It’s great to see the always terrific Raúl Castillo in a lead role, bringing both despair and tenacious grit to a luckless blue-collar father whose dreams of liquidity are shattered by a cryptocurrency scam. Cutter Hodierne’s thriller about three financial crime victims who go after the man responsible, Cold Wallet, doesn’t always make the tech talk crackle or exactly nail the tone he appears to be going for, of home invasion tension streaked with dark humor. But solid performances and a pulpy scenario that keeps you guessing make this a suspenseful watch.
While it’s clear that director Hodierne and screenwriter John Hibey know the crypto world, your mileage may vary depending on familiarity with meme stocks and doxing, securities fraud and blockchain. I confess it’s all Greek to me. Films like Dumb Money took a more playful route to the little-guy investor bucking against capitalist chicanery,...

Steven Soderbergh is turning up the heat on cryptocurrency scams in thriller “Cold Wallet.”
Soderbergh officially presents the feature, directed by Cutter Hodierne (“Fishing Without Nets”). “Cold Wallet” is set to premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 8 as part of the Narrative Spotlight section; the film is among IndieWire’s must-see picks for the festival.
“This smart, spiky, off-center take on the vigilante genre really kept me engrossed in a how-much-crazier-is-this-going-to-get way, which I love,” Soderbergh said in a press statement after “Cold Wallet” won the Decentralized Pictures and Soderbergh’s Andrews/Bernard Award.
The official synopsis reads: “After losing everything in a cryptocurrency scam, a ragtag team of vigilante Redditors attempt to kidnap the kingpin who screwed them over. But when the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game.”

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

As a widower with dementia, no one believes a UFO has crashed in Milton’s back yard or that he’s caring for an extraterrestrial – until his neighbours find out
Screenwriter Gavin Steckler and director Marc Turtletaub have given us this goofy, likable new twist on Et. In the Mathison/Spielberg classic from 1982, the visiting extraterrestrial found safety within the secret world of children, whose existence is beneath the grownups’ notice. Now the space alien finds himself protected by old people, who are used to being patronised and ignored.
Chief among the alien’s allies is Milton, played by Ben Kingsley, an ageing widower in whose back garden his spaceship crash-lands, and who, with instinctive neighbourly kindness, welcomes the mute, hairless naked interplanetary creature into his house. Milton has dementia, and so when he tells locals that he is having to get extra food in for the alien, no one...

After appearing in the majority of “Succession” episodes, Hiam Abbass is finally an Emmy nominee. The actress recurred in all four seasons of the HBO series as Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) wife Marcia, even as their relationship was rocked by Logan’s affairs with Rhea Jarrell — who could forget Abbass’s shakedown of Holly Hunter? — and others. Abbass returned for two episodes of the final season, for which she nabbed a bid for Best Drama Guest Actress. Could she prevail on her very first try?
To do so, Abbass will have to best a formidable group of contenders, including two others from her own show. Cherry Jones reprised her Emmy-winning character Nan Pierce from the second season of “Succession” in the fourth season premiere and earned her fifth career bid, while Harriet Walter has earned her third nomination for “Succession,” and fifth overall, as Logan’s former wife and...

Releases keep coming but talent is not comfortable promoting films, even indies, even if productions have waivers or don’t need them. Where that’s leading isn’t clear. “Who’s going to take the plunge first? We’ll see. The festivals will be the big test,” said one independent distribution exec.
From a moderate release like Jules, in nearly 800 theaters, to Sundance-premiering The Pod Generation, starring Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor on 100 screens, to French film Between Two Worlds with Juliette Binoche, opening on two screens this weekend, stars were not comfortable stepping out amid strikes. The WGA and AMPTP resume bargaining today for the first time in over three months. SAG-AFTRA remains in a standoff with studios over deteriorating pay and working conditions for its members.

To watch Marc Turtletaub’s “Jules” — a middlebrow dramedy starring Ben Kingsley as a widowed, half-senile eccentric so desperate for someone to care about him that he casually befriends the alien who crashes into his backyard — is to be reminded that truly strange movies have become hard to find. These days, a film this unusual is about as rare as a call from Milton’s estranged son, who hasn’t phoned home in several years.
Not that “Jules” would seem all that bizarre just by looking at it. On the contrary, this modest late summer whatsit looks and feels just like a million other milquetoast charmers aimed at audiences of a certain age, what with its reassuringly nice score and endless array of conflict-avoidant medium shots. The difference here is that those medium shots feature Sir Ben Kingsley sitting on a couch next to a silent and seemingly naked extraterrestrial...

If it’s true that youth is wasted on the young, then so are friendly aliens.
Sure, the kids in E.T. had a great time with their pint-sized buddy from another planet, and so have countless other children in family-themed sci-fi films over the years. His “retirement” a decade ago didn’t last. It couldn’t possibly. Steven Soderbergh is just too curious, too prolific, and far too in love with the work — the process of assembling a team to complete a herculean task, in particular — to hang it up. It’s a big reason why the 60-year-old filmmaker and television creator is a massive fan of Bravo’s Below Deck, about the crew of a charter yacht catering to its filthy rich clients’ impossible whims, and also why he’s constantly innovating. Over the past decade,...

Ben Kingsley, who likes to go to extremes, has played his share of frowningly overcivilized repressed geeks and also his share of seething walking-id maniacs. But for all of Kingsley’s dexterous light-and-dark range, it’s still rare to see him take on a character as painfully mild as Milton, the small-town codger he plays in “Jules.”
Milton, who is 78, lives by himself in a handsome dark-shingled house in Boonton, Penn. In the opening scene, he takes one of his long slow walks through town, then stands up at the open-mic forum in front of the Boonton city council, where he suggests changing the town motto from “A great place to call home” to “A great place to refer to as home.” He’s that kind of harmless eccentric fuddy-duddy with maybe a screw or two coming loose. Director Steven Soderbergh has never really been a fan of orthodoxy, and his idiosyncratic approach to his own work was on full display Sunday night when he launched his latest project, sci-fi series Command Z, at the Metrograph in New York. The Michael Cera-starring dystopian narrative, inspired by Kurt Andersen’s book Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America: A Recent History, was shown as part of a “secret screening” for members of the downtown theater.
Soderbergh followed the screening with a Q&a with Florida Representative Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z congressman, explaining to the audience, “I don’t really want to talk about the show,” and instead quizzing Frost about how he stays hopeful. “How do we convince people to not give up?” Soderbergh asked Frost, who in turn discussed his path to politics and his work organizing.

"You put a wormhole in a washing machine?" Oh this looks cool. Steven Sodebergh revealed a surprise new series that he created in secret on his own dime that will be released for free on his own website. It's called Command Z, a reference to the keyboard command to "undo" (on Apple computers). Also known as The Pendulum Project while in development. The series is about a group of three people in the future who are tasked with using a wormhole time machine to travel back to 2023 and "inhabit" people as voices inside of their head. Their mission: to stop America from turning to the worst and prevent the dystopian future that lies ahead, since 2023 is the last time in which we can do this. It seems Soderbergh is really upset about how terrible America has become, too. Starring Michael Cara, Roy Wood Jr., Chloe Radcliffe, J.J. Maley, Zoe Winters,...

A rolling stone gathers no moss. The ever-busy Steven Soderbergh, who directed this year’s “Magic Mike Xxl” and the new Max series “Full Circle,” announced on Friday that a new short-form series he made in secret with Michael Cera will debut on July 17.
Called “Command Z,” the science-fiction show is about a trio of people tasked by Cera’s Oz-like figure to travel back in time to 2023 to help save the world.
“I think by now you’re used to me describing the somewhat mercurial behavior of our boss, Mr/Dr Soderbergh, but this most recent development is next level and can’t be kept to myself for reasons you’ll soon understand,” the newsletter writer for Soderbergh’s production company, Extension 765, wrote in a blast on Friday. “If I seem hedgy, it’s because A) None of us have seen it; and B) it’s apparently about ninety minutes long,...

"You've seen the movies, you know what happens to these guys when they fall to Earth." Bleecker Street has revealed the first official trailer for Jules, a sci-fi indie comedy from filmmaker Marc Turtletaub, best known for his charming film Puzzle from a few years ago. This recently premiered at the Sonoma Film Festival and will be playing in theaters nationwide starting in August before the summer is over. An unusual and unexpected visitor brings together several people living in a small town in rural Western Pennsylvania. A lonely older man befriends a mute alien visitor. Described as "a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life - thanks to this unlikely stranger." The film stars Ben Kingsley, Harriet Sansom Harris, Zoe Winters, Jane Curtin, Donald Paul, Jeff Kim, with Jade Quon as Jules. This looks surprisingly charming, with a cute lil' blue man alien in it.

Costume designer Michelle Matland didn’t necessarily “pre-grieve” the end of “Succession” like Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) attempted to do with the death of his father, but she’s already feeling wistful about the show’s conclusion.
“I think the number one thing that I will miss – it makes me sad because I don’t know if I’ll have it again – is the collaboration,” Matland tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview conducted just days before the show’s series finale aired. “The idea that you have a voice, you have a brain, and these incredible talents all came together and listened, heard, thought, projected, gave information and took ideas and enjoyed the company of people who are interested in storytelling on so many levels. I know that’s the thing I’m going to miss. I missed it already.”

In the Andrew Llloyd Webber musical Evita, there is a plaintive number sung by a character known only as the Mistress, shortly after Eva has taken her place in Juan Peron’s affections. “I don’t expect my love affairs to last for long/Never fool myself that my dreams will come true,” the Mistress bemoans, adding, “all my words desert me/So anyone can hurt me and they do.” It’s the cri de coeur of the eternal sidepiece, the woman who constantly invests her hopes and dreams in powerful,...

When Logan Roy's ex-wives and mistresses gathered in the pews of a New York City church to mourn the angry, powerful man they loved, it was a quietly powerful moment in a "Succession" episode full of them. Viewers knew three of the four women who made up the front row of funeral attendees: there was Marcia (Hiam Abbass), Logan's current wife who left on a permanent shopping trip, only to return to assert her dominance in the wake of his death. There was Kerry (Zoe Winters), Logan's assistant-turned-rumored lover who proved herself a terrible news anchor when he was alive and a genuinely emotional person once he died. And then there was Lady Caroline (Harriet Walter), the icy, aristocratic mother of Kendall, Shiv, and Roman.

This article contains spoilers for season 4 episode 9 of Succession.
Succession’s Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is well known for his complicated relationships with the women in his life, keeping them at arm’s length until they are no longer useful to him. There are very few people that Logan respects in general, but even women within the inner circle of Waystar like Gerri (J. Smith Cameron) and Karolina (Dagmara Dominczyk) don’t seem to be taken as seriously as they should be. As Shiv (Sarah Snook) so eloquently puts it during her eulogy at Logan’s funeral, “he couldn’t fit a whole woman in his head.” This sentiment couldn’t be more clear in one of the best scenes of the episode that saw Shiv, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), and Roman’s (Kieran Culkin) mother Caroline (Harriet Walter) bring all of Logan’s former wives and mistresses front and center for the ceremony.

Grief can do funny things to a person. One minute you can be icing someone out, convinced they'll end up on the opposite side of a complex estate issue as you. The next you can be sitting next to them at the funeral, quietly sharing memories of the deceased. That's exactly what happened to Marcia (Hiam Abbass) on this week's episode of "Succession," as the show made a surprisingly lovely pivot away from its cutting drama and satire to give Logan's exes a pure, united moment.
"Succession" has always cared more about what feels true to its characters than it has about what feels consistent for its story. Most shows would have crowned Marcia Hbic at Logan's wake and never looked back. If they bothered to show her again at all, it would be making an even bigger power...

Viewers may have initially dismissed Kerry as another of Logan’s mistresses, but she soon established herself as a key player within the Waystar Royco machine. This post contains spoilers through the seventh episode of "Succession" season 4.
The political situation in "Succession" has always been fascinating. Back in season 1, Shiv (Sarah Snook) ended up working on the Presidential campaign of Gil Eavis, an anti-billionaire Bernie Sanders-type character. Although "Succession" has always felt fairly realistic with its take on how politics and wealth intermingle, the fact that Gil would have Shiv on his campaign team was admittedly a bit of a stretch.
If real-life Bernie Sanders ever mentioned in an interview that he had Rupert Murdoch's daughter on his team, he'd almost certainly get some pushback from his base. And although his meeting with Logan during Shiv's wedding in the season 1 finale was never made public, it would still be a massive PR risk for Gil if the press ever got a whiff of it.
So it may have been for the best when Shiv...

Maren Morris is one person who's celebrating Tucker Carlson's exit from Fox News loudly and proudly. The news that Carlson and Fox were cutting ties and that his long-running show on the network, "Tucker Carlson Tonight," would come to an end came down on Monday, April 25. Morris, who Carlson once dubbed a "lunatic country music person" on his show, did not hold back on her Instagram Story in response.
In one Instagram posted on Monday (via Et), she wrote, "Happy Monday, MotherTucker," under a screenshot of the "Tucker Carlson Tonight" where the bottom third read, "Lunatic Country Music Person," over a photo of Morris. In a second post, she shared a graphic that read, "The only Tuckers allowed are the drag queens." In a final post, she shared a screenshot of a "Succession" meme poking fun at Tucker's sacking which read, "Breaking: Tucker Carlson's replacement has already been announced,...

Succession viewers have joked that a debate stemming from the show’s latest episode is the new version of “the dress”.
HBO’s hit drama is currently airing its fourth and final season, which has already seen plenty of explosive plot moments.
*Succession spoilers below – you have been warned*
After the shocking death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in episode three, episode four saw the family dealing with the aftermath and considering what happens to Waystar Royco next.
Only adding to the confusion, Frank (Peter Friedman) produces a document, partially written in pencil and never shown to Logan’s lawyers, suggesting that Kendall (Jeremy Strong) should succeed him.
Kendall’s name has been underlined, but his siblings Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) qucikly point out that the clumsily drawn line could have been Logan crossing it out.

Finally, you soon might be able to actually understand Christopher Nolan movies without subtitles.
Amazon’s Prime Video is rolling out a streaming feature that will allow viewers to increase the dialogue in movies and TV shows.
The feature is called Dialogue Boost and, according to Amazon, it lets you raise the volume of dialogue relative to background music and effects, “creating a more comfortable and accessible viewing experience that cannot be found on any other global streaming service.”
Dialogue Boost analyzes the program’s audio and uses AI to spot points where dialogue may be tough to hear. Then speech is isolated and its audio enhanced to make dialogue clearer. Amazon points out this is actually different than using a traditional center channel speaker in a home theater setup because it “delivers a targeted enhancement to portions of spoken dialogue instead of general amplification.”
