- Graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in broadcast journalism in 1982. The University of Florida gave her an Outstanding Achievement Award in 1997. She served on the University's Journalism College Advisory Board (1993-1997) and was chairman in 1996. Returned to the University as a key-note speaker at the College of Journalism and Communications in 2010.

- Daughter and sister of physicians. Her father is a retired orthopedic surgeon. Her brother is a physician who is trained in emergency medicine, family medicine and the specialty of anesthesia.
