Just last month, we learned that Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) had signed on to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for A24 and writer/director John Patton Ford. Now Huntington has gone into production, and Deadline has revealed that the cast also includes Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), and Raff Law (Masters of the Air). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.
Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. Kind Hearts and Coronets told the following story: When Louis D’Ascoyne Mazzini, who hails from a royal family,...

Francis Ford Coppola hit the Cannes Film Festival last month to triumphantly celebrate the completion of his epic film “Megalopolis,” which he has been working on for nearly 40 years.
The celebrations were somewhat compromised, however, by mixed reviews for the film itself, as well as a Guardian report that alleged “chaotic behavior” on the set of “Megalopolis,” including the “Godfather” director reportedly “pulling women to sit on his lap” and “trying to kiss some of the topless and scantily-clad female extras.”
New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis interviewed Coppola in Cannes, and did not hesitate to raise the topic of the accusations. Coppola responded in a “rambling fashion,” Dargis wrote in an interview published Thursday. The filmmaker responded by first mentioning his mother Italia, who he said resembled Hedy Lamarr. “My mother told me that if you make an advance toward a woman, it means you disrespect her, and...

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

Alice on her visit to Wonderland said: “I give myself very good advice but I very seldom follow it.” First-time director Megan Park also takes her young protagonist on a trip of a different sort to explore this idea - only the advice Elliott (Maisy Stella) is giving to herself comes not from her current self, but the 39-year-old version (Aubrey Plaza).
The younger Elliott is about to head to college, enjoying the last few days on her family’s cranberry farm and, like most people her age, mostly concerned with starting her new life away from the place and enjoying the last few make-out sessions with her barista girlfriend (Alexandra Riviera). Things get interesting when she heads out to an island with her mates Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks) for a shroom session. That’s when she has a strange encounter with the “old ass” incarnation of herself.

Back in October of 2022, it was announced that legendary filmmaker John Waters, who has brought us such films as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, Cecil B. Demented, and Pecker (among others), was teaming up with Village Roadshow Pictures for an adaptation of his “craziest” novel, Liarmouth. We’ve since heard that Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) is up for the lead role in the film, which would mark Waters’ first time directing since 2004’s A Dirty Shame… but if you’ve been wondering why Liarmouth still hasn’t made it into production a year and a half after it was announced, Waters gives an answer in a new interview with IndieWire: he hasn’t been able to get funding for it.
When asked for a Liarmouth status update, Waters said, “I’m not going to… [Starts to laugh.] Every time I comment on that, some article comes out that causes me hell,...

After John Waters made the once-improbable leap to the mainstream with “Hairspray,” a joyous film so devoid of filth that it was rated PG, he found himself in bizarre circumstances: He’d made a box-office success, a home-video smash, and his next film would be produced by Imagine Entertainment and released by Universal Pictures.
That film, the 1990 “Cry-Baby,” failed to duplicate the success of its predecessor, but it developed a cult following thanks in no small part to its star Johnny Depp. As such, the film’s popularity has earned it a 4K/Ultra HD reissue via Kino Lorber that will hit shelves May 28.
Waters was so excited about seeing his film receive this specialized treatment that he agreed to make the promotional rounds for its release. When IndieWire hopped on the phone with him, he detailed the origins of the film and his love of its music, discussed his...

The Megalopolis parties and debates last week generously fed Cannes’ appetite for media buzz. Fest-goers were reminded that Francis Coppola’s journey had been a thrill ride for those who witnessed it, invested in it or were impacted by its turmoil.
The auteur was trailed all week by fans and family, many having survived the melodramatic ordeals of One from the Heart, the operatic intrigues of Apocalypse Now and finally the utopian fever dream titled Megalopolis, which he financed by putting $120 million of his own money on the line.
All represented a defiant challenge to the pre-algorithmic definitions of risk and reward. But one long-term participant in the Coppola drama was a non-presence in Cannes last week — though he is receiving an honorary Palme d’Or on Saturday.
He’s George Lucas, the billionaire nerd from Modesto who in former years contributed a discipline and order to their company’s (Zoetrope) unruly landscape.

Disney+ has greenlit a new Marvel series centered around Vision, Paul Bettany will reprise his role. More on the new series here.
Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War lie ahead
Ever since Marvel extended the MCU into television series, they have divided critics and fans, although praise has often been given to shows like Wandavision, which told its story in a way Marvel hadn’t attempted before.
Disney+ has confirmed that Paul Bettany will reprise his role to lead Vision. The character was killed by Thanos in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and later returned in WandaVision.
The series has been in development since 2022. According to Deadline, the series will follow Vision as he tries to regain his memory and humanity, While the focus is on Vision’s story, there is also the possibility of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) to appear, which would make sense given how interconnected the two characters’ stories are in the MCU.

Mike Figgis has been shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary for the past 18 months about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. It’s called Megadoc.
Figgis told me Monday that it’s been edited but there’s allowance for the fact that the film played in competition here at the Cannes Film Festival. He recorded an interview with the cinema titan the other day.
Figgis, who was introduced into the Coppola clan back in the mid 1990s after directing Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas, told me that the documentary is “very much a fly-on-the-wall” and also features conversations with various cast members — Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Shia Labeouf — and Coppola’s wife Eleanor Coppola, who shot the footage and directed her own study of her husband’s work for the acclaimed Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, about the making of 1979s Apocalypse Now.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival set the tone and atmosphere for a slew of awaited movies coming this Summer. Amidst that long line, Megalopolis, from Francis Ford Coppola, has become a major talking point in recent times, especially after its seven-and-a-half-minute-long standing ovation at the fest screening. On the other side of the slate, anticipation runs equally high for The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt as the voice of the famed orange cat.

In a remarkable coincidence, the world premiere of the sci-fi flick happened in tandem with the early airings of the family comedy, making way for an interesting clash of reviews. Labeled as one of, if not the most ambitious project by the award-winning director, the Adam Driver-led movie faced some tough competition from the animated feature. Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is receiving mixed reviews from critics after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. While some appreciate the director’s crazy vision for the movie, others deem it as a disaster. Coppola doesn’t care as he is happy that he got to do the film that he had been planning since the ’70s.
He shared that he was done with studios not letting him make movies he wanted like they did with his vision for Western drama. Coppola revealed that he originally optioned the script of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven but he failed to convince any studio to put in the money for the project.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.
Exclusive: One of the many talking points to emerge from this week’s Cannes Film Festival screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis is whether distributors will be able to replicate the film’s ‘fourth wall moment’.
As most reviews for the film detail, at a certain point in Wednesday’s world premiere a performer walked onto the stage in front of the cinema screen and engaged with Adam Driver’s character in a device known as “breaking the fourth wall.”
Is it plausible that distributors would replicate such a moment in every screening? Unlikely. But at least one will give it a good shot.
Jean Labadie, who runs the film’s French distributor Le Pacte, told Deadline: “We certainly will do a lot of such performances. With four screenings a day in many...

Aubrey Plaza was on hand to promote her latest movie, Megalopolis—the Francis Ford Coppola epic science fiction drama decades in the making—at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
I love Plaza’s often whimsical and quirky red carpet style, but I’m not thrilled with her Loewe Cannes Film Festival premiere ensemble. Fortunately, she quickly redeemed herself at the Megalopolis photocall by wearing a summery Miu Miu outfit.

Legion alum Aubrey Plaza has two very different projects on the horizon - Marvel Studios' WandaVision spin-off Agatha All Along and Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi epic Megalopolis - and both were filmed on the same lot in Atlanta, which Plaza took full advantage of!
With the respective productions overlapping for two weeks, Plaza decided to have some fun by "harassing" Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito and the rest of her Megalopolis cast-mates while in full costume as her MCU character.
“I would literally go from one to the other and would put my Wow wig on and my Wow costume on," Plaza tells Deadline. Aubrey Plaza is a charming actress and delightful comedian, but what catches the attention of her fans the most are the very quirky characters she often chooses to portray. In her breakthrough role in Parks and Recreation, the actress is deadpan and sarcastic, while in her latest The White Lotus’ the actress is known for her cynicism while battling marital tension. Even in the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the actress plays an ambitious power-hungry journalist.

So, what is it about the actress starring only in such unconventional roles? Plaza states that it is just her way of making the world a better place by accepting characters that one normally would describe as outsiders.

Like the future, the Croisette is so bright, you gotta wear shades. Fortunately, Persol has found a perch in Cannes in time for the festival and summer season with a new collection and pop-up in a prime location. The Italian eyewear brand is setting up shop on the La Terrasse by Albane atop the Jw Marriott, site of many a premiere afterparty and A-list affair over the years.
Persol is sponsoring the space, which will be used for press junkets by day and parties by night. Michelin star chef Mauro Colagreco — owner of Mirazur restaurant in Menton, France — has been recruited to oversee the edible offerings at La Terrasse. Also on the menu: Persol will present a showroom of the spring/summer ’24 collection that includes three options, each designed with soft rectangular frames and adorned with extra-large 80 mm arrows that run along the front and temple, made to amplify the Persol heritage.

Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore are teased as playing the same character for feminist body-horror thriller “The Substance.”
The Cannes feature, which premieres in competition at the festival, has already been picked up by Mubi for worldwide distribution. French director Coralie Fargeat helms her sophomore film, following her debut “Revenge” which premiered at TIFF in 2017.
“The Substance” is titled for a mysterious serum that transforms users into the ideal versions of themselves. The elusive official synopsis reads: “It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each. A perfect balance. Easy. Right? If you respect the balance…what could possibly go wrong?”
The teaser shows Moore intently watching an ad for the substance injection and contemplating undergoing its cellular division. Could Qualley be who Moore transforms into?...

Francis Ford Coppola has surely expected a better turn of events for his spic sci-fi drama Megalopolis that has been in his mind for almost 50 years before the production started.
Having been set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year, the movie was definitely one of the most anticipated flicks brought by the widely acclaimed director and s star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf and many others.
Sadly, the film’s grandeur hasn’t made its trick yet.
Now that Megalopolis got its official premiere with Coppola and the main cast being present at the festival, most of those who got to see the movie the other day aren’t that enthusiastic anymore. Some even had a blatant Wtf reaction claiming that the director brutally violated all of the cinema’s pivotal rules.

Despite Francis Ford Coppola criticizing Marvel’s influence on Hollywood, it was an MCU series that overlapped with his “Megalopolis.”
Aubrey Plaza, who plays character Wow Platinum in Coppola’s epic and also stars in upcoming “Agatha All Along” Disney+ series, told Deadline that she brought some Marvel shenanigans to the “Megalopolis” set. Both projects were filmed on the same lot in Atlanta, with their respective productions overlapping for two weeks.

At one point, when I was dressed in the Marvel character, I snuck onto the ‘Megalopolis’ set and I started harassing Giancarlo Esposito and Adam [Driver] and everyone,” Plaza recalled. “It was absolutely insane behavior.

Francis Ford Coppola has done well at Cannes, winning the Palme d’Or twice, for “The Conversation” (1974) and “Apocalypse Now” (1979), another film mired in controversy during production that sailed into release as a critical and box office success ($85 million worldwide), nominated for eight Oscars and winning two. Now the winemaker is back in Cannes with controversial “Megalopolis,” a 2 hour, 18 minute movie which he debuted at a gala premiere Thursday night to the usual sustained standing ovation (measured between seven and 10 minutes). There were a few boos at the press screening. He had dreamed of making the overstuffed extravaganza for 40 years since he wrote early versions of it in the ‘80s, but finally spent $120 million of his own money to produce and direct it.

“To do a Roman epic set in modern America, I had no idea that the politics of today would make that so relevant,” Francis Ford Coppola said Friday in Cannes about this $120 million 40-years-in-the-making epic Megalopolis.
The movie follows The City of New Rome, an allegory for New York City, in which Adam Driver’s architect Cesar Catilina squares off with a regressive status quo mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) as well as radical renegade Clodio Pulcher (Shia Labeouf) in the hopes of building a utopian society.
“What’s happening in America, in our republic, in our democracy is exactly how Rome lost their republic thousands of years ago,” The Godfather filmmaker said during a press conference for the movie after it’s Cannes world premiere on Thursday night.
“Our politics have taken us to the point where we might lose a republic, and so it’s not people who...

‘Megalopolis’ Is Talk Of Cannes
A more straightforward affair: After a tense build-up shaped by endless rumors of an imminent #MeToo expose and a potential labor strike, the first week of this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been a more straightforward affair. The most controversial event so far has been Thursday evening’s premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-anticipated Megalopolis. The critical response has been predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows. Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.

On Friday afternoon, at the most anticipated press conference of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola fielded questions about his latest work, Megalopolis, which had its world premiere at the fest in competition on Thursday night, deeply diving critics and audience members. The presser started more than half an hour late, a little unusual for Cannes, which unlike Hollywood events, generally run on time. But the filmmaker arrived in high spirits, stating that hearing applause at the premiere gave him feelings of “relief and joy.”
Coppola, 85, spent decades — and $120 million of his own money — trying to get the sci-fi epic across the finish line. The shoot was chaotic, THR reported in real time, with key creative talent quitting or being fired along the way; and this week The Guardian quoted sources from the set who suggested that Coppola made unwanted advances towards actresses.

As Megalopolis continues to seek a U.S. distribution deal, its writer-director Francis Ford Coppola was asked to comment on the state of the film industry and whether the movie’s best destination is on streaming.
“Streaming is what we use to call home video,” was the director’s first response to the query, after the question was posed Friday at a Cannes Film Festival press conference, a day after the pic’s world premiere screening.
Coppola then added that his hope is his dystopian epic finds a home in “large theater with 600 to 700 people.”

Francis Ford Coppola, the fabled director behind classics like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, has poured 40 years of his life and $120 million of his own money into his latest passion project, Megalopolis. This self-funded sci-fi epic follows an architect with the power to stop time as he attempts to rebuild a devastated metropolis as a utopia, despite facing opposition from the corrupt Mayor.

It’s finally here. After many reports about production issues, screenings and 40 years worth of waiting, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The anticipated epic is being met with a lot of mixed reactions (and confusion) from the reviewers, some lauding the audacity of the movie and others questioning its existence.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic David Rooney offers: “It’s windy and overstuffed, frequently baffling and way too talky, quoting Hamlet and The Tempest, Marcus Aurelius and Petrarch, ruminating on time, consciousness and power to a degree that becomes ponderous. Over the last couple of months, multiple reports about Megalopolis — including from THR — have shed light on the project that Coppola has been discussing for decades. He poured a stunning $120 million of his own money...

Below, we run through some of the first reactions.
Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the work of a master artist who has taken to Imax like Caravaggio to canvas. It is a true modern masterwork of the kind that outrages with its sheer audacity.”
He continued: “Halfway through, there’s a very audacious gimmick that tears down the fourth wall in ways younger filmmakers can only dream of. Coppola breaks many of the cardinal...
