“Oppenheimer” grabbed two out of three prizes at the Motion Picture Sound Editor’s 71st Golden Reel Awards on March 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Christopher Nolan’s explosive Oscar favorite won Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley, while Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” snagged Music Editing. Both films were led by supervising sound editor Richard King.
After also taking the top sound mixing prize this weekend at the 60th Cas Awards, “Oppenheimer” is now in the Oscar driver’s seat against the other sound nominees: “The Zone of Interest.” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “The Creator.”
The other Golden Reel film winners went to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for animated feature, “32 Sounds” for documentary, and “Society of the Snow” for foreign language. The Motion Picture Sound Editors learned to stop worrying and love the bomb this year. That’s the takeaway from the organization’s nominees for their 71st annual Golden Reel Awards, which sees Christopher Nolan’s nuclear blockbuster smash “Oppenheimer” decidedly lead the pack.

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.

This review of “The Northman” was first published on April 11, 2022.
Sharpen the swords and prepare the funeral pyres: A Viking is out for bloody revenge in “The Northman,” and the corpses keep piling higher and higher in this trippy action epic from director and co-writer Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse”).
Written in collaboration with Icelandic author Sjón, “The Northman” is gory, muddy, hallucinatory — and intensely entertaining. An examination of the way that violence begets violence, and a study of how a life devoted to single-minded hatred and vengeance can lead to uncomfortable truths, this is a movie that lives up to every saga comic books and metal bands ever spun about the brutal conquerors of yore.
We open on young Prince Amieth running to tell his mother Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman) of the return of King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), whose arrival is celebrated with a feast that includes japery from court...

A young couple ponders life’s biggest questions of vows, adulthood, love and … “would you ever consider an open thing?” Check out the exclusive trailer debut for the charming romantic comedy “Mark, Mary & Some Other People” above.
Hayley Law and Ben Rosenfield play the titular characters who reconnect after college. The duo begins dating and winds up swiftly falling in love and getting hitched (according to the trailer and by “Eastbound & Down’s” Steve Little no less!). As their whirlwind love story moves forward Mary suggests the possibility of exploring ethical non-monogamy. The decision changes things for the couple and opens a lot of personal questions for both as Mary starts to realize she’s more traditional than she thought whereas Mark starts to open up and see the world differently through Mary and a polyamorous lens.
Written and directed by Hannah Marks, the director was excited to film in her hometown.

“Mark, Mary & Some Other People” opens with one of the strangest meet cutes in recent memory: Slacker dog-walker Mark (Ben Rosenfield) and brash singer Mary (Hayley Law) reconnect for the first time since college at a convenience store, where the former joins the latter in the bathroom — eventually singing loudly and crazily to boot — while she takes a pregnancy test. That introduction is emblematic of the jaunty weirdness of Hannah Marks’ romantic comedy, which concerns its protagonists’ ensuing decision to attempt an open relationship. Embellishing stock formula with plenty of personality, it’s

Wendi McLendon-Covey’s bored wife Cathy endures a series of seriocomic crises but they never really lead anywhere
As the lead turn in this burb-midlife crisis dramedy, Wendi McLendon-Covey repeatedly does a facial expression which can best be called stunned-discontentment-and-incredulity. It is, if nothing else, appropriate for the very eventful script from writer-director Debra Eisenstadt, that packs in loads of ideas and situations, and brings us to a series of contrived seriocomic crises, after which the dramatic temperature is reset to normal in the succeeding scene. At one stage McLendon-Covey’s character gets hit by a car, and simply limps away with the same satirically grumpy face and a bruise to show for it. It’s not totally clear if the surreal effect is intentional.

"He is not allowed in this house!" Gravitas Ventures has debuted the official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Blush, which is the new name for the film that premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival under the original title Imaginary Order. From writer/director Debra Eisenstadt, this is the story of the sexual, psychological, and moral unraveling of an obsessive-compulsive suburban mom. Comedian/actress Wendi McLendon-Covey stars as Cathy, a mother and wife who has given up her career to be the perfect stay-at-home mom, but as her daughter begins to push her away and her husband seems to no longer connect with her, she becomes enthralled and involved with the messy lives of a neighboring family, causing the order in her life to collapse. Also starring Christine Woods, Max Burkholder, Steve Little, Catherine Curtin, Kate Alberts, and Graham Sibley. This all seems a bit too obvious and cliche to stand out.

In the Season 3 finale of “Room 104,” the motel room that has housed three dozen different self-contained stories does something it certainly hasn’t done before: It sprouts into a rainforest.
Even if you haven’t seen the episode yet, “Room 104” executive producer Sydney Fleischmann is Ok with you still knowing about it.
“Our initial reaction with a lot of things is, ‘Oh my God, that’s a spoiler! That’s gonna give away everything!’ And then we sort of talk ourselves down and remember no one has any sense of anything that happens in the room. It’s all going to be fresh and weird and new,” Fleischmann told IndieWire. “And so showing the room as a jungle is not, it’s not a spoiler, it’s really alluring and it’s weird. I think the fun part is that it’s much more than ‘the room is filled with green.

Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life revival is now landing on Netflix with a set release date.

The film picks up where the original series left off (Rocko and his friends mistakenly blasted off into space). Rocko's ran from 1993-1996 with 52 episodes over four seasons. Plenty of films great and small have gone spelunking in the quiet desperation of middle-class suburban motherhood, but few have plumbed the milieu with more consistently uncomfortable results than writer-director Debra Eisenstadt’s “Imaginary Order.” Abrasive and often bleakly funny, the film is anchored by an unrestrained lead performance from Wendi McLendon-Covey as a Type A PTA mom who engineers her own absurd downfall, one well-intentioned decision at a time. Admirably acted and powered by a loopy internal rhythm, the film nonetheless wears out its welcome long before it’s done inflicting indignities on its heroine, arriving at its main point early and then repeating it again and again.
Cathy (McLendon-Covey) is a stay-at-home mom whose loneliness and sublimated regret at giving up her career are obvious from virtually the first frame. After quick-cut montages of her arduous morning ablutions set to Chopin sonatas, we watch Cathy as she helicopter-parents...

The TV academy is to be applauded for embracing new technology with the introduction of Emmy Awards for the likes of Best Original Interactive Program. One of the most innovative contenders in that category this year is the Hulu live-action Vr comedy series, “Door No. 1.”
Nora Kirkpatrick, who was a standout on season 9 of “The Office” as Dwight’s would-be girlfriend, goes behind the camera as both writer and director of this breakthrough program. The immersive experience is shown in a full 360 degrees and allows the viewer to pick and choose at key points in the story.

Hulu publicly unveiled the trailer and a behind-the-scenes video for its new virtual reality (Vr) comedy “Door No. 1” Friday. The comedy, which was written and directed by Nora Kirkpatrick of “The Office” fame and produced by AOL’s Ryot exclusively for Hulu, is set to debut on the service on May 24.
Door No. 1 is a kind of live-action multiple choice comedy adventure about a ten-year high school reunion. The show puts the viewer into the middle of the action by making her or him a protagonist of the show: Alex, one of the former students attending the reunion.
Alex doesn’t talk throughout the show, but can decide to take multiple paths through the story, and make many bad decisions along the way — it’s a high school reunion, after all.

2017-12-04T07:40:23-08:00Netflix Cancels 'Haters Back Off'
Just a year or so ago, it was virtually unheard of for a Netflix original series to get cancelled. Now, although it's still nearly a given that every new series will get a second season, it's getting harder for series to hold through three or more seasons. The latest casualty is Haters Back Off, the comedy series based on a YouTube channel that failed to draw much of an audience on the streaming service. Haters was picked up for a second season last year, but Netflix will not be producing a third.

Created by star Colleen Ballinger, with Chris Ballinger, the Netflix TV series spun off of the popular YouTube character, Miranda Sings. Angela Kinsey, Francesca Reale, Erik Stocklin, and Steve Little also star. A surreal scripted comedy, Haters Back Off! centers on, "...the oddball family life of Miranda Sings." Netflix describes the character as, "...an incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise who continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous, it's just no one knows it yet." Chaz Lamar Shepherd, Dylan Playfair, Harvey Guillen, Lindsay Navarro, Rachelle Gillis, Mel Tuck, Simon Longmore, and Kara Hayward recur. Guest stars include Ben Stiller, John Early, C. Maybe the haters were right after all: Netflix has cancelled the comedy Haters Back Off! after two seasons, our sister site Deadline is reporting.
RelatedCable/Streaming Scorecard: What’s Renewed? What’s Cancelled?
Based on Colleen Ballinger’s YouTube videos, Haters Back Off! starred Ballinger as the hopelessly deluded Miranda Sings, a young performer with no discernible talent who nonetheless dreams of superstardom. The Office alum Angela Kinsey co-starred as Miranda’s mother Bethany, with Eastbound & Down‘s Steve Little playing Miranda’s uncle Jim. Comedian Matt Besser (Fresh Off the Boat, Parks and Recreation) joined the cast in Season 2 as Miranda’s estranged dad.

The school bell at North Jackson High rang for the last time Sunday as Vice Principals‘ brief-by-design two-season run came to a violent, bloody, riotous conclusion on HBO.
To quickly recap: After being unmasked as Gamby’s (co-creator/star Danny McBride) shooter, Ms. Abbott (the uproariously warped Edi Patterson) went on a gun-toting, fists-flying rampage, wounding both Russell (Walton Goggins) and Snodgrass (Georgia King) before letting loose an actual tiger on school grounds. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which is your favorite scripted TV show about sports? Old and current shows are fair game.

I was a big fan of the Freeform show “Make It or Break It,” about the lives of a group of elite gymnasts working toward their dream of competing in the Olympics. Even typing that sentence, I know how hokey it sounds, and yes, it touched on all the clichés about women’s gymnastics – eating disorders, overburdened parents, inappropriate relationships with coaches – but you know what, all those things bubble up in the real sport with depressing regularity.

Miranda Sings -- the zany and lovable character created by YouTube luminary Colleen Ballinger -- is set to return to Netflix for a second season of the hit scripted comedy Haters Back Off, which bows on Oct. 20.
The end of Haters Back Off season one saw Miranda’s real life in shambles as she rose to viral renown on YouTube. In season two, Miranda has her sights set firmly on making it on Broadway -- with a little help from her comparably quirky cadre of friends and family. Steve Little (Eastbound & Down) returns as Miranda’s crackpot Uncle Jim, while Angela Kinsey (The Office) plays Miranda's mother Bethany.

"Meet Os. A Straight Up Ghost Assassin." William Fichtner as Youston, Conrad Vernon as Dave, Steve Little as The Melon, David Nicolas as Dr. Finger, and Lola Delon as Clara Finger. I watched this trailer fifteen minutes ago and I'm still unsure if it's really bad or really good. I think it's bad in the sense that it made me ridiculously uncomfortable, but I'm assuming that's what makes it good? Haters Back Off seems to take the SNL skit Superstar and revamp it for a new generation. You have a painfully unaware weird girl (Colleen Ballinger) who looks to be famous with the help of her uncle (Steve Little) via viral videos. We also see her mother (Angela Kinsey) who seems to be aware that her daughter is a little out there. Will she find fame? Probably.
I still can't get over how this trailer made me feel. I wanted to crawl out of my skin I felt so weird! Then again, that's how a bulk of YouTube personalities act, so once again I'm conflicted. The show premieres on October 14th.
