Michael Morris‘ drama, To Leslie, was one of Hollywood’s underrated movies of 2022. Although critically acclaimed, it bombed at the Box Office—further proof that Box Office earnings are not a perfect judge of quality movies. Written by Ryan Binaco, the acclaimed is a heartbreaking, emotional rollercoaster ride of a local lottery winner. To Leslie was loosely adapted from the life and experiences of its writer, Ryan Binaco. Although it’s uncertain the extent to which the story depicts his struggles with his mother’s alcoholism, as Binaco’s mother was an inspiration for the script. The movie is the tale of a lottery...

To Leslie, the acclaimed low-budget drama that landed star Andrea Riseborough a surprise Oscar nomination for best actress (one that sparked no shortage of debate across the industry), has scored multiple international sales for Mister Smith Entertainment.
Having already been given a limited release in the U.S. in October last year with Momentum and a smaller bow in the U.K. in November with eOne, the film — in which Riseborough plays a single mother and alcoholic who squanders all the prize money she received after winning the lottery — has now landed deals for Australia and New Zealand (Kismet Movies), Spain (A Contracorriente Films), Japan (Kadokawa), Latin America (Cine Video y TV), Benelux (Paradiso Filmed Entertainment), Italy (Minerva Pictures), Greece/Cyprus (Femeway), Iceland (Samfilm), Israel (United King Films), the Middle East (Front Row Filmed Entertainment), Poland (M2 Films), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo Audiovisuais), Scandinavia (Nonstop Entertainment), Switzerland (Praesens-Film), Turkey (Filmarti Film...

Last week marked the annual ritual that comes every 12 months with Oscar nominations. Before the crack of dawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awakens the entire industry to reveal who will be nominated as “the best” from the year that was. And, as always, there were snubs and Oscars disappointments about who was ignored or passed over (and how all too often they appear to be Black when it comes to major categories like Best Director and Best Actress).
One major pleasant surprise, however, was the nomination of Andrea Riseborough in the Best Actress category for her role in To Leslie. The film premiered at SXSW earlier in the year and was an intimate character study that far too few audiences saw or even sought out. Nonetheless, the film’s central performance was nominated alongside expected nominees like Cate Blanchett for the spellbinding Tár and Michelle Yeoh...

Update: The Instagram post shared on the “To Leslie” account has been removed.
The movie awards industry is buzzing following the news that the Academy is “conducting a review of campaign procedures” after Andrea Riseborough received a surprise best actress Oscar nomination for the independent drama “To Leslie.”
The “grassroots” campaign enlisted numerous famous names to help spread the word about the small indie, but did that break any rules or just smartly play the awards game?
Celebrity influencers aside, an Instagram post on the “To Leslie” page may have violated the Academy’s rules and guidelines.
In a post dated two weeks ago, the official Instagram account for “To Leslie” quoted Richard Roeper’s blurb from his top 10 films of 2022 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he listed the movie at no. 5. The quote reads: “As much as I admired Blanchett’s work in ‘Tár,’ my favorite performance by...

Grassroots campaigning has its place — even in the Oscar race.
There was a collective gasp across Hollywood this week when Andrea Riseborough was nominated for best actress for her performance in To Leslie, an indie movie that many haven’t heard of despite rave reviews.
The Canadian-based Momentum Pictures acquired To Leslie out of the 2022 edition of South by Southwest. The film was given a limited theatrical release in North America and the U.K. in October 2022, but it did nominal business. It was also made available on premium VOD.
Now, however, cinema owners are asking Momentum if they might have another go. The micro-distributor, which is a division of Entertainment One, will play To Leslie in approximately six theaters in North America this weekend, according a person familiar with the plan. The following week, the movie is expected to be made available in select U.K. theaters.

Of all the snubs and surprises among the 95th Academy Award nominations, there was one that united most in a collective shock: Andrea Riseborough’s best actress nomination for her role as the title character in Momentum Pictures’ To Leslie.
Directed by Michael Morris from a screenplay by Ryan Binaco (inspired by his own relationship with his mother), To Leslie follows a woman who, many years after winning a 100,000-plus lottery jackpot, is estranged from her family and caught in the throes of addiction. When she shows up on her now-grown son’s doorstep — only to immediately cause conflict with her binge drinking — she returns to her childhood home to reckon with the past and the people she has hurt, and to get her life back on track.

I know it’s coming down to the wire for all of you Oscar nomination voters. Today (Tuesday) is the final day to submit, and as part of the last-minute push, I wanted to add another hat to all of those already tossed in the ring for Andrea Riseborough and her incandescent performance in the micro-budget indie feature “To Leslie.” This is an actress I’d never even heard of two weeks ago, and now I’m all in on her being worthy of a Best Actress nom.
Who is she? Where has she been all my life? It turns out she’s already had a pretty substantial career in a lot of films and stage productions as well as a small role in the Best Picture Oscar-winning “Birdman” and in “Oblivion” with Tom Cruise. But the British-born Riseborough has nonetheless remained largely unknown until the drumbeat began for her work in “To Leslie.

The stars are coming out for Andrea Riseborough’s turn in Michael Morris’ indie drama To Leslie.
Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Sarah Paulson and Edward Norton have hosted screenings, with more recent showings booked by Gwyneth Paltrow and Courteney Cox. Many more have also posted about it on social media including Aniston (“Beautiful”), Susan Sarandon (“beautiful, lil gem of a film”), Helen Hunt (“If you’re out there voting for performances, don’t do it till you see Andrea Riseborough”), Zooey Deschanel (“amazing movie”), Melanie Lynskey (“even for her this is next level”), Mira Sorvino (“absolutely stunning,...

“The nomination has been such a helpful step into breaking through,” reflects Andrea Riseborough on her Independent Spirit Awards citation for her performance in “To Leslie.” The actress stars in the title role of the film as a mother from Texas who had won 190,000 in the lottery, but lost it all and her relationships to alcoholism; the film chronicles her recovery and ultimate reunion with her son, played by Owen Teague. For a small feature that the actress notes was shot in only 19 days, the recognition is “vital.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Riseborough also serves as an executive producer on “To Leslie.” She felt passionately about working on the project both in front of and behind the camera because Ryan Binaco’s “script was beautiful and it wasn’t sensational in any way, and it certainly wasn’t saccharine.” The actress shares that the screenwriter penned the film for his mother,...

Andrea Riseborough’s acclaimed performance as the title character in To Leslie might be something of an underdog this season, but a recent Independent Spirit Award nomination for the actress suggests it is finding its audience, and that the plaudits are well-deserved. Directed by Michael Morris, the film tells the story of a woman struggling with an addiction to alcohol, a decade after winning — and promptly wasting — a small fortune in the state lottery. As she struggles to find her feet, her resolve is strengthened by her love for her son James (Owen Teague), with whom she’s desperate to reunite.
Deadline: Charlize Theron hosted a screening of To Leslie at CAA a few weeks back. What was that experience like for you?
Andrea Riseborough: It was so wonderful. Two things. First, and I think this is bigger than just that screening, is this feeling of real complicity among the audience.

This review originally ran on March 12, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at SXSW.
Who gets a second chance? A third? A 20th? And what is the price to pay for these opportunities? Director Michael Morris’s debut film “To Leslie” is a full-hearted, albeit conventional, ode to Leslie (Andrea Riseborough), a woman trying to break free from herself.
In the film’s opening credits, an old news clip airs: Once upon a time, Leslie won the lottery jackpot of just under 200,000 by playing her son’s birth date. She tells the anchor she wants to use the money to get on her feet, open a diner, maybe — but only after she’s bought everyone a round. More than a few thousand rounds later, we learn that these wide-eyed dreams never came to fruition.

For an actor, there’s an obvious showboat appeal to playing a serious out-of-control drunk. You can fight, you can rage, you can tap your inner party animal, you can rotate through emotions like a human mood ring, you can descend into the kind of degraded dishevelment that’s the lower-depths version of an awards-bait transformation. Yet to give a truly remarkable performance as an alcoholic, you have to make good on the old line about it — that someone who’s drunk is working hard not to act that way. They’re trying to fool the world in the same way they fool themselves.
In “To Leslie,” Andrea Riseborough plays a small-town West Texas single mother who’s a total desperate been-around-the-bend basket case, the kind of alcoholic who has messed up her life so badly that she’s got nothing left. In each scene, she shows you what Leslie...

The meat of this melancholy, live-action country ballad is left up to the imagination, somewhere in the missing years between the title credits and the point at which Michael Morris’s feature debut actually starts. It’s probably just as well, since To Leslie is a hard enough watch as it is, not because it’s significantly depressing (redemption is suggested in myriad moments in its two-hour running time) but because it’s a testament to Andrea Riseborough’s never less than committed performance that it’s hard to see such a sad and vulnerable woman snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at every turn. There are no indications on screen, but anecdotal reports that screenwriter Ryan Binaco based the script on his own mother seem pretty credible.
