“Prisoners begged for mercy…they got nun.”
In horror cinema, groups of young adults always seem to find themselves entering spooky or abandoned locations… Will they ever learn?
Opening in a palette of creepy-cool midnight blue, Ashley-Kae (Erika Edwards) retells her nighttime childhood entailing her fear of the terrifying Sister Monday (Felissa Rose) hidden under the bed, in her closet, and in her head. In the present day, however, she leads a group consisting of her sister, her sister’s boyfriend, and a classmate. At first, in Ashley being a keen photographer, the group take a stop on their travels (much to the dismay of the sister and her boyfriend), so that Ashley is able to capture a few shots for her thesis, but that isn’t her only desire. "You don't know what he did to me..." Lionsgate has debuted one final trailer for Tyler Perry's new drama titled Acrimony, an infidelity thriller starring Taraji P. Henson. We featured the first trailer for this film last year, about a woman tired of standing by her husband who continues to lie and cheat on her. Lyriq Bent plays her husband, with a cast including Danielle Nicolet, Jazmyn Simon, Tika Sumpter, Jason Vail, and Ptosha Storey. For those wondering, the word acrimony is a noun meaning "bitterness or ill feeling", though this trailer explains this as well. The film is told mostly through flashbacks, with Henson retelling her story of how she first met him and all the abuse she has quietly received over the years, before turning vicious and vengeful. Did she kill him in the end? Maybe, maybe. You'll have to see this to find out. Here's the...

"So, do you think you have an anger problem?" Lionsgate has revealed the first trailer for Tyler Perry's next drama, an infidelity thriller starring Taraji P. Henson called Acrimony. The word acrimony is actually a noun meaning "bitterness or ill feeling." It connects to the plot here, because Henson plays a woman tired of standing by her husband who continues to lie and cheat on her. Lyriq Bent plays her husband, with a cast including Danielle Nicolet, Jazmyn Simon, Tika Sumpter, Jason Vail, and Ptosha Storey. The film seems to be told through flashbacks, with Henson retelling her story of how she first met him and all the abuse she has quietly received over the years, before turning vicious and vengeful. This doesn't look so bad. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Tyler Perry's Acrimony, direct from Lionsgate's YouTube: A faithful wife (Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson...

With Sharknado 5 making a splash on TV screens across the globe these past few weeks, what better time to visit the world of The Asylum? Ahhhh, the early days of DVD. When anything and everything was released to capitalise on the burgeoning desire for people to buy discs but not pay the extortionate prices the big studios were charging. Horror movie monsters don’t get much goofier than the Sasquatch. Sure, Bigfoot is a legitimate part of American folk legend/mythology, but The Missing Link doesn’t exactly inspire fear or terror, no matter how good the ape suit is. Some brave directors have tried, mind – most notably Eduardo Sanchez, with his found footage feature Exists – but we’re a long way off from a definitive, and good Bigfoot feature.
Latest – of a very small queue – to step up to the bat is John Portanova, with his mostly serious Hunting Grounds (or Valley of the Sasquatch to go by its sillier but better title, by which is is known on UK DVD too). John Portanova’s award-winning “Hunting Grounds” (formerly known as “Valley of the Sasquatch”) is some real worst-case scenario horror, as it centers on a father and son who must contend with an angry clan of Bigfoot. Not just one Bigfoot, and not even a particularly happy one, but a whole mess of pissed off Sasquatch.
The winner of Best Sci-Fi Horror Film at the 2015 Toronto Independent Film Festival is now set for release thanks to Uncokr’d Entertainment, finally allowing more Bigfoot-crazed cinephiles to see what happens when the furry monsters stop being polite and start getting real.

Welcome to our fifth and final week of exclusive on-the-set coverage from Atlanta for Spirit World Films' Creature Feature. This is Swf’s fifth feature in less than three years, their last two films, Realm of Souls and Buried Cain, having both been picked up for global distribution.
Spirit World is the brainchild of three talented indie trendsetters: Chase Smith, Lance Paul and Edward Boss. These Southerners are turning the game upside down on what the true meaning of indie global films is.
With films budgeted at less than $20k, their combined multi “hat-wearing” skills are proving that you don’t need a giant budget nor a Hollywood soundstage to create cult classics.
Creature Feature is comprised of four short vignettes and one overall story that connects them all, similar to classics such as Creepshow and Trick 'r Treat.

Know who's really killing indie filmmakers? Other wannabe indie filmmakers. Since making a movie has become so easy and Diy, the market has been flooded with trash by people who have no business even owning a camera. This makes finding the promising indie films an absolute chore.
Still, we wade through the film mire, and when something captures our eyes, we bring it to your attention. Take Adam Ahlbrandt's Hunters for example. Test screenings of the film have resulted in a 50 percent walkout ratio, and apparently one man had a panic attack following his viewing.
It is set to be released by ToeTag Films in the Us and Illusions Unlimited in Germany later this year.
The flick stars Linnea Quigley, J.D. Brown, Kacie Marie, Tina Krause, Haley Madison, Jason Vail, Mel Heflin, Shaun Paul Costello, Tiffany Carroll, Victor Bonacore, Jadie Goodpasture, and Genoveva Rossi. Ahlbrandt directs from a script he wrote.

Over the next four weeks Spirit World will be giving us a glimpse of what goes into making movies on the fly, including exclusive first looks at the monsters soon to be taking over your theaters. Creature Feature...

This is the fifth independent feature film by Spirit World Productions and their fourth in the horror genre. Creature Feature is a horror anthology that is a throwback to classic comic book style horror films like Creepshow and old horror comics of the 1950s.
The film consists of four unique tales of terror that overlap and intersect in non-liner ways, much like Trick 'r Treat and Pulp Fiction, with a fifth wrap-around story that connects them all together.
Chase Smith directs. Libby Blanton, Tenille Houston, Stacia Hitt, Lance Paul, Stephanie Davis, and Jason Vail star.

Gut is a movie we previously covered in our Indie Spotlight and it will be making its way to DVD on May 28th. Not only do we have the cover art and additional release details, but we’ve also been provided with an exclusive clip:
“Something is missing in Tom’s life. Every day he goes through the motions, becoming increasingly detached from those around him. His best friend Dan thinks he has the answer, a mysterious video he’s got to see to believe. What Dan shows him leaves Tom unsettled, flooding his mind with disturbing images and desires, and binding the two friends together with its ugly secret. As he tries desperately to forget what he saw, Tom’s mounting feelings of guilt and disillusionment quickly give way to paranoia and fear. One video soon follows another and another, blurring the line between reality and voyeuristic fascination, and...

“Torture porn” horror, awkward diner conversations, and uncomfortable sex scenes – that’s what Gut does, but not with much enthusiasm. When you think torture porn, you think over the top gore and mind-invading usages of torturous acts which offer some variety or differentiation among kills. Elias’ film is quite the opposite, never switching up what sick acts are being depicted on the strange videos, giving us the same shot over and over again as what creative spark there was slowly flickers out. Seeing the same slice becomes old and tiresome, losing the danger and suspense typical sub-genre films hold by never knowing what torture device will be utilized next, questioning the lingering effects watching such smut has instead.
That’s where Gut differentiates itself from typical “torture porn” type films, going against the grain by focusing more on psychologically invading aspects of someone watching said gutting instead of acting out crazy,...

(Gut screened at the 2012 Spooky Movie Film Festival, which ran Oct. 10-18 at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.)
With its three-letter title and directed by the singularly named Elias, it’s no surprise that Gut is about as minimal a horror movie can be and still be considered a horror movie.
The horror genre is usually typified by extreme visual flourish — moody lighting, framing to conceal/reveal terror lurking in the corners, lingering dolly shots during slow scenes of exposition, whip pans during emotionally intense moments, frighteningly close close-ups, etc.
Elias, though, goes the entirely opposite direction. Cut out the few moments of gore that do appear on-screen and we could be watching just about anything, from a bland suburban drama to a low-energy buddy comedy. Plus, the visual banality services a plot so slow it needs its pulse checked every so often.

Tom (Jason Vail) and Dan (Nicholas Wilder) are best friends. They grew up together and now work at the same office, but while Tom has a wife and kids Dan is seemingly content living in their past. His main hobbies are watching horror films and constantly trying to pry Tom away from his family to join him. Tom’s interest has been waning though, both in his friend and and his family, and as the hours and days of his mundane life tick by his unease with it all grows. And then Dan shows him an apparent snuff film. Kills Four actual characters eat it here in violent ways along with one or two anonymous snuff stars. Ills There’s some stabbing, slicing and asphyxiation on display here, but the standout scenes involve a woman’s torso being sliced open and then felt up on the inside. Mononymous director Elias, best known for his 2006 horror-based anthology “LovecraCked! The Movie”, explores the long-term effects of genre consumption with his 2011 thriller “Gut”. It’s a subject that many filmmakers have attempted to tackle over the years, though few have approached the premise with the seriousness and depth required to make this sort of feature work. Instead of aiming strictly for laughs, much like Anders Jacobsson’s grossly underrated effort “Evil Ed”, Elias decides to keep things dead serious, exploring how overexposure to insanely subversive material can effect the human psyche. It’s not your typical horror picture, and that’s precisely what makes “Gut” so phenomenal. Jason Vail stars as Tom, your typical square-jawed suburbanite who works a thankless 9-to-5 office job with his best buddy Dan (Nicholas Wilder). The two friends have settled into a rather boring and mundane routine, eating at the same diner every single afternoon...

Every now and then, The Asylum, the makers of fine products like the popular “mockbusters” (i.e. moderately budgeted copies, often with similar sounding titles and DVD jacket productions, designed to take advantage of the big-budget studio films coming out at the same time), gets it right. I won’t go so far as to say that Richard Schenkman’s “Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies” is one of those rarities, but it sure doesn’t look anymore absurd than, say, the “Matrix”-heavy trailer for Timur Bekmambetov’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. So, you know, that’s saying something. While the Civil War rages on, President Abraham Lincoln must undertake an even more daunting task – destroying the Confederate Undead. Starring Bill Oberst Jr., Baby Norman and Jason Vail. Look for Honest Abe to slay zombies on May 29, 2012, about a month before Bekmambetov’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. By then, hopefully the...

Pick your poison: Zombies or vampires. Abraham Lincoln is going to fight both of groups of blood-thirty creatures this year in two vastly different cinematic landscapes. The Asylum’s upcoming mockbuster “Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies” pits the former president against the undead, a premise that’s eerily similar to a big-budget Hollywood motion picture getting the theatrical treatment later this year. Say what you will, but if we didn’t have mockbusters, I wouldn’t have the “Transmorphers” franchise. I’m just saying. Check out these words from the official press release: Actor Jason Vail stars in The Asylum’s next big feature “Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies” opposite Bill Oberst, Jr., as Honest Abe, which has just wrapped shooting in beautiful historic Savannah, Ga. His first appearance in an Asylum film, Vail was thrilled with the opportunity to play one of history’s most notorious bad boys, John Wilkes Booth,...
