years, it's actually coming to our screens closer than you may realize. Here's...

What could possibly be better than Rachel Weisz? How about Rachel Weizes? (Or Rachels Weisz?) Either way you look at it, a double dose of the actor is a good thing, and she's twinned up for the new TV adaptation of David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller Dead Ringers, with new images online.
Yes, not a TV version of the Radio 4 series with political and pop cultural impressions, this instead finds Weisz as Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes… including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront. Will that lead to danger and dodgy dealings? We'd be shocked if it didn't!
This new limited series is created, written, and executive produced by Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch, a veteran of shows such as Succession and Normal People.

Less than a year after David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” made a splash at Cannes, one of the body-horror master’s most famous films is getting the streaming TV treatment. “Dead Ringers,” a six-episode remake of the Canadian filmmaker’s 1988 feature, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 21, it was announced Tuesday. (TVLine first shared the news.)
Rachel Weisz stars in the series as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, two identical twin sisters who both work as gynecologists and operate a successful Obgyn clinic. David Cronenberg‘s 1988 film Dead Ringers (get it Here) was seared into Oscar winner (for her role in The Constant Gardener) Rachel Weisz’s memory from the moment she first saw the film, as she found it to be “deeply psychological, deeply twisted, perverse and thrilling”. So when Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures asked Weisz if there were any projects she was keen to make, Weisz brought up the idea of a TV series version of Dead Ringers where she would play the twin lead characters. The project started moving forward in that moment, and Alice Birch – whose credits include Lady Macbeth, The Wonder, Normal People, and Conversations With Friends – was soon brought on board to write (along with an all-women writing team), serve as showrunner, and executive produce the series with Weisz and Ellison. We’ll get to see the result of their collaboration when this six-episode version of...

In 1981, David Cronenberg directed the science fiction film "Scanners." It starred Stepehn Lack as a down-on-his-luck homeless man who possesses eerie mind-bullet powers. People with such powers are called Scanners. He is recruited into a secret government project and introduced to other Scanners, but also finds himself targeted by a rival group of rogue Scanners, of which Michael Ironside is a member. Early in "Scanners," Ironside's character uses his powers to explode the head of a journalist. It's perhaps the single best exploding head scene in cinema history. At the film's climax, Ironside and Lack will try to Scan one another to death. A few eyeballs will burst.
Ironside, now 72, is a Canadian actor and all-around kind fellow with hundreds of credits to his name. His deep voice and stern demeanor found him playing heavies and villains a lot, and chances are quite good that you, the reader, have seen...

"Dead Ringers" is an undersung gem in David Cronenberg's body of work. It's fairly restrained in onscreen gore (by the director's usual standards anyway) but that's because it's a work of emotional body horror, about a single soul split between two bodies.
Jeremy Irons plays twins Beverly and Elliot Mantle, who both work as gynecologists in Toronto. The two share everything in life — even their romantic relationships, with the more confident Elliot handing off women to his shy younger brother. They become disentangled once Beverly falls for their patient, actress Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold), who in turn gets him hooked on drugs. Can the twins survive as individuals?
Irons' work is the most impressive "single actor playing twins" performance I've ever seen, especially since so many of his scenes are with, well, himself. As alike as his characters seem, Irons maintains an individual presence whenever he slips from one...

In the festival of military might that is Tony Scott's 1986 action movie, "Top Gun," the fighter pilots are surely the stars. At California's Miramar Naval Air Station — the "Top Gun" of the title — the audience watches Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) and other candidates go through rigorous flight training, shepherded by experienced instructors like Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf (Tom Skerritt) and Lt. Commander Rick "Jester" Heatherly. Maverick may have gotten a sequel, but it's the Top Gun instructors who train and manage (as best they can) his need for speed.
Jester is played by Michael Ironside, who in 1986 was at the mid-point between playing baddies in David Cronenberg's head trip "Scanners" and Paul Verhoeven's cerebral sci-fi gem "Total Recall" — two movies that bookended a decade where the Canadian actor-writer ascended as one of the most recognizable tough guys on film.

Welcome back, dear readers! It’s a new year, and it’s time for more new (to me) horror flicks. We’re kicking 2023 off with a flick from Ti West, a dude who had a hell of a 2022 with not one but two hit films in X and Pearl. But today we’re going to be taking a trip back into his earlier filmography, and our companion will be the great Emily von Seele. In addition to being a Senior Contributor right here at Daily Dead, you probably also know Emily as a regular co-host on the Dead Ringers podcast (I’m in the process of collecting all the Dead Ringers hosts as I’ve previously chatted with Nolan McBride and Philip Yount). Emily’s knowledge about horror films knows no bounds, and she brings an infectious enthusiasm to her discussion about the genre.

Following in the slipstream of Shudder’s surprise hit Skinamarink, Laura Moss’ birth/rebirth is a similarly non-conforming horror, this time one that prioritizes its intriguing but somewhat underdeveloped conceit above the traditional trappings of its genre. Very loosely inspired by Mary Shelley’s 19th century novel Frankenstein, the film centers on a decidedly post-modern Prometheus: by making its central scientist female rather than male, Moss’ feature debut short-circuits the usual blunt clichés of a crazy scientist bent on defying nature and instead enters the realm of David Cronenberg’s ’80s heyday with its focus on the human anatomy as a battleground for shady ethics.
Of all Cronenberg’s body horrors, however, the touchstone here seems to be 1988’s Dead Ringers, one of the director’s most sophisticated and least gory, dealing with notions of duality in the story of doomed identical twin gynecologists. Moss touches on similar ideas of yin and yang here,...

To say that the Cronenberg name is a major one in the horror genre would be an understatement. Not only is David Cronenberg one of the most acclaimed directors of both disgusting horror and erotic discomfort, but his son Brandon is pretty damn talented in his own right. In my personal ranking of nepo-babies, he's up toward the top due to his striking and distinctly disturbing filmography.
However, if you watch something like "Possessor" with only the baseline knowledge of his father's work, it may seem like Brandon's trying to ape his style. In an interview with The New York Times, the younger Cronenberg said that these comparisons aren't surprising to him – how could they not? That being said, he's not letting them get to him, having already experienced such comparisons in the art industry.
"The truth is, I'm making movies that are interesting to me and honest to my own creative impulses,...

In 2022, slasher movies reigned supreme. From the nostalgia-ripping "Scream" sequel to Ti West's bloody "X" trilogy, fans of the genre were treated to a bit of everything. This is especially true with the slasher-comedy "Bodies Bodies Bodies," which saw a new, unlikely horror star emerge. Amandla Stenberg, previously known for their work in YA novel adaptations, has solidified themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the genre. They may have their own "Star Wars" show in the works, but Stenberg is not leaving horror fans behind any time soon, either.
"My Animal" is set to be the next foray into horror for Stenberg, but they will be trading the comedic undertones of "Bodies" for a straight-up monster flick this time around. Although Stenberg will be joined by a familiar face or two on this latest endeavor, "My Animal" features an up-and-coming cast and crew looking to their...

Former Disney animation execs Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein have joined Megan Ellison’s Annapurna to establish and co-lead an Animation division at the independent studio.
The first film set for release via Annapurna’s new division is Nimona, directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane and produced by Julie Zackary and Karen Ryan. The film set for release on Netflix next year follows Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is the only person that can help Knight Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) to prove his innocence, when he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit.
Baird and Millstein previously headed Fox/Disney’s Blue Sky Studios, where they led over 500 filmmakers and were responsible for the development and production of Blue Sky’s feature animation slate. Millstein also previously served as President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, with the company during his tenure releasing such blockbuster hits as Big Hero 6,...
