Exclusive: After a grueling few months for UK film and TV producers, there are signs that the industry is starting to head back to work following twin actors and writers strikes in the U.S.
Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.
Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.
The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.
Amateur is directed by James Hawes, whose debut feature, the Anthony Hopkins vehicle One Life, has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season.

Tom Cruise loves chucking himself out of planes, but did you know he can actually fly them? The "Mission: Impossible" star has been a qualified pilot since 1994 and owns several aeronautic vehicles, including a P-51 Mustang that popped up in "Top Gun: Maverick." As he once told Hello magazine (via The Netline), "All I ever wanted to be was a pilot or an actor," affirming that he very much shares Pete Mitchell's need for speed (which should come as a shock to literally no one on the planet). But it's not just the "Top Gun" movies; 2017's "American Made" likewise saw Cruise hopping into a cockpit for a real-life crime story that cements the adage, "Truth is stranger than fiction."
Cruise stars in "American Made" as Barry Seal, a wannabe hotshot pilot who's working a cushy yet, for him, soul-draining gig flying commercial jets for Twa in the '...

Rami Malek is circling his next lead role in the thriller "Amateur" from 20th Century Studios. Deadline reports that James Hawes — who directed all six episodes of the first season of "Slow Horses," the Gary Oldman-led Apple TV+ series — has also boarded the project. Right now, it's still in the development stages, with Malek in line to executive produce alongside Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson.
The plot of "Amateur" reportedly "follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them." The CIA isn't having any of that, and "when it becomes clear they won't act due to conflicting internal priorities," the cryptographer takes matters into his own hands and "blackmails the agency into training him."
Malek is no stranger to thriller territory, having starred in "Mr. Robot" for four seasons before the show ended in 2019. Since winning...

Deadline has reported that Rami Malek is set to star in Amateur, a CIA thriller which James Hawes will helm.
Gary Spinelli wrote the most recent draft of Amateur, which follows “a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.” James Hawes is best known for helming the first season of Slow Horses on Apple, so he certainly knows his way about spy-craft stories. Hawes has also directed episodes of Raised by Wolves, Snowpiercer, Black Mirror, Penny Dreadful, and more. No start date has been set for Amateur, but it could wind up being Rami Malek’s next project.

When we last saw Rami Malek in spy thriller territory, he was very much the villain, threatening Daniel Craig's 007 and the world in general in No Time To Die. But for a potential future film, he could be on the other side other moral spectrum, albeit with a vengeful bent. Malek is attached to star in The Amateur, which has Slow Horses director James Hawes also aboard.

When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.
Malek will next be seen in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and is aboard a miniseries about the life and career of Buster Keaton.

“Chaos Walking,” a sci-fi adventure starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, has delayed its big-screen debut.
The Lionsgate film, which has already been postponed several times, will premiere in theaters on March 5. It was initially scheduled to release on March 1, 2019, before it was pushed to Jan. 22, 2021, to accommodate reshoots.
Doug Liman directed the movie, which is based on the book “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Pattrick Ness, who wrote the screenplay with Christopher Ford.
“Chaos Walking,” set in the not-so-distant future, follows Todd Hewitt (Holland) as he discovers Viola, a girl (Ridley) who mysteriously crash lands on his planet. The entire area, curiously, is completely void of women, while the men are affected by “the Noise” — a force that puts all their thoughts on display. As Todd promises to protect Viola from harm, he uncovers his inner abilities and discovers his planet’s dark secrets. The cast also includes Nick Jonas,...

YouTube has canceled “Impulse,” arguably its final out-and-out drama, after two seasons.
The cancelation leaves only a couple remaining scripted series at the web subscription service, namely “Cobra Kai” and “Liza on Demand,” and is the latest example of YouTube’s shifting content strategy.
The shift became clear in April of last year, when the quadruple cancelation of “Champaign Ill,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body” signaled that rather than taking on streamers like Netflix and Amazon with a traditional slate of scripted projects, YouTube was changing its focus to genres such as unscripted, educational and music artist-focused docu-follows.
“Impulse” showrunner Lauren LeFranc shared news of the cancelation via Twitter, saying that “we tried to find a new home, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be.” In her statement, LeFranc talked about struggle she and the show’s creators faced “being on a new,...

Transgender representation in Hollywood scored a huge victory last week when Scarlett Johansson stepped down from “Rub & Tug,” in which she was set to play a trans man — but it would be just as bad if the project disappeared entirely.
Naysayers are quick to point out there are no trans actors famous enough to carry a movie the way Johansson can, but “Rub & Tug” has a chance to reverse that narrative. The film is now high profile regardless of who is in the role; the casting controversy provided far more free publicity than Johansson’s name. If the film fizzles out, it would support the notion that trans movies can only get made with an A-lister attached. “Rub & Tug” needs to happen now more than ever, to prove trans movies don’t need cis movie stars to sell tickets.

When those missions involve Colombia, Seale is approached by the Medellín Cartel, who offer him large sums of cash if he smuggles cocaine into America. Things quickly spiral out of control as the CIA task Barry with running Russian guns to the Contras in Nicaragua, only for the Cartel to make him a better offer for them, which he cheerfully accepts. Director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) has started production on his dystopian sci-fi film called Chaos Walking. Today a photo from the set of the film has been released and it offers us our first look at Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming). As you can see, Ridley is sporting a very different look with her blonde hair.
The movie is based on the book by Patrick Ness and the two actors will be playing the main characters, Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade. The story "follows a guy (Holland) who lives on the distant planet of New World—a new hope for humanity until struck by 'The Noise,' a virus which inflicts immersive visions of ones’ every thought. The cacophony drives many mad until Todd makes a hidden, silent discovery: there is a girl named Viola (Ridley) who may be the key to...

Perhaps the most interesting thing about American Made is that Tom Cruise still has the clout to get something like it into theaters. Guided by his Edge of Tomorrow collaborator Doug Liman, we are told the impossibly true story of Barry Seal, a bored pilot who becomes a C.I.A.-funded drug smuggler and living embodiment of the Reagan era’s bullshit-tery. Taking structural cues from stuff like Goodfellas and Blow, Liman has fun within the sub-sub-genre of crazy Americans doing crazy American things for a lot of money. But then, as always, it’s a bit more complicated than that. There’s a memorably (and intentionally) sloppy aesthetic style that parallels the loopy narrative and the loopy hero at its center. Much of the running time is spent in the air as Seal pulls off mid-air deliveries and impromptu landings in the middle of neighborhoods.
Mind you, this is not an action movie.

Whether it’s the challenge of playing against type or the allure of wowing audiences with their range, some of Hollywood’s most bankable stars have often turned to roles as lovable crooks to keep their careers fresh. Think Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, a tour-de-force performance that saw the hero of Titanic and Inception not simply play a villain but a morally bankrupt real-life stockbroker. That film ultimately earned DiCaprio critical raves and an Oscar nomination. So, one can hardly blame Tom Cruise for taking on the life of airline-pilot-turned-drug-smuggler Barry Seal in his latest film, American Made.
Reteaming Cruise with director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow), the film chronicles Seal’s rise and fall as he’s recruited by a mysterious CIA agent (Domhnall Gleeson) and becomes increasingly embroiled in the Medellín drug cartel. Along the way, he earns the attention of numerous government agencies,...

Oliver Stone’s films from the 1990s feel substantially more radical than the anarchic, protest-cinema label that many seemed quick to slap on them. Like Stone’s JFK or Natural Born Killers, American Made is a barrage of visual and aural cues slapped together to create that same kinetic spirit that Stone so artfully mastered. Yet, in its attempt to be a Stone-level critique of America, director Doug Liman instead just apes the style without any discerning commentary. It’s like a high-schooler giving the middle finger to the Reagan-era policies without fully understanding the why.
Tom Cruise reunites with his Edge Of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman, to tell the true story of a pilot who is unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history in the late 70s. Meet Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), a Twa pilot and family man who became a drug smuggler for the Medellín cartel, led by Pablo Escobar (Mauricio Mejía). The Louisiana-born Seal ran narcotics, guns and money between Central America and an airport in Mena, Arkansas in the late Seventies and early Eighties – then the CIA recruited him as an informant so he could keep doing it and bring them back key intel in the War on Drugs. It's lucrative work if playing both sides against the middle doesn't get you killed.

Every decade or two, Tom Cruise seems to be compelled to take part in a biopic. Back in the late 80’s, it was his Academy Award nominated turn in Born on the Fourth of July. About 20 years later, it was Valkyrie. Now, this week sees him back playing a real person with American Made, a look at Barry Seal, a pilot who nearly ended up bringing down the Reagan Administration with his drug running. It’s still close to action hero territory at times for Cruise, but compared to many of his recent outings, this is downright a prestige picture. He’s a great movie star, endlessly compelling in action flicks, but serious films always contain his best performances. The movie is a biopic, albeit an unconventional one. Barry Seal (Cruise) is an unhappy Twa pilot who ends up recruited by the CIA during the 1980’s. Monty ‘Schafer’ (Domhnall Gleeson) sees something in Barry,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Style and humor galore, and a hugely entertaining performance from Tom Cruise. But should a true story of immense governmental corruption be quite this fun? I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Ever since he was a kid Tom Cruise wanted to work for the Colombian drug cartels? Not quite, but American Made, based on the true story of commerical airline pilot turned international criminal mastermind Barry Seal, hits a lot of the same beats as GoodFellas, though it misses some it tries to hit, too. By the time Barry, in his gleeful voiceover narration, says, “The money was coming in faster than I could launder it,” I felt like I’d seen this all before, and better.

Tom Cruise reteams with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman for this slickly entertaining, if slightly familiar comedy thriller based on the true story of pilot-turned-drug smuggler-slash-cia conscript Barry Seale.
American Made begins in 1978, with bored Twa pilot Seale (Cruise) being tapped by CIA agent Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) to fly covert surveillance missions over Central America.
Meanwhile,...

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman reteam for American Made. Here's our review of a great crime drama...
There are certain things you can generally count on in a Tom Cruise movie: running really fast, smiling winningly at ladies and hurtling around in fast cars, or on motorbikes, or in planes. Also, he’ll be topless at least once.
See related Marc Webb interview: The Amazing Spider-Man, villains, casting, sequels and more
Cruise’s second collaboration with director Doug Liman (they previously brought us the unexpectedly great sci-fi action film, Edge Of Tomorrow), American Made requires quite a bit more from the Hollywood stars than just winning smiles and stunts - though the movie does deliver plenty of those too. Cruise plays Barry Seal, a former Twa commercial pilot who, at the behest of an enigmatic guy with a beard who calls himself Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) winds up flying planes for the CIA.

There’s a case to be made that Tom Cruise is a compelling screen presence when he looks desperate. Much evidence for this claim was gathered in his millennial run – 1999’s “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Magnolia,” 2001’s “Vanilla Sky” – in which varyingly forceful writer-directors did their level best to chip away at their star’s glib toothpaste-salesman confidence and expose the very human doubts and frailties behind it. After those box-office failures, Cruise retreated to the surety of known properties and franchises; though we got glimpses of other Cruises – notably the Comic Cruise of “Tropic Thunder” – this was his fall-back position up until the disastrous “The Mummy.” It’s possible that audiences had grown tired of watching a performer playing it so consistently safe: as Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson had twigged, it’s always more revealing watching a control freak losing control.

A few decades after Top Gun, career history repeats itself for Tom Cruise with his role as an ace flyboy in American Made. This jaunty, timely but somewhat derivative true-crime comedy-thriller casts the star as a fictionalized version of pilot Barry Seal, a real guy who ran drugs, money and guns between Latin America and the U.S. in the 1980s with backing from the CIA.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nick Jonas has joined the cast of Chaos Walking, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ post-apocalyptic sci-fi Ya books. The story is about people colonizing a planet where nearly all of the women have been killed off and the rest of the living things suffer from some kind of telepathic virus called The Noise. Jonas will be playing a soldier who is jealous that his father, Mads Mikkelsen (the film’s villain), has chosen to mentor the film’s hero instead of him. Said hero will be played by Tom Holland, who eventually discovers that a girl, played by Daisy Ridley, is somehow the key to saving the world.
Doug Liman is directing the film, with John Lee Hancock, Gary Spinelli, Lindsey Beer, Ness himself, and Charlie Kaufman contributing to the script.

It has been a good long while since Tom Cruise has been a contender for an Academy Award nomination. Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for the upcoming Cruise vehicle American Made, which looks to put the action hero in something slightly weightier than usual. Now, it doesn’t look like a straight up drama, but the adventure is tinged with a potentially heavier destination. Even if that’s not the case, the last time he worked with Doug Liman, we got something kind of awesome in Edge of Tomorrow. Hopefully, history can repeat itself here. We’ll have the Trailer for you at the end of the piece, but first…let’s talk about the movie itself for a moment. The film is based on a true story, though obviously the final product will only have a passing resemblance to what actually happened. Set during the 1980’s, pilot Barry Seal (Cruise...

With The Mummy landing in cinemas this week, Universal has taken the opportunity to launch the trailer for its next Tom Cruise project. Once known as Mena, it’s now called American Made, and sees Cruise reuniting with director Doug Liman, following their work on Edge Of Tomorrow.
It also looks like Cruise’s most interesting acting role in some time.
The film tells the story of a hustler by the name of Barry Seal – the character is based on a real person, even if the adventures around him use creative licence – who finds himself recruited by the CIA.
Here’s the trailer…
(Apparently, the Us version of the trailer doesn’t have drugs in it, fact fans).

If you’re like us, one big Tom Cruise blockbuster a year just isn’t enough. Cruise may be headlining the start of a brand new franchise with The Mummy this coming weekend, but those who are lukewarm on the prospect may find more to like in his other venture coming out later this year, American Made. The film reunites him with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, and shows him as a pilot given the opportunity to run a covert operation for the U.S. government.
Universal has now released a brand new trailer for the upcoming crime flick, and it looks to be pretty darn solid. If the names Cruise and Liman aren’t enough to sell you, the trailer itself may be. It looks to be a fun little ride in the vein of War Dogs, Lord of War, and Catch Me if You Can, which is a very good thing.

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley will star opposite each other in Chaos Walking, Doug Liman's adaptation of Patrick Ness's Ya novel.
Chaos Walking, at first glance, may seem like just another Ya novel adaptation in a field increasingly filled with failed, forgotten attempts. However, two of Hollywood’s hottest new names in current Spider-Man star Tom Holland and Star Wars sequel star Daisy Ridley are auspiciously joining forces to headline the Lionsgate film project based on Patrick Ness's 2008-2010 novel series.
The premise of Chaos Walking centers on a dystopian future, this time taking place on a planetary colony in which the survivors live in fear of a virus known as "The Noise," which symptomatically manifests a stream of visions, images, words and sounds shared by everyone else. In essence, it could be seen as a metaphorical social media malady.

The companies are developing four European-based films starting with Ol Parker’s take on the story of London concert promoter and con artist Roy Tempest.
The slate includes Fallen Idol, a remake of the 1948 Carol Reed / Graham Greene crime noir, and airship disaster story Hindenburg.
The three are being developed in association with long-term Parkes+MacDonald Productions partner ImageNation Abu Dhabi. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce each title, with Parkes+MacDonald president of production Evan Hayes serving as executive producer.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel writer Parker (pictured) is adapting Great Pretender from Tempest’s autobiography. Intellectual Property Group’s Joel Gotler is on board as an executive producer.
The story takes place in the early 1960s when Tempest faked a UK tour of America’s biggest soul acts like The Temptations to The Ronettes using ordinary people masquerading as the singers.
