Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed director of films such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune, has expressed his strong support for IMAX and other large formats as the future of cinema. In a recent interview with the Associated Press1, Villeneuve said that he was impressed by the box office success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which was filmed and released exclusively in IMAX and 70mm film. Villeneuve said that he always expected Oppenheimer to be a financial hit, but it exceeded his expectations by becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2023.
Villeneuve attributed the popularity of Oppenheimer to its use of large formats, which he said offer a unique and immersive experience that cannot be replicated at home or on streaming platforms. He said that the audience wants to see something that they cannot have at home, that they cannot have on streaming. They want to experience an event. He...

After the release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two got pushed to March 15, 2024, fans of Frank Herbert’s spice-infused sci-fi series have been eager for more details about the upcoming sequel. While I don’t have any fresh information about the sequel’s release, fascinating factoids about David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation are making the rounds. In a lengthy article published by Wired, the outlet returns to 1984 for the turbulent Dune promotional tour and all the hostile vibes that come with it.
With a significant rollout planned for Lynch’s version, Dune booked 1,700 screens worldwide and four gala premieres in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Miami, and London. According to Wired, the December 4 DC premiere resulted in Dune author Frank Herbert and David Lynch getting invited to the White House for dinner with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. The presidential couple told Herbert they enjoyed the film, though...

In Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel, the character Duke Leto Atreides is set up to fail. Awarded the mining rights to the arid planet Arrakis by a powerful emperor, and given a limited number of days to exploit them, Leto is sent to the desert essentially to die. And in the end, he should’ve known forces beyond his control were conspiring against him from the start.
One wonders whether back in 1984 if David Lynch felt he could relate. An already impressive directorial talent behind intriguing films like Eraserhead (1977) and The Elephant Man (1980), Lynch was a 34-year-old wunderkind when he was tapped by producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct, and eventually rewrite, Dune as a sci-fi epic intended to rival Star Wars. Yet through the vicissitudes of fate—as well as budget, location photography, and post-production studio mandates—the film that reached cinema screens was a fraction of his sprawling vision.

Coming along twenty-three years after the release of the original Chicken Run, the sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will be released through the Netflix streaming service on December 15th – and even though that date is still six months away, Aardman Animations founder Peter Lord, producer Layla Herbert, and director Sam Fell shared some footage from the film at the Annecy International Film Festival.
As described by Deadline, the footage shown featured the utopian island chicken haven – described by Fell as a sort of “Chicken Wakanda” – created by heroine Ginger after she led the breakout from the Tweedy farm in late 1940s Britain (in the first movie). It’s now the early ’60s and Ginger is the mother with Rocky of rebellious teenager Molly. Ginger in the meantime has buried her rebel side, devoting herself instead to keeping the peace in her island idyll. The arrival of the fortress-like...

Exclusive: Netflix and Aggregate prevailed in a bidding war to secure rights to writer David Gauvey Herbert’s 2021 Esquire magazine article “Daddy Ball.” They will find a new title, but the source material will be developed as an eight-episode limited series that Ozark‘s Jason Bateman will both star in and direct. Bateman, Michael Costigan and Roxie Rodriguez will be co-executive producers for Aggregate. David Herbert and David Klawans will also EP the dark comedy limited series.
There were eight offers on the table, but Netflix won it in an outright buy for an undisclosed number commensurate with the demand. It will be developed on a fast track.
The article starts the way most dad-on-dad youth-sports rivalries do. But on the Long Island Inferno, two fathers, both with complicated pasts, took it all too far. There were claims of stalking, corrupt cops and mob connections. Neither man was ever the same.
