Following President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election, Republicans in seven states, including Wisconsin, took unprecedented action by casting fake electoral votes for Donald Trump. Correspondent Anderson Cooper investigates Wisconsin’s fake presidential electors and interviews Andrew Hitt, an attorney and former GOP state chair, who claims he and his fellow fake electors were deceived into signing the documents. South Dakota GOP Gov. Kristi Noem sparked controversy for detailing the killing of her farm dog, Cricket, in her new memoir No Going Back. In the book, Noem claims she shot the 14-month-old wirehaired pointer because she was “untrainable.” Noem said she also shot her goat on the same day due to behavior issues. Noem was met with outrage on social media.
In an interview with CBS News’ Margaret Brennan on Sunday, Noem suggested President Joe Biden‘s dog, Commander, should’ve met the same fate. Commander, a German shepherd, was involved in 24 biting incidents between October 2022 and July 2023. The dog was removed from the White House.
In the Face the Nation interview, Brennan asked Noem if she was trying to “look tough.”

The publisher behind Kristi Noem’s new political memoir, No Going Back, may be wishing they could take it all back.
On Monday, Noem again ducked questions about her claims of meeting North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, once again refusing to discuss her interactions with world leaders when questioned by a panel on CBS Mornings.
“Did you tell your ghostwriter to write that?” host Natalie Morales asked.

After shooting her own dog, Kristi Noem now seems to be gunning for Joe Biden’s pooch, Commander. In a trainwreck of an interview, Noem defended a passage where she seems to suggest Commander should be shot. She also defended her decision to remove a part of the book where she falsely claimed she met North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Former President Donald Trump was criticized by his own former vice president, Mike Pence, for saluting prisoners who participated in the January 6 Capitol riot and calling them “hostages” during the introduction of his Dayton, Ohio campaign rally.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the horribly and unfairly treated January 6th hostages,” the moderator of the rally on March 16 stated over the loudspeaker.
Trump raised his right hand and saluted as the “January 6 Choir” sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” The choir is composed of Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and others imprisoned for helping to advance the failed insurrection.
The rally started with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by January 6 defendants serving time in the Washington, D.C., jail.
“You see the spirit from the hostages, and that’s what they are: hostages,” Trump claimed at the rally. “They’ve been treated terribly and very unfairly. And you know that and everybody knows that.

Despite his repeated bragging that he “aced” a cognitive test while in office, many have questioned Trump’s mental fitness to be president in recent days. His opponent, former Trump cabinet member Nikki Haley, is making political hay out of his recent flub where he confused her with former House speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Don’t be surprised if you have someone that is 80 in office, their mental stability is going to continue to decline. That’s just human nature,” the former South Carolina governor said Sunday on Face the Nation.

CBS’ Margaret Brennan is attempting to combat an overwhelming news cycle by “connecting the dots” between domestic and foreign policy as the host of “Face The Nation.”
“You’re talking about a period of global instability in the Middle East, in the land war in Europe, with the growing competition with China, and you have back here at home some of the basic functioning of our institutions of democracy being paralyzed,” Brennan told TheWrap.
For “Face the Nation” Brennan said, “We try to weave all of those together and explain that one affects the other.”
But between Brennan’s dual role at the network, as anchor and chief foreign affairs correspondent, there are “a lot of fires in a lot of places right now,” she said.

Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper spoke out against Donald Trump and other Washington Republicans, urging for greater support for Ukraine as its war with Russia continues.
When asked by CBS’ Margaret Brennan what he thinks Americans should expect of U.S. foreign policy if Trump is elected in 2024, Esper responded, “I suspect that he will do what he says.”
“He will somehow attempt to negotiate a deal between Russia and Ukraine, and that won’t fly,” Esper continued. “There’s only one person that can end this conflict in Ukraine, and that’s Vladimir Putin, and he’s not about to do that anytime soon.”
Trump has frequently voiced concern that the U.S. is spending too much time and money on assisting Ukraine. He has also stated that, if elected for a second term, he would have the power to end the war “within 24 hours.”

Barry Diller, the former head of ABC, Fox Broadcasting Company, and Paramount and current Chairman and Senior Executive, Iac and Expedia Group, stirred the pot during an appearance Sunday on CBS talk show “Face the Nation.”
Diller had several suggestions on Hollywood for host Margaret Brennan, and comments that are bound to be controversial.
Among them:
*** As a good-faith measure, Diller said the executives and the “most-paid” actors should take a 25% pay cut to try and narrow the difference between those who get highly paid and those that don’t.
*** He suggested a Sept. 1 strike settlements deadline. Otherwise, “next year, there’s not going to be many programs for anybody to watch. So, you’re going to see subscriptions get pulled, which is going to reduce the revenue of all these movie companies, television companies, the result of which is that there will be no programs.”

The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”

ABC News’ This Week With George Stephanopoulos topped the key adults 25-54 demographic among the Sunday news programs the 2021-22 broadcast television season, while CBS News’ Face the Nation again was the most watched in total viewers.
All of the network Sunday shows shed viewers from the 2020-21 season, a period that included the momentous presidential election and its aftermath. Since then, some of the programs have gone through some changes, while there has been some speculation of the long-term future of the Sunday mainstays and their Beltway focus.
This Week, which features Stephanopoulos, Jonathan Karl and Martha Raddatz as hosts, averaged 572,000 viewers in the demo, a decline of 11 from the previous season. “This investigation is not winding down,” Kinzinger said. “We may be towards the end of this tranche of hearings, we may have more hearings in the future and the investigation is still ongoing.”

Joe Biden Tells Lester Holt He’s Done A “Deep Dive” On “About Four” Potential Supreme Court Nominees
NBC News released the first clip from Lester Holt’s Super Bowl sit-down with Joe Biden, in which the president said he’s done a “deep dive” on “about four” potential Supreme Court nominees to succeed Justice Stephen Breyer.
A longer version of the interview, taped earlier Thursday in Culpepper, Va, will air as part of NBC’s pre-game show Sunday, continuing a tradition where the host network lands an interview with the sitting president.
“I think whomever I pick will get a vote from the Republican side for the following reason: I’m not looking to make an ideological choice here,” Biden said. “I am looking for someone that can replace Judge Breyer with the same kind of capacity that Judge Breyer had, with an open mind, who understands the Constitution, interprets it in a way that is consistent with the mainstream interpretation of the Constitution.”

US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told Face The Nation host Margaret Brennan on Sunday that low risk holiday gatherings are fine, as long as strict precautions are followed in the omicron era.
Murthy proposed a somewhat draconian approach to getting together in the joyful season.
“The concern and the challenge we have right now in the country, Margaret, is that we have millions of people who are still unvaccinated, which poses a risk to their lives, but also poses an increased risk of transmission,” Murthy said. “But if you do as many families, you get vaccinated and boosted. You use testing judiciously before you gather, you gather in well-ventilated spaces and use masks whenever you can in public indoor spaces, your risk can be quite low and your holidays can be quite fulfilling.”
Murthy said there’s much yet to be known about omicron. That includes whether the variant is resistant to current vaccines.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb once spent Sunday mornings surfing through TV’s spate of venerable public affairs programs. In recent months, that has become impossible.
Gottlieb, a former Fda commissioner and a well-connected adviser in the worlds of medicine and health business, can’t sit back and look at the Sunday shows because he has, over the past year, become a central element of one of them. He has been interviewed on CBS’ “Face the Nation” so many times that he has become one of the most frequent non-journalist guests in the history of the show, which launched in 1954. Only former Senator John McCain has appeared more often on the show — 112 times — throughout its nearly six decades on the air. Gottlieb this past Sunday made his 73rd appearance on the program, surpassing Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been on the program 69 times, and Senator Bob Dole, who has been on 64 times.
