Ultraman has one job: to defend the world from kaiju. Across countless manga, video games and movies, Ultraman’s core duty has been to fend off ferocious land and sea monsters — which, of course, have always been allegories for other threats facing mankind. In “Ultraman: Rising,” our hero adopts one, which makes no sense in the greater scheme of Ultraman lore. (It would be like Batman going soft and raising a supervillain’s abandoned lovechild or Superman deciding to open a gift shop specializing in kryptonite.) But as with all metaphors, this one isn’t really about kaiju, but parent-child dynamics. And who doesn’t love a baby kaiju?
Not to rain on writer-director Shannon Tindle’s parade, but the baby kaiju thing feels like a cheat. DreamWorks and other CG animation studios have been exploiting this tactic for years, introducing adorable infant versions of otherwise not-especially-cute characters. The character...

One of the most storied franchises in contemporary pop culture, Japan’s “Ultra Series” has generated 44 movies, nearly 100 video games, countless pages of manga, and an endless parade of TV shows since Tsuburaya Productions first created the character in 1966 as a kid-friendly way of capitalizing on the success of kaiju phenomena like “Godzilla.” With such an illustrious legacy to its name, it might come as a surprise that Shannon Tindle’s “Ultraman: Rising” — an animated feature set in Tokyo but created entirely in the West — doesn’t require its preteen audience to know any of that, nor does it bother to fill them in along the way.
Unfolding like a family-oriented cross between “Pacific Rim” and “Big Hero 6,” this eye-popping CGI adventure makes no mention of the fact that its titular superhero is canonically an alien, just as it makes no attempt to explain why baseball star Ken Sato...

Yasuke is the latest anime series from maverick creator LeSean Thomas. With the voice talents of Oscar-nominated Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry To Bother You), Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian), Darren Criss (Glee), and Keone Young (Men in Black 3) to name a few, plus a soundtrack by Grammy-nominated artist Flying Lotus, Yasuke is an imaginative fantasy world of mechs and demons, set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. The titular character of Yasuke is based on a real historical figure, the first known Black samurai who lived in the mid-sixteenth century.
Previously in 2019, Thomas delivered another well-regarded Netflix anime titled Cannon Busters. That was a crazy mashup of Wild West towns, transformer mechs, aliens, and droids. It’s just the sort of genre bending fare that only comics and anime can provide. Cannon Busters has a nod to samurai folklore too. There is a drunken ronin named 9ine who is connected to the legend of the 47 Ronin.

With the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” airing its finale on Thursday, Jan. 7, it is difficult to overstate what a significant milestone this season marked for representation across the franchise.
Case in point, the series introduced a romantic relationship between the first non-binary and transgender characters in the “Star Trek” universe, played respectively by a non-binary and a trans actor.
This recent spotlight on inclusive casting is part of an extended conversation that longtime fans like Phil Yu have been following over the years. To celebrate the steppingstones, Yu, who founded the “Angry Asian Man” blog centering on Asian American representation in Hollywood, launched a podcast in August, on which he hosts hour-long conversations with “All the Asians on ‘Star Trek.'”
While Yu half-jokingly titled his podcast, he tells Variety now that “the name points out that there are just enough [Asians] involved to make a podcast out of...

George Hearst might not be the worst villain ever played by actor Gerald McRaney, but he’s near the top of that list. The real-life wealthy miner and businessman character joined the series “Deadwood” for its third and final season 13 years ago as the main antagonist to the town. And now McRaney has returned for “Deadwood: The Movie” as a U.S. Senator still up to his murderous, devious ways.
For our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), McRaney claims that most villains don’t think they are evil. He says, “One of the most important things that separates drama from melodrama is that if you’re tasked with playing a villain, you can’t play him villianously. You have to find all the things that justify all the things he’s doing and concentrate on that. Eliminate all of the stuff that might look evil and play the actions.

Thirteen years after “Deadwood” ended abruptly on HBO, Timothy Olyphant returns with guns blazing as Seth Bullock, former sheriff and now a U.S. Marshal. The film version, titled “Deadwood: The Movie,” premieres on May 31 (just in time for 2019 Emmy contention) and picks ups in 1889 as the small western town celebrates entrance into the new 40th state of South Dakota. The two-hour project is written by the original show’s creator David Milch and directed by Daniel Minahan.
Spoilers Below For This Movie:
In our recent interview (watch the video above), Olyphant describes his return as the tough but mostly law-abiding lawman. He says, “David Milch is a genius. He’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being around. Not that I’ve spent too much time hanging out with geniuses, but my understanding is that not too many of them have had the life experiences that [he] has had.

Welcome back to Deadwood. HBO has dropped the trailer for the upcoming “Deadwood” reunion movie — just in time for the 15th anniversary of the David Milch-created series debut — and by the looks of things, Ian McShane’s Al Swearengen is coming back with a whole new mess of problems.
In the two-hour film — officially titled “Deadwood: The Movie” — the indelible characters of the show are reunited after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

Al Swearengen is f—in’ back. HBO released the first trailer for “Deadwood: The Movie” on Thursday, which was also the 15th anniversary of the series premiere of “Deadwood.”
The teaser (watch above) doesn’t give too much away from the film, which is scheduled to premiere Friday, May 31 at 8/7c, aka the final day of Emmy eligibility, but it’s so nice to see those faces and ‘staches again. Set in 1889, the film follows Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) & Co. as they reunite after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Needless to say, things don’t go too smoothly. Per HBO, “former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”
“You ever think, Bullock, of not going straight at a thing,” Al asks in the clip.
“No,” Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) deadpans.

As hotshot pilot Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono in Disney’s new animated series “Star Wars Resistance,” Christopher Sean is the first Asian-American actor to be the lead in the “Star Wars” universe. It’s an impressive achievement, unless you’re his parents.

We are 10 days away from the 10th anniversary of the premiere of "Deadwood," David Milch's revisionist Western and one of the greatest drama series to ever grace this medium. You all are no doubt familiar with my love of "Deadwood" by now, whether as a chapter in my book or one of the main topics of conversation for the last three summers of the blog as I re-reviewed each episode. Along the way, we were lucky enough to be graced with the presence of Jim Beaver, Keone Young, W. Earl Brown and Garrett Dillahunt, as these alums of the show offered their own memories of each episode, each of them suffused with the passion that comes from having been part of something so strange and so special for too short a period. Now I have another Beaver-related "Deadwood" reverie for you, in video form. My old partner in crime...
