Law & Order Svu premiered on September 20, 1999.
Since then, we have all gotten to know and love the New York Detectives who work the Special Victims Unit cases.
Those detectives have changed several times as actors have come and gone from the show. Here are the Law & Order: Svu cast members and characters we'll follow during season 26.
Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay)
More than 550 episodes of Law & Order: Svu have been produced leading up to Season 26.
Olivia Benson has appeared in all of them.
Olivia Benson's Most Memorable Moments From 25 Years of Svu
She has been there from the beginning; we have seen her grow and evolve beautifully.
As the years passed, she went from being a detective to the head of the entire department.
The show wouldn't be the same without her.
At this point, Mariska Hargitay is so associated with Captain Benson that it's hard to think of her as any other character.

Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be back for the 2024-25 season after NBC renewed the pair of shows but spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime is in a slightly more precarious position.
The network has renewed Law & Order for Season 24, while Law & Order: Svu will be back for Season 26.
The future of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is in its fourth season, is still in discussion at the network. It has been the lowest rated of Dick Wolf’s NBC shows and has had a number of showrunners over its course. Matt Olmstead started out as showrunner, replaced by Ilene Chaiken, who was replaced by Barry O’Brien. Bryan Goluboff was named showrunner for Season 3 but left after three months, replaced by Sean Jablonski, who also left shortly after due to “creative differences” and was replaced by David Graziano. John Shiban is showrunner for Season 4.

Benson tries to reconnect with a victim she saved. When Law & Order: Svu returns for Season 25, it will be without a familiar face.
According to TV Line, Molly Burnett is bowing out as Det. Grace Muncy as a series regular.
Burnett's exit played out during the conclusion of Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 3, which served as a crossover with Svu.
Muncy revealed to Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) that Chief Tommy McGrath (Terry Serpico) had rewarded her dedication to the Elias Olsen case by giving her a spot on a DEA task force.
As a result, Burnett is no longer a series regular, but that doesn't mean she won't pop back up down the line.
If the Law & Order universe has taught us anything, former stars are never truly gone and pop back up when there's a story to tell.

The Svu team is down a member: Molly Burnett, the actor behind Det. Grace Muncy, is leaving NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit after one season. During the third-season finale of Law & Order: Organized Crime on Thursday, May 18 — a crossover with Svu’s Season 24 finale that same night — Muncy told colleague Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) that Chief Tommy McGrath (Terry Serpico) had rewarded her dedication to the Elias Olsen case by giving her a spot on a DEA task force. Following the series finale, TVLine confirmed that Burnett is no longer an Svu series regular. A very familiar (and dearly missed!) face is coming in to help out as two Law & Order shows, Svu and Organized Crime, wrap their current seasons. Kelli Giddish, who exited in the winter finale of Svu, is back as Amanda Rollins (who’s now pregnant!), who left the NYPD to go teach at Fordham, is returning. So, of course, TV Insider had to ask Octavio Pisano what he could tease while discussing Detective Joe Velasco dealing with his past in the latest episode. “I can’t say much. I can only say that Velasco is very happy to see her and very excited,” he shared. “That was his big sister when he came in and she took him under his wing. She taught him a lot of things when it came to dealing with victims and the process of a Special Victims Unit.” With Giddish appearing on both Organized Crime...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order: Svu Season 24 Episode 19, “Bend the Law.”] When Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) was younger, he and a friend were involved in a double homicide; the now-detective had been unable to pull the trigger, but his friend could and covered for him with the cartel. Now, on Law & Order: Svu, Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) orders Velasco to bring Chilly (Joseph Castillo-Midyett) to justice. Though Churlish (Jasmine Batchelor) goes with him, Velasco speaks with his old friend alone, and Chilly says he’s leaving what happened in the past … but that wasn’t the last time he killed someone. It’s a recording of that — it’s illegal to do so in Maine — that Velasco gives to Benson upon returning from his trip. He feels like he did the right thing but still feels pretty bad. Eventually, unburdening himself will feel good, the captain tells him. She’ll decide who to ...

Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) must face his past in the April 27 episode of Law & Order: Svu — and he can’t say no because it’s on Captain Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) orders. Previously, Velasco was forced to reveal that, when he was younger, he and a friend, Chilly, were sent to a school for hitmen; the only way to leave was in a body bag. However, when it came time for the “final test,” Velasco couldn’t pull the trigger. Chilly could and covered for him with the cartel. Velasco then ran. Once Benson found out, she told him that he owed a debt to those two people who were killed, and for them to be Ok, he had to bring his friend to justice. Now, in “Bend the Law,” that time has come. “He’s a little conflicted, obviously, and he might think that he can...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes discussion of major plot points from the Dec. 8 “Law & Order: Svu” episode on NBC.
Kelli Giddish has officially left “Law & Order: Svu.” During Thursday night’s winter finale, Giddish’s Detective Rollins decided to leave her job with the unit for a teaching gig at Fordham.
The episode kicked off with Rollins marrying Peter Scanavino’s Carisi in a courthouse wedding. After the wedding, Rollins drives to see Det. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and the pair get drunk in a motel room together. After many glasses of boxed wine, she tells her boss about the job offer.
“You taught me how to be a good detective,” Rollins says. “You taught me how to love myself and how to let people in — the victims and Carisi.”
At first, Benson gets upset and Rollins leaves. They later talk at work and Benson apologizes for reacting so harshly.

Directed by Christian Schultz from a screenplay co-written with Peter Ambrosio, Presence relocates the haunted house setting to a luxury yacht. The extreme isolation of being at sea provides fertile ground to explore what makes a haunting; is it a product of a fractured mind or something supernatural? Presence attempts to straddle the line between psychological and supernatural, but its vague approach to storytelling casts its horror adrift.
Jennifer (The Kominsky Method’s Jenna Lyng Adams) struggles to piece her life back together once leaving New York after a mental break. She’s plagued by horrific dreams in which she kills Keaton (Octavio Pisano), prone to panic attacks, and suffers further anxiety from being unable to reach her friend and business partner Sam (Alexandria DeBerry) for months. Then Sam reappears out of the blue with a lucrative business proposition from billionaire David (Dave Davis) that has the pair set off...

"One bad dream can't ruin everything." Or maybe it can?? XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Presence, marking the narrative feature debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Christian Schultz. This initially premiered at Panic Fest and will be out on VOD in November next month. Two young business partners are invited to a week-long private yachting voyage with a potential investor. At night, Jennifer's dreams begin to bleed into reality as the others realize that Jennifer may have unknowingly brought something sinister on-board. What dark secrets is she hiding from them? This stars Jenna Lyng Adams, Dave Davis, Alexandria DeBerry, Major Dodge, & Octavio Pisano. Unsurprisingly the film looks entirely unoriginal, with plenty of cliche tropes, topped off with a rich guy and a big yacht. Watch out. ›››

Kelli Giddish will be exiting “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” during Season 24, TheWrap has confirmed. The actress, who has portrayed Detective Amanda Rollins on the NBC procedural since 2011, will be in the premiere episode of the upcoming season.
“I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on ‘Law & Order: Svu.’ Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life,” the actress said in a statement.

In a statement from Giddish provided by NBC, she wrote: “I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on ‘Law & Order: Svu.’ Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m...

There's a new dedicated detective in town. Well, relatively new, that is. Octavio Pisano joined the cast of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit as a series regular back in September as Joe Velasco, a detective hailing from a border town in Mexico and finding his way to Svu after a stint undercover. But, with summer around the corner and a season now under his belt, Pisano calls his final day on set "bittersweet." His co-star Ice-t likened it to the last day of school, Pisano shared in an exclusive interview with E! News. "The last few episodes, after the 22 episode season, you're just looking forward to that break and you just want to relax," he said. "And that...

Octavio Pisano’s character Detective Joe Velasco crosses over to “Law & Order: Organized Crime” on Thursday’s episode, “The Lost One,” where he teams up with Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) and tech whiz Jet Slootmaeker (Ainsley Seiger) to find a kidnapped girl.
While Velasco, who only joined the Svu squad this season, took a while to earn the approval of veteran cop Fin Tutuola (Ice-t), when Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) recommends him for the assignment, Stabler is impressed with his work.
“They actually get along great,” Pisano told TheWrap of Stabler and Velasco’s working relationship. “They both have backgrounds in organized crime. He’s been in that world before, so I think Stabler saw that and appreciated it.”
As for working with Seiger, who is also fairly new to the “Law & Order” universe, Pisano said, “She’s fantastic. I haven’t seen much of her work until I...

Law & Order: Svu showrunner and executive producer Warren Leigh’s announcement that he is stepping down from the NBC crime drama came as a surprise to the cast and crew. “I saw him yesterday on set, but it was a surprise to us all,” series regular Octavio Pisano told The Wrap. “I expressed my gratitude to him yesterday, and I wish I would have known [he was leaving]. I would have gone a little bit deeper.” Leight revealed he was exiting the series in a Twitter thread May 3, where he outlined how tough it has been filming the series during a pandemic. “As some of you have already figured out, I am stepping down at the end of #SVU23,” he wrote. “The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break.” “Obviously, I’m sad to see him go, but...
