Chicago – I have to admit that I went into my review of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” expecting to feel torture not unlike when I suffered through “Yogi Bear” or “Gulliver’s Travels.” Live-action family entertainment has been the other side of the coin to the influx of quality animated entertainment. For every Pixar, there’s a “Chipwrecked.” For every “How to Train Your Dragon,” there’s a “Zookeeper.” To that end, I found “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” totally harmless, mostly because Jim Carrey gives it his all and brings enough manic glee to the proceedings to keep it from falling flat.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Like So many family films, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is about a selfish, wounded man learning to be a good father. It’s remarkable how many writers work out their issues with their parents through family films. The dad in question is, of course, Mr. Popper (Carrey), a man whose distant,...

Movies like “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” aren’t necessarily made for critics, who are frequently presumed to have it in for live-action family films, with their primary colors and jokey, obvious set-ups for the lowest common denominator. And director Mark Waters’ film, starring Jim Carrey as a realtor who inherits a half dozen penguins and finds his swank New York penthouse apartment turned into a raucous, chilly wonderland, is certainly not a subtle thing. But it is sweet, and has a heart, and it also benefits in comparison to many movies of its ilk by the use of actual real, live animals rather than talking critters or overly slick CGI creations. Based on the...

Super 8 (12A)
(Jj Abrams, 2011, Us) Riley Griffiths, Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler. 112 mins
With Steven Spielberg producing, neo-sci-fi superstar Jj Abrams harks back to the kid-friendly action fantasies of the 80s (Et, The Goonies) while adding a few modern monster-movie scares of his own. The two genres don't always sit well together, and the retro lens flare becomes wearing, but Super 8 has character and charm, especially in the three young leads, whose plans to make a super-8 zombie movie are scuppered by the arrival of a dangerous creature.
French Cancan (PG)
(Jean Renoir, 1954, Fr) Jean Gabin, Françoise Arnoul, Maria Félix. 104 mins
Digital restoration of Renoir's salute to the swinging, sensual Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec et al. Gabin stars as the ambitious entrepreneur whose plan to spice up his new nightclub, the Moulin Rouge, with dancing girls creates a new star, a new craze and a love triangle.

Penguins prove pivotal for a part-time pop.
Jim Carrey's latest is a perfectly pleasant if predictable picture about a part-time pop who learns his priorites after receiving a package of penguins. Putting alliterative plosives to one side - and one of the film's characters, Pippi (the wonderfully named Ophelia Lovibond) speaks that way throughout - there's plenty here to keep your precious poppets entertained even if Mark Waters' film never attempts to break new ground.

Jim Carrey’s slapstick performance as penguin owner Tom Popper in director Mark Waters’s adaptation of the classic children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins got the press and preview audiences all excited about seeing more of his trademark slapstick. Carrey teased those hopes with talk about sequels to two of his fans’ favorite comedies. “We’re talking about maybe returning to some old characters that everyone has been asking about,” Carrey told Coming Soon. “There’s Bruce Almighty and we’re talking about maybe another Dumb and Dumber.” Carrey neglected to mention a few projects that have been simmering for some time like playing explorer Robert Ripley in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! as well as a new version of Popeye.

Synopsis: An adaptation of the beloved 1938 children’s book, which won the 1939 Newbery Award. Before he knows it, the painter has a litter of 12 beaked birds. They eat voraciously, leading him to form Popper’s Performing Penguins.
From what we can see, it’s released in the UK 1st August.

Totally not how I saw this moving turning out but Jim Carrey is back playing the down and out character who has zany moments and other things going on amidst a heartwarming story with a message. This new comedy is called Mr. Popper’s Penguins and the first trailer has arrived for the upcoming comedy which will hit theaters across the country on June 17. The film is based on the popular book by written by Richard & Florence Atwater, originally published in 1938.
Adventure-loving house painter Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) contends with the problem of having too many penguins in director Mark Waters’ adaptation of author Richard Atwater’s beloved children’s book. Shortly after penning a letter to a team of Arctic explorers, Mr. Popper is surprised to receive a penguin in the mail. Later, after making his mischievous new pal a cozy new home in the freezer, the hapless Mr.

Fandango has premiered our first look at Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey. Based off of the children’s book of the same name and directed by Mark Waters, it also stars Carla Gugino, Philip Baker Hall, Dominic Chianese and Angela Lansbury.
The film tells the story of a wealthy New York businessman, who upon inheriting six penguins, decides to change his apartment to suit their needs. It may change his life for the better, but conflict gets in the way!
In all seriousness, this looks pretty terrible, and I can’t say I’m likely to ever see this. It’s a shame, because the cast itself isn’t that bad. The problem arises when you think about how they’re all just so far above this material (even Carrey). To think, this was almost directed by Noah Baumbach. But, if you so wish, you can see the...

Was Brendan Fraser too busy for this? 90′s rubber faced phenomenon (I’ve always wanted to write a line like that!) Jim Carrey has tried desperately to stay relevant since the turn of the century in straight roles and more grown up black comedic fare such as I Love You Philip Morris, but on this evidence it looks like he’s trying to claw back some of that old magic, only the face isn’t as flexible as it once was.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins is loosely based on a classic 1938 children’s novel that concerns the life of a businessman who inherits six penguins, transforming his apartment into a winter wonderland but his work life suffers. As it would.

Louis Leterrier is confirmed to direct 'Now You See Me,' a bank heist film about a group of illusionists who rob banks as part of their performance art.
'Harry Potter' scribe Steve Kloves has been hired by Warner Bros. to touch up their Hughes'= Brothers-directed live-action remake of 'Akira.'
'The King's Speech' screenwriter David Seidler may reteam with director Tom Hooper and producer Gareth Unwin for 'The Lady Who Went Too Far,' a biopic about "female Lawrence of Arabia," Lady Hester Stanhope. [via the Playlist]
It's less than two years old, but the Korean film 'Castaway on the Moon' is already set to be remade in America. Mark Waters will direct a new screenplay by Michael Goldbach.

Mark Waters, a Hollywood director of tolerable if, broadly speaking, unimaginative romantic and teen comedies has been announced as the director of a movie set to ponder one of the ultimate “what if?” questions of popular culture. The question being, “what if John Lennon had not gone out with Yoko Ono?”
The films premise is simple, if not a little silly: two Beatles fans travel back in time to prevent John Lennon from meeting Yoko so that she would not- as conventional wisdom dictates- have broken up the greatest band in the history of popular music.
Of course, for anyone that cares to spend two minutes researching the complexities that have since emerged, the presence of Ono around Lennon much of the time was relatively incidental to various arguments concerning business and recording at the time, unhelped by drug fuelled paranoia. Nevertheless, Yoko Ono has become a byword for the...

Despite being the most critically and financially successful group in music history, The Beatles haven’t had many films made about them. Sure, during the 60’s there were films about them that came out, often starring the members themselves, but after their breakup, essentially no biopics haven’t been done about their time together. And now this story shows that that unfortunate trend will only continue, as Variety (via Collider) tells us that we can expect a time-traveling comedy featuring the Fab Four, titled Get Back.
The film, scripted by Chris McCoy, follows two Beatles fans who discover a time machine, which they decide to use to travel back in time to stop Yoko Ono from forming a relationship with John Lennon. As they seem to be fans with limited knowledge of the band’s history, they see this as the reason that they broke up, hence their desire to stop it from happening.

As long as I can remember writing for JoBlo.com, I can remember writing about Bob: The Musical, a film that has gone through various forms of development at Disney. I don't remember when the project first got started but I'd suspect it was about 2001 sometime. Since then it has gone through the directorial services of Mark Waters, Mike Bender and most recently Adam Shankman, who left the film to pitch his services to Disney's Oz project (a job that Sam Raimi wound up getting). But now it...

To succeed as an actor, you need to run your career as a business, and a new website, YourActorMBA.com, aims to teach actors how—through an 11-week Web series."It's becoming more and more important that actors know about the business side of things to get a leg up and to show off their craft," said casting director Bonnie Gillespie, who co-created the program with actor Mitchell Fink and casting director Marci Liroff. All three host each episode; the first, "Auditioning for Film," was posted Sept. 22. Each episode features industry guests—working actors, directors, writers, casting directors, producers, and agents—who talk about their experiences. The lineup so far includes director Mark Waters, actor Anna Vocino, agent Louise Ward, and actor-producer Mark Gantt."Never before has anybody pulled these many professionals together and gotten them in an involved setting, shot with multiple cameras, in a teaching format," said Fink.

Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer,...
