The Conservative Political Action Committee has returned to D.C. this week for its annual conference, and it’s serving up heaping platters of lazy, hateful political commentary to conservative voters.

Hollywood is mourning the death of Suzanne Somers, who became a household name with her role in Three’s Company and later went on to star in Step by Step and She’s the Sheriff.
Somers died Sunday at age 76 at her home in Palm Springs after a battle with cancer, her longtime publicist R. Couri Hay said in a statement.
“She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family,” the statement read. “Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on Oct. 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”

Twitter has stopped enforcing its Covid misinformation policy, designed to prevent the spread of harmful false narratives about the pandemic. This has increased simmering concerns that the platform, already an echo chamber for many users, could become a misinformation super-spreader. Users are already testing the waters to see what kind of false statements they can knowingly publish. “Covid was created in a lab by the Chinese with the assistance of Dr. Fauci,” one user tweeted Tuesday, quickly garnering 5,000 likes. “Ivermectin works!!! Go figure,” posted another user, who got 11.9 thousand likes.

Donald Trump did draw the media spotlight for his presidential announcement speech on Tuesday, but the networks varied in how they approached the event, carrying parts of it and cutting away at others.
The coverage perhaps offers a glimpse of how Trump will be covered as he embarks on his third presidential bid — certainly a top story, but not the only one.
Trump promoted the speech as “one of the most important ones in the history of our country,” but the networks alternated their focus on other stories throughout the day. That included the missile hit on Poland that, just minutes before Trump took the stage, put the focus on his nemesis, President Joe Biden.
CNN carried the speech from Mar-a-Lago for more than 20 minutes before cutting away when Trump made the official announcement. Anderson Cooper then went to a fact check with Daniel Dale, a fixture during the 2020 election cycle.

Donald Trump said from behind a podium at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday that he’s launching a campaign to take back the White House in 2024. It wasn’t exactly a rousing announcement. The former president seemed bored as he squinted at his teleprompter and regurgitated well-trod talking points about immigration, crime, the economy, and more, mixing in several rambling tangents.
The speech was so dull that even Sean Hannity cut away from it.

Thursday, June 30, at 5 p.m. Et, Glenn Beck introduced the final Fox News Channel broadcast of "The Glenn Beck Show," which premiered on Jan. 19, 2009.
Begun on the street outside Beck's current ground-floor studio in midtown Manhattan -- with burly security guards visible around the host -- the last hurrah was 42 minutes (not counting commercials) of remembrances and commentary, delivered straight to the camera in Beck's signature, highly personal style.
It was also live, which Beck remarked would seem very odd if he was indeed "fired" from his show.
No doubt there will be jubilation in many quarters, but most likely from folks who are not regular "Beck" viewers -- of which there are still nearly 2 million a day.
If those numbers had not represented a decline from the nearly three million a day the show once drew, it would still be considered very successful in a time slot when many...

News broke today that the White House had told Gop leadership that it would not defend in a court of law the Defense of Marriage Act signed under President Clinton. The federal law defines marriage between a man and a woman, and had previously been defended by the Justice Department under previous administrations. This was the topic of conversation today on Fox News, and guest Monica Crowley told host Megyn Kelly that this decision was akin to a "dictatorship" calling the president "Mubarak Obama."...

Every Tuesday night on The O'Reilly Factor, political commentators Alan Colmes and Monica Crowley debate one another in an always entertaining "Barack and a Hard Place" segment. Given that the two are related (Colmes is married to Crowley's sister) and both can play along with host Bill O'Reilly, this segment often seems like a fun family dinner where the participants don't have to hold back and can say absolutely anything they want, because when the gloves come off, they all really like each other.

Television producers take note: the element of surprise is your greatest ally in creating compelling television. Case in point: Conservative commentator Monica Crowley predictably took the position that the real culprit in North Korea's recent rogue behavior was a "weak" President Obama. Enter America Live host Megyn Kelly, bringing the pain to her guest's rather obviously and overly political opinion, with sharply punctuated and exasperated "What?!"...

The music of the right wing has always been pretty bad, Ted Nugent, Britney Spears, Brooks & Dunn. There are probably some exceptions, but I can't think of them and/or they have not admitted their political positions. Either way, the right wing roster is overall piss poor. It's not exactly fair though -- there's something about the open, creative mind that leans overwhelmingly liberal. I think it has to do with one's capacity for empathy for other human beings, but I digress.
Along comes a new brand of right wing musician, the Tea Party performer. Wnyc did a story on some emergent acts, gaining popularity by performing at Tea Party rallies, who are encroaching on what is a historically left wing past time: protest songs. For example, Chris Cassone, is a 60 year old "right-wing Woody Guthrie" inspired to pick up his guitar and sing to his TV while watching Bat Shit Glen Beck.

Days after the White House responded to critics who tried to cast President Obama's remark that Republicans "have to ride in the back" as a reference to Civil Rights-era segregation, the right continues to grasp at straws like a soda jerk having a heart attack. Fox News' Megyn Kelly and guest Monica Crowley chewed over Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' explanation of the remark Wednesday, which included a reference to Kelly. After the jump, check out the clip, and Robert Gibbs' exclusive reaction to it.

This week's issue of Rolling Stone magazine features an interview with Barack Obama, in which the president says that Fox News has "a point of view that I disagree with," continuing "It’s a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country." Bill O'Reilly addressed this issue in his "Barack and a Hard Place" segment with Monica Crowley and Alan Colmes last night, and was surprisingly tolerant and understanding of Obama's frustration with Fox News.

Last night the O'Reilly Factor picked up the Hillary Clinton for President drumbeat. In a 'Talking Points Commentary' Monica Crowley highlighted a list of ways Hillary could feasibly make a run for the Oval Office in 2012. Crowley thinks that among other things Hillary knows that the nation is suffering from "buyer's remorse" when it comes to President Obama and will "want to make it up to her."...

Jeb Bush -- who was always derisively referred to as the smartest of the Bush brothers -- seemed presidential at the state Republican convention at the Sheraton New York on Wednesday night. After Fox News pundit Monica Crowley fired up the crowd and Mayor Bloomberg drew surprisingly enthusiastic applause considering he left the Gop, Jeb spoke and brought down the house, leading to speculation that the former Florida governor will run for president. Overhead from a top GOPer: "After this Obama nightmare, the Bush brand is looking pretty good." The Republicans...
