- He was an icon, flamboyant pianist, egomaniac, showman par excellence: Liberace - the King of Bling, led his life in the fast lanes between Hollywood, Las Vegas and Palm Springs. In the middle of the Californian desert, where Hollywood stars celebrated wild parties around private pools, he lived a paradoxical life of spectacle and secrecy, illusion and reality. His success is closely linked to the growing popularity of television and the American TV era. Scores of American housewives adored the musician who could play everything from jazz to classic. His public life was as paradoxical as his performances were glamorous. No other artist cultivated such an openly camp persona on America's biggest stages while at the same time vehemently refusing to come out as gay, a facade Liberace kept up until his death. He was one of the first celebrities to die of complications from the AIDS virus, although his death was officially attributed to "heart failure" in order to preserve the memory of the one-man Disneyland. We examine his stellar career and its abrupt end in the context of America's social and media history. Liberace's story reflects the American dream - but also the country's bigotry and the divisions of a rapidly growing society.

Since his homecoming, something about Pete has changed, and if the local legends are true, he may never be the same.

- Their network is woven like a spider's web over an immense empire: the Roman roads. Nearly 85 000 kilometers of paved roads once traversed the Roman Empire, linking Europe to Asia Minor and the Near East. For several centuries, they served as commercial roads, military routes and communication networks - for the circulation of the traders, soldiers, civil servants and messengers of the Empire. After the fall of the Empire, the paths outlived their builders, but their usage changed. For centuries, cities and villages, civilizations and cultures thus continued to develop along these routes. Today, this immense network of roads continues to traverse all of Europe. It bears witness to the wealth of ancient crafts and the diversity of traditions. Despite the domination of the Roman Empire 2 000 years ago, European countries have conserved all of their singularity. Where do we find traces of this "golden age" today? How were Roman foundations of culture and tradition reworked and developed through to the 21st century and in which regions did this occur? We set out to look for these influences on the ancient Roman roads of Europe, in villages and big cities, through encounters with artisans and the discovery of unusual social rites - by looking beyond intangible studies and dusty archaeological sites.

- It has become a debated symbol of the city, right in the heart of Berlin: I.M. Pei's modern addition to the Royal Arsenal building, the "Königliche Zeughaus", houses the "Deutsche Historische Museum/German Historical Museum". This is an example of a Chinese-American architect building on "Prussian" history. This film is made up of fascinating and impressive images telling the story of a building that was once the royal arsenal, then the Prussian hall of honor, the East German Museum of national history and now the German Historical Museum. Two buildings represent two different epochs, two contrasting stories that are presented in a thrilling manner.... Diagonally opposite the Berlin City Palace on the "Unter den Linden" boulevard, a pompous baroque building was erected at great expense in 1695: the Armoury. It was used exclusively as the imperial weapons arsenal and was designed to make sure everybody noticed how big it was. In spite of all its ornamentation the building appeared too modern to many critics of the day, who claimed that it did not fit in to the cityscape. This film by Jeremy J.P. Fekete in the ARTE series "Building on the Past" illustrates the phenomenon by with the successful symbiosis of the armory and the Pei building.
