Comedian and actor Deon Cole is stepping into the role of leading man with the new series Average Joe, which debuted on BET+ Monday. In the dark comedy-drama, Cole portrays Joe Washington, a husband and father whose regular blue-collar life gets turned upside down after his father dies and he discovers he stole $10 million from a Russian mob boss (Pasha Lychnikoff). In some ways, Cole, too, experienced a life change when he accepted the part and found himself number one on the call sheet for the first time in his career.
“It was extremely difficult because I’ve never been a lead,” Cole said during a special preview screening of the series held at Goya Studios during BET Weekend. “I’m used to just coming in, doing my part, jumping in my car and taking off, and going to go do stand-up. That was my routine with everything I’ve ever done.

BET+’s new darkly comic thriller Average Joe may or may not be better than Netflix’s Ozark — I never loved Ozark, but maybe you did and so be it — but the gap between the two shows isn’t as great as the inevitable gap in coverage would seem to suggest.
Average Joe and Ozark are both highly derivative pieces of violent, ethically twisty pulp made somewhat distinctive by their regional specificity, irritatingly washed-out cinematography and sitcom-honed leading men repressing their natural timing to play a tamped-down everyman.
Though it doesn’t yet realize aspirations that could generously be described as Jim Thompson meets August Wilson — that’s a show I would very much watch — Average Joe has the feeling of a potential breakout for BET+, though it’s impossible to know what a “breakout for BET+” would mean in this landscape.
It’s an easily digestible genre offering that...

If you're looking for a new show to watch this summer, Average Joe should be on your list.
The BET+ original series premieres Monday, June 26, but you'll have to watch it weekly.
The streaming service is dropping the first two episodes on the premiere date before settling into one episode a week and concluding with a two-episode season finale on August 10.
Sometimes, releasing all the episodes at once works, but based on the trailer alone, we'll have plenty to discuss with this show.
Thankfully, Whitney Evans will be running point on reviews, so we'll be able to delve into the show's nuances.
Inspired by the life of creator Robb Cullen, Average Joe is a darkly comedic, intense one-hour drama set in The Hill district of Pittsburgh.
Blue-collar plumber, Joe Washington, discovers his recently deceased father lived a secret second life and stole millions of dollars from dangerous people just before he died.

Tammy Townsend can do it all. Act, sing, dance, she's an accomplished performer who has made her way down to Louisiana to grace the screen as Billie on OWN's acclaimed drama series, Queen Sugar.
Billie is Prosper Denton's estranged daughter who comes back to St. Josephine with secrets she's been waiting 20 years to tell.
I was able to chat with Tammy about honestly portraying Billie's trauma, playing opposite one of the Disney Channel's biggest stars, her favorite scene partner, and whether she'll be returning to Queen Sugar.
Had you been a fan of Queen Sugar before working on the show? What attracted you to the role?
Tammy: I knew Queen Sugar, but I hadn't invested in it yet at that point. But a lot of the actors on the show I was familiar with, and I knew how good they were.
I was familiar with their work and stuff.

Own has reversed its decision to renew the drama “Love Is__,” less than a month after co-creator Salim Akil was first accused of domestic violence by a former girlfriend.
“Own has decided not to move forward with the second season of ‘Love Is __,'” the network said in a statement. “The TV memoir was inspired by the real-life love story of producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.”
The network’s move to scrap the series is said to be unrelated to the abuse allegation or the subsequent Warner Bros. inquiry, but it comes months after the network first announced that it had renewed the show, co-created by Akil and his wife and producing partner Mara Brock Akil, for a second season.

“I’m in love with a guy I don’t even know.” Here’s the first extended trailer for Love Is___, the new Own drama series from Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.
Set primarily in 1990s Los Angeles against the backdrop of Black Hollywood, the series follows Nuri (Michele Weaver) and Yasir (Will Catlett), a couple from seemingly opposite worlds, as they chase their dreams and learn to follow their hearts. Told from the perspective of the couple’s present-day selves, the romantic drama also revisits the social issues and vibrant black culture of that time, reflecting on how it all aligned to shape the couple they have become nearly 20 years later — a power couple navigating a complex set of social codes while also balancing successful careers and a beautiful family. Inspired by the Akils’ own relationship journey, it explores the highs, the lows and the magic of falling — and staying — in love.

Lifetime has gotten a bad name recently. For the most part it’s well deserved, especially if you tune in during the Amish abortion movie or one of the films about serial killers with a lame pun title. You can't accuse "The Pest" of failing to live up to its title.
Clocking in at a merciful 82 minutes, the loud, irritating John Leguizamo comedy starts out at a spazzed-out, fever pitch with nowhere to go but off as it spews forth a nonstop parade of ethnic and sexual stereotypes. If nothing else, it proves to be an equal-opportunity offender.
Adolescent males may be initially lured by the barrage of bodily function footage, but the TriStar film will unlikely be pestering the multiplexes for very long.
Coming off as a Latino Jim Carrey, the remarkably talented Leguizamo collaborated on the story -- yet another goof on "The Most Dangerous Game" -- with his "House of Buggin'" co-creator David Bar Katz. He throws subtlety to the winds in the role of Pestario "Pest" Vargas, a con artist on hyper-drive who's on the run from the Scottish mob in Miami's South Beach.
The $50,000 he owes them is within reach, provided he agrees to a little business arrangement offered by the Germanic Gustav Shank (Jeffrey Jones), a career hunter whose collection of mounted human heads is one particular minority group short. Pest fits the bill, and if he agrees to be part of Gustav's little hunting expedition, he'll pocket the money -- provided he makes it out alive. Otherwise it's a one-way trip to the trophy room.
A human chameleon with an impressive range demonstrated in film ("William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet," "To Wong Foo ..".), television ("House of Buggin'" ) and stage ("Mambo Mouth"), Leguizamo lays most of it to waste here with an annoying vehicle that plays like a Pauly Shore cast-off.
Veteran TV director Paul Miller ("Saturday Night Live", "In Living Color") opts for a noisy, over-the-top approach to the material that still might have been contained on the small screen. But treated to a larger-than-life visual format and Dolby-enhanced supersonic sound, "The Pest" recklessly veers into overkill, leaving the rest of the cast (even Jones) in its dust.
At least it's a colorful mess, thanks to the South Beach backdrop and the production design from longtime Blake Edwards collaborator Rodger E. Maus.
