Exclusive: Production is underway on Cardinal Releasing the documentary Link Wray about the influential American musician.
Fred Lincoln “Link” Wray Jr, the guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s, most notably with the hit 1958 instrumental “Rumble,” was an influence on artists including Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. He began in country music but went on to be known for rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly and instrumental rock. Growing up in North Carolina, he and his family experienced discrimination as a result of being Indigenous.
Dressed in black leather, Wray was viewed as a rebel and an early punk. Rolling Stone placed the late musician at No. 45 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and 2017.

“If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry,’” John Lennon proclaimed on The Mike Douglas Show in 1972. “In the 1950s, a whole generation worshipped his music, and when you see him today, past and present all come together, and the message is Hail, Hail Rock and Roll.’” The two idols then kicked off into Berry’s song “Memphis, Tennessee.” Chuck Berry: The Original King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll is the first-ever feature-length documentary on the duck-walking electric guitarist and songwriter. It’s been playing, like any good rock and roll film, at special drive-in events across the country. The film will be available on VOD platforms and on Blu-ray on November 27.

In factual, the British royals are red hot ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May wedding, and many of the big documentary titles for MipTV have a regal air.
For buyers looking to make a royal appointment, Fngcd has “Meghan Markle: An American Princess,” made for the Fox network. U.K.-based Drive has one-off “Invitation to a Royal Wedding,” which will be on ITV in the U.K.
Fusing royalty and natural history, Cineflix Rights will launch “The Queen’s Green Planet,” the one-off that built around a conversation between the British monarch and naturalist David Attenborough about a shared love of nature, and a project to create a network of protected forests.
It’s not just royals, there are some rough and tough American pioneers in town too. Stephen David Entertainment, which specializes in factual that plays similar to drama, made “The Men Who Built America: Frontiersmen,...

Roughly three years before David Bowie died, the man who sold the world sat down with a recorder to capture his memories of Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson on tape. He was urged to do so at the behest of Mick's widow Suzi Ronson, Bowie's former hairdresser and the creator of his legendary Ziggy Stardust orange space mullet. Mick had been dead for two decades at that point, but few people outside of hardcore Bowie aficionados were aware of his axeman's massive contributions to popular music – and she wanted to alleviate that.

Putting forward the idea that David Bowie (born David Robert Jones) wouldn't have been David Bowie without the help of his most celebrated sideman, Jon Brewer's Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story views the lauded guitarist mostly through the lens of the Spiders from Mars. Incomplete but benefiting from warm interviews with Ronson's loved ones, the doc gives some idea of his greatness but is better at depicting him as a likeable, modest bloke — one who just happened to be the best thing that happened to Bowie. Though it will be welcomed by hardcore rock nerds on video, theatrical prospects...

As I'm sure you've all heard by now, blues legend B.B. King passed away last night, at age 89. His daughter, Patty King, said he died in Las Vegas, where, 2 weeks ago, he announced that he was in home hospice care after suffering from dehydration. Cinematically, his life was the subject of the 2012 feature-length documentary "B.B. King: The Life of Riley" (he was born Riley B. King). Jon Brewer, the film's director, who worked closely with King, had this to say in an interview with Guitarist magazine: "It was an absolute privilege to be asked to make this film – it’s B.B. King’s life... One aspect tops all others. There’s this little boy who loved going to...

Exclusive Trailer: Opening Scene for Blues Doc 'B.B. King: The Life of Riley' is 'All About Feeling'
"It's all about feeling. You can play a thousand notes a minute and it goes straight across the board and there is no feeling, it doesn't mean anything." Narrated by Morgan Freeman, "B.B. King: The Life of Riley" examines the life of blues guitar legend through a sophisticated combination of archive footage and high-profile interviews. Familiar faces include Buddy Guy, one of King's own contemporaries, as well as Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Bono. Director Jon Brewer's background as a manager for David Bowie and The Rolling Stones -- two musical acts profoundly influenced by the blues -- contributes to the film's credibility as a measure of cultural impact. As the opening scene seems to suggest, the film does not aspire to objectivity. In fact, the sentimentality expressed for King and his legacy is key to what makes the blues, the blues. Check out the B.B. King...
