Late during an autumn night in 1954, Marilyn Monroe stood above a New York City subway grate at the corner of Lexington and 52nd. As a train passed beneath her feet, and a gust of air rushed ever upward, a smile erupted across her face. Cinematic history was made. The sequence in question was filmed for The Seven Year Itch, Billy Wilder’s exceedingly ‘50s romantic comedy. But while that movie’s antiquated plot has long since faded from memory, the vision of Monroe in the white dress never did.
For many it is the encapsulation of Monroe’s mystique: an innocent (some might even say infantilized) beauty whose sweetness belies blonde bombshell sex appeal. It was a manufactured image, of course, synthesized right down to the platinum hue of Monroe’s hair. In reality, she was a dirty blonde born to the name of Norma Jeane Mortenson. Marilyn was also...

It’s ironic that Andrew Dominik, director of the latest Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” wonders if anyone still watches Marilyn Monroe movies. I’d say the many Monroe biopics that exist, whether directly retelling the events of her life or loosely inspired by them like his own, says otherwise. It’s even more frustrating to look at the landscape of Marilyn portrayals onscreen and realize only two have been directed by women; and just one has been written and directed by a woman. It is that same movie, also based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, that seems to have a better awareness of Marilyn and her movies.
CBS aired the two-part miniseries “Blonde,” directed by Joyce Chopra and written by Joyce Eliason, in 2001. The TV movie tells the familiar story of Norma Jean Baker, aka Marilyn Monroe (played by Poppy Montgomery), as she navigates a tortured upbringing with a mentally ill mother,...

Casey lives with her mother, a recovering addict, in a little-known Midwestern town haunted by the promise of modernism. Jin, a visitor from the other side of the world, attends to his estranged, dying father. Burdened by the future, they find respite in one another and the architecture that surrounds them. Filmed on location in Columbus, Indiana, this tender meditation on love, loss and architecture is the directorial feature debut for writer/director Kogonada.
Kogonada’s Columbus is cross between the thematic threads of family showcased in the works of Japanese auteur Yasujirō Ozu and structure of place and setting reminiscent of both Stanley Kubrick and Derek Jarman.

"Suddenly the place I'd lived my whole life felt different." A trailer has finally arrived for one of the best films from the Sundance Film Festival this year. Columbus is the feature directorial debut of a filmmaker known as "Kogonada", a Korean cinephile who previously made video essays that achieved quite a bit of acclaim online. Columbus stars Haley Lu Richardson as a young woman from the town of Columbus, Indiana, a small place known for its remarkable and innovative architecture (and it's all actually real). Her story intertwines with a Korean man played by John Cho who visits because his father, an architect, is in a coma. The cast also includes Parker Posey, Erin Allegretti, Rory Culkin, and Jim Dougherty. We published a glowing review of this from Sundance, and it's definitely worth your time to discover. See below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Kogonada's Columbus,...

Creativity makes up for a lot. Particularly, within filmmaking, creativity makes up for a lack of money. My favorite independent, low budget/no budget films, are ones that use creativity to the best of their ability. When cast, and crew take every chance they're given to make the most out of the little they have to work with. This is where “Three Tears” shines the strongest.
Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh tells the story of Dominic Merrick, who comes back to his hometown, with his troubled daughter, after his niece is murdered. There is clearly foul play afoot, but the locals act as if nothing is wrong. Now Dominic must work to uncover the truth that plagues this quaint town, and it's inhabitants. The only real question,...

Attacked and beaten by a hooded assailant after seeing her gynaecologist, pregnant Esther seeks consolation in a support group where she meets Melanie, a mother who lost a child. But nothing is as it appears in Proxy, because one of these damaged women is a psychodrama queen, the other seriously deranged. However, which one is which and where to draw the line?
And that’s the central, rather twisted premise of a film which actually reminded me a lot of the Frightfest 2012 film Crawl, in so much as it which builds situation upon situation, ever increasing the sense of dread until pervades every inch of the film – so much so that even the moments of quietness feel too quiet and you end up expecting something...

Chicago – By the age of 15, actress Hanna Hall had delivered iconic lines in two of the most acclaimed films of the ’90s. After famously yelling, “Run, Forrest, run!” in Robert Zemeckis’s Oscar-winner, “Forrest Gump,” Hall nailed the unforgettable line, “Obviously, doctor, you’ve never been a 13-year-old girl,” in Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut, “The Virgin Suicides.”
Since then, Hall has tackled a wide variety of audacious roles in both mainstream releases, such as Rob Zombie’s 2007 “Halloween” remake, and independent productions including Adam Sherman’s edgy 2010 drama, “Happiness Runs.” In her latest film, “Scalene,” Hall plays Paige, a compassionate college student who signs up to care for a mentally handicapped man, Jakob (Adam Scarimbolo). When she suspects that Jakob is being abused by his mother, Janice (Margo Martindale), Paige attempts to “save” him by devising a plan that could potentially result in her own doom. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures. Director: Zack Parker. Writers: Brandon Owens, and Zack Parker. Cast: Margo Martindale, Hanna Hall, Adam Scarimbolo, Jim Dougherty, Ladonna Pettijohn, Raymond Kester, Angela Steele, Sean Blodgett, Frank T. Ziede, Mark A. Nash, and Eric Monroe. Tagline: "The truth is just a point of view." Scalene is an exceptional film built around three characters' perspectives. Each has their own truth in relation to certain tragic events. Zack Parker's third film also sets up those tragic events with a reverse narrative. The film's story begins from a certain violent point and then works its way backwards through each characters' eyes. This storytelling style is effective and Scalene will hopefully find a large audience when it releases later this month. A scalene triangle has three unequal sides. The perspectives in the film are also unequal. Jakob's (Adam Scarimbolo) perspective is the.

The Film:
When watching a movie to review, there are two different types of films to keep your eyes open for. The first is the studio picture, while the second is the independent film. Within both of those, you have different levels from big budget blockbusters to moderately budgeted films on the studio side, and high budget to do-it-yourself films on the independent side. When looking at the do-it-yourself movies, a reviewer is looking for different things than they would from a big budget film. With do-it-yourself films, the budget is obviously small, and the talent might not be as good, the effects might not be as mind blowing and the locations are smaller. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie, but it should be looked at with a different mindset. Beverly Lane is a direct to DVD film from first time filmmaker Joshua Hull, lands on the...

Title: Scalene Director: Zack Parker Starring: Margo Martindale, Hanna Hall, Adam Scarimbolo, Jim Dougherty ‘Scalene’, a recent world premiere at the ongoing Dances With Films festival, opens with a jolt, in large part because one doesn’t expect to see Margo Martindale, a veteran character actress with more than 80 credits under her belt, doing physical battle with Hanna Hall, the young Jenny from ‘Forrest Gump’, and later costar of Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween’ remake. And yet there they are — one with a gun, the other in flight. They scuffle, yell and run about, giving clues of a greater familiarity with one another. Soon we’re winding backwards in time, and learning...

Back in November Dread Central told you about an innovative “Create Your Own Killer” contest being held by writer/director Joshua Hull (Beverly Lane) for his upcoming horror comedy Idiot Gore. Well, after sifting through the numerous submissions from the last month and a half, Hull has found his serial killer for the flick courtesy of horror fan Bob Bower of Palm Harbor, Florida.
The killer that slayed the competition? Sadie Grace.
Hull and Bower are playing this one close to the chest, horror fans, so the artwork for Sadie isn’t being released yet (the best way I’d describe her is that she reminds me of the kind of girl Pennywise would settle down with if he lived in a trailer park), but Hull did confirm he’s already secured the woman who’ll bring Sadie to life: none other than bigger-than-life actress Babette Bombshell (Not Another B Movie...

Horror fans, how many times have you been sitting in a theater watching yet another slasher flick and thought to yourself, “Wow, I totally could have come up with something better than that!”? Well, here’s your chance to be part of horror movie history.
Hot on the heels of completing Beverly Lane, writer/director Joshua Hull is already gearing up for his next feature, entitled Idiot Gore, and wants horror fans to have their hand in creating the killer. Hull describes Idiot Gore as a slasher comedy that is like Tropic Thunder meets Halloween.
The film follows a failing reality show host and his rag-tag crew, who get more than they bargained for when they agree to help a young "Laurie Strode" like character being pursued by a masked psychopath.
