Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) announced today that since its inception in 2008, the nonprofit has over $795 million pledged to fund critically needed cancer research.

Henrik Ibsen’s world-(in)famous play “A Doll’s House” has not been seen on Broadway in over 25 years, when Janet McTeer led a production under the direction of Anthony Page. Now, into the shoes of legendary character Nora Helmer steps Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, starring in a work adapted by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Amy Herzog and directed by Tony Award nominee Jamie Lloyd. “A Doll’s House” opened March 9 at the Hudson Theatre and will play through June 10, just one day before the Tonys.
Joining Chastain in Ibsen’s form-defining domestic drama about the oppressive gender politics of the so-called private sphere in nineteenth-century Norway are Emmy nominee Arian Moayed as her husband Torvald, Okieriete Onaodowan as the opportunistic Nils Krogstad, Michael Patrick Thornton as the sympathetic Dr. Rank, Jesmille Darbouze as Nora’s old friend Kristine Linde, and Tasha Lawrence as the Helmers’ nanny.

‘A Doll’s House’ Theater Review: Jessica Chastain Blazes in Intensely Intimate Take on Ibsen Classic
Jessica Chastain is already seated onstage, in character as Nora Helmer, when the audience starts filing in for A Doll’s House. Looking every inch the gorgeous, troubled trophy wife in a period-nonspecific black dress, her expression a mask of numb absence, she circuits the stage over and over on a slow turntable. She will rarely leave that chair over the course of this transfixing slow-boil take on the landmark Ibsen drama, which builds a bridge between its original 1879 setting and the present day in Amy Herzog’s laser-focused new modern adaptation.
Mounted with daring austerity even by the usual pared-down standards of director Jamie Lloyd, the production finds scorching intensity in stillness. Simple wooden chairs — plus the wheelchair used by actor Michael Patrick Thornton, who plays sickly cynic Dr. Rank with delicious bone-dry affectlessness and simmering sexual tension — are the only scenic or prop elements in the stark playing space.

A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Succession‘s Arian Moayed has extended its Broadway run by a week, and will now play through Saturday, June 10.
The extension announced by producer The Jamie Lloyd Company comes just a day before the revival’s March 9 opening at the Hudson Theatre. The new version of Ibsen’s classic is adapted by Amy Herzog and directed by Lloyd.
The Lloyd company said the week-long extension of the limited engagement was due to popular demand. Last week, A Doll’s House grossed $742,696 and filled a strong 93% of seats at the Hudson.
Chastain and Moayed are joined onstage by a cast that includes Jesmille Darbouze, Tasha Lawrence, Michael Patrick Thornton and Okieriete Onaodowan.

We’re now about halfway through the 2022-23 Broadway season, and there are currently nine productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below is a plot overview of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, and creative teams, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Pictures From Home” (opens February 9; closes April 30)
This stage adaptation of Larry Sultan’s 1992 photo memoir is a comic and dramatic portrait of a mother and father, and the son who photographed their lives. As Larry tries to capture his parents, their reality explodes from the frame in an exploration of the power of art and how much it reveals.
Adapted for the stage by WGA nominee Sharr White, the production stars Tony winner Danny Burstein, three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane, and four-time Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker.

With Jessica Chastain’s Golden Globes mask, the actress proved face-wear remains fashionable. But the Oscar winner said it was about more than just nailing her awards show look.
While speaking to E! News during their red-carpet pre-show Tuesday night, the George & Tammy star addressed her sparkling face mask, which matched her dress and was designed by Oscar de la Renta. Of her decision to wear the face covering, the actress expressed a little fear over attending the ceremony amid the ongoing spread of Covid-19 variants.
But she also revealed, while mentioning her upcoming lead performance in an update of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House for Broadway, that the mask was about more than alleviating personal concerns. “I’m a little nervous about getting sick. But, I got my mask,” she said. “You have to be so careful in the theater because I don’t want to let my cast down.

"Isn't it great to be back in the theatre?" When Sam Gold's "Macbeth" opens, an actor begins a pre-speech. The sentiment is inviting thanks to the amiable charisma of its messenger, Michael Patrick Thornton (who also plays Lennox). I feel his words, but its placement is bait-y, an "it's nice to have theatre" ubiquitous platitude while pandemic protections on Broadway are fraying (the show itself was among many recently delayed by Covid-infections to the point of Gold temporarily assuming Thornton's role). "Lap it up, pandemic," Thornton ridicules, smirking, our applause signifying that we have taken the bait. He also...

A very busy Broadway season comes to a close with its final production, and Sam Gold’s staging of Macbeth starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga is nothing if not a dynamic attempt to cap an unusual and often extraordinary theater season. Uneven – if not so much as Gold’s 2019 King Lear with Glenda Jackson – and peppered with choices both curious and captivating (a brief prologue that’s as funny as it is timely), this iteration of The Scottish Play, which opened last night at the Longacre Theatre, nearly holds up to the unavoidable hype of its starry cast.
Craig, 007-strong if forcefully one-note in the title role, and Negga – whose transformation from murderously ambitious soldier’s wife to haunted, spot-damning wreck is one of the production’s delights – lead a large cast that includes stand-outs Amber Gray (in the gender-switched role of...

At the Media Access Awards on Wednesday, honoree Marlee Matlin summed up the mood by saying that when she came to Los Angeles in 1985, “words like equality and access were so far outside the mainstream of Hollywood, I had to make noise.” Receiving the Maa’s lifetime achievement award “pushes me to be even louder.”
The annual awards have long honored film and TV shows that offer positive portrayals of disabled people. Other honorees, which were announced in advance, included Selma Blair, Troy Kotsur, John Krasinski, Jamie Nieto, Ryan O’Connell, “Luca” producer Andrea Warren and Zeno Mountain Farm.

For all that broadcast TV’s power has attenuated in recent years, what they choose to put on still means something — and, from a certain point of view, something more than the choices made by prestige outlets. After all, the reach of broadcasters is without parallel. They’re simply in that many more homes than prestige cablers and streamers, even as their peak audience (or even their audience five years ago) seems unattainable now.
Which makes it important and worth noting when a network makes a choice more ambitious than the mix of family comedies and procedurals that still performs well enough. Not every element of CBS’s new drama “The Red Line,” about the aftermath of a police shooting in Chicago, works perfectly, but the show is trying to do something unusual in today’s landscape — use the big, broad emotional strokes of broadcast at its best to usher...

Magnum P.I. is officially returning to CBS. The network has picked up the reboot of the classic 1980s show, one of four drama pilots to get series orders by the network today, along with God Friended Me and the Noah Wyle starrer The Red Line. They join Dick Wolf’s F.B.I. and The Code.

Chicago – The actualities that define adolescence are always prime for new territory in drama, and that is what the Chicago-based film “The View from Tall” accomplishes. Co-directed by Erica Weiss and Caitlin Parrish, it will be screened at the Midwest Independent Film Festival on Tuesday, April 4th, 2017 (details below).
The story centers on Justine (Amanda Drinkall), a highly intelligent high school senior who feels like an outsider in her insular adolescent community. Her rebellion was a consensual relationship with a teacher, and the subsequent problems when the situation is exposed has the teacher exiled, and places Justine in therapy. Her facilitator is Douglas (Michael Patrick Thornton), a wheelchair bound therapist who frees her thoughts and reactions. Their intimacy evokes feelings that neither one of them expect, which raises the suspicions of Justine’s sister Paula (Carolyn Braver).

Los Angeles Film Festival hosted so many films directed by women, packing them all into one article would just be excessive. I already talked about Maria Goven’s tepid Play the Devil, but these next four films were real standouts. While too many independent films are plagued by a need to fit in, to conform, to act as a demo reel for some up-and-coming filmmakers just dying to get hired for a studio gig, these four purposefully and forcefully resist the marketplace, acting as pure vessels for the artists behind them. They find varying degrees of inspiration, but each is more than noteworthy.

Chicago – The Chicago independent film scene keeps thriving, and a local production that just wrapped up will soon be a part of it. “The View From Tall” is based on a play written by co-director Caitlin Parrish, who along with her directing partner Erica Weiss brought the story to the screen.
One of the key roles in the film is portrayed by Chicago actor Michael Patrick Thornton. Thornton is a veteran performer, who most recently appeared as Dr. Gabriel Fife in the ABC-tv series “Private Practice.” Thornton suffered a spinal stroke in 2003, and is now mobile via a wheelchair, but has still forged a full acting career which also included an appearance in “The Dilemma” – directed by Ron Howard – in 2011.

Private Practice began as a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off created by the great and wonderful Shonda Rhimes. We are in the middle of season six and fans already know this is the end for the medical drama. But no series can say good-bye without looking back at the journey. That means familiar faces. And one such face belongs to Audra McDonald, who confirms she’ll be visiting for the swansong season.

Chicago – The eponymous subject matter of Andrew Hinderaker’s enthralling new work “Suicide, Incorporated” is hardly a newfangled muse to dramatists. The concept of one’s self-sanctioned execution has inspired the minds of media architects from Poe to the executives at Lifetime Television Network (the latter of which tends to default to the exertion habitually). The question of an individual opting to terminate his life, especially when the meaning of which plagues the majority of us, is nary an easy one.
