Telluride Film Festival attendees were treated to an honest-to-goodness crowdpleaser on Friday night at the Werner Herzog Theatre in the form of “Nyad.” The feature directing debut from “Free Solo” Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin had the packed audience literally cheering before its credits rolled, an impressive show of support for the filmmakers and distributor Netflix.
Described by Netflix as the “remarkable true story” of long-distance swimmer, sportscaster, author, and motivational speaker Diana Nyad, the film focuses on Nyad’s many attempts to swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida – a feat she finally accomplished in 2013 at the age of 64. Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening stars as the prickly and controversial Nyad with two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster playing her steadfast coach, Bonnie Stoll – and the film, adapted from Nyad’s memoir by Julia Cox, gives both actors plenty of strong material with which to work. Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” finally made its debut at the 2019 New York Film Festival at a press and industry screening ahead of tonight’s official world premiere screening. The first reactions to the long-in-the-works gangster epic are pouring in from film critics and journalists and, for the most part, they are spectacular. While the de-aging VFX Scorsese used to make cast members Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci is proving hit or miss, the overall movie is being showered in strong praise.
“‘The Irishman’ is like a greatest hits album from a master of the medium. Yes, that’s a positive,” IndieWire chief critic Eric Kohn wrote on Twitter. “The artifice of de-aging is more feature than bug. It’s not ‘slow.’ It often moves like lightening and elsewhere it’s downright Bressonian.”

It has been a while since Jennifer Lopez has had a live-action film — namely, 1998’s “Out of Sight”– that earned a positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. I am happy to declare JLo has broken her losing streak and scored an unexpected major crowd-pleaser that also wooed critics after its premiere the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. If anyone was looking for a surprise breakout hit for Oscar attention a la “Green Book” this year,”Hustlers” seems to poised to slide into that spot.
The headline on Justin Chang‘s review in the “Los Angeles Times” says it all: “Jennifer Lopez is a star reborn in ‘Hustlers,’ a smart, bracing tale of strippers turned grifters.” Meanwhile, Chang is positively gushy about the singer-dancer-actress, who is probably better known as of late as a reality show judge on TV’s “World of Dance”: “As Ramona, a one-woman supernova who...

Remember when Renee Zellweger had Tom Cruise — and moviegoers — at “hello” in 1996’s “Jerry Maguire”? Or when she rebranded the working-girl archetype for the 21st-century in 2001’s “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and earned her first Academy Award nomination as a lead? Then there was her mastery of the art of singing, dancing and acting all at the same time as Roxie Hart, a murderous wannabe jazz-age chorine in 2002’s “Chicago,” the source of her second lead nod.
Back then, Zellweger was America’s sweetheart. But something happened after she won a supporting Oscar for her portrait of no-nonsense and self-sufficient mountain woman Ruby Thewes in 2003’s “Cold Mountain.”
Just when her career should have gone rocketing skyward, her opportunities on the big screen began to somewhat inexplicably shrink. Yes, that second Bridget Jones film in 2004 was a stinker, but at least she followed it with a sturdy stand-by-your-man role as Russell Crowe...

Early reviews have come swinging in for the latest Spider-Man flick. The consensus: a fun and satisfying sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” although it might tread over too familiar territory and be a bit overlong.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” currently stands with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes — the same score as its predecessor “Homecoming.” As the title suggests, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) traverses the landscape of foreign countries, as well as the landscapes of teenage drama and superhero mayhem.
Coming off the heels of the mega-hit “Avengers: Endgame,” would this latest Marvel movie feel slight in comparison?
“What does it feel like to watch a Marvel film in a post-Avengers world? Is there anything at stake left?” wrote Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman in his review. “It has to do with that mysterious, hard-to-bottle chemistry of audience and superhero — the flow of actor, character, mythology, and FX concept as they merge and navigate...

It turns out if anybody can find them somebody to love in the biographical musical film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” it’s star Rami Malek and his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Across the board, critics have praised Malek’s performance as one of the year’s best, while panning some of the film’s otherwise lackluster qualities, like its sanitization of Mercury’s sexuality and failure to live up to iconic band’s electrifying essence. Reviewers also noted the film’s behind-the-scenes tumult, with Malek replacing Sacha Baron Cohen, and Dexter Fletcher taking over as director. Bryan Singer, who was fired midway into the shoot after leaving the production without authorization, still retains the directing credit.
Read what critics have to say below:
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman:
“So with a performance as commanding as Rami Malek’s at its center, why isn’t ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ a better movie? Despite its electrifying subject,...

20th Century Fox unveiled Bryan Singer’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” for the first time at guild screenings in New York and Los Angeles over the weekend, and the buzz around Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury soared in first reactions posted on social media. While the movie as a whole is getting a mixed response (Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times calls the movie a “glorified Wikipedia entry”), Malek is being singled out for his “outstanding” lead role.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” chronicles the rise of rock band Queen and covers the time between the group’s formation and their iconic Live Aid performance in 1985. Malek has assured Queen fans the film also explores Mercury’s sexuality and AIDS diagnosis. The supporting cast includes Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Aidan Gillen, and Tom Hollander.

“This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman premiered his latest movie “Life Itself” at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it got panned by film critics and received some of the worst reviews of the year (the movie holds a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes from 42 reviews). The director was asked by TooFab about the reviews, to which he responded by sharing his belief that “something is inherently a little bit broken in our film criticism right now.”
“I think that the people with the widest reach are getting increasingly cynical and vitriolic and I think there are a couple of genres and a couple of ideas that they [attack, which] doesn’t speak to not just a mainstream audience, but also a sophisticated audience,” Fogelman said, while also noting a similar thing is happening in television criticism.

“A Star Is Born” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, and critics are raving about Bradley Cooper’s remake starring Lady Gaga, giving the film a score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics gave praise for Cooper behind and in front of the camera, but Gaga’s performance was also lauded as “extraordinary.”

‘Happytime Murders’ Is a ‘Strong Contender for the Worst Film of 2018,’ and 7 More Merciless Reviews
Might “The Happytime Murders” be the worst film of 2018? Critics seem to think so.
“Insipid. Imbeciles. Incomprehensible. Insane,” wrote Us Weekly’s Mara Reinstein. “I think we have a strong contender for the worst film of 2018.”
“‘The Happytime Murders’ has taken over the slot-previously held by ‘The Room’ — of being the single-worst movie of all time,” added film critic Danielle Solzman. “Calling this a film is a disgrace to all films ever made including — yes — ‘The Room.'”
Other critics called the film, by Brian Henson, his “deformed brainchild,” as well as “joyless” and “witless.” TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde wrote, “The movie fails its one big test: It’s just not all that funny. Screenwriter Todd Berger periodically provides moments that push the envelope so hard that they at least earn...

In a July filled with sequels, “Skyscraper” is the only blockbuster coming out this month that isn’t part of a franchise. While critics weren’t impressed by the script by director Rawson Marshall Thurber, Dwayne Johnson earned praise for his performance as Will Sawyer, an amputee forced to save his family from terrorists on a prosthetic leg.
The film opens showing the hostage situation that cost Sawyer his leg while working as an FBI agent. Ten years later, he has married Sarah (Neve Campbell), the medic who treated him and has taken a job in Hong Kong as head of security at the tallest building in the world. But when the building is attacked and Will is framed for it, he must save his family before it’s too late. Reviews for the film have been mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes setting the score at 58 percent.
