Though the SAG-AFTRA strike is still in effect, late night will return starting on Friday with a new episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It’s a timeline that puts late night in an odd position: Which guests can appear on late night when the actors’ strike is still in progress?
Luckily, we have an answer to that question thanks to daytime television and SAG-AFTRA’s own rules.
Why can late night return during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
The state of late night is a little bit confusing, because several hosts have also done acting work and are part of SAG-AFTRA. For example, Jimmy Fallon starred in “Fever Pitch” and John Oliver starred in “Community,” as well as the live-action “Lion King.”
Because late-night shows fall under the Network Television Code, these striking performers can return to their jobs. Late night is officially part of what’s called...

Angela Bassett goes into the Oscars as a supporting actress nominee for her work in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The first and last time she was nominated was 29 years ago for “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
On Wednesday night, she recalled her early days in Hollywood. “When I came into this business, the path was not clear,” Bassett said while being honored at Time magazine’s Women of the Year gala at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. “I grew up at a time when it was a special occasion when people who looked like me were featured on the television screen or movie screen or in the theaters. Milck (née Connie Lim) doesn't like to be called an activist; instead, she prefers the term "social change artist" because she likes to "create art to help fuel" the actions of activists. In honor of W.K. Kellogg Foundation's National Day of Racial Healing (Jan. 19), I chatted with the 34-year-old musician about what the day means to her and how she's bringing about healing in both her music and personal life.
Like many of us, the pandemic has forced Milck to recalibrate and be open to surrendering to things she can't control. "It's been an up-and-down roller coaster as a lot of people are dealing with mental health highs and lows," she told me. "I've really been turning into my creativity. I'm showing up every day to the studio, and I don't know what is going to happen. Sometimes I write a pretty cool song.

“Dancing with the Stars” is celebrating Halloween a little differently this year, holding a Villains Night in lieu of a generic spooky season one on Monday. That means the top 10 couples will be channeling some iconic pop culture baddies while dancing to some songs that are wee bit on the nose, but what do you expect from the show that gave Carole Baskin three feline songs in a row?
The costumes include Nurse Ratched (unclear if this is Louis Fletcher‘s Nurse Ratched or Sarah Paulson‘s), Cruella de Vil (hopefully the costume department will take a page out of Glenn Close‘s homemade one) and Hannibal Lecter (bonus points if they do Mads Mikkelsen‘s instead of Anthony Hopkins‘). Jeannie Mai has the cannibalistic serial killer and she’s dancing to — wait for it — “Maneater.” Meanwhile, Nelly‘s got “Can’t Feel My Face” for his Freddy Krueger get-up.
